Paris may be best-known as the city of love, but it’s also the city of book lovers! Here are some of the literary
landmarks you should add to your travel bucket list.
Brasserie Lipp
151 Boulevard Saint-Germain
This brasserie has long been a popular haunt for creatives. In its early days it was popular among actors from a
nearby theatre group called Vieux-Colombier. Later, writers came in droves, and in 1949 it was the site of a falling-
out between James Baldwin and Richard Wright. A literary prize called the Prix Cazes to reward authors who
hadn’t been successful in literary competitions before was created and has been staged annually since 1935.
Père Lachaise Cemetery
8 Boulevard de Menilmontant
When it first opened, this cemetery was not a popular burial spot. It was some way away from the city centre
and it had not been blessed by the church. In a marketing ploy (市场营销策略), the cemetery acquired the remains
of some notable literary figures. In a matter of decades, the cemetery had become the final resting place of many
writers, including Balzac, Oscar Wilde and Gertrude Stein.
Shakespeare and Company
37 Rue de la Bûcherie
This Paris bookshop was opened in 1919 by American Sylvia Beach, on the encouragement of her French
partner, Adrienne Monnier. When it opened, it primarily sold English-language books, and it attracted various
iconic English-speaking clientele, including Gertrude Stein and Ernest Hemingway.
The shop was closed during the Second World War. After the war, an eccentric US ex-serviceman GeorgeWhitman opened a bookshop called Le Mistral, which he stocked with many books bought from Beach. After
Beach’s death, Whitman renamed his shop Shakespeare and Company, and today it is owned by his daughter
Sylvia.
Abbey Bookshop
29 Rue de la Parcheminerie
One of Paris’s most famous English-language bookstores, the Abbey Bookshop was established in 1989 by
Canadian Brian Spence. It’s a labyrinth (迷宫) of books that spill out onto the pavement outside.
21. Who are the intended readers?
A. People who love Paris. B. People who enjoy travelling.
C. People who are fond of reading books. D. People who are keen on travelling and literature.
22. What do the last two places have in common?
A. They sell English-language books.
B. They have literary prize awarded annually.
C. They attracted various iconic English-speaking clientele.
D. They are labyrinths of books displayed in the open air.
23. What makes Père Lachaise Cemetery popular?
A. A famous burial spot. B. A place the church valued a lot.
C. A popular place for many writers. D. A final resting place for some great literary giants.

Anna Steed doesn’t look much older than her
students, but she is a practitioner of behavioral and motivational science, a shoulder to cry on, and the high school
debate coach. Her class, which began as an elective class to give students exposure to skills that prepare them for
college, has become the class on campus that creates winners.
Speech and debate test the teenage character perhaps more than any other activity. The shy and the unsure
often have no desire to look up from their screens and engage in the oldest human interaction: persuasive oral
arguments. It’s dreadful territory for the average teenager. Research, writing, delivering a speech in front of your
peers --it all sounds like the kind of class students would be most likely to skip. But Anna draws them in.
Classroom 161 is always full. Anna’s debate teams have a case full of medals; most importantly, they have
gone on to become leaders of their communities and examples to their families.
“This activity has changed my life. Just building connections with people I never, ever imagined building
connections with,” relates Alexander Hernandez Gonzalez. Alexander suffered from social anxiety throughout hischildhood. Then he discovered debate as a freshman, and it changed his life.
What drives young people to stand up and passionately deliver a speech in front of a crowd full of strangers, a
panel of judges and opposing teams from more privileged high schools? The person who will always have their
back: Anna Steed.
“I want them to just have the memory of making it through, succeeding in a place like that and expressing a
story that leaves that place better,” Anna says.
That better place begins in room 161 when unsure and nervous students enter for the first time. After setbacks
and adjustments, a lot of hugs, encouragement, and hours of late-night study and practice, they roll out a few years
later with their shoulders back and a full tank of confidence, ready to take on the next stage of life.
24. What is paragraph 2 of the text mainly about?
A. The challenging nature of debate. B. The value of being a debate teacher.
C. The influence of debate on teenagers. D. The difficulties of winning awards in debate.
25. According to Alexander’s personal experience, debate offer _________ to change his life.
A. a stage to showcase his talent. B. a drive for academic excellence.
C. a platform to establish social bonds. D. a chance to connect with Anna Steed.
26. What do the underlined words “that place” in paragraph 6 refer to?
A. Anna’s class. B. The privileged classroom.
C. Unfamiliar territory. D. The next stage of life.
27. Which of the following can best describe Anna Steed?
A. Devoted and generous. B. Hard-working and honest.
C. Courageous and tolerant . D. Impactful and supportive.

In 2022, campaign group Fashion Revolution Chelsea dye
garden for its Chelsea Flower Show presentation. An ancient craft, natural dyeing is a practice whose time has
come again, with hand tie-dyed fashion also making a comeback in recent years.
The revival has been encouraged by Covid lockdowns, “which allowed people to explore the craft at home,”
says natural-dyeing enthusiast and teacher Susan Dye. It’s unlikely, though, that the practice would have caught on
in quite the same way if not for a continually growing discomfort about fashion’s heavy footprint. From carbon
emissions to animal cruelty, fashion is under considerable inspection. “Put it this way, 97% of dyes used in the
industry are petrochemically (石油化学产品) based,” says sustainable fashion consultant Jackie Andrews, who
helped advise the UN Ethical Fashion Initiative. “We’ve got net zero targets which mean we’re going to have toremove all those petrochemicals from the manufacturing cycle.”
Fashion is a huge polluter. According to the UN Environment Program, the industry is responsible for up to
one-fifth of all industrial water pollution — due to the fact that most clothes today are produced in poorer countries
where regulation is weak and enforcement weaker still. Waste water is dumped directly into rivers and streams,
poisoning the land as well as the water sources of people and animals who rely on them.
It’s easy to see why someone who cares about people, planet and animals, as well as clothes, might turn to
natural plant dyeing. From the beauty of the raw materials-often wild plants-to the property of only bonding with
natural fiber like cotton and linen, from the minor footprint of upclycling old clothing that has grayed or faded over
time to the vibrant and long-lasting dyeing results, plant dyeing feels like a quiet act of rebellion. This is why,
while beginners start with simply changing their clothes’ color, new worlds open. Many of today’s natural dyers
grow their own dye plants, run local community workshops, and advocate for change in industrialized fashion
systems and beyond.
28. What is the main reason for the growing discomfort mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. The adoption of petrochemical-based dyes.
B. The challenging net zero targets to be achieved.
C. The fashion industry’s focus on luxurious designs.
D. The disturbing consequences of the fashion industry.
29. The author illustrates “Fashion is a huge polluter” by ______.
A. making a comparison B. giving examples C. listing numbers D. introducing a new topic
30. What does the underlined phrase “a quiet act of rebellion” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. A protest against turning to natural fiber. B. An objection to upcycling old clothing.
C. A struggle for a sustainable fashion industry. D. A resistance to vibrant colors in natural dyeing.
31. What would be the most suitable title for the passage?
A. The Environmental Impact of Natural Dyeing
B. Fashion Revolution’s Dye Garden Presentation
C. The Return of Natural Dyeing with Ethical Appeal
D. The Petrochemical Dye Industry and Its Challenges

Many early approaches to language technology—and
particularly translation—got stuck in a conceptual dead end: the rules-based approach. In translation, this meant
trying to write rules to analyze the text of a sentence in the language of origin, breaking it down into a sort ofabstract “interlanguage” and rebuilding it according to the rules of the target language. These approaches showed
early promise. But language is full of ambiguities (歧义) and exceptions, so such systems were hugely
complicated and easily broke down when tested on sentences beyond the simple set they had been designed for.
Nearly all language technologies began to get a lot better with the application of statistical methods, often
called a “brute force” approach. This relies on software scanning vast amounts of data, looking for patterns and
learning from precedent. For example, in parsing language (breaking it down into its grammatical components), the
software learns from large bodies of text that have already been parsed by humans. It uses what it has learned to
make its best guess about a previously unseen text. In machine translation, the software scans millions of words
already translated by humans, again looking for patterns. In speech recognition, the software learns from a body of
recordings and the transcriptions made by humans.
Thanks to the growing power of processors, falling prices for data storage and, most crucially, the explosion in
available data, this approach eventually bore fruit. Mathematical techniques that had been known for decades came
into their own, and big companies with access to enormous amounts of data were ready to benefit.
The final advance, which began only about five years ago, came with the arrival of deep learning through
digital neural networks (DNNs). These are often claimed to have qualities similar to those of the human brain:
“neurons” are connected in software, and connections can become stronger or weaker in the process of learning.
But Nils Lenke, head of research for a language technology company, explains matter-of-factly that “DNNs are just
another kind of mathematical model,” the basis of which had been well understood for decades. What changed was
the hardware being used.
Almost by chance, DNN researchers discovered that the graphical processing units (GPUs) used to produce
graphics in applications like video games were also brilliant at handling neural networks. The technique has already
produced big leaps in quality for all kinds of deep learning, including decoding handwriting, recognizing faces and
classifying images. Now they are helping to improve all manner of language technologies, often bringing
enhancements of up to 30%. That has shifted language technology from usable at a pinch to really rather good. But
so far no one has quite worked out what will move it on from merely good to reliably great.
32. According to the passage, which of the following is a problem of the rules-based approach?
A. Rules are difficult to identify in some languages.
B. It is impossible to find all the rules in a language.
C. The rules are often misinterpreted by researchers.
D. There are always rules too abstract to understand.33. ________ has a part to play in enabling the “brute force” approach to gradually bear fruit?
A. The increasing amount of data B. The falling prices of scanning software
C. The availability of recordings and transcripts D. The wider knowledge people have of language
34. Which of the following is Nils Lenke most likely to agree with about DNNs?
A. They are a big breakthrough. B. They depend more on hardware.
C. They are not innovative in nature. D. They haven’t been scientifically proved.
35. What does the writer imply about GPUs?
A. They are inferior to DNNs in their quality of deep learning.
B. They have made language technology reliably greater than ever.
C. They have achieved limited success regarding language technology.
D. They help enhance language technologies by means of image classification.

The expression, “everybody’s doing it” is very much at
the center of the concept pressure. It is a social influence applied on an individual in order to get that person to act
or believe in a similar way as a larger group. 3 6 Most people experience it in some way during their lives.
People are social creatures by nature. 3 7 This instinct explains why the approval of peers, and the fear of
disapproval is such powerful force in many people’s lives. This instinct drives people to dress one way at home and
another way at work, or to answer a simple “fine” when a stranger asks “How are You?” even if it is not necessarily
true. There is a practical aspect to this. It helps society function efficiently. Additionally, it simplifies day-to-day
interaction between people.
3 8 They may go too far as to abandon their sense of right and wrong. Teens and young adults may feel
forced to use drugs; mature adults get into debt because they try to keep up with others by buying expensive things
they can’t afford, like houses or cars. 3 9 A student whose friends are good at academic may be urged to work
harder and get good grades. Players on a sports team may feel driven to play harder in order to help the team win.
Although peer pressure is sometimes quite obvious, it can also be subtle that a person may not even notice that
it is affecting their behavior. For this reason, when making important decisions, simply going with an instinct is
risky. Instead, people should seriously consider why they feel drawn to taking a particular action. 4 0
A. However, peer pressure is not always negative.
B. Being self-aware is at the root of managing peer pressure.C. This influence can be negative or positive in any group size.
D. Giving in to peer pressure can have emotional consequences.
E. They should also question if they are just following the crowd.
F. Some individuals become addicted to seeking social acceptance.
G. Consequently, their self-esteem often comes from others’ approval.

We ate a big breakfast at a local restaurant, like we did every Father’s Day. The present my daughter gave me
was a T-shirt with the words “World’s Coolest Dad”. I put it on, feeling that was what made Father’s Day so great.
Just then my volunteer fire-department pager (呼机) went off: “Attention, Pocahontas-Old Ripley firefighters!
House fire on Simpson Street. Repeat. House fire on Simpson Street.”
“Gotta go,” I said. I ran to my car and took off. I got to the firehouse in minutes. Another firefighter, Tom
Smith, and the chief were waiting. “Don, Tommy, take truck 253. Roll!” he ordered. “The rest of the guys will be
right behind you.” As the first on the scene, our job was to make sure everyone was out of the house, locate the
nearest hydrant (消防栓), and then wait for backup.
A small crowd had gathered in front of number 907 when we got there. They watched the fire in panic. Thick
black smoke could be seen pouring from the one-story house’s open front door. A large man burst through the door, red eyes streaming with tears. “Please hurry!” he called. “My boy’s still in there. I couldn’t get to him!”
There was no time to wait for backup. I left Tommy outside and rushed into the house.
“Anyone here?” I shouted. No answer. I searched every inch of the first two rooms. No child. The fire had
grown so fierce by then. It seemed that the roof would collapse at any time. All at once a vision was put into my
head—that father begging us to save his child. I mustn’t give up. Not today, I thought. There still might be a
chance.

imagination and passion to create. (19)
Lin’s passion for robotics began in his first year at high school in 2018 (20), when a teacher discovered
his talent for computers and advanced his skills. One year later, he developed a smart home system, which
made him understand how his products could help others. (20) As a university freshman now, Lin believes he
and his products will make a difference in the future.

来源:Literary landmarks you need to visit in Paris - Reader’s Digest
https://www.readersdigest.co.uk/lifestyle/travel/places-to-visit/7-literary-landmarks-you-need-to-visit-in-paris
Here are some of the literary landmarks you should add to your travel
bucket list.
根据“When it opened, it primarily sold English-language books”和 One of Paris’s most
24. A 25. C 26. A 27. D
Speech and debate test the teenage character perhaps more than any other
activity. The shy and the unsure often have no desire to look up from their screens and engage in the oldest human
interaction: persuasive oral arguments. It’s dreadful territory for the average teenager. Research, writing, delivering
a speech in front of your peers --it all sounds like the kind of class students would be most likely to skip.
故选A。
This activity has changed my life. Just building connections with people I never,
ever imagined building connections with,” relates Alexander Hernandez Gonzalez. Alexander suffered from social
anxiety throughout his childhood. Then he discovered debate as a freshman, and it changed his life.
Her class, which began as an elective class to give students exposure to
skills that prepare them for college, has become the class on campus that creates winners.(她的课最初是一门选修
want them to just have the memory of making it through, succeeding in a place like that and expressing a story that
leaves that place better’.”
27. 推理判断题。根据第三段“Classroom 161 is always full. Anna’s debate teams have a case full of medals;
most importantly, they have gone on to become leaders of their communities and examples to their families. (161
”可推断Anna是有影响力的;再根据第五段“What drives young people to stand up and passionately deliver a
speech in front of a crowd full of strangers, a panel of judges and opposing teams from more privileged high
schools? The person who will always have their back: Anna Steed.
It’s unlikely, though, that the practice would have caught on in quite the same
way if not for a continually growing discomfort about fashion’s heavy footprint. From carbon emissions to animal
cruelty, fashion is under considerable inspection.
Fashion is a huge polluter. According to the UN Environment Program, the
industry is responsible for up to one-fifth of all industrial water pollution — due to the fact that most clothes today
are produced in poorer countries where regulation is weak and enforcement weaker still. Waste water is dumped
directly into rivers and streams, poisoning the land as well as the water sources of people and animals who rely on
them.
It’s easy to see why someone who cares about people, planet and animals, as well
as clothes, might turn to natural plant dyeing. From the beauty of the raw materials-often wild plants-to the
property of only bonding with natural fiber like cotton and linen, from the minor footprint of upclycling old
clothing that has grayed or faded over time to the vibrant and long-lasting dyeing results, plant dyeing feels like a
quiet act of rebellion.
a quiet act of
In 2022, campaign group Fashion Revolution Chelsea dye garden for its Chelsea
Flower Show presentation. An ancient craft, natural dyeing is a practice whose time has come again, with hand tie-
dyed fashion also making a comeback in recent years.
32. B 33. A 34. C 35. C
Many early approaches to language technology—and particularly translation—
got stuck in a conceptual dead end: the rules-based approach. In translation, this meant trying to write rules to
analyze the text of a sentence in the language of origin, breaking it down into a sort of abstract “interlanguage” andrebuilding it according to the rules of the target language. These approaches showed early promise. But language is
full of ambiguities (歧义) and exceptions, so such systems were hugely complicated and easily broke down when
tested on sentences beyond the simple set they had been designed for.(许多早期的语言技术方法,尤其是翻译,
This relies on software scanning vast amounts of data, looking for patterns and
learning from precedent.(这依赖于软件扫描大量数据,寻找模式并从先例中学习)”以及第三段“Thanks to the
growing power of processors, falling prices for data storage and, most crucially, the explosion in available data, this
故选A。
But Nils Lenke, head of research for a language technology company,
explains matter-of-factly that “DNNs are just another kind of mathematical model,” the basis of which had been
well understood for decades. What changed was the hardware being used.(但是语言技术公司的研究主管 Nils
That has shifted language technology from usable at a pinch to really rather
good. But so far no one has quite worked out what will move it on from merely good to reliably great.(这使得语言
C 37. G 38. F 39. A 40. E

C“This influence can be negative or positive in
any group size.(这种影响在任何规模的群体中都可能是消极的或积极的。)”

This instinct explains why the approval of peers, and the fear of disapproval is such powerful
force in many people’s lives.(这种本能解释了为什么同龄人的认可和对不认可的恐惧在许多人的生活中是如
G“Consequently, their self-esteem
often comes from others’ approval.(因此,他们的自尊往往来自于别人的认可。)”
They may go too far as to abandon their sense of right and wrong. Teens and young adults

expensive things they can’t afford, like houses or cars.(他们可能走得太远,以至于放弃了他们的是非观。
F“Some individuals
become addicted to seeking social acceptance.(有些人沉迷于寻求社会认可。)”
A student whose friends are good at academic may be urged to work harder and get good
grades. Players on a sports team may feel driven to play harder in order to help the team win.(一个学生的朋友在
A“However, peer pressure is not always
negative.(然而,同辈压力并不总是负面的。)”中的“however”符合上下文逻辑关系,是上文内容的转折;
故选A。
Although peer pressure is sometimes quite obvious, it can also be subtle that a person may not
even notice that it is affecting their behavior. For this reason, when making important decisions, simply going with
an instinct is risky. Instead, people should seriously consider why they feel drawn to taking a particular action.(虽
E“They should also question if they are just following the crowd.(他们也应该质疑自己是否只是在随大

Dear Robert,
Thank your for your congratulations! Learning that you take interest in the video production process, I’m
writing to give you some introduction. My team first decided on Chinese herbal medicine as the item to explore, after which we assigned each
member a task. One of us took charge of collecting materials online, another getting in contact with the factory we
were to visit, and I making preparations for video shooting. Under the experts’ guidance, we even went on a field
trip to look for herbal medicine in the nearby mountain, gaining first-hand knowledge of herbs. The final step of the
video production witnessed a lot of revision and improvements, during which we had repeated discussion. In brief,
it was our collective efforts that contributed to our success.
I greatly value the opportunity to team up with my partners and share the happiness of harvest. Besides, I feel
extremely honored and proud to promote traditional Chinese culture through my own efforts. Looking forward to
more communication with you!
Yours,
Li Hua

Suddenly I heard a weak cry from the next room. Immediately I rushed there and found the boy lying on the
floor in just about the only spot that wasn’t on fire. Without any delay, I just grabbed him and rushed out. A great
cheer went up from the crowd as I carried the boy to safety. The boy’s father, with tears in his eyes, thanked me
again and again. The boy was soon taken to hospital and it looked like he would be fine.
It was a special Father’s Day not only for me, but also for the boy, his father and my daughter. On that special
day, I did what a father is supposed to do for a child. For this child, he was rescued from the jaws of death by a
father whom he didn’t know. And for his own father, just as one of the neighbors said, I gave another dad the
greatest gift anyone ever could. And in my daughter’s eyes, I became a hero, because I showed her that day what a
“world’s Coolest Dad” was really like.
