What’s in it for you? We believe that being a buddy will be rewarding in several ways. As a volunteer, it will be personally satisfying to know that you are able to help new students. It will also help you make contacts that may be valuable in your future academic and professional lives. If you are an overseas student, it will give you another opportunity to practise speaking English. Responsibilities of buddies • Telephone and arrange to make contact with the new student. • Meet the student and show him/her around the campus and the local area Answer questions about living in Newcastle and administration procedures at IBI. • Arrange to meet the new student on morning or afternoon one weekend early in the semester, and take the student to places that you enjoy in Newcastle. • Be prepared to take phone call from the new student to answer further questions that he/she may have from time to time. Meet to explain information to the new student in person, if required. • You will be matched to an individual new student. However, if you have friends who are also buddies, you might prefer to form a support group together. This would mean that you meet the new students as a group rather than one-on-one. • Being a buddy is voluntary. There is no “requirement” to provide assistance beyond the help outlined above. C (2023·江苏苏州·统考模拟预测)Rush up the stairs. Play games with your kids. Increasing the vigor (活力) of our daily activities could have a huge impact on our long life, according to a new study of movement intensity and death rate. The study finds that as few as three minutes a day of vigorous everyday activity is linked to a 40 percent lower risk of early death in adults, even when they do not exercise at all. “It is fantastic” research, said Ulrik Wisloff, the director of the K.G. Jebsen Center for Exercise in Medicine at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. The study’s results join rising scientific evidence that adding a little intensity to our lives pays big dividends for our health, without requiring extra equipment, instruction, gym memberships or time. The idea that how we move influences how long we live is hardly new. Plenty of research links regular exercise with longevity (长 寿),including the formal public health exercise guidelines, which recommend at least 150 minutes a week of moderate (适度的) exercise for health and longevity. More-focused research, though, suggests intensifying some of our exercise increases the health benefits. In a 2006 study from Wisloff’s lab, for instance, just 30 minutes a week of intense exercise dropped the risk of dying from heart disease by about half in men and women, compared to people who were sitting long. Similarly, a study published last year in JAMA Internal Medicine concluded that people who occasionally pushed themselves during exercise were about 17 percent less likely to die early than people who did the same amount of exercise, but at a gentler, mild pace. Both of these studies, though, were based on people’s recall of how much and how hard they exercised. They also were exercise studies, making them of interest mostly to people who exercise or would like to, which does not represent the greater part of humanity. “If we’re honest, most people are allergic(过敏) to the word ‘exercise,’” said Emmanuel Stamatakis, a professor of physical activity and health studies at the University of Sydney, who led the new study. 28.What is the main finding of the new study? A.There’s a connection between exercise intensity and long life. B.Increasing the intensity of daily activity may affect our life. C.Vigorous everyday activity is better than moderate exercise. D.The way people choose to exercise determines people’s health. 29.What does the underlined phrase “pays big dividends for” mean in paragraph 3? A.Brings great benefits to. B.Causes serious harm to. C.Takes off the pressure from. D.Raises big money for. 30.Why does the author mention the study from Wisloff’s lab in paragraph4? A.To explain the right amount of exercise improves health. B.To show energetic exercise raises heart rates and breathing. C.To prove adding some intensity to exercise brings more benefits. D.To demonstrate exercise in a gentler way benefits people more. 31.What can we infer from the last paragraph? A.People’s subjective recall is reliable. B.Most people like exercise to a certain degree. C.The new study involves a great majority of people. D.The new study has some limitations as previous ones. D (2023·江苏盐城·统考三模)Both humans and animals possess the ability to cry out for help when endangered or threatened. Plants, as it turns out, can too. “We found that plants usually emit (发出) sounds when they are under stress and that each plant and each type of stress is associated with a specific identifiable sound,” researchers from Tel Aviv University in Israel wrote in their findings, published in the scientific journal Cell. “While undetectable to the human ear, the sounds emitted by plants can probably be heard by various animals, such as bats, mice, and insects.” Stressors like dehydration (脱水) and damage to leaves gave rise to the plants’ high-pitched (尖声的) cries, which ranged from 20 to 250 kHz. The bigger the danger, the more frequent a plant’s signals. “Unstressed plants emitted less than one sound per hour, on average,” researcher Lilach Hadany said, “while the stressed plants — both dehydrated and injured — emitted dozens of sounds every hour.” To catch these sounds, Hadany’s team surrounded tomato and tobacco plants with super-sensitive microphones. They then fed the data into an artificial intelligence program that could tell the difference between the species of plant and the types of sounds produced.“Our findings suggest that the world around us is full of plant sounds, and that these sounds contain information,” Hadany wrote. She added that to translate that information, we just need the “right tools such as sensors that tell growers when plants need watering.” Doing so, researchers noted, may allow farmers to judge exactly when and where to water crops. Saving water, increasing harvests, and lowering stress for both plant and humankind. 32.What did researchers from Tel Aviv University in Israel find? A.Creatures tend to cry out for help when in danger. B.Plants can give off sounds when they are stressed. C.Plant sounds can be heard by both animals and humans. D.Plants make the same sound whatever type of stress they have. 33.What does the author want to show in paragraph 3? A.The influence of stress on plants. B.The urgency of relieving stress of plants. C.The possibility of plants emitting sounds. D.The importance of conducting the research. 34.Why was an artificial intelligence program used in the research? A.To help get rid of plant stress. B.To identify the types of stress. C.To collect sounds emitted by plants. D.To analyze the collected sounds of plants. 35.What can we learn from Hadany’s words in the last paragraph? A.The research is of practical value. B.It’s difficult to understand plant sounds. C.Further research is needed in the future. D.It’s as easy as pie for farmers to grow crops. 第二节(共5小题:每小题2. 5分, 满分12. 5分) 阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 (2023·江苏南通·统考二模)Lifelong learning and the Future of Work: Challenges and Opportunities Our world is undergoing dramatic and transformative change technological, organizational, and climatic presenting new challenges to the future of work. It argues that psychologists should investigate not only mental illness but also 57 makes life worth living. The founding father of positive psychology, Martin Seligman, describes happiness as experiencing frequent positive emotions, such as joy, excitement and satisfaction, 58 (combine) with deeper feelings of meaning and purpose. It implies a positive attitude in the present and an optimistic outlook for the future. Importantly, happiness experts have argued that happiness is not a stable, 59 (change) feature but something flexible 60 we can work on and ultimately strive towards. Recent research indicates that psychological 61 (flexible) is the key to greater happiness and well- being. For example, 62 (be) open to emotional experiences and the ability to tolerate periods of discomfort can allow us to move towards a richer, more meaningful existence. Studies have also demonstrated that the way we respond to the circumstances of our lives has 63 (influence) on our happiness than the events 64 (they). Experiencing stress, sadness and anxiety in the short term doesn’t mean we can’t be happy in the long term. Often when people have faced difficulty, illness or loss, they describe their lives as happier and more meaningful as a result. 65 feeling happy, which is a temporary state, leading a happier life is about individual growth by finding meaning through the whole life. It is about accepting our humanity with all its ups and downs, enjoying the positive emotions, and making use of painful feelings in order to reach our full potential. Notice ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ Students’ Union 第二节(满分25分) (2023·江苏南通·统考三模)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整 的短文。 It was Christmas Eve morning, and I awoke with a mission: to find my lost cat, Baby-Girl. As I got ready, I could hear icy rain pelting the windows. Baby-Girl was out there somewhere in the storm; I could just feel it. Sure, it had been a couple of weeks since she’d gone missing, but I still had faith. This was the season for miracles, after all. About two weeks ago, my sweet kitty disappeared from my parents’ house in my hometown. Baby-Gil had been staying with them while I was between apartments. At the time, I lived and worked in another city. I was staying with frends until I rented my own house. Baby-Girl had gotten out of my parents’ house the day before I was set to drive back home to pick her up. My dad and I had spent that entire visit searching for her. Dad was a “realist”, which meant he spent a whole lot of time trying to prepare me for the worst. “She’s either been hit by a car or been taken in by someone who found her,” he said. I rolled my eyes. He could do with a little more faith! Besides, though I couldn’t explain it, I knew I’d see Baby-Girl again. She could survive all on her own. If any cat could do the impossible, it was my Baby-Girl. Even after I returned to my house without her, deep down I had this undeniable feeling that we would be reunited one day. Now, home again for the holidays, I was determined to pick up my search right where I’d left off. I grabbed Baby-Girl’s cat carrier and loaded it into the car, and then asked my dad to drive me to the shelter. At the shelter, a staff member took us to see the cats. We walked through rows of cages. My eyes scanned cats of all colors and sizes. None of them was my Baby-Girl. Then I noticed a room farther back. I pushed ahead. “Sweetheart, that’s where they keep the cats that just came in,” Dad said. “Your cat wouldn’t be in there.” 注意:1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 I insisted it didn’t hurt to look and stepped into the room.____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________ Sensing their doubts, I was ready to prove she was my cat. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________
