(2024·福建厦门·模拟预测)I was 10 when I saw my first total solar eclipse (日食). It was 1979 and we
were staying in Canada, where my dad worked for a time as a welder (焊工). He was a great science enthusiast and
had been talking about this eclipse for what seemed like years. He just didn’t tell me and my brother that we would
have to get up at daybreak and head out into the freezing February weather to experience this event.
Dad told us we were lucky even to be near the path of totality, and noted that unless we were prepared to
travel extensively, our next chance to see a total solar eclipse likely wouldn’t happen until the 21st century. So, we
rode in moody silence out to some field where loads of other people were wandering about, waiting in the cold for
their moment in the sun’s absence.
My brother complained that we wouldn’t really be able to look at the eclipse without being blinded. But my
dad, who generally thought of everything, produced two awkward welding masks (面罩), which he fitted to our
heads. The masks preserved our eyesight, and also quietened our grousing. It’s hard to know which feature of the
masks my dad appreciated more.
Soon, it didn’t matter. The moon passed between us and the sun. The lights of the world dimmed, then went
dark. There was a collective “Oooooh!” from the crowd. Some people even screamed. My brother simply said,
“Whoa.” And he spoke for all of us down through the ages who have been struck by the awe and wonder of a total
solar eclipse. You can read more about humanity’s encounters with some of the great eclipses in history with our
story on page 40.
My dad did not live to see another eclipse, but he’ll be with me in spirit when I view the next one this April,
right around the time you’re reading this. I hope you get to see it, too.

A school science project by a group of students in Canada has led to an
important discovery: EpiPens, which help control dangerous allergic (过敏的) reactions, might not work in space.
An EpiPen is a shot that puts a medicine called “epinephrine (肾上腺素)” straight into a person’s body with
a needle. The epinephrine calms the allergic reaction so the person can breathe.
But students in the Programme for Gifted Learners had a question about EpiPens: Would they work in space?
The students knew that on Earth, radiation from the sun can change the molecules (分子) of the epinephrine in anEpiPen. They wondered if the same thing would happen when epinephrine was exposed to radiation in space. So
the students designed an experiment to test their idea. They wanted to send samples of the liquid in an EpiPen, as
well as pure epinephrine, into space to see if anything changed.
Working with a group called iEDU, which offers a programme called Cubes in Space, the students sent two
cubes into space — one on a rocket and the other on a balloon. Each cube held a bottle of pure epinephrine and a
bottle of EpiPen liquid.
After the cubes returned to Earth, Dr. Mayer tested the liquids in the bottles once more. The results suggested
that the students had discovered something big. The bottles that held the EpiPen liquid now had no epinephrine at
all. The results from the bottles of pure epinephrine were even more surprising. Only 87% of the liquid was still
epinephrine. The other 13% had turned into poisonous chemicals.
The discovery the students made is a big deal. It suggests that EpiPens might not work in space, and might
even become dangerous. That’s important information for astronauts with allergies. The students now hope to
repeat their experiment a second time, to check their results. They are also working on designing a container that
could protect epinephrine in space.
8.What are EpiPens used to do?
A.Help astronauts breathe properly in space.B.Aid in solving anything urgent in space.
C.Avoid exposing astronauts to radiation. D.Contribute to managing severe allergic reactions.
9.What’s the purpose of the experiment?
A.To test whether epinephrine changes in space.
B.To test the purity of epinephrine in space.
C.To test the difference of radiation on Earth and in space.
D.To test the disadvantages of epinephrine.
10.Who might benefit from the students’ discovery?
A.Astronauts who have some allergies.
B.Chemistry teachers in the middle school.
C.People who have allergic symptoms in their bodies.
D.Experts doing research about space in the lab.
11.What’s the best title for the text?

Human history is full of horse stories like guiding cowboys home on foggy
nights and taking wounded soldiers through battle zones. Such sensible and highly trained horses made Elina Jatel,
a computer scientist and roboticist, think of robots. “A horse that can take a rider home on its own would be the
highest level of autonomy,” Jatel says. “You trust them with your life.” She was drawn to learning how such
relationships form and if it could help improve human-robot interactions.
For a year, Jatel engaged herself in the horse world. She watched classes in horse training, and she also
talked with students, instructors, trainers and horse owners. Along the way, Jatel even learned to ride.
Horses learn signals from their trainers on how to comfortably interact with people. People, too, must learn
their part. Riders must learn what a horse wants or feels based on its behavior, and what signals to use to direct
horses to perform in desired ways. Jatel found some similarities, here, to working with robots. People must learn
how to direct robots to do specific tasks. They also must learn what to do when robots don’t perform as planned. The goal is to program robots that will respond predictably to inputs from people. But like horses, autonomous
robots also should be able to respond on their own as conditions change. For example, a self-driving car must stop
to avoid hitting something, even if some human mistakenly tells it to keep going.
Trainers and riders work with horses to build respect. Horses show that respect by matching their pace to a
human or giving someone who is leading them a safe degree of personal space. Trainers begin their work with a
horse by getting them to show signs of respect in basic interactions, Jatel says. Later, trainers will develop more
complex interactions. Gradually, a horse’s respect can grow into trust.
But that trust is not given. And there may be a similar limitation with robots. What would it mean for robots
and people to respect and trust each other? For now, she adds, this is largely uncharted territory. But she’s looking
to build a path.
12.What drew Elina Jatel’s attention to horses?
A.Horses’ amazing performance. B.Long history of horse training.
C.Horse-human interdependence. D.Her horse-riding experience.
13.What are the robots of the highest autonomy designed to do?
A.To act like real horses. B.To show respect to humans.
C.To follow instructions from humans. D.To make independent and sensible decisions.
14.What will Jatel’s future research most probably focus on?
A.The limitations of robots. B.Trust between robots and humans.
C.Path toward higher robot efficiency. D.Similarities between horses and robots.
15.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.History of Human-Horse Relationship B.Secrets of Human-Animal Interactions
C.The Role of Trust in Human-Robot Partnerships D.Horses as the Inspiration for Autonomous Robots

If you’ve ever thought about just taking a trip yourself instead of waiting for someone to join you, you’re not
alone. 16 However, do you count yourself among the many who have tried it? If you’re planning your
own solo trip, here are four important things to keep in mind.
17 Since you’re traveling solo, how you choose to explore it is entirely up to you. This is your
chance to do whatever you want whenever you want because this time, you’re running the show.
Don’t be afraid to talk to random people. Though there is someone who poses a threat, it’s important to
remember that not everyone is out to get you. 18 That’s because you’re a novelty, a person from another
country who is visiting theirs. Therefore, instead of putting on your headphones or instantly seeing them as
weirdos, use this spontaneous chat as a chance to meet the locals or get recommendations for things to do during
your trip.
It’s okay to have bad days. 19 It happens and it’s completely okay to take some time to processwhatever it is you’re feeling. Take yourself to a movie or spend the day dong something relaxing like writing in
your journal or reading on the beach.
It’s okay to start small. 20 Start by doing a staycation in another part of town, spending a few days
in a new locale a bus or train ride away. Just do whatever you’re comfortable with and see how it all feels for you.
A.You are the boss of your own adventure.
B.You need to make an unusual travel choice.
C.It’s no secret that solo travel is on the rise.
D.Sometimes things can go incredibly wrong.
E.People like you simply don’t know how to start.
F.Most of the time people are just curious and try to be friendly.
G.Remember, your first solo trip doesn’t have to be to a whole other continent.

specifically 43.to restore 44.unnecessary 45.wisdom
village was established in the late Yuan Dynasty”是时间状语从句,主句谓语has produced使用了现在完成时态,
故填since。
故填an。
故填being。
故填where。
故填was included。
“(raise) for Jili silk”作后
raised。42.
故填to restore。

I still remember what I felt on a bright Saturday morning in late September, at a five-kilometer race in
Clarkston, Georgia.
It was an unusual morning. About an hour earlier, when we drove into town to participate in the race, my 11-
year-old son noticed a green tree cricket(蟋蟀) on my car. It was friendly, no longer than a fingernail. It jumped
onto my son’s finger, and walked across my shirt, and then went back to my son’s hand, where it stayed so long thatwe eventually gave it a name: Little Friend.
The walk from the car to the registration table was perhaps a quarter of a mile. Little Friend stayed with my
son. Then, we walked back across the railroad tracks and waited for the race to start. A few minutes before the race,
Little Friend either fell or jumped off my son’s hand and landed on the sidewalk. Maybe it wanted to go free. But
this was not a good place for that. Pedestrian(行人) traffic was heavy, so Little Friend was in danger. My son
knelt and reached out his hand. It came back.
The race was about to start, and the tiny green insect was in for a wild ride. My son would run fast, and the
race would be long. The race began. I ran well enough, and felt excited at the finish line. But that thrill gave way to
anxiety when my son didn’t show up.
I knew he could run 5 kilometers in about 30 minutes. When I didn’t see him at the 35-minute mark, I began
to wonder what had gone wrong. And as the 40-minute mark approached and he still didn’t appear, I went out
looking for him. Had he got lost? I crossed the railroad tracks and looked down a long straightaway, hoping to see
his face. Finally, there he was, just ahead of the 45-minute mark.

Little Friend was riding proudly on one finger of my son’s right hand. It was like a very small captain on
a very big ship. My predictions had been wrong. My son hadn’t run fast. He blamed a cold he was getting over. However, I knew the real reason. While he was running, his arms would swing, and Little Friend would be bounced
and eventually fall to the ground, which would certainly put its life in danger. So my son had to slow down his
running speed to protect it. But I didn’t question him too much about it. I think there’s more than one way to win a
race.
Smiling, we walked back to the car with Little Friend. My son carefully found some bushes in the parking lot
which seemed like a good place for him to drop off Little Friend. He seemed lost and unwilling to give up on Little
Friend. But he knew their brief and intense friendship had to run its course. “Be free,” my son said, and gently
pushed Little Friend. It took some more pushes, and Little Friend finally sprang from his finger and jumped
downward, its bright green body integrated with the dark green bushes. The small creature went out of sight and
sought its freedom.
