A little boy was spending his Saturday morning playing in his sandbox. While he was building roads and houses
in the soft sand, he discovered a large stone in the middle of the sandbox.
Determined, the little boy pushed and pulled, but every time he thought he had made some progress, the stone
tipped and then fell back into the sandbox. The little boy tried his best, but his only reward (回报) was to have the
stone roll back, hitting his fingers.
Finally, the boy cried. All that time the boy’s father watched him from his living room window. At the moment
tears fell, his father came to the boy and the sandbox. Gently but surely he said, “Son, why didn’t you use all the
strength that you had?” Sadly, the boy cried back, “But I did, Daddy, I did! I use all the strength (力量) that I had!”
“No, son,” corrected the father kindly. “You didn’t use all the strength you had. You didn’t ask me.” With that the
father reached down, picked up the stone and removed it from the sandbox.
Do you have “stones” in your life that need to be removed? Are you discovering that you aren’t strong enough

How fit are your teeth? Are you lazy about brushing them? Never fear: An inventor is on the case. An electric
toothbrush senses how long and how well you brush, and it lets you track (追踪) your performance on your phone.
The Kolibree toothbrush was exhibited at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this
week. It senses how it is moved and can send the information to an Android phone or iPhone via a Bluetooth
wireless connection. The toothbrush will be able to teach you to brush right (don’t forget the insides of the teeth!)
and make sure you’re brushing long enough. “It’s kind of like having a dentist actually watch your brushing on a
day-to-day basis,” says Thomas Serval, the French inventor.
The toothbrush will also be able to talk to other programs on your phone, so developers could, for example,
create a game controlled by your toothbrush. You could score points for beating monsters among your teeth. “We
try to make it smart but also fun,” Serval says.
Serval says he was inspired (受到启发的) by his experience as a father. He would come home from work and
ask his kids if they had brushed their teeth. They said “yes”, but Serval would find their toothbrush heads dry. He
decided he needed a brush that really told him how well his children brushed.
The company says the Kolibree will go on sale this summer, from $99 to $199, depending on features. The
U.S. is the first target market.
Serval says that one day, it’ll be possible to replace the brush on the handle (把手) with a brushing unit that
also has a camera. The camera can even examine holes in your teeth while you brush.
33. Which statement about the Kolibree toothbrush is true?
A. It can talk with us.
B. It looks like a dentist.C. It can send the information to your phone.
D. It has a camera that can examine holes in your teeth.
34. Why did Serval decide to invent the toothbrush?
A. Because he could score points in games while brushing teeth.
B. Because he wanted to make sure his children could brush teeth well.
C. Because he wanted to replace the brush on the handle with a new one.
D. Because the company asked him to invent an electric toothbrush for the market.
35. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Only parents care about children’s teeth.
B. Serval’s children didn’t like to brush their teeth.
C. People are paying more and more attention to teeth health.
D. The invention of Serval will be able to check the user’s teeth.
D
Making a star on Earth
When you look at the night sky, what you see are actually lots of “power plants”. Every star makes a huge
amount of energy through nuclear fusion (核聚变). For years, scientists have tried to make this kind of energy.
They need to make a “mini star” on Earth. Recently, some scientists made a big step forward.
In February this year, the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy in Oxfordshire, UK. doubled a world record set in
1997. The machine there, named Jet, used fusion engines (发动机) to make the same amount of energy as four
wind turbines (涡轮机) make, reported The Guardian.
,
In the past no experiment could make more energy than what was used to start the fusion engine. This
new experiment, although only lasting five seconds, showed it’s possible to make more power. The reaction (反应)
stopped when the equipment got too hot. This problem can be solved with cooling systems. Future fusion reactions
may last much longer than five seconds—minutes or even hours.
Why do we care so much about star power? Fusion reactions would provide power to everyone on the earth—
enough for everyone to use for thousands or millions of years. They’re also clean—they don’t produce carbon
dioxide or radioactive (放射性的) waste.
You may wonder why fusion energy is so hard to make. Creating conditions similar to a star is not easy. The
machine must reach temperatures as high as 10 times that of the sun’s core.
Even so, it’s time to get excited about star power. If it can be successfully rolled out, it will be a landmark in
human history.
36. What are compared to “power plants”?A. scientists B. stars in the sky C. nuclear plants D. mini stars on the earth
37. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Reasons to use fusion energy. B. Why we need to find cleaner power.
C. The advantages of fusion reactions. D. The great amount of energy inside a star.
38. What can we infer about fusion energy from the passage?
A. It is very hard to make it on the earth.
B. Scientists are trying to get it from the core of the sun.
C. It can be produced in a cold environment with cooling systems.
D. It is hopeful that scientists will make it on the earth successfully.

Collector’s Corner
People collect all kinds of different things. Stamps or coins are the common ones to be collected. People also
collect the less common ones, such as beer bottles or bus tickets. Some collectors spend hours looking through junk
shops and buildup a collection for a few pence per object, while other collectors might spend thousands of pounds
on fine china or rare (稀有的) paintings.
Some people collect for money, but most people do it for fun. Collecting is basically illogical. If you simply
want to listen to the American singer and actor Elvis Presley’s first record, you can get a copy at most record shops.
A collector, however, will want to own an original 1955 disc, and will be willing to pay for it.
What makes a collection valuable? Rarity and condition are the most important things. A coin or stamp which
is worth hundreds in perfect condition might be worth (价值) only pence in average or poor condition.
What should you collect? Most collectors begin collecting things which interest them, and as the collection
grows, knowledge of the subject grows. If you want your collection to grow in value, it is probably best to avoid
things which are sold especially for collectors. Nearly everybody who buys a set of new coins or stamps will keep
them in perfect condition, so that the new coins or stamps will never become rare. The most valuable collections are
often things which were widely available, but which were usually thrown away after use, such as Coca-Cola bottles
or toy cars. An interesting collection can be started very cheaply.
One collector bas started a collection of 1950s and 1960s ball-point pens. At the moment it’s worth nothing,
but she predicts it will one day be valuable. Ball-points were widely available, and were made in a large range of
colours and styles. They were often designed to be thrown away when they were empty. Many people aren’t willing
to throw away used pens, and put them in a drawer or box, perhaps hoping they might work again one day. So it is
possible to find unusual things, made many years ago. That even costs nothing.39. What common things do people collect?

二、阅读理解(共8分,每小题2分)【对应答题卡上的题号进行填涂】
阅读下列短文,根据短文内容,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
Parents and children regularly face the challenges of money. Common topics include setting the pocket money,
learning to save, and deciding on expensive purchases. The goal of most parents is to teach their kids how to manage
money wisely. The goal of most kids is getting money to spend. How can families balance these goals?
“All parents hope they’ll raise a money savvy kid, who’ll grow up to be a financially secure adult and can use
their money wisely.” says financial planner Peg Eddy. The trick, say Eddy and most experts, is letting kids learn by
having a little money of their own. They will also find it empowering.
The Tidler family in Denver found the best way to teach about money was to let their kids earn some. Their son,
Ryan, 17, has been helping with their garden since he was 8. Now he owns his own equipment. He has been able to
save $7,800. In addition, Ryan bought a dirt bike and an impressive sound system. Ryan doesn’t resent having to
make his own money when other kids are given cash by their parents. “Some kids have a lot of stuff,” he says. “Some
kids don’t have much.”
Talking About It
Contrary to what some parents think, many kids want to learn how to handle their money. They know they are
being hit by constant (non-stop) consumer messages. They are also aware of the high cost of a college education.
Parents sometimes make the mistake when talking about money of discussing it only in terms of what kids
shouldn’t do. Instead, experts say, knowing how to handle money is the best way for kids to get what they really
want. That means long-term planning and saving for big expenses like college or a car or even the annual holiday
list. It also means thinking of others, by making donations to charity.
Giselle Lopez, 17, of New York City, learned the hard way. She racked up $2,000 in debt on her first credit card.
Her parents refused to pay, so Giselle got a job. Then she paid the debt off slowly herself. “Now every time I use it,
I know that it comes from my own pocket,” Giselle says. “That gives me a sense of responsibility for my actions.”
Different kids will have different styles when it comes to money. Teaching them how to use money doesn’t have
to mean setting rigid rules. When children like Ryan and Giselle have their own money to consider, they can learn to
set those rules themselves.
Learn Now, Save Later
Money skills are an important part of becoming a successful adult. David Brady manages a mutual fund geared
toward children and young adults. “Today we have debates about Social Security and pension plans dying out,” he
says.” These young people will have much more responsibility for their financial future than past generations.”Brady does caution kids. “They shouldn’t be consumed with money,” he says. However, they should understand
basic rules for earning, saving and investing.
That knowledge is greatly needed. Over the past decade, the average credit card debt of Americans ages 18 to
24 doubled, to nearly $3,000. Among high school seniors, four out of five have never taken a personal-finance class.
On the other hand, nearly half have an ATM debit card, and more than a quarter have bounced a check.
58. What does “a money savvy kid” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. A kid who is wise in money. B. A kid who is not in any danger.
C. A kid who is from a rich family. D. A kid who can save a lot of money.
59. Experts like Eddy and Brady believe that _______.
A. kids have the freedom to buy anything they want or like
.
B parents shouldn’t allow their kids money to use for themselves
C. parents should play tricks when they talk about money use with kids
D. kids are more likely to learn money management skill by using money
60. Why did the writer say Giselle Lopez learned the hard way?
A. Because she took a hard money management class.
B. Because she had to pay the debt off slowly herself.
C. Because she learned a difficult way to manage money.
D. Because she is not clever and has to work hard at school.
61. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Saving Matters! B. Class Works! C. Money Counts! D. Responsibility Rules!
