B (2025·福建省泉州高中毕业班上学期质量检测(二)) About once a week, a veterinarian (兽医) Kwane Stewart heads down to San Diego’s East Village to make his rounds, serving the dogs, cats and birds who are the treasured pets of downtown’s homeless community. Stewart’s parents were huge animal lovers. By age 6, he knew he wanted to be a vet. After graduation from a Colorado veterinary science program, he spent the next decade as a veterinarian. In 2008, he worked as head veterinarian at a country-run animal shelter in an area struck by the Great Recession. He saw pets abandoned and the work was extremely depressing. Four years into the shelter job, Stewart said he was burned out with guilt and ready to quit. Then one morning on his way to work, he saw a homeless man and a dog. He treated the dog’s skin condition and the animal was transformed. The owner was beyond grateful and said, “Thanks for not ignoring me and for treating my dog.” “That was the moment for me. I got back to saving animals and doing it on my own terms.” Stewart said. A few weeks later he set up a pop-up veterinary clinic at a soup kitchen, and when clients there suggested he take his services further, his new job as “Street Vet” began. In addition to treating common diseases, Stewart often provides vaccinations (接种疫苗) and general wellness checks. He also promotes “fear-free” pet care. Many of the people Stewart serves are not just grateful for the help but also form a deep bond with him, seeing him as someone who not only treats their pets but also acknowledges their humanity. “I can dream a little bit that people from all over the world will want to emulate what I do. ”Stewart said. Right now, he is building a network of trusted volunteers, technicians with hospitals and clinics. “These are all people who just reached out and said, ‘I’m inspired by what you do. How do I do it?’” he said. 4.What do we know about Steward’s current job? A.He runs an animal shelter. B.He adopts abandoned pets. C (2025·山东省济南市高三质量检测) Robots are separated into two parts: the brain and the body. An AI brain can help run the traffic system of a city, but many robots still struggle to open a door — why is that? “Software has advanced rapidly in recent years, but hardware has not kept up. Currently, all robots rely on electricity and software to function. The robotic brain composed of software translates information to the body or hardware through an encoder (编码器), which then performs an action,” said Dr Antonio Forte, a senior lecturer in engineering at King’s College London. To overcome this, Forte’s team developed a circuit by integrating liquid-based circuits with an adjustable valve (阀) placed within a robot’s hardware. This valve acts like a switch in a normal circuit and engineers can send signals directly to hardware using variations in pressure from liquid inside, allowing the robot to perform complex tasks without the need for electricity or instruction from the central brain. This leads robots to function independently in challenging environments, such as low-income countries that do not have reliable access to electricity. Independent from the software running it, the advanced hardware system carries the majority of computational load by itself. This opens up the possibility of a new generation of robots, whose bodies could operate independently of their built-in control center, with this space potentially being used instead for more complex AI-powered software, and consequently they can be more aware of their social context, which provides for原创精品资源学科网独家享有版权,侵权必究! 4 / 15 学学科科网网(((北北北京京京)股))份股股有份份限有有公限限司公公司司a new kind of robotics in places like social care and mass production. “Ultimately, without investment in such field robots will stay at a certain level after a period of growth. Soon, if we do not offload the computational tasks that modern-day robots take on, computing improvements will have little impact on their performance. The work is just a first step on this path, but the future holds smarter robots with smarter bodies,” Mostafa Mousa, a post-graduate researcher at King’s College London, commented. 8.What is holding back the development of robots nowadays? A.Backward hardware. B.High electricity cost. C.Low-speed encoders. D.Complex calculations. 9.How does the valve function in a robot? A.It translates information. B.It adjusts liquid pressure. C.It sends electrical signals. D.It powers robots’ brains. 10.What sets the new generation of robots apart from others? A.Autonomy with adaptability. B.Resistance to physical damage. C.Understanding of users’ likes. D.Capability to control softwares. 11.What does Mousa think of the work of Forte’s team? A.Eventful. B.Doubtful. C.Promising. D.Dismissive. D (2025·广东省大湾区普通高中毕业班联合模拟考试(一)) Socrates declared that the unexamined life wasn’t worth living for a human being, implying that we should attempt to know ourselves, to think through our actions, choices, prejudices, and attitudes. But when it comes to thinking about our own happiness and what makes our lives go well, it really does seem that this reflective attitude can ruin our chances of finding what we seek. Perhaps it’s not surprising that we are better designed for engaging in other activities than reflecting on how best to achieve our own happiness and well-being. Doing things that enhance our growth in physical, social and intellectual areas tends to bring the reward of feeling good, and so stimulates us further to pursue those activities. Sitting around reflecting on what will make us happy is a lot less efficient than chasing the things that make us happy, and if we think too much, there is an opportunity cost — time that we could have spent in a worthwhile activity has gone while we were thinking deeply about the best way to develop. The philosopher David has written about the role of reflective thinking in sports. One of his observations is原创精品资源学科网独家享有版权,侵权必究! 5 / 15 学学科科网网(((北北北京京京)股))份股股有份份限有有公限限司公公司司that while sportspeople need to think about the basic actions they are performing, it can be counterproductive to start thinking about the elements making up those actions. A footballer needs to think about kicking the ball low and hard to the left of the goalkeeper, but not to overthink the mechanics of the precise small movements of legs and feet that produce that outcome. If he or she does start this sort of thought process, it very often leads to a poorer shot. What’s needed is a kind of automatic response to the situation. Perhaps something similar is going on in our life. Those people who start detailed programs of self-development in various dimensions, focusing on diet, habits, exercise, mental activity, work output, and so on, are like the footballer thinking through the small muscle movements. Perhaps their well-meaning self-reflection on their own development and how they want to achieve it, is the very thing that will make a high level of development forever unobtainable for them. 12.What may cause an opportunity cost? A.Spending time on worthy activities. B.Joining in social meetings actively. C.Getting stuck in much self-reflection. D.Doing physical exercises efficiently. 13.Why does the author mention David’s observations? A.To praise a wise philosopher. B.To teach readers football skills. C.To cite a case of overthinking. D.To argue for reflective thinking. 14.What does the author suggest readers do to achieve their goals? A.Make a comprehensive plan. B.Adopt a direct approach. C.Think carefully before action. D.Attach importance to details. 15.What is a suitable title for this text? A.The Risk of Overthinking B.The Key to Well-being C.The Way to Think Reflectively D.The Method to Develop Yourself 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)(2025·海南省高三上学期天一联考(二模)) A low-carbon lifestyle is one that aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and minimize the impact of human activities on the climate. 16 , such as using renewable energy, eating less meat, traveling by public transport, recycling, and planting trees. B (2025·山东省日照市联考) My legs were starting to ache from standing by my research poster for nearly ten hours. At 15, I was anxiously awaiting the possibility to speak to my biggest role model, J. Michael Bishop, MD.I’d learnt from other students who had previously participated in the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) that the Nobel laureate walks around from poster to poster to speak with students during the Public Showcase Day. J. Michael Bishop, MD, who was the winner of the 1989 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, talked about his childhood and how he had hardly been exposed to science. Throughout his college education, he never imagined himself becoming a scientist. He had even been denied entry into countless labs due to a lack of prior experience. He had an ambition to become a scientist, but lacked the guidance to visualize his future career. Over time, he developed relationships with instructors who believed in him. More importantly, he learned how to believe in himself. I found inspiration in Dr. Bishop’s goal of becoming a scientist and his willingness to be open and原创精品资源学科网独家享有版权,侵权必究! 9 / 15 学学科科网网(((北北北京京京)股))份股股有份份限有有公限限司公公司司vulnerable — he often gave talks about his own self-doubt. Dr. Bishop is a role model for anyone who, like me, comes from an unconventional background, inspiring us to persevere and work through self-doubt to pursue a career in science. When Dr. Bishop was just inches away from the posters nearest to mine, I ran up to my role model and asked him to come to my poster even if I wasn’t on his list. He was kind enough to spend at least an hour with me, discussing my research and ultimate goal to pursue a PhD. Seven years after meeting Dr. Bishop, I had the privilege of pursuing a PhD in cancer biology, and my path continues to mirror his. I am devoting my graduate and scientific career to instructing students from underrepresented backgrounds through teaching, guiding them through their own research projects, and openly sharing my own story, just as Dr. Bishop does. 4.Why did the author stand by her research poster so long? A.To perfect her research poster. B.To conduct her scientific research. C.To participate in the event of ISEF. D.To seek chance to talk to Dr. Bishop. 5.What is paragraph 2 mainly about? A.Dr. Bishop’s plan for his future career. B.Dr. Bishop’s early exposure to science. C.Dr. Bishop’s experience in experiments. D.Dr. Bishop’s hard path to turning scientist. 6.Why did the author consider Dr. Bishop her role model? A.He overcame self-doubt to achieve his goal. B.He was willing to talk about his vulnerability. C.He worked hard and had strong self-discipline. D.He was a success with a conventional background. 7.What can we infer from the last paragraph? A.The author feels proud of her extraordinary students. B.The author follows Dr. Bishop's example to help her students.原创精品资源学科网独家享有版权,侵权必究! 10 / 15 学科网((北北京京))股股份份有有限限公公司司C.Teachers sharing their own story impress their students deeply. D.Dr. Bishop has a great impact on the author's research methods. C (2025·河南省名校大联考高三期末) Elephants, the largest land mammals on the planet, are magnificent creatures and tourists rush to African countries to see them. Due to very successful conservation efforts, the African elephant population in countries like Kenya is growing. In the country’s popular Tsavo National Park, elephant numbers went from around 6,000 to almost 15,000 in 2021. While this is great news for conservationists, it’s not seen that way by farmers who live in between two parts of the park. The human population has also expanded and this means that it affects elephants’ feeding and migration areas. This has led to conflicts between humans and elephants, sometimes resulting in elephant deaths. Now a new solution using honeybees has been found to keep the elephants away from farms. This unlikely solution is part of a long-running project from the Save the Elephants organization. The sound of African honeybees prevents elephants. Now yellow-painted beehive (蜂巢 ) fences protect some of the local plots. The project is supporting 40 farmers whose crops are protected by 15 hives. Each of the hives is strung on a wire a few meters off the ground. This protects them from insects and allows them to shake if they are disturbed by an elephant, which starts the bees making sounds. This scares the elephant away. A nine-year study monitored 26 farms that were protected by the beehive fences in two villages near the park. During the peak growing seasons — November to January from 2014 to 2020 — 3,027 elephants approached the fences and most were prevented. During the drought of 2017, which reduced the number of bees in the hives by 75 percent, elephants were still prevented 76 percent of the time. Save the Elephants is now promoting beehive fences in 15 countries in Africa and Asia. But besides preventing elephants, the beehive fences can provide other benefits to communities. Bees provide pollination (授粉) services which can increase crop production and honey from the hives that farmers can sell to increase their income. While this solution isn’t perfect, and is subject to the negative effects of climate change and drought, it does show that elephants and humans can share the land without conflicts. 8.What can be known from the first two paragraphs? Geographers have made a prediction that within the future eighty years, current world climate zones could shift and chances are that some could completely disappear. Polar regions will get colder while tropical regions will get even hotter, forcing animals to migrate north. Climate changes like these could lead to the spread of diseases. Tropical storms and hurricanes will not only increase in numbers but in intensity as well. If the changes come too quickly, animal and plant species may not be able to adapt fast enough and could face extinction.原创精品资源学科网独家享有版权,侵权必究! 12 / 15 学科网((北北京京))股股份份有有限限公公司司According to Science Daily, a new study predicts that by the year 2100, many of today’s familiar climates will be replaced by climates unknown in today’s world. It is urgent that we reduce the risks of these far-reaching consequences for the sake of the whole world. The planet earth itself has been showing signs of change, which concerns the scientific community deeply. Egypt was hit in 2009 with a major earthquake and Haiti was devastated in 2010 by yet another massive earthquake. Within just the last few months, new reports from around the world have been coming in and most agree that our climate situation is much worse than previously expected. At this point, it doesn’t matter what’s causing it, but rather, what can be done about it. What’s more, our world is getting more and more unstable every year. There has been war and threat of war everywhere. Natural disasters are becoming more frequent and serious. However, astronomical observations have been showing signs that other planets are experiencing global warming as well as our own and some scientists believe there may be some connection behind such mysterious phenomena.
