B On July 14, 2017, Maryam Mirzakhani, Stanford professor of mathematics and thefirst female winner oftheFields Medal in Mathematics, died at theage of40. The news was especially hard-hitting for a generation of younger academics who have always held Maryam as a role model whose example is helping redefine women's status in science and especially mathematics. What was fun was that Maryam always tried to avoid the media's spotlight. Her modesty (谦虚 ) and simplicity despite being the first woman to gain such high status in the world of mathematics—winning what's often called the "Nobel Prize of math"—stood out to thosewhoknew her. Maryam originally wanted to be a writer, a passion of hers that never faded away even during her postgraduate studies. However, she found an even greater joy in how rewarding it felt to solve mathematical problems. As a student, she was the first female member of Iran's national team to participate in the International Math Olympiad (IMO), and shewon two goldmedals in two years—stilla record. She received her bachelor's degree in Iran and later studied at Harvard. In 2014, Maryam was recognized with the Fields Medal, the highest-ranking award in mathematics. C Scientists say the plant enset, an Ethiopian staple (主食), could be a new superfood and a lifesaver in the face of climate change. "This is a crop that can play a really important role in addressing food security and sustainable development," said auniversity professor inAwasa, Ethiopia. Enset, or "false banana", is a close relative of the banana but is consumed only in one part of Ethiopia. The banana-like fruit of the plant is inedible (无法食用的), butthe stemsand roots can beprocessed to make porridgeand bread. However, Ethiopia is isolated (隔离) by dry lowlands, which are unsuitable for enset to grow. And the procedures for enset raising and preparing require special knowledge. Therefore, despite its wild relatives distributing across Africa, enset is onlyused as a crop in Ethiopiaand has never been widely adopted elsewhere. Using agricultural surveys and modelling work, scientists found the crop could 高三英语试题 第 5 页 (共 12 页)potentially feed more than 100 million people and boost food security in Ethiopia and otherAfrican countries. Study researcher Dr James Borrell, of the Royal Botanic Gardens, said planting enset as an alternative crop for tough times could help support food security."It's got somereally unusual characteristics that make it absolutely unique as a crop," he said. Reaching ten meters tall, as few as 15 enset plants can feed a person for a year. Also, it has flexible harvest times, stores well, and is relatively drought and disease tolerant.Allthese features haveearned itthename, "the tree against hunger". There is growing interest in seeking new plants to feed the world. Nearly halfof all the calories we eat come from three species - rice, wheat, and corns. "We need to diversify the plants we use globally as a staple because all our eggs are in a very smallbasket at themoment," said DrBorrell. 28.What canwe knowabout enset? A. Now, a Seattle-based company is working to bring equally deep analysis tothetrillionsof proteins withinourbodies. Nautilus Biotechnology, a company founded in 2016 by Seattle's Sujal Patel and the San Francisco Bay Area's Parag Mallick, is developing a device to identify and count 95% ofthedifferent types ofproteins in abiological sample. Human cells can contain roughly 20,000 different types of proteins, with crucial functions ranging from digestion to disease protection. Each cell has a varying amount of each protein. The company wants to measure the key machinery (机制) 高三英语试题 第 6 页 (共 12 页)inside cells with a level of detail that has never been done before. Existing tools, it says. can only measure upto 8%ofthedifferent types ofproteins in bloodsamples. So why count proteins at all? Research shows healthy cells and diseased cells have differing amounts and forms of each protein. For example, cancer cells may have more of ProteinAthan Protein B. Knowing that might help in two ways: First, doctors could look for higher Protein A levels to detect cancer early. Second, researchers could betterdesign drugs to target ProteinA. Nautilus says such protein measurements, which are unique to every person and change throughout people's lives, will not only help doctors identify more specific forms of disease but also help pharmaceutical (制药) companies find more precise drugs with fewersideeffects. While othercompanies also are building newprotein analysis machines, experts and prospective customers have expressed excitement over Nautilus's approach. Mallick, chief scientist of Nautilus and the brain behind its technology, is confident: "It's not every day when you get…to work on something. That's the opportunity to change all ofbiology." 32.What istheSeattle-based company doing? A.Trying to count theamounts ofblood cells. B. ExaminingDNAfor personalized information. C. Developing adevice to analyze people's proteins. D. Revealing more about ourancestry withDNAtesting. 33.What makes theinvention ofthedevice possible? A. Precise drugs are guaranteed. B. Cellanalysis techniques develop fast. C. Proteinsare mucheasier to beanalyzed. D. Protein amounts and forms vary from cell to cell. 34.In which area will thedevicebe helpful? A. Disease monitoringand machinedesign B. Diseasedetection anddrug development. C. Diseaseprevention and targeted treatment. D. Disease treatment and sideeffect prevention. 35.Which ofthefollowing isa suitabletitle forthetext? A. CombiningDNATesting with ProteinAnalysis B. SettingaNew Exampleof Medical Solution C. Making changes will lead to positive results, like relieving stress and increasing the quality of work, family timeandjoy. 36 Here are some ways to beat procrastination. ◆Acknowledge theneed to change. If you're a master procrastinator, stop making excuses and acknowledge the reasons why procrastination isbad. 37 ◆Identify and understand your feelings. You may feel fearful about the size of a task, proud of your productivity, and anxious about your time. ___38___ However, could you break a huge project up into manageable tasks? Might you need to say "no" more often to give the proper time and attention to the more important things? Can you set a time limit on your break, maybe15to 20minutes? ◆ 39 For master procrastinators, the idea of working too early on a task is stupid. But remember: Just because you start working on something doesn't mean you have to finish. By starting, you get the juices flowing, allowing you to get more done than you anticipated. Additionally, you increase the quality of your work because every timeyou revise your thing, it gets better. ◆Usethefive-minute rule. If you find yourself with some free time and you need to convince yourself to start working on a difficult task, follow the five-minute rule. Force yourself to work on a task for just five minutes, with the understanding that you can quit after five minutes if you like. 40 And it will often turn into much more than five minutes. But even ifitdoesn't, you've donethe hardest thing ofall: Gotten started. So, remember: Fighting procrastination is a life-long battle. But it's a winnable one. A. But howto? B.Work onstuffearlier. C.What are thepossibleresults? D.These emotionsare quitenatural. E. Pay special attention to thequality of yourwork. F.This simplemental trick is usually justtoget you started. G. Unfortunately, I was already too late, and my dog was nowhere in sight. I walked a fewblocks, but Iwas unable to find him. Depressed, I returned home. My mother was standing at the door waiting, and she asked me what had happened. “I know I was supposed to walk our dog,” I admitted, “but I thought he would be able to go outside and come back by himself. Carrying the signs made by my mother, I kept posting them. In the meantime, whenever there were people passing by, I would ask if they had met such a dog. I even knocked from door to door, asking if they had seen it. No luck. Nobody claimed to have spotted our dog. What if I had taken the dog out for a walk? Tears of regret welled up in my eyes. As the darkness fell, I decided to come back home to check if anybody had called. When I returned, my mother was waiting for me, smiling broadly. There, behind my mother, was our lovely dog looking up at me eagerly. Upon seeing me, it raced towards me. I couldn’t hold my tears. “It just came back by itself,” my mother said gently. Hugging the dog with relief, I apologized to my mother sincerely. “I am sure you have learned your lesson today,” my mother replied in a comforting voice. I played with my sister and the dog again. Despite the freezing weather outside, my heart warmed up. It was on the day that I learned the value of responsibility. Text 1 M: Our school football team played very well. Did you watch it yesterday? W: No, I couldn’t make it. I was stuck in the laboratory. Text 2 W: John, ask your father to come to have dinner now. M: Alright. But where is he? Is he in the living room? W: No, he must be watering the vegetables in the garden. Text 3 M: Is that physics course really as hard as everybody says? W: Worse, believe it or not. Text 4 W: Steven, what time is your flight? M: It leaves at 6:30 this evening. I’m starting off at 4:30 to avoid rush-hour traffic. W: OK, but don’t forget your video conference with Mr. Brown at 2:30 pm. Text 5 W: You know what? An exhibition of Picasso’s paintings is being held in the Art Gallery. Do you want to go with me? M: How can I miss it? But it is burning hot. We will melt if we cycle there. W: So we have no choice but to take the subway. If only we had a car! Text 6 M: How was the activity holiday? W: It really wore me out. There were many activities: climbing, walking, sailing and so on. Every day was somewhat different, and then on the last day they gave out prizes to the best people at each activity. M: Did you get one? W: Yeah. I was surprised to get one. Climbing was awful – I couldn’t reach the top of the wall. My team was the best at the walking, though. We were left in a place and had to find our way back. We were first because luckily I could read the map. Text 7 M: What are you up to lately? W: I have been reading a book named Maybe You Should Talk to Someone. M: How do you feel about it? W: It is wonderful. I got to this book by chance. Then I was attracted from the very first page. M: Tell me more! W: Lori Gottlieb, the writer, helps the readers become aware of his or her own barriers and strengths. I could even relate to some of the situations in the book. It is very real and not boring at all. M: So it is nothing like the serious books written by Aaron Esterson or Erik Erikson. W: You bet! Lori Gottlieb is an excellent storyteller. Plus, the chapters are bite-sized, both laugh- out-loud funny and inspiring. M: Sounds good. I will give it a shot.W: I am sure you will find someone to talk to after reading the book. Text 8 M: Are you traveling in Sydney, too? W: No. I’m here to attend a three-week course. M: What are you studying, then? W: It’s more like a training course. I’m a school teacher, and the course is about a special teaching method. It’s for helping children who have difficulty in reading. M: What does that mean? W: Well, it’s not that they don’t know how to read, but rather, they can’t understand what they read. M: Okay. I thought it was for kids who can’t see clearly. Anyway, it sounds very meaningful. W: Thanks. M: Is Sydney the only place where you can take this course? W: No, but it’s much cheaper here. It also lasts longer, which means it provides more information. Text 9 M: Good morning. Today we’ll talk about goal-setting and we have a special guest here, Kate Warwick. Welcome to our program, Mrs. Warwick. W: Thank you! M: So Mrs. Warwick, can you tell us about your work in goal-setting? W: Well. When it comes to goal-setting, I’m really focused. For example, if I want to lose weight, I will get a group of close friends around me and tell them I want to lose weight and increase my health. Then I’ll take action to achieve this goal by stopping eating unhealthy foods, etc. M: Why do you gather some close friends together? W: It is important for me because I need support. I know I can’t do it on my own. Also it helps, because I am able to share my problems with them. And by telling other people “I really want to do this and I seek your help”, they can keep you honest, I suppose. M: And why is it that most people do so badly at reaching goals? W: They lose focus. Everybody’s life is busy. There is so much happening in everybody’s life that what happens is that they might have a goal, and then something will get in the road of that. Text 10 How many bicycles do you need in your life? For 67-year-old Chai Lin, the answer is 1,300. Chai’s passion for bicycles dates back to the 1960s. However, a bicycle was very expensive then. Thanks to all the efforts and support in his family, Chai got his first bike in 1980. After becoming a successful businessman years later, Chai began to collect bikes of various brands and ages, especially antiques, from around the world. Hard-won items have brought Chai great satisfaction. With his collection growing, there was no space big enough to keep it. In 2009, he invested 200 million yuan for a museum just for his bikes. After 10 years’ efforts, the Gansu Sanmu Bicycle Museum finally opened to the public in January 2019 free of charge. The museum stores not only bikes, some 200 years old, but also some 13,500 bike-related parts, books and photos. The museum has been used as an off-campus research center for local primary and middle school students and is also popular with tourists. Chai has equipped the museum with the latest technology. Due to limited space, a large part of Chai’s collection is not yet exhibited. Chai hopes to enlarge the displaying area.
