We all know it’s polite to follow local customs when we’re in a new place. So when you have Western food
with others, it’s good to do as Western people do. Here are some things that you may need to know about eating
together in the West.
During the meal, you may be invited to serve yourself by someone who says, “Help yourself.” Or you will
be served by someone who asks, “Would you like some...?” You can take it and say, “Thank you.” If you are given
something you do not like, you can just say, for example, “I’m sorry. I don’t eat meat.” or “I don’t eat fish.” Don’t
worry. No one will be cross. If you are offered more food but can’t eat any more, just say, “No, thanks. It was
delicious, but I’ve had enough.”
Remember that it is polite to say that you enjoy every dish when it is served, and that you have enjoyed the
food at the end of a meal.
It is sometimes difficult to know when the meal is over. If you are invited to dinner by Western friends, you
will be expected to stay and talk around the dinner table long after the last dish is served, and it is not polite if you
leave as soon as you finish eating.
The rule is: Watch the other people. Do as they do.
1.What does the underlined word “cross” probably mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Angry. B.Serious. C.Shy. D.Satisfied.
2.Which behaviour is polite while eating in the West?
A.Saying you enjoy every dish. B.Leaving as soon as you finish eating.
C.Keeping silent after the last dish. D.Watching others eat all the time.
3.Who may the text be written for?A.Romans. B.Westerners. C.Chinese. D.Americans.
4.How is the text organized? (①=Paragraph 1, ...)
A. B. C. D.
5.What is the main purpose of the text?

habits.

Many people love travelling to different countries, but if you plan to go abroad, you should know how to
behave in different situations around the world. Most travellers enjoy meeting new people, but sometimes you can be rude without saying anything. In
Russia, you should never shake hands in a doorway, and if you’re travelling in some European countries, people
usually stand quite close to each other when they talk, but in countries like the US, you need to give people more
personal space. Also, it’s rude to interrupt Japanese people while they are talking to you. You must wait until they
finish before you start speaking.
In restaurants in China, you can leave a bit of food on your plate, and it’s OK to start smoking before other
people finish eating, which you mustn’t do in the UK. When in India, remember to eat with your right hand. Also,
avoid leaving empty bottles on the dinner table in Russia—that’s bad luck.
When you’re travelling in Asia, if someone invites you to his or her home, don’t forget to take off your
shoes when you arrive. And if you visit an Arab family’s home, don’t admire anything valuable because your host
will feel he should give it to you as a present.

3.What should you do when visiting an Arab family’s home?
A.Take off your shoes. B.Leave some food on the plate.
C.Don’t admire valuable things. D.Eat with your right hand.
4.What does the writer want to tell us?
A.Practice makes perfect. B.Where there is a will, there is a way.
C.When in Rome, do as the Romans do. D.Actions speak louder than words.
5.Where is this passage most probably from?
A.A travel guide.B.A science report. C.A storybook. D.A dictionary.

like the Indians. It was fun!
The Indian family told us many interesting customs. They said that in India, it’s not rude to talk with your
hands when eating. Also, they don’t like to waste food, so we should finish all the food on our plates.

China is a nation of etiquette (礼仪). Chinese people are among the most hospitable people in the world. If
foreigners visit a Chinese family, they would be surprised at the warmth that they would receive as guests.
When you visit a Chinese family, the host usually makes tea for you. Then he will serve you snacks like
biscuits or candy. Someone in the family will also talk with you, never letting you feel lonely.
At the same time, other family members will prepare a meal for you. Chinese people treat their guests with
a big meal. They always prepare more food than the guests can eat. At the table, the guests must be the first to eat.
Perhaps one of the things that surprises a Western guest most is that some Chinese hosts like to pick up food for
visitors, which won’t happen at Western tables. The Chinese families go out of their way to make you feel at
home. As you finish eating, the host usually says, “It seems that you didn’t eat much. Please have more.”

重难语篇练习
When traveling or communicating with people from other countries, understanding cultural etiquette is
essential to avoid misunderstandings and show respect. Here are some key etiquette tips from different cultures.
In Japan, etiquette is highly valued in daily life. When greeting someone, people usually bow instead ofshaking hands. The depth and duration of the bow depend on the relationship and situation—more formal
occasions require a deeper and longer bow. It’s also polite to remove your shoes when entering someone’s home
or certain traditional buildings. Additionally, pointing with your finger is considered rude; instead, you can gesture
with an open hand.
In India, family and religion play important roles in culture. When meeting someone for the first time,
joining your hands together (known as “namaste”) and nodding slightly is a common and respectful greeting. It’s
important to avoid touching people’s heads, as the head is considered the most sacred part of the body. Also,
eating with your left hand is frowned upon, as the left hand is believed to be unclean.
In France, people value politeness and formality in social interactions. Greeting with a handshake is
common, and close friends or family members may kiss each other on the cheeks (usually twice, starting with the
left cheek). It’s important to address people by their titles (such as “Monsieur” for men and “Madame” for
women) unless invited to use their first names. When dining, it’s rude to start eating before the host says “bon
appétit”.
In Saudi Arabia, Islamic culture influences many aspects of daily life. Greetings are warm and often
involve asking about the other person’s family and health. Men usually shake hands with other men, but physical
contact between men and women who are not relatives is generally avoided. It’s important to dress modestly,
especially for women, who should cover their shoulders and knees in public. Also, avoid eating, drinking, or
smoking in public during Ramadan.
By learning and respecting these cultural etiquette rules, we can build better relationships with people from
different backgrounds and enjoy a more harmonious cross-cultural experience.
1.How do people usually greet each other in Japan?
A.By shaking hands. B.By bowing.
C.By joining hands and nodding. D.By kissing on the cheeks.

3.How many times do close friends usually kiss each other on the cheeks in France?
A.Once. B.Twice. C.Three times. D.Four times.
4.What should women do when in public in Saudi Arabia?
A.Dress modestly and cover shoulders and knees.
B.Shake hands with all men they meet.

①In our fast-changing world, social customs are not staying the same. What people are supposed to do in
different situations has been evolving (演变). This is especially clear in greetings, which are the first step in social
communication.
②Traditionally, customs were quite strict. In many Western cultures like the United States, people used to
be supposed to shake hands in formal meetings. For friends, a simple “hello” was often enough. In China, the
rules were different. People, especially the younger ones, were supposed to show clear respect to the elders. They
would often nod slightly or bow their heads a little. Physical touch was less common than in the West.
③However, things are changing quickly. Nowadays, the handshake is still common in the West for
business, but among friends, hugs are often acceptable. In modern China, while respectful nods are still polite,
handshakes have become very common in cities and workplaces. Young people usually use casual “Hi” or “Hello”in daily life.
④The most noticeable change among young people is the rise of the “fist bump (碰拳).” It is now seen as a
cool, quick, and friendly greeting among teenagers worldwide. It is less formal than a handshake and helps people
feel connected quickly. ______
⑤Why are these changes happening? People’s lives are busier and faster, so greetings have become
quicker. The old strict rules sometimes feel too slow or formal for today’s lifestyle. The key point now is not just
following one strict rule, but showing respect makes everyone feel comfortable.
⑥It is important to understand the changes in today’s modern, connected world. Therefore, let’s keep an
open mind and never stop learning.
