Chika’s father is alive. We were always told he was dead. Now differently!
We drove to where Chika was born. Stepping out in front of me was her father. I asked about Chika’s infancy.
He answered every inquiry with very few words. I didn’t ask why he didn’t want Chika back. I reminded myself he
had lost his partner in that earthquake, the mother of his children.
I explained the reason why I came—Chika’s medical condition—the brain tumor (肿瘤). I explained that her
life could be in the balance. I said I had a hard question. If Chika should not survive,is it important to him that she
be buried here in Haiti?
“It doesn’t matter,” he said. “ Whatever you think.”
I eventually came to my utmost mission. I wanted him to see his daughter—and her to see him—perhaps
because, deep down, I doubted about another chance. Yet as we drove back together, there was part of me feeling as
if I had been nudged (轻推) to the side of the picture. Although Janine and I have done with Chika, this man has a
certain claim that we never will.
Yours, not yours! The paperwork at the orphanage (孤儿院) was signed by me. It obligates us to nurture, feed,
educate, and protect you. But in the end, it is a document, not parenthood. Yours, not yours! We wrestled with this
question many times, Chika. Remember what you once asked? How did you find me? I promised myself you would
never feel lost again.
After two hours, the father walked over, shook my hand, and left. That night, Chika rested her head upon my
shoulder and after a few seconds mumbled, “Mister Mitch? What will you do while I sleep?”
“I’ll read,” I said. “And think about how much I love you.”She nodded, her eyes glowed. “That’s what I’ll do too.”
At that moment, I didn’t care who belonged to whom. I was hers, even if she were not mine.
24. Why did my wife and I call on Chika’s father?
A. To accuse him of his fake death. B. To ask him about Chika’s condition.
C. To persuade him of our legal parenthood. D. To invite him to see Chika one last time.
25. What does the underlined phrase “in the balance” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Evaluated. B. Undetermined. C. Lengthened. D. Unexplained.
26. How did I feel as I drove Chika’s father back?
A. Unclear and thrilled. B. Eager and relieved. C. Uneasy and troubled.D. Embarrassed and bored.
27. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. My Love, Not Mine! B. Who Is “Legal” Father?
C. Your Father, Not Yours! D. Who Belongs to Whom?
C
Struggling to remember your password again? New tech called a “passkey” will soon make logging in easier
and more secure. What is a passkey? Passkeys make use of biometric technology to keep your data secure.
Logging in with a passkey will actually be more secure than typing a password. Once passkeys are the norm,
they won’t just save us from having to remember passwords but, perhaps logging in with a passkey will actually be
more secure than typing a password.
This is because it takes advantage of a technology called “public key” cryptography (密码学), which is one of
the building blocks of the internet—and is how computers have securely communicated with other computers for
decades. The way it works is by doing some very clever maths. Simply put, it works a bit like a key. With a
password, the website has to ultimately contain a database of everyone’s passwords to check against when you
login. But with a passkey, when you create your account on a website, it will effectively create a brand new padlock
and key. The website will keep the padlock—and only your phone will have the key.
Passkeys help guard against two common forms of digital attack. First, it guards against data breaches —
situations where hackers gain access to a database of passwords. This is because, unlike most people who repeat
their passwords, each passkey is unique. This means even if the pizza delivery place is hacked, it won’t give away
the same password you use for your emails.
And secondly, passkeys make things much harder for “phishing” scams—when a website tries to trick you
into thinking that it is really your bank’s website or similar, so it can steal your login details. These scams will no
longer work as well, because passkeys have another mathematical trick up their sleeve: they’re always changing. When you log in and your digital wallet has to send over an unlock code, the code it sends will only be useful for a
few seconds at a time—so even if a hacker does get hold of your key very briefly, 30 seconds later it will be useless
anyway.
So, next time you’re frustrated that you can’t remember your password, don’t worry too much. It won’t always
be like this!
28. Why will logging in with a passkey be more secure than typing a password?
A. Because it’s hard to remember so many passwords.
B. Because the website can contain a database of many passkeys to check against when you login.
C. Because your phone will have the only key to the padlock by using a passkey.
D. Because it is very clever to solve some maths problems.
29. What does the underlined word “breach” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Safety. B. A collection. C. Understanding. D. An opening.
30. Why do passkeys make things much harder for “phishing scams”?
A. Because a website tries to trick you into thinking that it is really your bank’s website or similar.
B. Because when you log in, your digital wallet will send over a fixed code.
C. Because passkeys are always changing.
D. Because a hacker can get hold of your key for 30 seconds.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards passkeys?
A. Optimistic. B. Ambiguous. C. Pessimistic. D. Indifferent.
D
Most of us still have lots of photographs sitting around from the days when we used cameras, not telephones,
to take pictures. There are probably many photos stockpiled in the corner of our drawers, some of which have
faded out with the years. We occasionally have a look at these film-developed photos. These images, representing
memories from our past, should be kept forever.
Google has created a tool to help bring these forgotten pictures back to life in very high quality. The recently-
launched PhotoScan app works the same as an image scanner. But this software program uses the camera on your
phone to capture images as digital copies. It is a quick and easy way to save old photos without having to spend
money on new equipment.
The PhotoScan app uses new technology to improve the capturing process. This makes it possible to take a
picture of a photo with a camera phone, without glare, a common problem. After opening the app, the user first
positions the desired photo within the camera’s frame. When this is done, four small circles appear in differentplaces over the photo. The user then moves the phone over each of the circles, which change color after the process
is complete. And that’s it! The app finds the edges of the photo, straightens the image, and puts it in the right
position while removing glare. From this point, the pictures can easily be saved to the Google Photos app or
somewhere else. If you do have Google Photos, images are organized by face or place and can easily be searched.
The release of PhotoScan came at the same time as some changes to the Google Photos app. One change is an
improved auto-enhance tool that Google says creates high-quality effects in just one step. Another change lets users
choose from 12 different looks to improve overall photo quality. The third provides high-level controls for
changing light and colors.
PhotoScan is available now for both Android and iOS.
32. What does the underlined word “stockpiled” probably mean?
A. Stored away. B. Sorted out. C. Thrown away. D. Picked out.
33. What can we know about PhotoScan?
A. It should be attached to a new device. B. It can cope with the glare problem.
C. It can enlarge old film-developed photos. D. It can help classify your photos.
34. What change does Google Photos app make?
A. Adding the facial recognition function. B. Deleting high-level control.
C. Introducing an auto-enhance tool. D. Offering 12 photo qualities.
35. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. New technology betters our daily life. B. New Google app brightens your photos.
C. New Google app brings old photos back to life. D. New technology makes every moment unforgettable.

第二节(满分 25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was in Grade 10, my family had a tough time. My parents lost their jobs during the Depression. Dad
was too ill to work outside, while mum had a hard time raising us kids on her own in our small community. We
relied on our community assistance to keep us clothed, and although our clothes were second-hand, we thought
they were beautiful.
Looking back, I realize what Mum went through for sending us kids to school. Every morning she would put a
new piece of cardboard in our shoes, because our shoes were worn out. Constant moving was typical for my family
in these times. Rent was twenty-five dollars a month, but Mum couldn’t pay it. These were hard and sad years, but
we never complained.
New Year was approaching, and we were entitled to a twenty-five dollar fund for social services. Mum said
that instead of buying food, she would use the money to pay back rent, assuring us all of a roof over our heads for a
little while longer. She told us then there would be nothing for New Year.
Unknown to Mum, I had been shoveling snow and doing odd jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of
gloves. I knew exactly which gloves I wanted. They were made of genuine leather and they had a price of twenty-
three dollars. Well, the big day came on the last day of that year. I was very excited, as I hurried up to catch the bus.
It was only a half-a-mile walk, but on the way I noticed a house with lights and decorations. It was then that I
realized at our house, we had no lights, no decorations, nor any money for goodies. I knew then that we would have
no delicious food for New Year, and I felt sad.
As I continued walking, I began to feel bewildered. I was sixteen years old, and I was feeling a strange sense
of guilt. Here I was going to buy a new pair of gloves while Mum was home in tears. She would be trying to
explain to us why there were no presents.
