Even though it’s only even odds that 2022 turned out to be less of a disaster than 2021 (or 2020), at least 2022
was the best recent year for compiling(汇编) a list of science anniversaries.
Louis Pasteur, 200th birthdayLouis Pasteur was born in France in December 1822. His interests tended toward art, but later some inspiring
lectures shifted his attention to chemistry, and he became one of the greatest chemists of all time, also one of the
greatest biologists. Although he received no medical education, he provided the foundation for modern medicine’s
ability to fight disease.
Gregor Mendel, 200th birthday
Born on July 22, 1822 to a family of farmers, Mendel preferred higher education to farming, enrolling in a
philosophy programme properly complemented(补充) with maths and physics. When the time came to return home
and take charge of the family farm, he chose instead to enter a monastery. He did not particularly enjoy his priestly
duties, though, so he got a job as a teacher, which required him to enter the University of Vienna for advanced
science education. There, in addition to more maths and physics, he encountered botany.
Aage Niels Bohr, 100th birthday
Aage Niels Bohr was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics in 1922, the same year as the birth of his son Aage.
Aage grew up surrounded by physicists and so naturally became a physicist himself. During World War Ⅱ, Aage
accompanied his father to the United States to work on the Manhattan Project, afterwards returning to his native
Denmark to earn his Ph. D.at the University of Copenhagen.
Invention of mathematical weather forecasting, 100th anniversary
Lewis Fry Richardson, a mathematician who later turned to psychology, worked early in his career at
England’s National Peat Industries. He was given the task of calculating optimal designs of drainage systems for
peat moss subjected to different amounts of rain. He worked out the equations and then realized they could be
applied to other problems, such as predicting the weather.
21.Who wants to know about Louis Pasteur more probably?
A.A mathematician. B.A physicist.
C.An artist. D.A medical student.
22.What is special about Aage Bohr?
A.He is the only one related to physics.
B.He is the only one awarded the Nobel Prize.
C.He is the only one who ever changed his subject.
D.He is the only one who entered the university.
23.Who made great contributions to weather forecasting?
A.Louis Pasteur. B.Gregor Mendel.C.Aage Bohr. D.Lewis Fry Richardson.

Amanda Kofoeds had found a strange lump in her arm one day and visited a doctor at a friend's urging. During
this time, she was enrolled in school for education and was currently uninsured due to the expense. She planned to
save money so she could get on her husband' s insurance and then seek medical treatment for the cancer.
Her friends and family didn't want her to postpone her treatment due to the expense. They took matters into
their own hands and started a GoFundMe campaign. The friend came up with the creative idea to spread the word
and invite family, friends, and strangers who wanted to help to participate in a donation flash mob (快闪行动).The
event started an outpouring of enormous generosity from the local community.
Amanda and her husband Clint teared up as the crowd passed by and the donations poured in. The generous
act of kindness gave the family a comforting, and optimistic feeling during a time when all hope seemed lost. Clint
said that Amanda struggled with the idea of asking for help. She felt guilty and undeserving compared to others
who are also struggling.
In the time since, Amanda has enrolled in an insurance plan and has finished chemotherapy. Life for the family
has started getting back to their normal routine.
Once Amanda got her strength back, she returned to school and completed her bachelor's degree in education.
She is now a teacher. She said the experience motivated her to instill (灌输) the value of charity in her children. The
family is now inspired to volunteer in their local neighborhood and contribute to crowdfunding (众筹) efforts. They
are grateful for the opportunity to give back and help others as many have helped them.
The couple said they feel blessed by the strong support. PassItOn wants to celebrate those heroes during the
family's darkest time. These individuals perfectly demonstrate the value of community. It is with the help of their
generosity that the family is now happy, healthy and whole.
24.Why did Amanda Kofoeds postpone her treatment?
A.She was admitted to a school.
B.Her family couldn't afford the medical cost.
C.No good doctors could treat her cancer.
D.Her friends and family refused to assist her.
25.What did her friends do to help Amanda Kofoeds?
A.They started a donation flash mob.
B.They founded a community school.C.They supported her through local hospitals.
D.They fought for assistance from the whole country.
26.Which word best describes the couple's feeling when strongly supported?
A.Guilty. B.Satisfied. C.Anxious. D.Grateful.
27.What can we learn from Amanda Kofoeds' story?
A.Hard work pays off.
B.The value of charity is great.
C.Education is the key to success.
D.A friend is never known till a man has need.

Everyone knows what makes a good story. Our hero starts their journey as a flawed being. In scene after
scene, they face challenges that push them down new paths. By the end of the talc, they overcome setbacks and
become a better person in the process.
We love these plots in the novels we read but the principles of a good story offer much more than
entertainment. Recent research shows that the narratives we tell ourselves about our lives can powerfully help us
recover from stress. People who generate tales of struggling and turning over a new leaf from their own lives
appear to have much better mental health. Professor Dan McAdams put forward this idea and discovered that
whether someone can describe having had some control over events in their past is an important predictor of mental
health. Another key theme involved is finding some kind of positive meaning after stressful events.
McAdams invited 14 and 15-year-olds to join in an experiment to write about their experiences of failure and
success. Half of them were then given extra instructions to describe the ways they had made their success a reality
and how the failure had changed them for the better. Eight weeks later, members of this group reported greater
persistence and better grades in their schoolwork.
Exciting as these results are, some experts sound a few notes of caution. They worry that, hearing about the
power of self-narratives, many people may feel they have to find a positive turning point in life. If they can’t, they
could end up feeling guilty about having somehow “failed”.
Clearly, self-narratives aren’t the panacea. Nevertheless, if you hope for self-improvement, you can use the
findings to good effect. By recognizing ourselves as the hero at the center of our own struggles, we can all become
the author of our own destiny and change ourselves for the better.
28.What does the research focus on?A.The causes of stress.
B.The principles of narrative.
C.The connection between struggle and well-being.
D.The link between mental health and self-narratives.
29.Why is the experiment mentioned in paragraph 3?
A.To give proof. B.To make predictions.
C.To draw a conclusion. D.To make comparisons.
30.What does the underlined word “panacea” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.Attempt to get rid of worries.
B.Means of recognizing yourself.
C.Solution to adolescent problems.
D.Guarantee to become better people.
31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Embrace Life Struggles
B.Be Your Own Hero
C.Ways to Make a Good Story
D.The Power of Self-improvement

Interactive software that “reads” and analyses footprints left by black rhinos (犀牛) can be used to monitor the
movements of the animals in the wild, giving conservationists a new way to keep watch on the endangered species
and help keep it safe from poachers (偷猎者), according to a Duke University-led study.
The software, called the Footprint Identification Technique (FIT), uses advanced technology to analyze more
than 100 measurements of a rhino's footprint. Because each rhino's footprint is as special as a human fingerprint,
the analyzed images can be collected electronically in a global database of previously collected footprint images for
matching.
“If you find a match, you can identify the individual animal who left the mark and, by plotting the locations of
all the other places where marks have been seen, track its movements without disturbing it or coming into close
enough contact with it,” said Zoe Jewell, a professor at Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment,
who co-led the study and is co-creator of FIT.
“It's a cost-effective approach that not only protects the health of the rhino and the human, but also brings a
centuries-old tracking skill into the 21st Century,” she said. Jewell and her colleagues are now working withNamibia's Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism to train wildlife conservationists, land managers and
local guides how to use FIT.
Namibia is home to an estimated 2,000 black rhinos, or about 90% of the species' total population worldwide.
Though legally owned by the government, the animals are distributed geographically on private lands across the
country.
The FIT software can also do a survey of footprints throughout the protected area and take measurements from
each footprint to estimate the number of rhinos in that area. This can be useful information for calculation resource
needs to monitor the animals effectively. This creates an interactive library that anti-poaching patrols(反偷猎巡
逻)can use to search for animals at the highest risk, including those whose footprints haven’t been showing up in
recent years.
32.What is the purpose of the software?
A.To promote the development of technology.
B.To protect black rhinos from being hunted.
C.To analyze the footprints of illegal poachers.
D.To save endangered species across the world.
33.What’s the advantage of the software?
A.It owns various functions.
B.It goes to the market.
C.It is perfectly practical.
D.It is more than popular.
34.What does Zoe Jewell say about the approach?
A.It brings the best advantage for the lowest cost.
B.It helps increase the population of black rhinos.
C.It raises people's awareness of the environment.
D.It strengthens the tie between humans and nature.
35.Which of the following best describes the future of rhinos?
A.Optimistic. B.Hopeless. C.Worrying. D.Uncertain.

plans, For instance, you might want to tell a handful of friends about your wishes and dreams. 39 You’ll
feel confident in yourself and you’ll be able to go on your new path without any fear.
It’s unavoidable that not everything will be plain sailing, and you’ll find obstacles along your way. 40

Lily was cleaning windows, and it was what she must do for her family's new Chinese restaurant. Everything
had to be absolutely perfect: unique decorations, skillful employees, and delicious traditional food. Then customers
would love the place, making the business a success.
Lily's family had just moved here from San Francisco, having bought a small restaurant, which was opened
yesterday. She was new in the neighbor and had few friends. The first few days at her new school hadn't been easy,
either. She found it hard to talk to people she didn't know and it seemed like the students hadn't even noticed her.
She was eager for a friendship, though.
Lily shifted her vision to look outside the restaurant as a girl about her age, with abundant red hair, walked up
the street. The girl paused to study the sign announcing their opening and then looked directly at Lily with a
friendly smile. Lily smiled back shyly and lifted a hand, accidentally waving with the cleaning cloth. The girl
smiled at her amusement and waved back happily.
Lily hesitated, not accustomed to starting friendship, but she felt courageous, so she opened the door. "Hello,"
she said, adding the first thing that entered her head, “do you like Chinese food?”
“I don't know, but I like to try new things," the girl remarked, and then she introduced herself as Gabriela.
Lily could not think of additional conversation until she had a sudden idea.
