Is there a wonderful moment when parents can become spectators in the lives of their children and shrug, “It’s their life,” and feel nothing? When I was in my twenties, I stood in a hospital passage waiting for doctors to put a few stitches (缝线) in my son’s head. I asked, “When do you stop worry?” The nurse said, “When they get out of the accident stage.” My mother just smiled faintly and said nothing. When I was in my thirties, I sat on a little chair in a classroom and heard how one of my children talked continually and disrupted the class. As if to read my mind, a teacher said. “Don’t worry, they all go through this stage and then you can sit back, relax and enjoy them.” My mother just smiled faintly and said nothing. When I was in my forties, I spent a lifetime waiting for the phone to ring, the cars to come home, the front door to open. A friend said, “They’re trying to find themselves. Don’t worry, in a few years, you can stop worrying. They’ll adults.” My mother just smiled faintly and said nothing. By the time I was 50, I was sick and tired of being weak. I was still worrying over my children, but there was a new wrinkle, there was nothing I could do about it. My mother just smiled faintly and said nothing. I continued to suffer from their failures, and be absorbed in their disappointments. My friends said that when my kids got married, I could stop worrying and lead my own life. I wanted to believe that, but I was haunted by my mother’s warm smile and her occasional “You look pale. Are you all right? Call me the minute you get home. Are you depressed about something?” Can it be that parents are sentenced to a lifetime of worry? One of my children telephoned me last month, saying, “Where were you? I’ve been calling for three days, and no one answered. I was worried.” I smiled a warm smile.24.The author intends to tell us in the passage that ________. A.parents long for a period when they no longer worry about their children B.there is no time when parents have no worry about their children C.it’s parents’ duty to worry about their children D.parents don’t have to worry their children 25.The author mentioned her ages of twenties, thirties, forties and fifty in order to show ________. A.the hard times she experienced in her life B.the different stages of her children C.she had been worrying about her children in her life D.the support she received from her mother 26.What can we infer from the last sentence “I smiled a warm smile”? A.Finally the mother didn’t have to worry about her children. B.The mother was pleased that her child began to worry about her, too. C.At last the mother could live her own life without worry. D.The mother felt satisfied that she had succeeded in turning her children into adults. C “Does my smile look big in this?” Future fitting-room mirrors in clothing stores could subtly adjust your reflection to make you look—and hence feel—happier, encouraging you to like what you see. That’s the idea behind the Emotion Evoking System developed by Shigeo Yoshida and colleagues at the University of Tokyo in Japan. The system can manipulate, or in other words, control your emotions and personal preferences by presenting you with an image of your own smiling or frowning face. The principle that physiological changes can drive emotional ones—that laughter comes before happiness, rather than the other way around—is a well-established idea. The researchers wanted to see if this idea could be used to build a computer system that manipulates how you feel. The system works by presenting the user with a web-camera image of his or her face—as if they were looking in a mirror. The image is then subtly altered with software, turning the corners of the mouth up or down and changing the area around the eyes, so that the person appears to smile or frown. Without telling them the aim of the study, the team recruited 21 volunteers and asked them to sit in front of the screen while performing an unrelated task. When the task was complete, the participants rated how they felt. When the faces on screen appeared to smile, people reported that they felt happier. On the other hand, when the image was given a sad expression, they reported feeling less happy.Yoshida and his colleagues tested whether manipulating the volunteers’ emotional state would influence their preferences. Each person was given a scarf to wear and again presented with the altered webcam image. The volunteers that saw themselves smiling while wearing the scarf were more likely to report that they liked it, and those that saw themselves not smiling were less likely. The system could be used to manipulate consumers’ impressions of products, said the researchers. For example, mirrors in clothing-store fitting rooms could be replaced with screens showing altered reflections. They also suggest people may be more likely to find clothes attractive if they see themselves looking happy while trying them on. “It’s certainly an interesting area,” says Chris Creed at the University of Birmingham, UK. But he notes that using such technology in a shop would be harder than in the lab, because people will use a wide range of expressions. “Attempting to make slight differences to these and ensuring that the reflected image looks believable would be much more challenging,” he says. Of course, there are also important moral questions surrounding such subtly manipulative technology. “You could argue that if it makes people happy, what harm is it doing?” says Creed. “But I can imagine that many people may feel manipulated, uncomfortable and cheated if they found out.” 27.What’s the main purpose of the Emotion Evoking System? A.To see whether laughter comes before happiness. B.To see whether one’s facial expressions can be altered. C.To see whether one’s feeling can be unconsciously affected. D.To replace the mirrors in future clothing-store fitting rooms. 28.What can we learn about the web-camera image in the study? A.It gave the volunteers a false image. B.It attempted to make the volunteers feel happier. C.It recorded the volunteers’ performance in the task. D.It beautified the volunteers’ appearance in the mirror. 29.What does Creed mention as a limitation of the technology? A.It only works in clothing stores. B.It only makes subtle changes to people’s expressions. C.It only changes the areas around the mouth and the eyes. D.It only deals with a limited number of facial expressions.30.What does Creed’s comment on the moral issues with this technology imply? A.Nothing is more important than happiness. B.Technology is unable to manipulate people. C.People should neglect the harm of the technology. D.People should have the right to make decisions independently. D Have you ever seen a kid in class who wouldn’t volunteer to read or answer a question? I was that type of student. Talking in class was a struggle for me because the fear of saying the wrong thing was always on my mind. There were constant announcements about students in our class winning writing awards. It was a dream for me. I have always felt unsure of myself when writing. Semicolons confused me and I used too many commas. I had no idea how to cite anything. During my freshman year, the teacher would pick the best essay in our class to be read out loud, but mine was never chosen. I found it really hard to write an essay. One teacher Mr. Wilson, who taught me the next semester, changed everything. He was in his fifties and had a reputation for having a particular teaching style. He connected writing and reading to football, but somehow it made sense. What really made him special to me was that every class he would pick someone to read their writing out loud to the class. In one of his lessons, he said: “I will not always pick the essay that I think has the best grammar or use of vocabulary. I will pick the one that I think has the most character.” This part was confusing tome because how can writing have character? He went on to explain: “I want to read something that I can tell the writer feel a lot while writing it. I want to feel the emotions you were going through as you wrote it.” A few weeks later, for the first time, my essay was chosen to be read to my classmates. I can’t even remember what it was about, but I remember how nervous I was to see his reaction, mixed with pride at the fact that he felt like my work was worth sharing. He gave me his comments at the end of it, but I was too nervous to remember them. After class, he told me he was excited to read more of my work. He made me feel special in the way he led the class, and I got over my fear of sharing my work in class. He made me believe in my writing abilities and gave me the confidence to continue writing. 31. Talking in class used to be difficult for the author because __________. A. he had never won any awards for speaking B. he didn’t know how to answer questions C. he had no idea how to cite anything D. he was afraid of making mistakes 32. According to the author, what made Mr. Wilson different from other teachers?A. His style of teaching. B. His love for students. C. His interest in writing. D. His passion for football. 33. From the passage, we can know that __________. A. Mr. Wilson preferred essays with good use of vocabulary B. the author remembered Mr. Wilson’s comments very well C. Mr. Wilson thought the author’s passage was full of emotions D. the author believed that his essay was worth sharing in the class 34. Which of the following words can best describe Mr. Wilson? A. Kind and ambitious. B. Honest and confident. C. Creative and inspiring. D. Reliable and generous. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有项为多余选项。 “Just think positively!” “It could be worse.” “You should look at the bright side!” We’ve all heard (and maybe used) these phrases without much thought. But they could be contributing to a culture of toxic(有毒的) positivity. For those new to this term, it might sound like an oxymoron(矛盾修辞法). How can positivity be toxic? Isn’t it supposed to be helpful, or “positive”, as the name suggests? ____35____ “Toxic positivity is when somebody avoids all negative thoughts or feelings, pretending everything is going well when it is not,” explains Melissa Dowd, a therapist at PlushCare, a virtual health platform for primary care and mental health services.Whitney Goodman, the author of Toxic Positivity describes toxic positivity as the “endless pressure to be happy and positive, no matter what the circumstances are.” ____36____ It’s also something we can cause other people to experience. Expressing toxic positivity to others may look like offering them a simple solution to a complicated problem that we know nothing about, or not allowing people around you to appropriately express negative emotions. Toxic positivity causes us to suppress our emotions, which can make them worse. ____37____ “Although it can be helpful to look on the bright side when facing challenges,” Dowd says, “not coping with negative feelings in a healthy way in the moment can lead to those feelings resurfacing later in different areas of your life or as a form of anxiety.” ____38____ “If I feel like you’re going to dismiss me, I’m going to stop sharing how I’m feeling,” Goodman adds.____39____ If you’re using toxic positivity against yourself, Goodman suggests remembering it’s OK if you’re upset about something. It’s valid if something annoys you. “Allow ourselves and other people to share when they’re going through a difficult time,” she says. Dowd adds that it’s essential that “we all learn to cope with and process our emotions in a healthy way as opposed to avoiding how we feel” as life’s stressors continue to rise. For example, instead of simply saying “Just think positively,” we’d better say “Sometimes bad things happen. How can I help?” A.Are there ways to avoid toxic positivity? B.Toxic positivity also disrupts connection. C.It can harm people who are going through difficult times. D.This can come up in different situations when we are dealing with pressure. E.They become more intense and can cause long-lasting health concerns in the future. F.Experts say constant forced positivity can lead to the opposite, and have a negative effect. G.This is what we may bring on to ourselves by not allowing negative thoughts and feelings. 第三部分 书面表达(共两节,共32分) 第一节 阅读表达(共4小题,第40、41题各2分,第42题3分,第43题5分,共12分) 阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。请在答题卡指定区域作答。 Last year, I baked biscuits for complete strangers to say “thank you”. I’d had to call 999 because I found my husband unconscious on the floor. Within minutes, a police car arrived and soon my husband received medical care in hospital. A week later, when I dropped off still-warm biscuits and presented a thank-you note at the police station, the policemen thanked me for delivering gifts. I drove away feeling light and happy. Later, I realized that my natural high might have been more than it seemed.Research has shown that sharing gratitude has positive effects on health. People who express gratitude will increase their happiness levels, lower their blood pressure and get better sleep. What about people who receive gratitude?Research has confirmed that when people receive thanks, they experience positive emotions.“Those are happy surprises,”says Jo-Ann Tsang, a professor of psychology. When someone is thanked,he’s more likely to return the favor or pass kindness on, and his chances of being helpful again doubles, probably because he enjoys feeling socially valued. The give-and-take of gratitude also deepens relationships. Studies show that when your loved ones regularly express gratitude, making you feel appreciated, you’re more likely to return appreciative feelings, which leads tomore satisfactory in your relationships. Nowadays, however, many people don’t express gratitude. Our modern lifestyle may be to blame. With commercial and social media, everything is speeding the younger generation to feel they’re the center of the world. If it’s all about them, why thank others? Why not thank others? Just take a look at how many positive effects can saying “thank you”have on personal . health—and the well-being of others If you aren’t particularly grateful, I strongly suggest you learn to be.People who are instructed to keep gratitude journals,in which they write down positive things that happen to them, cultivate gratitude over time. 40. What health benefits can people gain from expressing gratitude? _______________________________________________________ 41. How do people probably respond when they receive gratitude and feel socially valued? _______________________________________________________ 42. Please decide which part of the following statement is false, then underline it and explain why. ▷ Saying “thank-you”improves relationships, but nowadays some young people don’t want to do it because everything is making them feel blamed by the whole society. _______________________________________________________ 43. If possible, who would you like to express gratitude to most? Why?
