Lucy took it up and threw it into the air, but her brother didn’t pay attention and ran off, so the kite fell down. “Try again, children,” I said. Lucy once more took up the kite. But John ran off so suddenly that the kite flew out of her hand and it fell flat 第5页/共10页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司as before. “Try again,” said I. They did, and with more care, but a side wind came suddenly. As Lucy let go the kite, it was blown against some bushes and the tail was caught. Meanwhile, I went to the kite’s assistance and set the tail free from the bushes. I told them to find a more open area and then try again. We found an open area. I threw the kite up as John ran off. It rose up and promised a high flight. But John was so pleased that he stopped short to look upward. The string became loose. The kite shook and came down to the ground. “I won’t try anymore. The kite won’t fly.” said he angrily. I replied, “A few disappointments are not supposed to discourage us. And now try again.” And he tried and succeeded, for the kite was carried upward on the breeze as lightly as a feather. After enjoying the sight as long as he excited, John began to roll up the string slowly. “Shall we come out tomorrow and try again.” I smiled, “Yes, dear children. I wish to teach you the value of keeping trying. Whenever you fail, remember— TRY AGAIN!” 22. How many times did they fly the kite? A. Five. B. Four. C. Three. D. Six. 23. A. the ways of flying kites B. the pleasure of flying kites C. the cost of making mistakes D. the importance of keeping trying C You feel happiest when you create a healthy balance between giving and receiving. If you give without spending time filling your own needs, then it’s likely you will burn out, or feel upset. When you take without giving anything back, you never feel fulfilled, so you are always searching for ways to fill the empty space in your life. The way to create a healthy balance between giving and receiving is to know and then live by your values. I break values up into two groups which I call “being” values and “having” values. Your “being” values are the personalities of the ideal person you would like to be. People can choose some “being” values that they are willing to make a promise to live by. An example of some “being” values are: kind, loving, generous, peaceful, wise and even powerful. By acting on these values, you give to others through your actions and you inspire others by being a positive role model. Mastering being these personalities becomes your life purpose. Your “having” values are the feelings you need to create in order to be happy. These could be companionship, 第6页/共10页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司achievement or support. This is what you receive. You take responsibility for filling your own needs by taking steps to create these feelings and conditions in your life. When you make a promise to live by your “being” values, it becomes easier to make conscious (慎重的) choices. If you usually talk about your problems, you could choose to think and act like a calm person. A calm person might go for a walk, or set a time limit before you react. If you usually worry about something, you could choose to act like a responsible or wise person. A responsible or wise person might have the courage to deal with difficulties they meet. In other words, you would act like the person you choose to be—this is the key to personal power. When you choose to act on your values, you not only feel good about yourself, but you make your chosen beliefs stronger. Over time acting in this way changes how you see the world, and in turn the way other people think of you. 25. According to the passage, living by your “being” values, you would________. A. get a lot of power B. receive support from others C. fill your own needsD. form positive personalities . 26 What can we learn from the passage? A. Having values are more important than being values. B. The way other people think of you changes your values. C. You may shake your beliefs when your values are clear to you. D. Acting on your values can help balance what you give and receive. 27. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage? A. To show the importance of giving. B. To explain what personal values are. . C To tell people how to be truly happy. D. To encourage people to have a life purpose. D In recent years, there has been a general direction for new buildings to be more environmentally friendly. These buildings use energy and water nicely, reducing waste and pollution. However, setting up solar panels and water recycling systems involves higher costs than in a traditional building. The question is whether people are willing to pay these additional costs. 第7页/共10页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司One school in the UK has shown us that environmental principles (原则) are just as important to small projects as to large ones. Howe Dell primary school has its own wind turbine (风力发电机) to produce energy, uses rainwater to wash toilets, and uses desks made from recycled materials. These environmental parts of the building are relatively inexpensive, and over the life of the building, should provide a large return for the early costs. They also perform as valuable teaching materials when educating students about the environment. Another example in the UK is a private house in Wales, known as the “Hobbit House”. It is made from wood and the walls are made from straw. Solar panels provide electricity for lighting and electrical equipment. Water is supplied directly from a nearby river and is also collected from the rain for use in gardens to avoid wasting clean water. Houses like this one are green because they do not use oil or gas, but instead use renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind power. However, critics of these kinds of environmentally friendly buildings say that while they may be good for the environment, there are practical problems with their affordability, as they are too expensive to become a method of construction (建 筑) that can be widely used. There are further worries about their long-term efficiency. Not much energy can be produced by solar panels in the UK, and not every location has natural water source. In order to pay for environmentally friendly construction and produce an affordable building, compromises have to be made. These may be that the building will have to be smaller or made of less durable materials and with less energy-hungry technology. The benefits for constructing green buildings are clear. The United Nations Environment Programme believes that the construction accounts for (占据) 30-40% of energy use in the world. We need to reduce this energy use for the good of the Earth. However, it remains to be seen whether we are now able to accept the cost and practical problems of producing and living in environmentally friendly buildings. 28. What can we learn from Paragraph 2? A. People are not willing to pay for green buildings. B. It’s affordable for big buildings to set up solar panels. C. Wind turbines can produce enough energy for lighting. D. Environmental principles are meaningful to big and small projects. 29. The word “compromises” in Paragraph 4 probably means “________”. A. measurements B. agreements C. suggestions D. inventions 30. The writer probably agrees that green buildings ________. A. can not be constructed widely B. may not be as green as they seem C. are too expensive to be constructed 第8页/共10页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司D. are worthy though there are problems 31. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. Are Green Buildings Too Costly? B. Do Green Buildings Last for Long? C. Green Buildings: A New Method of Construction D. Green Buildings: A Better Way to Produce Energy 七、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共10分,1-3每小题2分,4题4分) Have you ever ridden a Ferris wheel lately? Can you imagine the flying feeling as you are pulled up to the top and then moved down to the bottom quickly again? Today a Ferris wheel is usually 40 to 60 feet tall. That seems very high when you are on the top looking down. But the first Ferris wheel was 264 feet high— taller than a twenty-story building! Can you imagine the view from the top of that? The first Ferris wheel was built for the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago. The people who planned the fair were looking for an attraction that would bring people to Chicago. George Ferris handed a drawing of a giant wheel that people could ride on. At first everyone laughed at his strange idea. But Mr. Ferris did not give up, and finally the idea was accepted. The ride opened in June of 1893. Today’s Ferris wheels have 12 to 16 seats, which each carry 2 or 3 people. But that first one had 36 enclosed cars, each holding 60 passengers. When filled, it carried 2, 160 people. During that summer in Chicago, about 1.5 million people rode the Ferris wheel. After the fair, the ride was moved to a nearby amusement park built especially to show off the wheel. In 1904, it was moved again— to St. Louis for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. After the fair there, the wheel stood unused. In 1906 it was finally sold to a company for scrap metal (废铁). Luckily a Chicago bridge builder, W.E. Sullivan, figured out how to make a smaller Ferris wheel that could easily be taken apart and put together. In 1906 he started the company that still makes many of the Ferris wheels used today. But, whenever you ride one, remember that it all began with George Ferris’s strange idea! 32.
