Passage2
“How beautiful the jasmine (茉莉花) is! A sweet smell covers the budding twigs. So fragrant, so
white, admired by all lips.” The famed Chinese folk song Jasmine Flower has reached a global audience
with its beautiful melody and lyrics. Equally popular is the traditionally made Jasmine tea, whose elegant
fragrance and mellow taste fascinate countless tea drinkers.
Chen Chengzhong has a big say in the production of Jasmine tea as he is a practitioner of Fuzhou
Jasmine tea scenting techniques. The 72-year-old tea maker started his career early in his teenage years,
when he became an apprentice in a state-owned tea factory.
Jasmine tea is a kind of tea scented (带有某种香味) with the fragrance of jasmine blossoms and
typically has green tea as its base. The natural scenting process consumes fresh jasmine blossoms, picked
during the daytime when the buds are closed, Chen said. And the green tea leaves from the spring harvest
are stored until the most fragrant jasmine blossoms in late summer.
The hot and humid climate and the red soil in East China’s Fujian province provide favorable
conditions for jasmine and tea plants to thrive, becoming the high-quality ingredients that are needed for
Jasmine tea. “Our jasmine flowers and tea leaves are all sourced from Fujian in large quantities, despite the
fact that they are pricier than those from other origins,” Chen said.
When the fresh jasmine flowers are harvested, they are mixed with layers of tea leaves. Workers stir
(搅拌) the tea leaves and flowers overnight, allowing the leaves to absorb the fragrant scent of the jasmine
blossoms.
In the morning, the flowers are sorted, the leaves are dried, and the process is repeated. Morerepetition makes for a more robust jasmine flavor, and it takes at least nine scenting processes to produce
Jasmine tea of a superb grade.
Having been appointed as the representative practitioner of Fuzhou Jasmine tea scenting techniques,
Chen now focuses more on passing on the scenting techniques, giving lectures to students and apprentices.
Chen’s son Chen Zheng is motivated to follow in his father’s footsteps and move forward with the scenting
techniques. “Like my father, I also hope to practice this traditional skill that has profound cultural deposits,
and pass it on,” Chen Zheng said.
4.What is the author’s purpose of quoting the song Jasmine Flower?
A.To tell us not to neglect the song.
B.To show the popularity of the song.
C.To introduce the topic—Jasmine tea.
D.To clarify the origin of Jasmine tea.
5.Why are Fujian’s jasmines and tea leaves the high-quality ingredients?
A.Because their fragrances are mixed together.
B.Because Fujian is rich in jasmines and tea leaves.
C.Because they are pricier than those from other areas.
D.Because Fujian has suitable climate and soil conditions.
6.Which of the following is RIGHT about the process of making Jasmine tea?
A.It uses the most fragrant jasmine blossoming in early summer.
B.It takes at most nine scenting processes to produce Jasmine tea of a superb grade.
C.Tea leaves should be mixed with fresh jasmine flowers to absorb their fragrance.
D.Fresh jasmine blossoms are picked during the daytime when the buds are opened.
7.What does Chen Zheng want to do?
A.Produce Jasmine tea of a superb grade.
B.Practice and pass on Jasmine tea scenting techniques.
C.Give lectures to students and apprentices.
D.Become an apprentice in a state-owned tea factory.
Passage3
Chemically, there are many different alcohols. All of them are poisons for almost all living things.
After a person swallows a drink containing alcohol, the alcohol is absorbed rapidly into the bloodstream. Itis then slowly removed and burned up, changing entirely in the process to carbon dioxide and water, mostly
by action of the liver. The effects of alcohol on the body come from its effect on the brain. And they depend
upon the amount of alcohol that builds up in the bloodstream.
As with many other poisons, a small amount of alcohol has some special effects. In small amounts it
acts as a stimulant. People who are “uptight” — tense and nervous — are apt to become more relaxed and
talkative, and seem to lose their worries. For this reason, some people drink a little alcohol after a hard
day’s work.
The trouble with alcohol begins with just a little more just — a slightly higher amount — in the
bloodstream. Then it becomes a depressant. Depressants make people slower at thinking and slower at
moving. But people are apt to think they are smarter and faster. That’s bad. You can easily understand why
they should not be driving a car.
There’s another part about drinking too much alcohol, which is even worse. People are likely to lose
self-control. Then they are likely to drink even more. Those who are drunk are not very nice to be around
and can be dangerous— to themselves and others.
Some people are compulsive drinkers. Even a small amount of alcohol “sets them off,” and they keep
on drinking. These people are called alcoholics. The American Medical Association says they have the
disease of alcoholism.
So far, no one has found a cure. The only treatment for an alcoholic is to never take a drink of alcohol-
not even a little bit. That may sound simple, but for an alcoholic it’s not.
8.Which part of body does alcohol have the most effects on?
A.The bloodstream. B.The heart.
C.The brain. D.The liver.
9.Why do people like to drink alcohol after a day’s work?
A.To relax themselves. B.To make them smarter.
C.To have a good sleep. D.To become braver.
10.What does the author’s suggestion to alcoholics?
A.Drink n little bit each day. B.Cut down on the amount.
C.Never drive after drinking. D.Stop drinking completely.
11.What is the text mainly about?
A.The benefits of alcohol drinking. B.The effects of alcohol on people
C.The treatments on alcoholism. D.The causes of getting drunk.Passage4
FaceApp has taken the world by storm, giving users the chance to see themselves age through its
algorithm. 12.7 million people—some three million more than the population of New York City—
reportedly downloaded it in a week last month.
Although the Russian app has become known for its privacy issues, the more interesting lesson of our
FaceApp fling (尽情玩乐) is what it tells us about our society—and our future lives. It turns out we are
more interested in aging than we realized. Most younger people are in denial about old age, doing almost
nothing to prepare for it. We rarely have a chance to plan for the future, with increasing time and financial
pressures. Those pressures bring sacrifices we may not always want to make: we can no longer afford to
spend the time or the money needed to look after our elderly parents.
As a family doctor, I can see the loneliness epidemic developing. Elderly patients come to see me with
no particular illness, no clear medical issue. After a few minutes of the consultation I understand why: they
are not sick, and often they don’t feel sick. They just need someone—anyone—to talk to.
Although loneliness has no medical classification, the health effects are real: loneliness and isolation
can be as harmful as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, and is more damaging than obesity. But loneliness does
not come with nearly enough health warnings.
So what next? Since 1980, we are living on average 10 years longer. Meanwhile, people are having
fewer children, and they are having them much later in life. The snake of a world class health service is
eating its own tail; its care is prolonging (延长) people’s lives, but as the rate of pensioners (退休人员) to
working age people increases, there are fewer taxpayers ta fund that very health service.
Into this void have stepped NGOs, charities and volunteers. But in the long term, the only way to truly
help the oldest members of our society is to go back to the traditional values of inter-generational
cooperation—often under the same roof. Ultimately, we will need to evolve towards a culture where elderly
care IS treated the same as childcare, where employers recognize the duty of someone with an elderly
parent the same way they recognize those of someone with a newborn child.
12.What’s the writer’s intention of mentioning FaceApp in the first two paragraphs?
A.To explain its function in detail. B.To prove its popularity across the world.
C.To show the rapid progress of technology. D.To introduce the topic of aging and loneliness.
13.What makes elderly people without illness go to see their family doctors?
A.Desire to have the consultation. B.Unclear medical issues.C.Strong feeling of loneliness. D.Questions to ask doctors.
14.How can the oldest members of our society be truly helped?
A.By being provided with family care. B.By going back to the traditional society
C.By being treated like children. D.By recognizing the duty of employers
15.What can we learn from the passage?
A.FaceApp is helpful in dealing with elderly people’s loneliness.
B.FaceApp’s popularity proves it has no security problems.
C.The loneliness of elderly people needs more attention
D.Health service lacks fund because of prolonged people’s lives.
Passage5
Tips on Preventing a Sports-Related Injury
Playing sports is a great way to exercise, and that doesn’t have to stop once you’re an adult.
____16____ But when we’re active, we also increase the chance of getting injuries.
These injuries are painful and often require missing games and practices to give your body the proper
rest and care needed to recover. Unfortunately, a previous injury is one of the most significant predictors of
a future injury. ____17____
Here are some injury prevention tips:
____18____ Talk with your doctor about any past sports injuries during your next checkup or before
the next season starts. Your doctor can recommend corrective exercises to help you be more resistant to a
future injury.
Be aware of the environment and field conditions. Environment doesn’t just mean the weather,
although that is important, but also how safely teammates and the opponents are playing. ____19____ Ice
or wet spots or holes can set the stage for a fall and result in an injury.
Watch for athletic sportsmanship. When athletes don’t play by the rules or play too aggressively, an
injury is more likely to occur. Watch to ensure officials and members of the other team demonstrate a good
understanding of fair play.
Recognize an injury. Despite our best efforts, an injury can happen. ____20____ Take yourself out of
the game and have the injury assessed so it doesn’t get worse. Before going back into the game, give
yourself time to heal completely and develop a strategy to prevent the injury from happening again.
By taking these smart steps to avoid (and if necessary, address) injuries, you can set the stage for alife-long, healthy love of sports.
A.Assess potential injuries.
B.Arrange for an athletic screening.
C.Sporting activities may result in any type of injury.
D.Sports is an ideal way to socialize and maintain fitness.
E.Also, check out the field or court where you’re playing.
F.If it does, it’s very important to address it immediately.
G.That’s why injury prevention—not just treatment or recovery—-is key.
