Amsterdam is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world, famous for its
beautiful canals, top art museums, cycling culture and so on. It is the capital city of the
Netherlands and oftenreferred to as the “Veniceof the North” because of its expansive system
of bridges and canals. Here are some of the key points to remember as you plan your trip to
Amsterdam.
Must-SeeAttractions
Most visitors begin their Amsterdam adventure in the Old Centre, which is full of
traditional architecture, shopping centers, and coffee shops. You’ll also want to check out
Amsterdam’s Museum Quarter in the South District, which is great for shopping at theAlbert
Cuyp Market and having a picnic in the Vondelpark. The top museums to visit there are the
Rijksmusuem,theAnnFrankHouse,andtheVanGoghMuseum.
IfYouHaveTime
There are several other unique districts in Amsterdam, and you should try to explore as
many of them as time allows. The Canal Ring is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was
originally built to attract wealthy home owners and is a center for celebrity spotting and

It was late on a Thursday evening in Austin, Texas, and I had just finished my shift
downtown waiting tables. I hopped into my truck and headed away from the chaos to my own
personal oasis, Dan’s Depot. It was on a four-lane road that went straight from the heart of
Austin to West Texas. Once, Dan’s Depot had been outside of the city. But with Austin’s
population growing and the city’s expansion, it was swallowed up by high-rise buildings and
skyscrapers.

I slid my truck into the last free spot and headed to the door. “How’s it going, Maude?” I
asked. “David, I just don’t know what we’re going to do,” she said. “Our contract with the
landlord is up for renewal at the end of the month, and he has doubled the rent. Even if we

My heart dropped. On some level, I’d been expecting to hear this news for as long as I’d
been coming to Dan’s Depot. After all, Dan’s Depot was now sandwiched between a shop
selling yoga pants to people who could afford personal trainers and a luxury furniture store
where even a simple dining chair cost more than $1,000. How could this little live music bar
survivewiththosekindsofneighbors?
“Whatareyougoingtodowiththisplace?Areyoumoving?”Iasked.Sheshookherhead

“Hear me out,” I said. “I’ve got enough money to go in with you and Dan as a third
partner. I know the Texas music scene in and out, and I can get the best new bands in here
every week. We’ll move it way down South CongressAvenue, where it’s still close enough to

Maude was still staring at me silently. I began to grow uneasy. Had I offended her? I
started apologizing. She cut me off with a huge embrace. “Honey, I think that’s a fantastic
idea.”

This is just the nature of the beast. There is absolutely no truth to the persistent myths that

Quite often, no matter how good you are, your success is dependent on how other people
such as your boss, peers, clients and customers perceive (感知) your communication and
responses.
So when you come to people who make the key difference between helping you or
holdingyouback,howcanyouinfluenceandpersuadethemtogivewhatyouwant?
Psychological research repeatedly shows that people generally make up their minds

What can you do about it? You need to make a good impression on others to ensure they like
you and give you what you want. Research again shows that people give opportunities to the
people they like best. In fact, most people make up their minds about other people in the first
five minutes or less of meeting someone. These are called first impressions or “moments of
truth”.
高三英语 第 4 页 共9页Once they make up their minds, they tend to be very reluctant to change their opinions.
You hardly have room for error when making a first impression on a new acquaintance.
Therefore,whetheryouareapplyingforajob,goingforaninterview,attendingameetingwith
your boss or peers, or serving a customer, you need to prepare yourself mentally and rehearse
how you will manage the first few minutes of your interaction. This includes doing your
homework to gather information and researching all possible issues so you will know how to
