When I was twelve years old, my father took me to see Zig Zigler. I remember sitting in that dark auditorium
listening to Mr. Zigler raise everyone’s spirits up to the ceiling, feeling like I could do anything. When we got to
the car, I turned to my father and said: “Dad, I want to make people feel like that.” My father asked me what I
meant. “I want to be a motivational speaker just like Mr. Zigler.” I replied. A dream was born.
Recently, after a four-year relationship with a top company beginning as a salesperson and ending as a
regional sales manager, I made my decision to start my own company and leave my secure position after attending
a regional sales meeting. The vice-president of our company delivered a speech that changed my life. He asked us,
“If a genie would grant you three wishes, what would they be?” After giving us a moment to write down the three
wishes, he then asked us, “Why do you need a genie?” I would never forget the shock I felt at that moment. I
realized everything I had accomplished—the graduate degree, the successful sales career, speaking engagements,
training and managing for the company—had prepared me for this moment. I was ready and did not need a genie’s
help to become a motivational speaker.
Having made that decision, I was immediately tested. One week after I left, my husband was laid off from
his job. We had recently bought a new home and needed both incomes to make the monthly mortgage payment and
now we were done to no income. It was alluring to turn back to my former company, but I still wanted to move
forward.
When I held to my dream, even during the tough times, the miracles really began to happen. In a short
period my husband found a better job. We didn’t miss a mortgage payment. I was able to book several speaking
engagements with new clients. I discovered the incredible power of dreams—The world always makes way for the
dreamer.
24. What is “my dream” after listening to the speech?

A. the harder you work, the luckier you are B. the longest journey begins with the first step
C. life is hot for people with dreams D. nothing is impossible to a willing heart
27. Which of the following can best describe the author?
A. Persistent and determined. B. Generous and ambitious.
C. Devoted and determined. D. Confident and aggressive.

Taking in dirty air does great harm to our health. Air pollution lowers the average life spans by a year
worldwide and in more polluted parts of Asia and Africa, dirty air shortens lives up to twice that much. Scientists
shared their new findings in Environmental Science & Technology Letters. The study used data gathered in
2016 as part of a project known as the Global Burden of Disease and was the first major country-by-country look at
the connection between the length of life and what’s known as fine PM.
Air pollution has been linked to many health problems. Most earlier studies had looked at how tiny air
pollutants affected rates of illness or death. Joshua Apte is an environmental scientist at the University of Texas at
Austin. By looking at life expectancy (预期寿命), his team had hoped to make the threat easier to understand.
PM2.5 is what scientists call tiny particles (颗粒) of pollution in the air. Higher levels of PM2.5 can cause health
problems and cut months, if not years, from the average length of life. This analysis shows how pollution affects
life expectancy in different parts of the world.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends limiting PM2.5 to 10 micrograms per cubic meter of air.
Apte’s group calculated how holding pollution to this low level would help people. In countries with very dirty air,
meeting this standard would lengthen people’s lives. However, in countries whose air already meets this standard,
the study shows no gain in life expectancy. In other words, meeting the WHO standard won’t reduce health costs
resulting from dirty air because even below 10 micrograms per cubic meter, pollution still causes serious risks.
Meanwhile, the scientists compared how other threats including smoking and cancer shorten the length of life
across the globe.
28. What is special about the study?
A. It won recognition from a professional journal.
B. It discussed health problems caused by air pollution.C. It gathered lots of data for the Global Burden of Disease.
D. It analyzed the link between life spans and PM by country.
29. What is Joshua Apte’s team trying to do?
A. Help people better understand air pollution. B. Study life expectancy in different countries.
C. Know how small air pollutants affect health. D. Deal with different kinds of health problems.
30. What will happen if a country limits PM2.5 to 10 micrograms per cubic meter of air?
A. People’s life spans will surely increase. B. It will guarantee people clean air.
C. People’s health may not be much improved. D. It will be awarded by the WHO.
31. What might be discussed in the following paragraphs?
A. How other threats shorten life expectancy. B. How cleaning up the air can lengthen lives.
C. How air pollution shortens lives by country. D. How all the countries deal with severe pollution.
D
Search “toxic parents”, and you’ll find more than 38,000 posts, largely urging young adults to cut ties with
their families. The idea is to safeguard one’s mental health from abusive parents. However, as a psychoanalyst (精
神分析学家), I’ve seen that trend in recent years become a way to manage conflicts in the family, and I have seen
the severe impacts estrangement (疏远) has on both sides of the divide. This is a self-help trend that creates much
harm.
“Canceling” your parent can be seen as an extension of a cultural trend aimed at correcting imbalances in
power and systemic inequality. Today’s social justice values respond to this reality, calling on us to criticize
oppressive and harmful figures and to gain power for those who have been powerless. But when adult children use
the most effective tool they have – themselves – to gain a sense of security and ban their parents from their lives,
the roles are simply switched, and the pain only deepens.
Often, what I see in my practice are cases of family conflict mismanaged, power dynamics turned upside down
rather than negotiated. I see the terrible effect of that trend: situations with no winners, only isolated humans who
long to be known and feel safe in the presence of the other.
The catch is that after estrangement, adult children are not suddenly less dependent. In fact, they feel
abandoned and betrayed, because in the unconscious, it doesn’t matter who is doing the leaving; the feeling that
remains is “being left”. They carry the ghosts of their childhood, tackling the emotional reality that those who
raised us can never truly be left behind, no matter how hard we try.
What I have found is that most of these families need repair, not permanent break-up. How can one learn how
to negotiate needs, to create boundaries and to trust? How can we love others, and ourselves, if not throughaccepting the limitations that come with being human? Good relationships are the result not of a perfect level of
harmony but rather of successful adjustments.
To pursue dialogue instead of estrangement will be hard and painful work. It can’t be a single project of “self-
help”, because at the end of the day, real intimacy (亲密关系) is achieved by working through the injuries of the
past together. In most cases of family conflict, repair is possible and preferable to estrangement – and it’s worth the
work.
32. Why do young people cut ties with the family?
A. To gain an independent life. B. To restore harmony in the family.
C. To protect their psychological well-being. D. To follow a tendency towards social justice.
33. What does the underlined word “catch” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Response. B. Problem. C. Operation. D. Emphasis.
34. To manage family conflict, the author agrees that young adults should ________.
A. break down boundaries B. gain power within the family
C. live up to their parents’ expectations D. accept imperfection of family members
35. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the passage?
A. To advocate a self-help trend. B. To justify a common social value.
C. To argue against a current practice. D. To discuss a means of communication.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Even in difficult times, there is opportunity. 36 . It can be a challenging time for parents, involving
emotional and practical changes, but while the empty nest syndrome (综合征) is a particular type of loss, it is also
the start of a new chapter of your life. If you approach it in the right way, it can be just as much a time for self-
discovery as it is a challenge.
Remember: you’re much more than just a parent
No one is defined by only one role. This includes parents―even if they sometimes feel that they are. 3 7 .
You could reinvest in relationships, refocus on your career or become more active in any community involvements
you have.
Remember what your kids want: your happiness
Leaving home is an exciting part of your children’s lives, but it’s unlikely that they’d want it to come at the
expense of your happiness. 3 8 . The more you can find the positives in the situation, the more you’ll be able tobe there for them.
3 9
Big changes are often easier to deal with if you tackle them slowly rather than try to tackle a huge, complex
situation in one go. The same is true of dealing with the loneliness of an empty home. A lot of people instantly cram
(塞满) their diaries and think, “Oh, I’ll keep really, really busy.” But that can mean you’re not allowing yourself
time to reflect on what’s going on.
When your children leave home, it isn’t the end of your relationship with them. It’s the beginning of phase two
of your bond, which will most likely last far, far longer even than the years when you lived together. 40 . Your
relationship with your children hasn’t gone anywhere. It’s going to be a source of great joy for years to come.
A. Whenever your child leaves home, take it seriously
B. Remember to take the long view
C. What’s more, they still need your support
D. Remember to take it a step at a time
E. Far from an ending, it’s a new beginning
F. The same is true of children leaving home
G. Having children leave home is a good opportunity to recognize all the other crucial roles you play

Two years ago, we’d traded our old life in Sydney to sail around the world. Life on the water was extremely
happy: we were finally free of the 9-to-5 grind and our two children enjoyed getting to see the world while being
home-schooled. But one day, looking at the kittens on the dock at a port in Greece, the kids asked, ”Can we please
have a pet?" Guy and I were hesitant at first, but after some thought it made sense that living on a boat would be the
best time to welcome an animal into our lives -we would be with it 24/7 and could give it plenty of attention. We
decided a dog would be better-suited to sea life.
After doing some research about what it would take to bring a dog back home to Australia as we sailed back, Idecided a dachshund (腊肠狗) would make the ideal pet. They were low to the ground, easy to transport, good boat
security and loving, intelligent dogs. Guy hadn’t had a little dog before and doubted a little. But my cute photos
eventually worked their magic and we headed to a town in Sicily to meet a breeder who had some miniature
dachshunds. And the minute we laid eyes on the brown pup, we knew she was the one for us. We called her
Pipsqueak-or Pip for short-and welcomed her onto the boat.
The first few days with Pip saw us encounter some rough weather, but she took it all in her stride (从容应对).
The kids fell in love with her instantly. Pip was never far from our side, even accompanying us to museums and
galleries. Our sails saw us cross the Atlantic Ocean to the United States, and then we decided to sail home to
Australia. But when COVID-19 hit, it became complicated: we had to get on a flight quickly as borders around the
world were closing fast. Problem was, we couldn’t take Pip. After much discussion, Guy and I decided that we
would have to leave her with a friend while we flew home. Handing our dog over was utterly heartbreaking. It’ll
only be for a couple of weeks, I told myself.
