B At 60, mother-of-five Liz Earle is energised, clear-headed, and understands that the way she lives her life will give her the best chance of longevity. Earle, who sold her beauty company in 2010, isn’t one for standing still. She went on to found the Liz Earle Wellbeing magazine, continues with TV appearances, launched the charity LiveTwice, hosts a weekly podcast, and has written 36 books, including her latest, A Better Second Half, a manifesto (宣言) for midlife women. She was in denial about ageing for a while. She says: “I turned 60 last year and I didn’t want to acknowledge it. In my mother’s generation, 60 was grey hair, twinset and pearls, and slippers. I feel so far removed from that stereotype (刻板印象).” Earle, though, has defied the numbers. When she was in her mid-50s, she had her biological markers of age tested, which showed her biological age to be 39. It’s now 45, but in the next few years she intends on getting that marker down. In her late 50s, Earle experienced a lot of upheavals in her personal life, divorcing her second husband and failing in investment.“Starting again in my mid-50s was challenging but also energising, because it was an opportunity for a fresh start,”she reflects. “I felt like I was being given a second chance. And I want to encourageother women who feel that they are washed up, too.” The wellness advice she offers in the book is backed by scientific data, and it’s clear that Earle has done a lot of research in the three years it took to write it; she offers all manner of ways to maintain good health. She is concerned that midlife women don’t prioritise themselves. “Society marginalises (使微不足道) midlife women — we become invisible, we become irrelevant, whether that’s because we’re losing our looks, or we’re losing our relevance in society. And, actually, that shouldn’t be the case. We’re the clever, wise ones who have lived through it,” she explains.“ Ageing is a gift,”Earle continues,“Even when I was running the beauty company, we never used the term anti-ageing well — keeping cognitive function, keeping mobility, having a purpose.” Now, Earle is embracing all the good things that age has brought her, recently welcoming her first grandchild into the world, and she says she is looking forward to the next decade. 4. Which of the following statements is TRUE about Earle? A. She used to work as an employee in a beauty company. B. She steps out of the comfort zone and embraces changes. C. She believes she fits the stereotype of the 60- year- olds. D. She offered wellness advice without any scientific proof. 5. What does the underlined word “upheavals” in paragraph 5 mean? A. Unfair treatments. B. Heavy burdens. C. Sharp criticisms. D. Unpleasant changes. 6. According to paragraph 7, what does Earle encourage midlife women to do? A. To fight against ageing. B. To regain their wisdom. C. To put themselves first. D. To accept plastic surgery. 7. What’s Earle’s attitude towards ageing? A. Grateful. B. Fearful. C. Doubtful. D. Pitiful. C Inflation (通货膨胀) is the word on everyone’s lips, as our coffers (金库) take a hit and prices seem to rise constantly. Meanwhile, inflation remains stubbornly high in many developed economies despite the interest rate rises designed to bring prices down. The latest figures for the U. K. came in above expectations at 8.7% on an annual basis, while the U. S. Consumer Price Index (指数) (CPI) for May rose by 4% from the previous year. Some economists have found themselves considering a surprising potential contributor: music concerts. But what do concerts and the economy have to do with one another? From top singers to famous bands, Klaus Baader, global chief economist at Societe Generale, has tickets to see various artists this year. “One of the things that struck me as odd is that acquiring tickets for these concertsnowadays means people have to tighten their belt for a while,” he said. “And a concert trip doesn’t end with a single ticket. It’s also related to Coca- Cola or hot dogs, the prices of which are always hiked up when shows take place, let alone the accommodation,” he explained. Take the Renaissance World Tour by a famous American singer- songwriter whose first stop was in Stockholm in May as an example. “In the Swedish May inflation numbers, hotel prices rose more than what is usual for May,” said Filip Andersson, from Danske Bank. “Hotels in the Stockholm region were reportedly fully booked the weeks around the event and prices thus skyrocketed. Due to a third of Sweden’s hotel rooms being in the nation’s capital, prices rose dramatically on a national scale.” Economists have nicknamed the phenomenon: “tourflation”, which has stimulated analysts to give a lot of thought to the upswing. “The concert market is booming. Understandably, this relates to supply and demand forces — consumers are most interested in making up for their time lost during the COVID-19 lockdowns,” Baader explained. He also pointed to changes in how musicians make a profit. “Artists’ models have changed from making money by selling CDs towards earning revenues mostly from concerts,” Baader added. The impact of concerts on inflation might be short- lived. In Sweden's case, Andersson believes the normalization of inflation levels will occur later after the concert. 8. What can be concluded about inflation from paragraph 2? A. It is a hard-to-tackle and lasting concern. B. It is positively correlated with interest rates. C. It is much worse in rich developed countries. D. It is an outcome of ineffective financial adjustments. 9. What was Klaus Baader astonished by? A. The limited food choices in concerts. B. The lack of availability of concert tickets. C. The popularity of top singers and famous bands. D. The overall high expenses for attending concerts. 10. What does the example of the tour in Stockholm show? A. Concerts can boost the acceptability of a city. B. Concerts promote the growth of local entertainment. C. Concerts do more harm than good to the host city. D. Concerts can have broader impacts on the economy. 11. What does Klaus Baader aim to explain in the sixth paragraph? A. The reason for artists’ shifting their income models. B. The supply and demand conflict in the music industry. C. The underlying factors behind the tourflation phenomenon. D. The impact of COVID-19 lockdowns on the concert market. D These students wandering through the woods on the outskirts (郊区) of Portland, Oregon, aren’t on a school field trip — this muddy field is their school. From the moment they’re dropped off in the morning, they spend theirentire day outside in one of Oregon’s public parks. “Rain or shine, we’re out here,” said teacher Christine Fleener. On this surprisingly nice day, Fleener’s class of fifth graders headed to the grassland for a biology lesson. Further down the trail, a group of fourth graders is learning on logs. It’s school, just not the type of school you might be used to. “Forest school is where the classroom does not have walls,” said Tony Deis, one of the founders of Trackers Earth Forest School. “It’s how kids originally learned; they didn’t learn sitting at desks, facing forward, and looking at a teacher. They learned from a multi-sensory environment.” Over the past decade, outdoor forest schools have gained popularity in the United States. The idea is that the challenges that come with being outside all day — dealing with weather, building your own shelter, and unearthing the unexpected are all part of the learning process. It’s complicated, of course. Outdoor schooling involves a puzzle of weather and regulations and budget issues. A well-funded private school in Portland, Oregon is one thing, but what about a public school in Portland, Maine? Surprisingly, cold Maine, of all places, has been quick to adopt outdoor learning. The district isn’t all out side all the time, but certain classes, like art, have moved outdoors. Supplies came from federal (联邦的) funds and local donations. And while Maine has plenty of open space, Brooke Teller, the outdoor learning coordinator (协调人) for Portland Public Schools, believes schools in major cities could have green classrooms hiding underneath their pavement (路面). She said, “We have a few hundred landscape architects all across the country who have volunteered to be a thought partner with schools that want to figure out where on their grounds would be best for outdoor learning.” 12. What does the author describe at the beginning of the text? A. The routine of a forest school. B. The popularity of public parks. C. An interesting school field trip. D. An unforgettable biology lesson. 13. What is the main philosophy behind the concept of forest schools? A. Kids learn by outdoor practice. B. Kids learn out of curiosity. C. Kids learn by challenging others. D. Kids learn by interacting with others. 14. What does Teller suggest schools that want to start outdoor education do? A. Start from certain classes. B. Work with landscape architects. C. Make use of their open space. D. Build green classrooms underground. 15. What can be the best title for the text? A. A new way of learning B. Benefits of learning outdoors C. Outdoor forest schools D. Now, some people say there should be a pause in AI work to make sure it doesn’t become dangerous. ___16___ Most people have probably read a book or seen a movie or show about AI or a robot that has become so smart that it can take over the world. Most current AI tools are good at just one task, like answering questions, or identifying objects in photos. But scientists have been working to improve AI models, mainly by training the models on larger and larger collections of information. ___17___ Extremely large models have surprised even their creators with what they can do. Some recent models can create realistic photos from a short written description. Others can re-create anyone’s voice saying anything based on a voice recording just a few seconds long. ___18___ But really, ChatGPT is simply guessing— based on its training information whose word is most likely to come next, over and over again. The rapid progress of recent AI models worries some people. Last week, many computer experts released a letter calling for a six-month pause for any work on AI tools. The letter claimed AI companies were in a race to create “powerful digital minds” that no one can “understand, predict, or control”. ___19___ Not all AI experts agree with the letter. Some say the letter makes today’s AI tools sound more intelligent than they really are. Others say it’s more important to worry about real problems with current AI tools rather than imaginary ones in the future. ___20___ Therefore, many companies are more likely to keep developing powerful AI tools. But the letter has sent a strong warning that many people including leaders will be thinking about this matter carefully. A. This causes terror. B. However, not everyone agrees. C. It seemed as if failing in the math test had become a part and parcel of her life. Despite her efforts, she had been unable to perform well. Tears in her eyes, she quickly shoved (乱塞) the paper into her bag before any classmate could make a rude comment on her. Effortlessly, using the back of her palm, she was wiping the tears when her teacher Mrs Leena noticed her. She came to Aliya’s desk and, in a soft voice, asked her to see her during the break time. , Wondering what it could be Aliya waited impatiently for lunchtime. Finally, when the bell rang, she made her way to Mrs Leena. As soon as she saw Aliya, she gestured for her to sit on the empty chair beside her. She carefully studied her face, cleared her throat with a bright smile and said, “You seem to be anxious. I think I know what’s bothering you. If you allow me I think together we may come up with a good solution.” With a puzzled look, she said, “Well ma’am, you know I have been struggling in maths since the beginning of the term. It seems as if no matter how hard I work, I am unable to get the desired result. I feel so upset,” she said sadly. “You need not be so gloomy,” encouraged Mrs Leena. “With these three key ingredients: hard work, determination and resilience (韧性), you will move ahead and succeed. It’s always the first step that’s difficult, but once you decide not to look back and not give up, you will be successful, my dear. Come on, gather yourself and let’s work on it together.” From that day onwards, Aliya worked hard, religiously following her teacher’s advice.
