When reading, my mother likes to slice a paragraph or a sentence out and attach it to the wall of her kitchen. She picks
boring sentences that puzzle me. But I prefer copying favorite bright lines into a journal in soft, gray No. 2 pencil, word by
word.
She doesn’t know any of this. There's nothing shocking: for our chatting. we seldom begin certain conversations
though we talk on the phone weekly, sometimes making each other laugh so hard that I choke and she cries. But what we
don't say could fill up rooms. Fights with my father. Small failures in school. Anything that really upsets us.
My mother has never told me “I love you, Lisa.”—as if the four-word absence explains who I am—so I carry it with
me, like a label on me. The last time she almost spoke the words was two years ago, when she called to tell me a friend had
been in hospital. I said, “I love you, Mom.” She stopped for a while and then said, “Thank you.” I haven't said it since, butI've wondered why my mother doesn't until I've found a poem that supplies words for the blank spaces I try to understand in
our conversations:
Don’t fill up on bread. I say absent-mindedly. The servings here are huge.
My son, middle-aged, says: Did you really just say that to me?
What he doesn’t know is that when we’re walking together, I desire to reach for his hand.
It's humble, yet heartbreaking. After copying it down in my journal, I emailed it to mom, adding “This poem makes me
think of you.” My mother doesn’t read poetry—or at least, she doesn’t tell me, and I felt nervous clicking “Send”.
She never mentioned the poem. But the next time I went home for vacation, I noticed something new in the kitchen
fixed to an antique board: the poem. The board hung above the heater, the warmest spot in the kitchen. The poem still hangs
there. Neither my mother nor I have ever spoken about it.
24.What's the function of paragraph 1?
A.To stress the theme. B.To establish the setting.
C.To represent the characters. D.To create the atmosphere.
25.Which of the following best describes the mother daughter relationship?
A.Shaky. B.Distant. C.Reserved. D.Intense.
26.Why did the author send the poem to her mom?
A.It reminded her of mom's love.
B.She wanted to apologize to mom.
C.It suited mom's taste of literature.
D.She needed an interpretation from mom.
27.What does the poem mean to mom?
A.A memory of golden days.
B.Daughter’s gratefulness to her.
C.A decoration in the plain kitchen.
D.Daughter's understanding of her.

Can you imagine getting a tooth pulled out or other major dental procedures without pain-killer? A scientist colleague
of mine used a “focus in” technique instead of requesting pain-killer at the dentist. Each time the dentist touched the tooth,
my colleague felt bubbles of joy, and this lasted until the dentist interrupted by asking, “Why are you smiling?”
A fair question at this point is why anyone would want to be fully aware of intense or painful procedures. But what
may sound like a punishing choice—to directly face hurt or suffering—may in some instances be beneficial. A stream of
scientific articles suggests that there are benefits in turning toward discomfort or negative emotions with acceptance. In
addition, all of us can gain from finding ways to cope with stress and suffering—particularly when larger circumstances are
beyond our control. As a researcher who has studied meditation (冥想) for more than 20 years, I believe that the
development of calmness, a central element of certain mindfulness meditation practices, can help. I’m not advocating for
people to put themselves in dangerous or painful positions. But when we push ourselves into challenging or confusing
situations, much like trainers who push athletes just past their comfort zone to make gains, learning often happens. Indeed, a
2022 study with more than 2,000 people demonstrated that those participants who were publicly encouraged to push
themselves into awkward, uncomfortable situations—including taking classes to boost self-confidence and reading about
opposing viewpoints—later reported the greatest degree of personal growth.
My own research indicates that meditation provides an ideal way to practice turning toward discomfort-particularlywhen it trains up one’s calm mind. People who reported higher levels of calmness reported less psychological distress (困
扰).
Right now people are hurting for many reasons and looking for ways to cope. Without question, there are many
important steps we need to take collectively to respond to these challenges. But we can each build our ability to recover on a
personal level as well by cultivating greater acceptance of our experience—good or bad, painful or pleasant—in the present
moment.
28.The author uses the first question in Paragraph 1 to________.
A.introduce the topic.
B.illustrate an argument.
C.highlight an opinion.
D.promote a pain-killer.
29.What is the benefit of turning towards discomfort and negative emotions?
A.It helps in avoiding suffering fully.
B.It increases psychological distress.
C.It leads to personal growth.
D.It promotes a sense of calmness.
30.What is the author’s view on putting oneself in dangerous or painful positions?
A.The author encourages it as a way to improve fitness.
B.The author discourages it due to its potential harm.
C.The author believes it is necessary for personal growth.
D.The author recommends it to those confused trainers.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Turning Towards Discomfort: My Experience of Staying Stressful and Successful
B.Expanding Comfort Zones: The Difference Between Discomfort and Calmness
C.Mindfulness and Meditation: The Tools for Dealing with Stress and Suffering
D.Cultivating Calmness: The Benefits of Mindfulness in Enjoying Dental Operation

“Few articles change owners more frequently than clothes. They travel downwards from grade to grade in the social
scale with remarkable regularity,” wrote the journalist Adolphe Smith in 1877 as he traced a coat’s journey in the last
century: cleaned, repaired and resold repeatedly; cut down into a smaller item; eventually recycled into new fabric. But with
the improvement in people’s living standards, that model is mind-boggling in the era of fast fashion. The average British
customer buys four items a month. And it is reported that 350,000 tonnes of used but still wearable clothes go to landfills in
the UK each year.
Yet the gradual revival of the second-hand trade has gathered pace in the past few years. At fashion website Asos, sales
of vintage clothes (古董衫) have risen by 92%. Clothing was once worn out of necessity, and now it is simply a way of life.
Busy families sell used items on eBay, teenagers trade on Depop and some fashion people offer designer labels on Vestiaire
Collective. Strikingly, it has become big enough business that mainstream retailers (零售商) want a slice of the action.
For some buyers and sellers, the switch to the second-hand is born of financial difficulties. Only a few have become
worried about the impact of their shopping habit on the planet. But the shift is only a partial solution. Some people worry
that some mainstream brands may “greenwash” — using second-hand goods to improve their image, rather than engaging
more seriously with sustainability. However, the biggest concern may be that people keep buying because they know they can resell goods, still chasing
the pleasure of the next purchase but with an eased conscience (愧疚). Boohoo, a powerful fast fashion company, has seen
sales and profits rise, despite concerns about environmental problems in its supply chain that led to an investigation last
year.
A new Netflix series, Worn Stories, documents the emotional meanings that clothes can have: Each old item is full of
memories. Actually, a handbag from a grandmother and a scarf passed on by a father are both valuable for us. A love of
style is not a bad or an unimportant thing. But a committed relationship is better than a quick flash. Can we learn to
appreciate our own old clothes as well as others’?
32.What does the word “mind-boggling” underlined in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Unbelievable. B.Popular. C.Reasonable. D.Influential.
33.With the business mentioned in paragraph 2, the author wants to show _______.
A.old clothes are more popular than new pieces
B.the online second-hand markets are booming
C.the fashion world begins to favor vintage clothes
D.many clothing brands are innovative in their new products
34.How does the second-hand trade impact people according to paragraph 4?
A.It makes people feel free to pursue fast fashion.
B.It makes people more cautious about their budgets.
C.It encourages people to choose eco-friendly clothes.
D.It pushes people to be more engaged with sustainability.
35.Which of the following views does Worn Stories advocate?
A.Old items have lost favor with the public.
B.Old items are worthy of being long cherished.
C.Older generations attach great importance to old items.
D.Older generations care about the quality of their clothes.

How to master tricky conversations at work
Many of us struggle to say what we need to at work. Whether it’s asking for a pay rise or facing a co-worker over their
behaviour, these conversations can be difficult to have without the other person getting angry. 36 . Here’s my tips
on how to tackle your next difficult conversation.
Plan
First, you need to plan what you’re going to say. 37 . Write down what you want out of the conversation and
be clear on what you want to happen as a result. For example, you may decide: “I want to get an agreement on deadlines for
this project and a clear outline of who will be responsible for each task.”
Prepare
The second thing you need to do is write down the key messages you want to get across in the conversation. 38
. Remember to speak slowly, breathe. If you are particularly nervous, rehearse (排练) what you plan to say in front of a
friend so you know you are coming across as you wish to.
Be empathetic
Finally, put yourself in the other person’s shoes — however annoying that person might be. The useless boss whonever gives you feedback is simply struggling with her own workload. 39 , the more we can plan how to work
with them towards a successful outcome.
When you have the conversation, don’t get blind-sided by fast talkers. If the person you’re speaking to starts to avoid
blame or your questioning, ask them what their part is in all of this and what they can take responsibility for. 40 .
And finally, if you feel under pressure, remember to respond slowly rather than reacting quickly.
A.Practise saying them out loud
B.Start with the end result in mind
C.The language you use is also important
D.The more careful you’re with the language you use
E.The more we can understand the other person’s worldview
F.To manage your emotions during a difficult conversation, breathe deeply
G.But not being able to have “that conversation” can hold you back in your career

When our youngest sister was born, my little brother Tom was six and I was eight. I had always been the “Big Sister”
and he had always been “The Baby”.
Our sister’s arrival was a complete surprise to both of us. In those days no one worried much about sibling rivalry (兄
弟姐妹间的较劲), and no “experts” told us how to deal with another child in the house. We had wise and loving grandpa
and mom, however.I was excited about the baby and loved to hold her and help care for her. Tom’s feelings were quite different! He just
looked at her and left, preferring to spend the evening in his room. When I went to his room to talk to him and try to get him
to play games with me, he just looked away. “Why did they have to get that baby?” Tom asked.
Later that night, Grandpa came over to see the new baby. As he held her, he said to Tom, “You know, she’s a lot like
the baby lamb I’m raising on the bottle. I have to take care of her and feed her often, just the way your mom does with the
baby.” Tom said, “I’d rather have the lamb.”
Grandpa heard and said, “Well, if you’d rather have a lamb, maybe we could trade your little sister for it. I’ll give you a
day to think it over, and if you still want to trade tomorrow, we’ll do it.” I thought I saw him wink at Mom, but I knew I
must have been mistaken because Grandpa never winked at anyone.
After Grandpa left, Mom read to Tom for a long while. Tom kept looking at the baby, and Mom asked him to hold our
little sister while she went to the bathroom. When Mom came back. Tom was gently touching the baby’s smooth black hair,
and as he held her hand, she took hold of his finger.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
