A Once upon a time, a poor widow in China opened a noodle shop. The noodles were good, but the spicy, crunchy sauce she put on them was even better. Soon, people came from far and wide to buy it (while rivals tried their best to copy it). The enterprising widow, Tao Huabi, decided to open a factory to bottle her magic sauce. It became the best-selling chile-sauce brand in China and made Ms. Tao a billionaire. This is the true story of chile crisp, a chile oil boosted by crunchy chiles (菜椒), fermented (发酵) soybeans, garlic and, okay, MSG. The “it” condiment (调味料) of the pandemic, this vigorous booster of taste and texture is a gift to fatigued cooks who struggle to find joy in the kitchen. Unlike so many game-changing Asian ingredients that Westerners “discover”, this one is actually relatively new. Ms. Tao launched her Lao Gan Ma, or “God-mother” brand in 1997. It is now available worldwide. Noodles, dumplings and stir-fries are obvious and very good uses for this sauce. But the chile-crisp-mad internet has inspired all manner of mashups. Chile crisp on broccoli, pineapple and even vanilla ice cream are all guaranteed to garner (获得) likes.1.What can we learn about chile crisp according to paragraph 2? A.Cooks often send chile crisp to others as a gift. B.Chile crisp is mixed up with many other ingredients. C.The story behind chile crisp is attractive to many foreigners. D.Chile crisp was discovered by Westerners before later becoming popular in China. 2.The captions (说明文字) from the illustration shown in the article are meant to ________. A.list the ingredients of the popular chile sauce B.explain the procedures for making chile crisp C.illustrate the design of the chile sauce brand label D.introduce the various ways chile crisp can be included in various dishes 3.This article aims to ________. A.promote the produce “God-mother” B.introduce the enterpriser Tao Huabi C.list innovated ways to eat chile crisp D.compare China’s chile crisp with that of the chile crisp that can be found in different cultures. B I spent time at my father’s house and mountain cabin this weekend, both of which have plug -in electric kettles. I enjoyed how quickly they boiled water, plus it’s kind of nice to not have to run across the house to stop the unbearable scream of the whistle( 哨 声 ) , My father was shocked that I didn’t own one, but I explained that I value the classic design of my Revere Ware kettle and I enjoy boiling water on the stove for my tea. However, I’m nothing if not practical. I have a gas stove and the price of natural gas has been coming up, which isn’t ending any time soon. We’re not as bad as Europe, where people are removing their beloved stoves due to skyrocketing gas prices, but it’s certainly worth considering the cost of gas vs. electricity. The gas company is rolling out a 25% rate increase, which made me dive down this rabbit hole. It’s not easy to compare gas to electric costs, as an electric kettle uses 1. 5 kilowatts to boil water and it takes 6428 British therm units (BTUs)to boil water using a standard gas stove. Of course, the gas company uses “therms”, and there are 1. 00024e-5 therms in one BTU. 1 kWh=0. 0341296 therms and I pay 14.47e/kWh for electricity and 61. 458≠/therm for gas. So you can see why you almost need an advanced mathematics degree to puzzle out the cost of heating a kettle on the gas stove vs. a plug-in electric. Of course you also have to consider that you’re not actually boiling water for a full hour I never got even close to a point where I could do the math, but I did come to the conclusion that I could stop mindlessly filling the entire kettle when I’m having just a single cup of tea. Plus my low-tech kettle was produced without planned obsolescence( 过 时 )and should last for a very long time. No additional purchases necessary. 4.What does the author think of her father’s electric kettles? A.They cause annoying noise B.They are inconvenient to use C.They are classic in design. D.They lose some traditional flavor5.What do the underlined words “dive down this rabbit hole” probably mean in paragraph 2? A.Hold a negative attitude to life. B.Consider moving somewhere else C.Get into an awkward situation. D.Study how to escape like a rabbit 6.Why are the figures mentioned in paragraph 3? A.To stress an advanced math degree is rewarding B.To show it’s hard to make an economical choice C.To prove the gas company has overcharged users D.To explain the author is a price-sensitive consumer 7.What might the author do with her old kettle? A.Keep using it. B.Upgrade it. C.Replace it. D.Sell it C Working out for 30 minutes every day “might not be enough” to counter the health issues created by long time sitting, according to a sweeping new study. The new study, unlike the past ones that examined sitting and formal exercise separately, ignoring light activities, involved 3702 people to find out how those all affected people’s health indices(指数). With the data collected, researchers characterized people by how they moved. The first group dutifully exercised for a half-hour and then sat, almost nonstop, for more than 10hours a day. Another group similarly worked out for 30 minutes and sat for long hours. But, in between, they rose often and took walks around, spending time in light activities like fetching another cup of coffee. The third group sat, uninterrupted, for up to 10 hours, but also collected an hour of exercise most days. The final group, which the researchers named “the movers,” exercised about an hour most days, while also moving lightly for about two hours more. When the researchers cross-checked these groups against people’s current health data, the first group had the worst indices. On the contrary, the other groups were all better off and to about the same extent, with relatively improved blood sugar control and cholesterol(胆固醇) levels and about 8 percent less body fat than the first group. “A single 30-minute, daily workout ‘might not be enough’ to reduce the downsides of long time sitting,” said Vahid Farrahi, the lead author of the new study.“In addition to a brisk(轻快的) workout, we need to move lightly and often, cleaning, taking the stairs, taking a walk in the halls or just not remaining still.” 8.How is the new study different from the previous ones? A.It examined sitting and exercise separately. B.It proved that light activities were ignored. C.It took light activities into consideration. D.It suggested working out for a half-hour. 9.What do we know from the data in the new study? A.The first group spent a half-hour on light activities after long sitting. B.The second group got similar improved health indices as the movers. C.The third group collected an hour’s exercise during 10 hours’ sitting.D.The movers got up every 30 minutes for formal exercise for an hour. 10.What light activity is suggested to go with formal exercise? A.Reading while sitting. B.Swimming in the pool. C.Working out in the gym. D.Walking in the gym hall. 11.What can we infer from Vahid’s words? A.It’s better to exercise more often than half an hour every day. B.Moving lightly and often is more useful than we have thought. C.Working out harder and longer is better than just moving lightly. D.A 30-minute workout has little help for long time sitting problems. D As cities balloon with growth, access to nature for people living in urban areas is becoming harder to find. If you’re lucky, there might be a pocket park near where you live, but it’s unusual to find places in a city that are relatively wild. Past research has found health and wellness benefits of nature for humans, but a new study shows that wildness in urban areas is extremely important for human well-being. The research team focused on a large urban park. They surveyed several hundred park-goers, asking them to submit a written summary online of a meaningful interaction they had with nature in the park. The researchers then examined these submissions, coding (编码) experiences into different categories. For example, one participant’s experience of “We sat and listened to the waves at the beach for a while” was assigned the categories “sitting at beach” and “listening to waves.” Across the 320 submissions, a pattern of categories the researchers call a “nature language” began to emerge. After the coding of all submissions, half a dozen categories were noted most often as important to visitors. These include encountering wildlife, walking along the edge of water, and following an established trail. Naming each nature experience creates a usable language, which helps people recognize and take part in the activities that are most satisfying and meaningful to them. For example, the experience of walking along the edge of water might be satisfying for a young professional on a weekend hike in the park. Back downtown during a workday, they can enjoy a more domestic form of this interaction by walking along a fountain on their lunch break. “We’re trying to generate a language that helps bring the human-nature interactions back into our daily lives. And for that to happen, we also need to protect nature so that we can interact with it,” said Peter Kahn, a senior author of the study. 12.What phenomenon does the author describe at the beginning of the text? A.Pocket parks are now popular. B.Wild nature is hard to find in cities. C.Many cities are overpopulated. D.People enjoy living close to nature. 13.Why did the researchers code participant submissions into categories? A.To compare different types of park-goers. B.To explain why the park attracts tourists. C.To analyze the main features of the park.D.To find patterns in the visitors’ summaries. 14.What can we learn from the example given in paragraph 5?A.Walking is the best way to gain access to nature. B.Young people are too busy to interact with nature. C.The same nature experience takes different forms. D.The nature language enhances work performance. 15.What should be done before we can interact with nature according to Kahn? A.Language study. B.Environmental conservation. C.Public education. D.Intercultural communication. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) Studies have shown that to cultivate (培养) gratitude can increase an individual’s happiness, reduce one’s sadness, and give strength to a person. Those who consciously express and cultivate gratitude have been reported to have much higher self-esteem (自尊) compared to those who do not. They are also more willing to help others. 16 Wondering how you yourself can cultivate gratitude more and more every single day? Below are some wonderful tips to follow. A board on the wall is a great boost, especially in work environments. 17 Remember that it is very important to acknowledge what to appreciate, especially when you don’t really feel grateful. It can change your mood for the better right away. 18 Another way to cultivate gratitude in your life, whether at home or in the workplace, is gratitude cards. Give them to your colleagues or your clients. You can show your appreciation by saying what you’re actually grateful for on the cards. Give heart-felt thanks. It’s not your casual thank you, like saying “hi” without really thinking about it. We’re talking about good quality, deeply grateful, heartfelt thanks. When someone goes out of their way to do something really important for you, you should make them know how grateful you are to them. 19 If possible,do it in person. This will have a bigger impact if you say it rather than just emailing them. 20 Cultivating gratitude will not only help you keep going in a challenging work environment, but also make you have a positive attitude to do an amazing job or to accomplish a difficult task. A.Gratitude cards. B.Gratitude journal. C.This type of behavior always connects to greater happiness. D.And you can’t wait to help others see this positive change as well. E.The board lets everyone write down what they are grateful for. F.And let them believe you can’t wait to do something awesome for them, too. G.Just imagine the positive culture shift if everyone went ahead and thanked other people for their help.
