“He is a giant of the 20th-century art, but that doesn’t mean he only did big paintings, said Lynn Miller, director of
Rochester Central Gallery, in an interview last Thursday.
Entitled “Picasso and His Drafts”, a special exhibit marking 50 years since the death of Pablo Picasso is held at
the gallery this month. Instead of his paintings, the notebooks on which the Spanish legendary artist drew drafts are
shown to the public for the first time.
Matchbox covers, postcards, restaurant napkins all served as drafting notes for the artist at moments of inspiration.
It is important to know that each of the 14 notebooks presented reflects what was going on in his life.
For example, a tiny notebook whose size is just 3 by 5 inches stands out among the exhibits. Inside the little
book was a self-portrait of the artist finished roughly in pencil, with deep and thoughtful eyes. It was done in 1918
and Picasso, then in his mid-30s, had just got married. He produced big-sized artworks but he also kept this tiny
notebook around, filling it with scenes of his wife, their friends, the beach and the town, and drafts of upcoming
paintings. Actually, many of the draft drawings are early versions of famed paintings like Les Demoiselles d’Avignon
(1907) and Dora Maar in an Armchair (1939).
”He is a great artist of the modern period, and we see practice and determination in his notebooks, said Lynn
Miller, referring to Picasso’s efforts in improving his skills through copious drawing. Bernard Ruiz-Picasso, a
grandson of Picasso’s, remembered him always drafting until the last piece of paper available. “My grandpa was
permanently drawing something, Ruiz-Picasso said.
In a documentary film shown at the gallery, Picasso, shirtless and in shorts, was standing on a ladder to reach
the top of his canvas (画布). It reminds visitors of the real size of his masterworks.
24.What are the key features of the recent exhibit at the gallery?
A.Notebooks for sale. B.Picasso’s artworks.C.Priceless artistic drafts. D.Masterpieces of the 20th century.
25.What is reflected in the notebooks of Picasso?
A.His life experience. B.The love for his country.
C.The content of his books. D.His education background.
26.Which of the following best describes Picasso according to his grandson?
A.Creative. B.Diligent. C.Optimistic. D.Humorous.
27.What can we learn from the author’s words in the last paragraph?
A.Picasso used to mind his appearance. B.The gallery exhibits real masterworks.
C.The documentary movie is worth seeing. D.Picasso’s artworks are actually of great size.

Have you ever seen your cat or dog eating grass? They do so because it can help their digestion, and many wild
species use natural substances to prevent and control diseases. This is called “zoo pharmacognosy” or, more commonly,
animal self-medication.
Scientists have discovered that tamarin monkeys use a specific tree resin (树脂) as medicine. In the Brazilian
Atlantic Forest, scientists followed several groups of them to collect data. During one of these daily studies, tamarin
monkeys were observed rubbing their bodies on the trunk of a tree. At first, researchers thought that they were
marking their territory, a common behaviour in this species. Botanical experts later confirmed that the tree was a
species of cabreuva, which is well known for its medical properties.
Researchers decided to place camera-traps in different sites at the foot of the tree to record future visits by
tamarin monkeys. The records surprisingly showed that many animals living in the forest visited it. Totally, ten species
were observed. For many of them, it was the first time that behaviors similar to self-medication had been observed.
More surprisingly, one species spread resin on each other’s fur in pairs. In general, the species seemed to specifically
visit the tree to acquire the resin and seemingly benefit from it, either healing their wounds or fighting back
parasites (寄生虫).
While further studies are needed to identify the properties of the resin and thus confirm that this is indeed self-
medication, the use of it suggests that cabreuva represents a common and universal drugstore for the residents of the
Brazilian Atlantic Forest. It is likely to be a valuable resource helping the species maintain their magnitude by
improving their health.
This discovery could have an important protection influence, as the disappearance of some trees could potentially
affect the survival of some animals.
28.Why do tamarin monkeys rub themselves against the tree?
A.They are trying to cure diseases. B.They would like to digest what they eat.C.They feel like occupying the land. D.They are attracting companions’ attention.
29.What do researchers find through camera-traps?
A.Many animals copy monkeys’ behaviors.B.Animals can help each other clean the fur.
C.The cabreduva is the habitat of tamarin monkeys. D.Resin can be used as medicine for some animals
30.What does the underlined word “magnitude” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Populations. B.Characteristics. C.Similarities. D.Flexibilities.
31.What is the possible significance of the discovery?
A.Promoting evolution of creatures. B.Increasing the production of resin.
C.Contributing to forest conservation. D.Motivating the study of monkeys’ diet.

In the 1970s, a psychologist named J.P.Guilford dared to conduct a famous study of creativity—the nine-dot
puzzle. He challenged research subjects to connect all nine dots using just four straight lines without lifting their
pencils from the page.
All the participants in his study limited the possible solutions to those within the imaginary square. Only 20
percent managed to break out of the illusory confinement (束缚) and continue their lines in the white space surrounding
the dots. The fact that 80 percent of the participants were effectively blinded by the boundaries of the square led
Guilford to jump to the sweeping conclusion that creativity requires you to go outside the box.
The nine-dot puzzle and the phrase “thinking outside the box” became metaphors for creativity. Speakers,
trainers, training program developers, organizational consultants, and university professors all had much to say about
the vast benefits of outside-the-box thinking. Management consultants even used this puzzle when making sales talk
to prospective clients. Because the solution is deceptively simple, clients tended to admit they should have thought
of it themselves. Because they hadn’t, they were obviously not as creative or smart as they had previously thought
and needed to call in creative experts.
The smash hit carried the world before one until two different research teams-Clarke Burnham with Kenneth
Davis, and Joscph Alba with Robert Weinberg—ran another experiment, using the same puzzle but a different research
procedure and bothered to check the facts.
Both teams followed the same way of dividing participants into two groups. The first group was given the same
instructions as the participants in Guilford’s experiment. The second group was told that the solution required the
lines to be drawn outside the imaginary box bordering the dots. Most people assume that 60 percent to 90 percent of
the group given the clue would solve the puzzle easily. However only 25 percent did. In statistical terms, this 5 percent
improvement over the subjects of Guilford’s original study is insignificant.
Solving this problem requires people to literally think outside the box. Yet participants’ performance was notimproved even when they were given specific instructions to do so. That this advice is useless should effectively have
killed off the much widely circulated—and therefore, much more dangerous—metaphor that out-of-the-box thinking
stimulates receptivity. After all, with one simple experiment, researchers had proven that the conceptual link between
thinking outside the box and creativity was a myth.
32.What did the nine-dot puzzle study focus on?
A.Visual perception
B.Practical experience
C.Thinking patterns
D.Theoretical knowledge.
33.What can be inferred from paragraph 3?
A.The clients were less creative than they had been.
B.The nine-dot puzzle was beneficial in solving various problems.
C.Outside-the-box thinking enjoyed strong popularity and appeal.
D.Management consultants considered themselves creative experts.
34.Which of the following best describes the follow-up experiment?
A.Revealing
B.Mysterious.
C.Misleading.
D.Groundless.
35.Which is the best title for the passage?
A.Nine-Dot Puzzle:A Magic Test
B.Solving Puzzle:A Key To Creativity
C.Creative Thinking:We Fell For The Trap
D.Thinking Outside the Box:A Misguided Idea

Benefits of Personality Tests
Can identifying one’s personality type using the MBTI and other personality assessments really help? They
may. 36
Better understand others
After taking a personality test and seeing our results, we can gain a better understanding of all the differentperceptions and reactions that others might have to the same situation. 37 . No personality type is “better”
than any other — just different. Each perspective brings something new and interesting to the table.
Identify our likes and dislikes
Maybe we’ve always hated talking on the phone but never really understood why. 38 . By using
personality tests like the MBTI, we can learn more about where we lie on the extroversion/introversion and
thinking/feeling continuum (连续性). This helps us better understand why we prefer certain things and dislike
others.
39 .
Learning more about our personality type can also help us discover new ways to approach challenges. Knowing
what might work best for our personality type can give us new ideas on how to solve problems, deal with stress, cope
with conflict, and manage our work habits.
Recognize our strengths and weaknesses
Knowing what we are good at can be important in a wide variety of situations, whether we are picking a college
major or thinking about running for a seat on our local school board. For example, if we know that we are an ISTJ
(introverted, sensing, thinking, and judging) on the MBTI, we might recognize that certain aspects of our personality
might qualify as strengths in some situations and weaknesses in others. 40 , it can sometimes trip us up in
situations where we need to let other people take control.
A.Hold on to ideas about who we are
B.Know which situations are ideal for us
C.Here’s an overview of the many benefits of personality tests
D.While they reveal truth that showcases different aspects of personality
E.While our organizational skills and carefulness can be a major strength in our work
F.This is important because we all have different ways of seeing and interacting with the world
G.Or perhaps we’ve always needed much time to think about a problem before making a decision

When I was in Primary Five, I was in the basketball school team. Every month we would have a basketball
match against another school’s basketball team. In spite of all the cheers we received from our classmates and the
amount of training we had, we had never won a single match before. That was due to our lack of teamwork andcooperation.
During one of our training sessions, our school team was divided into two to have a match against each other.
The inter-school competition was coming up and none of us wanted to miss our chance of getting that gold trophy(奖品).
“Three, two, one, start!” our basketball coach, Coach Leong, shouted. John, who was in my team, managed to grab
the ball that Coach Leong threw in the air. Since John grabbed the ball, he refused to let anyone, not even his
teammates, take it.
“Pass the ball to me, John!” I shouted. I was in a good position to shoot the ball into the hoop(篮筺). To my
shock, John made a rude face at me. I made an attempt to grab the ball from him. When I got my hands on the ball,
it became a tug-of-war(激烈竞争) between John and me. Coach Leong shook his head and exploded like an active
volcano. “Children! Is this the type of behavior that I should be seeing? The match is in two weeks! Do you even
know the importance of teamwork?” Coach Leong gave us a disappointed look. It seemed as if he had some sad news
to tell us.
I was right.
Coach Leong explained that he would be retiring after the match. “I hope you can show me your teamwork and
cooperate with one another in this match before I retire.” I choked on my tears. My heart sank. We were giving Coach
Leong such a tough time, when all he wanted was for us to show teamwork in the match. After that day, my teammates
and I were determined to do our best and work as a team.
