Where can you find a nice place to relax on holiday for both you and your children?
Well, I suggest you try the beautiful and green Isle of Wight (IOW). The Isle of
Wight is one of the main tourist attractions. Here is some information on a few of the
attractions on the IOW.
Dinosaur Isle
It is located in Sandown, a seaside town on the southeast coast. Its a large,
lovely museum, both fun and educational. Here you can see a large fossil collection of
all kinds of dinosaurs, as well as a gift shop. You can walk into the past and then the
future, learning about the history and the development of the civilization of dinosaurs
that lived 120 million years ago.
Robin Hill Country Park
The park is in the beautiful countryside, and is suitable for childrens parties and
games. It has five new gardens, and offers great opportunities to see and take
pictures of the rare red squirrels.
The West of the Wight
Here we have the Marine Aquarium, the Archaeology Exhibition and the Model
Railway. They offer another opportunity to combine entertainment with learning. This is
a great place to see ancient boats crossing the narrow strait between the island and the
mainland.
The Wight Bus Museum
This museum is run completely by unpaid volunteers. It has a bus collection stored
in what was once a warehouse (仓库). Most of the buses in the museum date back
to around the 1910s.
With all of these choices, what are you waiting for? IOW Tourism welcomes
you!

Bill Knaggy likes collecting things—we might even call him a compulsive (he cant
stop or control what he does) collector. His latest collecting habit is earning him some
unusual fame and, possibly, a little money.
In 1997, Bill Knaggy picked up a thrown-away shopping list at a St Louis
supermarket. He said it was interesting because it gave him an attractive view into a
stranger’s life. Knaggy was interested. He decided to pick grocery lists up wherever he
found them.
In 2000, Knaggy posted his collection of about 40 lists on the Internet. In 2004,
The New York Times Magazine wrote an article about him and his shopping list
collection. By then he had collected about 500 lists.
In early 2006, he started working on a book about the lost lists. When the book
was published—in May 2007—he had 1,600 lists on his website and thousands more
that needed to be posted.
Knaggy book, Milk Eggs Vodka: Shopping Lists Lost and Found, includes
about 300 of the best lists—the funniest, saddest, strangest, unhealthiest and
more. It is a strange, interesting and funny look at other peoples thrown-away
shopping lists.
Knaggy says he learns a lot by reading the lists. He’s surprised by how many people
like onions. And he’s noticed that a lot of people have trouble spelling. Mayonnaise (蛋
黃酱) is always a problem—as are bananas, anchovies (凤尾鱼) and yogurt. But
even common words—rost befe (roast beef), buter (butter), burd fude (bird
food), krakers (crackers), londri sope (laundry soap), and birfday kard
(birthday card)—can cause trouble.
4. What does Bill Knaggy like to do in his free time?
A. Earning fame. B. Learning things.
C. Making money. D. Collecting things.
5. What interested Bill Knaggy in 1997?
A. Doing grocery shopping.
B. Picking up shopping lists.
C. Getting to know others life.
D. Looking into different life views.6. What can we learn by reading Milk Eggs Vodka: Grocery Lists Lost and
Found?
A. Different lifestyles.
B. Different worldviews.
C. Different life attitudes.
D. Different shopping channels.
7. By reading the lists, the author found the problem that many people ______ .
A. like onions B. misspell words
C. is meat-eaters D. are trouble-makers

Airbags, now found in almost every vehicle, have saved countless lives and
largely reduced the severity of injuries in crashes. Similar technology could greatly
reduce broken hips resulting from a fall, something most seniors fear.
Dry Robert Beckman and his start-up company, Active protective in Allentown,
Pennsylvania, has developed a promising solution, a wearable airbag that can
protect hip bones in the event of a fall. The idea was the result of Dry Beckman’s years
as a doctor at Temple University. He noticed how many elderly people were being
brought into hospitals with broken hips due to falls, and how they often never
completely recovered from the injuries. He started to ask what he could do for these
people, and that was when he started trying to figure out whether there was a way of
helping people who were at the highest risk of falling and suffering these kinds of
injuries.
The device is worn much like a regular belt, but on the outside of the clothing,
and it includes sensors that monitor the movement of hips. If the device detects that the
person is falling, an airbag opens before the person hits the ground, cushioning the
fall. When the wearer hits the ground, the bag reduces the force to the hip bones by
90 percent, enough to avoid the majority of hip injuries.
With one out of every three people aged 65 and older suffering serious falls each
year, Active protective has a big market for its wearable device. It also has the
potential to sizably reduce hip-related health care expenses: Hip injuries among the
elderly cost the US health care system in 2012 $30 billion, which doesn’t include the
long-term care expenses associated with the high percentage of patients that can no
longer live independently.
8. What is the purpose of the Active protective airbag?
A. To avoid hip injuries among seniors.
B. To protect seniors from car accidents.C. To help seniors with their daily nursing.
D. To help doctors deal with serious injuries.
9. What inspired Dry Beckman to make the device?
A. A report on senior’s health.
B. A serious fall he experienced.
C. His work experiences as a doctor.
D. Suggestions of seniors at Temple University.
10 How does the device mainly work?
A. By predicting road conditions.
B. By speeding up bone recovery.
C. By reducing the effects of falling.
D. By preventing people from falling.
11. What does the author think of the Active protective airbag?
A. It still needs improving.
B. It has a promising future.
C. It may encourage seniors to do exercise.
D. It may increase Americas spending on seniors.
D
As the most common and popular forms of energy are being used up quickly, the
search to find new sources of energy is underway. These sources of energy must be
renewable and not cause the pollution that fossil fuels do. Among them are solar
energy, geothermal energy, wind energy and tidal energy.
We can get endless solar energy from the sun. The main problem is to collect and
store this energy in an economical way. We can receive energy from the sun with plates
or cells. Collectors put on roofs of houses and other buildings turn solar energy into
heat. With this energy we can heat up water or the air inside. Solar cells transform the
suns light directly into electricity.
Geothermal power can be produced in places where water comes into contact with
hot rock below the earth’s surface. The water that reaches these hot areas turns into
steam, which then produces electricity. Geothermal heat is an important source of
energy in countries or regions that lie in volcanic areas, like Iceland, Italy, New
Zealand or California.
Windmills have been used for centuries to grind grain into flour between two large
stones or pump (用泵输送) water out of areas that have been flooded. Today,
large wind generators turn the power of wind into electricity. Such devices, however, can only be used in places with strong and constant (恒定的) winds. At the
moment, though, costs are too high to produce wind energy on a big scale.
Tidal energy comes from the movement of ocean waves. One way to use the power
of waves is to seal off a bay with a dam. When water moves into and out of the bay it
turns a turbine (涡轮), which produces electricity. There are some coastal areas
around the world where the difference between high and low tide is up to 10 meters or
more. Great Britain, Germany and France have coastal regions where such power can
be created.
12. The main problem about solar energy is how to ___ .
A. find the right place to fix plates or cells B. collect and store it economically
C. use cells to store electricity D. cut down the costs for it
13. Geothermal energy comes from ___ .
A. heat below the earth’s surface B. tides from the sea
C. the wind D. the sun
14. How can windmills be used?
a. To grind grain into flour.
b. To move a turbine by boiling water.
c. To pump water out of flooded areas.
d. To turn the power of wind into electricity.
A. a, b, c B. a, b, d C. a, c, d D. b, c, d
15. What does the text mainly tell us?
A. Tidal energy was used in our daily life centuries ago.
B. We can collect and store energy from the sun for free.
C. Some kinds of energy mentioned in the text will cause air pollution.
D. Environmentally-friendly and renewable sources of energy are badly in need.

One possible version:
Dear Jane,
Glad to hear from you and you’re welcome to China. The following are some
Chinese customs.
Firstly, we greet each other by saying “Hello” or asking such questions as “Where
are you going?” or “I’m over-praised” when praised to show good manners. Next,
when receiving a gift, we usually say “It’s unnecessary” besides “Thanks” to show
politeness and then put it away. Finally, at dinner parties, we talk loudly and touch
glasses when drinking to someone’s health or success to show that were kind.
Anyhow, different cultures have different customs. If you “Do as the Romans do
when in Rome”, you’ll enjoy more of your stay here.
I hope what’s mentioned above might be helpful and wish you a good journey.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
