Tucker stood by the back door, his eyes fixed on the winter sky: crystal blue and not a single cloud. His breath
made steamy circles on the chilled glass window. “I don’t think today’s the day, Tucker.” His father walked up
beside him and looked outside. “It has to snow something, doesn’t it, Dad?” asked Tucker, a hint of regret in his
voice as he surveyed the barren landscape. “Sure, boy,” his father stroked his fingers through Tucker’s hair and
strode off toward the basement door.
Tucker’s gaze wandered beyond the backyard of his family’s new home. Just beyond a cluster of prickly
pine trees, the flat ground pushed upward into a steep and empty hillside. Dad’s promise of a perfect sledding (乘雪
橇) spot echoed in his ears, painting vivid pictures of exhilarating rides down the hill, faster and more thrilling than
anything he’d experienced in the city.
Sledding. Tucker’s brand- new sled rested in the corner of his room, sandwiched between his dresser (梳妆
台) and train table. It was perfect: bright blue with red and orange flames racing up its sides. Tucker loved the feel
of the cool, smooth plastic yellow rope. He was sure it would be superfast. If only it would snow.
Determined to find some way to make the most of this snowless day, Tucker went down to the basement
where he found his father waist- deep in a sea of flattened cardboard boxes. “Can you play chess with me, Dad?”Tucker pleaded. His father looked over the wall of boxes. “I promised your mom I’d get all these boxes broken
down and ready for recycling. It won’t take long, Tucker. In a little while, we’ll find something fun to do, I
promise.” But Tucker’s eyes had already lit up with a new found idea. As he caught sight of the duct tape (强力防
水胶带) next to his father and the ramp (斜坡) formed by the cardboard boxes by accident, inspiration struck.

It was the second day in the new office and Maya was still on her own. Except the man who had taken her
induction (入职), there was no one else who had said a “hi” to the young woman.
Not only was it a new office, it was also a new city. While she had successfully climbed the corporate ladder
(阶梯) for a better salary, she hadn’t really made any friends in the new city or office yet. Looking at the whole
workplace from her seat at the end of the hall, Maya felt an urge to cry. But she was a grown woman and that was
simply not an option.
She decided to eat her lunch, as lonely as it might feel. Her lunch box revealed fried rice with vegetables and
an old memory hit her from the depth of her mind.
It was fifteen years ago and their sports period had just been canceled. The children had brought some snacks
from the school canteen to the classroom and were chewing noisily. The class teacher came in with a young girl.
“This is Tina, new to Delhi and your school. Make her feel welcome, you all,” she said.
While the students said a big “hi” to her in chorus, that was all they did. Tina was seated right next to Maya,
something the latter (后者) didn’t like. So, she turned to Tina and said, “My best friend sits next to me. You have
been given this seat because she is absent today. Once she is back, you have to find yourself a new seat, OK?” Tina
sadly nodded her head, but Maya didn’t care. As the popular girl in class, Maya had a lot going for her—she had
many friends, the teachers loved her and she was the queen of debating. So, she hardly spoke to the new girl whosat next to her for a whole week.

When I was a child, my mother told my sister, who had a 10-inch very obvious scar (伤疤) on her arm,
“Nancy, if you ignore the scar, other people will ignore it. It does not mean they will not notice it, but it means it
will not matter to them if it doesn’t matter to you.”
It never occurred to me that something like this would happen to my son years later. Sending a child off to
college can certainly be stressful for concerned parents. It was in 2018 that my son went off to college. He rarely
contacted us. I couldn’t help asking about other aspects, which sometimes made him complain that I didn’t treat
him as an adult.
To be honest, my son is excellent. Some of my friends always tell me that they admire my son’s characters
and they hope their sons could have some of them.
Unexpectedly, it was 4 o’clock in the morning in 2020, when I received the phone call. “This is the
emergency room calling and your son was just brought in with severe burns on his face, neck and arms. We have
called for an aircraft and are going to fly him to the burn unit in Seattle.” Seattle was 350 miles from his college, so
we knew immediately this was serious.
The doctor described the reason, which caused the burns. At 6 am, my son and his friends decided to
barbecue hamburgers in the courtyard of their apartment. When they lit the charcoal, it burst into flames because
they had sprayed too much gasoline. The flames caught my son’s shirt tail and shot from his waist to well over his
head.
Fortunately, one of the boys who was quick-minded grasped my son and rolled him on the grass. While it
saved his life, it was not in shape to save him from severe burns and terrible scars.
After he recovered from the treatments, the doctors told him they would not do plastic surgery for 6 monthsbecause it takes that long for the skin to stop shrinking and wrinkling.

Ava, a fifth-grader, longed for a cell phone like her peers but had to wait until she was thirteen. To persuade
her parents, she penned an essay, demonstrating she was mature enough for a cell phone. Her parents, impressed,
gave her an old phone.
“Ava,” her dad said seriously, “a cell phone isn’t just for fun and games. It’s a significant responsibility. You
must keep your phone secure. You must silence it in public spaces. You must...” He listed all of the ways that she
had to be responsible with her phone. But Ava, too busy with choosing the perfect wallpaper, downloading apps,
and chatting with her best friend Sarah, only half-listened.
Over the weekend, Sarah’s mom took the girls to a movie. Normally Ava avoided horror films, but Sarah’s
pleading words with funny memes (表情包) had somehow convinced Ava that the movie might actually be
enjoyable. Before the movie started, Sarah’s mom instructed the girls to silence their phones out of respect for
others. As the movie’s tension built, Ava found herself growing increasingly uncomfortable. “I need to go to the
bathroom,” Ava whispered to Sarah.
After the movie, while waiting for Sarah’s mom to fetch the car, Ava felt a sinking feeling. “I can’t find my
phone!” she shrieked, patting down all of her pockets. Panic-stricken, Ava searched her bag, yet her phone seemed
to have vanished. Ava got into the car, her stomach in knots.
“Are you going to tell your parents?” Sarah whispered to Ava on their ride back. Ava was silent, her mind
racing with the consequences. She could envision her parents’ disappointed faces and harsh words. She feared that
this incident might lead to her parents taking away the privilege of having a phone altogether.
As they arrived, Ava climbed out of the car and trudged home, her heart heavy with what had happened.

Summer vacation starting, Steve and I planned to play baseball every day, aiming to join the freshman team.
“If you make it into the team, I’ll buy you a new baseball glove as a present.” My mom’s promise echoed in my
mind as I excitedly waited for Steve, staring at my worn-out glove.
But today I had to clean Mrs. Thompson’s garage first. She was weakened by old age, so my mom always
volunteered me to help her. Mom wouldn’t let me accept any money, thinking she didn’t have much, and literally, I
never minded — after all, Mrs. Thompson had knitted me five sweaters and always made me cakes. Most
importantly, it was the right thing to do.
Steve came rushing out of his house, and I explained the situation. As expected, he immediately said,
“Alright, I’ll help.”
We instantly got to work. The garage was a mess of boxes, but we gathered all our energy and soon brought
the cleanup to an end. When arranging the last box, however, I nudged the shelf accidentally. Before I could react, a
vase fell and crashed to the ground, broken into pieces.
I froze, my heart pounding. The vase was beautiful with delicate designs, which must have cost a fortune.
Glancing at the open garage door, I suggested, “Maybe I can just sweep this up. Mrs. Thompson won’t even
notice.” I responded fast and piled the pieces into the trash bin. But Steve’s expression darkened. “That’s not how it
works. You should tell her what happened.”
I tried to justify myself, telling all the chores I’d done for Mrs. Thompson without pay. I even argued that it
wasn’t my responsibility to pay for something I didn’t destroy on purpose. However, Steve wasn’t buying it, his
voice firm. “You’re better than that. Be responsible.”
We stood there in silence, the weight of the moment hanging between us. Just then, Mrs. Thompson walked
in, giving us a scare. She smiled warmly, unaware of the whole thing. “Boys, I baked a chocolate cake. Now come
in for a piece. I really appreciate all your help.”

I recently received an email from Jack, one of my students, who said that he graduated from university and
became a teacher in a secondary school. He is passing on the same love and warmth that his teacher gave him to his
32 students. This letter took me back 15 years.
One afternoon in April, I walked into a classroom as usual to guide my students, when an eight-year-old boy
named Jack suddenly caught my attention. On his desk were glue and a lot of colored paper, which he was carefully
folding. Jack was an introverted, dyslexic (诵读困难) child who rarely spoke. He was also slow to remember
words.
When I saw Jack at work with his paper and glue, I didn’t disturb him. After a while, a beautiful paper plane
emerged, then he wrote something on the wings with a pen, smiling happily.
As soon as the bell rang, he rushed out of the classroom, tightly holding the paper plane in his hand. He went
to the playground and threw the paper plane with all his might. Jack ran back and forth on the playground with
excitement and shouted, “I did it! I did it!” This was the first time I’d seen Jack happy.
In the following week, I began to observe Jack quietly and found that he carried a small bag in which there
were many different kinds of paper planes, from point y ones to long-tailed ones to wide-winged ones. Every day
after school, he would go to the playground and fly his planes, each with different words written on the wings.
These observations showed me that Jack had strong hands-on abilities and a rich imagination. I felt that there was a
huge potential hidden in his little body.
How could I use this knowledge to build his confidence? I bought some origami (折纸艺术) books for him
and started flying paper planes with him after school. Jack told me his dreams of going to space were written on the
wings of each paper plane. He said that every time he flew a paper plane, his dream would be one step nearer.
Suddenly, I had an idea of having a paper plane competition in class.

This incident occurred during our trip to Cape Cod ,a beautiful sea resort about three-hour drive from the city
of Boston.
Our daughter Margaret who then lived in Salem close to Boston dropped us off at one of the pick-up points
of the tour bus in Boston that morning. We decided to return home on our own as we thought that we could catch a
local train back to Salem from Boston. Margaret insisted that she come to pick us up in the evening but we were
confident of our ability to find our way and, not wanting to trouble her, refused her offer.
We had a great time in Cape Cod and returned to Boston at six in the evening. Yet by mistake, we got off the
bus one stop before the actual Boston commuter rail station. My husband insisted that he had a very good memory
and a keen sense of direction and so I blindly followed him, without knowing where we were heading to. It was not
until around the rail's closing hour that we realized we were completely lost with the station nowhere in sight! It
being a Sunday, the roads were deserted with not many people walking around. Worse still, our phones were out of
battery. That was when we saw a young man coming from the opposite direction. We approached him and
explained the situation. On hearing our problem, he personally took us to the station just a few blocks away.
Upon reaching there, we found to our disappointment that the dollar coins which we put into the ticket machine
just fell through the outlet without printing our tickets. “Only credit card works,” a woman told us before she left.
Obviously, we confidently brought with us no credit card but only enough coins for the return tickets. As we
turned around, we saw the young man still there.

A Valentine’s Day joke is a funny but super sweet way to celebrate love without being quite so serious! Old
Lady Hayes deserved it. She often screamed at us for “borrowing” some roses from her garden. Well, she had it
coming.
At least, that’s the way we saw it as George finished tying the string to the red, heart-shaped box. We
giggled(咯咯笑)as Ron added the final touch: two plastic red roses, glued to the lid. George practiced pulling the
box by the string. I couldn’t wait to see it fly away when she tried to pick it up.
I was the first to notice my dad in the doorway. I froze. Within seconds, my anxiety was shared by all. Dad
walked slowly to the empty candy box. He picked it up, and watched it swing back and forth. Then he looked into
the eyes of the frightened boys.
“It doesn’t seem so long ago that I was playing Valentine’s Day jokes.” he said. “One year my cousins and I
decided to pull one on our grandma even though we loved her. We just wanted to have some fun. We tiptoed to her
doorstep and drew a gift there with red paint. Then we kicked the door and hid behind the bushes. When Grandma
finally appeared, she looked down and reached for the fresh paint. Slowly, she figured out our joke. She smiled,
absently wiping red paint on her clean and white apron(围裙).”Dad paused and for the first time I noticed that his
eyes were wet. “Grandma died later that year. I never had another chance to give her a real Valentine.”
Later that night a red heart-shaped box was placed on Mrs. Hayes’ front doorstep. As we hid behind the
bushes, the cool night air wrapped around us, adding a chill to our excitement. “Do you think she’ll scream?” I
whispered. “Maybe she’ll think it’s a real gift this time,” George replied, trying to hold back his giggles.
