The FIFAWorld CupTrophy (奖杯)is arguably one of the most iconic prizes in
the sporting world. So far, two different trophies have been used in the history of the
FIFAWorldCups.
The Jules Rimet Trophy was the first trophy awarded to the winners of the FIFA
World Cups. Initially, the old trophy was originally named “Victory”. However, this
trophy was renamed “the Jules Rimet Trophy” in 1946. This change was made to
honor former FIFApresident Jules Rimet, who voted to organize the first FIFAWorld
Cup in 1930. French sculptor Abel Lafleur designed the trophy in 1930. The trophy
was 14 inches in height and weighed 8.4 pounds. It was comprised of a winged
representation of Nike, the Greek Goddess ofVictory and was inspired by the Nike of
Samothrace statue.
Uruguay became the first champion and kept the trophy in 1930. The trophy was
eventually retired when Brazil won the World Cup final for the third time in 1970.
Following their success in Mexico, Brazil was allowed to keep the trophy
permanently. However, the original trophy was stolen for a second time in 1983. It
2was never recovered, and it was claimed that it had been melted down into gold
bars. Following the retirement of the Jules Rimet Trophy, FIFA needed a new cup.
Eventually,Italian artist Silvio Gazzaniga’s design was selected as thenewWorld Cup
trophy.
The modern FIFA World Cup trophy describes two human figures holding the
earth on top of their heads. The base of the trophy has “FIFAWorld Cup” engraved
(刻). Furthermore, following every World Cup, the name of the winning team and
the winning year is also engraved at the base. The trophy weighs 13.61 pounds.
Unlike the Jules Rimet Trophy, the winning nations and future winners don’t get to
hold the original trophy anymore. The new regulations state that it remains in FIFA’s
possession. Instead, winners are given a gold-plated bronze replica(青铜复制品)
provided by FIFA. West Germany was the first nation to lift the modern World Cup
trophy in 1974.
The new trophy can hold up to seventeen names and years and is likely to be
retired following the2038WorldCup.

Ken Hanes, owner ofAGL Drone (无人机) Services, was driving from Colorado
Springs to Denver when he turned on the radio and learned that the Mayor of Denver
made an order closing down bars and restaurants to fight the spread of COVID-19. He
then learned that Colorado Springs had declared a state of emergency and that the
governor had ordered statewide closures to limitgroup gatherings.
“Before COVID-19, I’d never heard of social distancing, but it’s now part of my
daily vocabulary and has found a place in my drone business” Hanes says. “I realized
on that drive to Denver that I practice social distancing every day in my business but
didn’t realize it. My job allows me the unique opportunity to provide information to
my clients with absolutely no face-to-face interaction. I have the ability to travel to a
location and fly the drone to collect the information I need without ever interfacing
with anyone, and the electronic deliverables I provide allow unlimited distribution to
interested parties anywhere in theworld.”
Hanes reflects on what many in the commercial drone industry have realized —
drones are ideal for facilitating social distancing and have significant potential to
assist with the public safety and economic impacts of COVID-19. As explained by
Luke Fox, founder and CEO of WhiteFox Drone Technologies, “Drones are critical in
the fight against COVID-19. This technology can work as a force multiplier to ensure
people get medical supplies, food, and other life-saving tasks all while minimizing
potentially infectious (感染的) human contact. As drones continue to take to the sky,
WhiteFox isworking tocreate asafe, trusted, andsecure airspace.”
“There are many use cases for drones that can aid the nation from delivering test
kits to areas in need to delivering medical goods toquarantined individuals, and much
more. We provide essential services that can mitigate the need for extensive human
interaction and can speed up logistics (后勤保障), could help prevent the spread of
the disease and enhance efficiencies as personnel are forced to stay home,” Hanes
says.
428.Whatis thetheme ofthetext?
A.The necessity ofpracticing social distancing.
B.Theadvantages ofdrones in fighting COVID-19.
C.Thegovernment measures infighting COVID-19.
D.The opportunityfor thecommercial drone industry.
29.What’s special about Hanes’s job?
A. It is limited to acertain location.
B. It requires moretimefor businesstravel.
C. It is done withoutface-to-face interaction.
D. It is mainlyfor delivering medical supplies.
30.Howdoes Luke Fox feel about thefuture ofWhiteFox?
A. Doubtful. B.Anxious. C. Confident. D. Hopeless.
31.What does theunderlined word “mitigate” inthe lastparagraph probably mean?

Street lights can change the amount and quality of sleep that pigeons and magpies
get at night, affecting their energy in themorning.
“One of the most common and well-documented things light pollution seems to
do is cause animals, particularly birds, to change the timing of their behavior,” said
AnneAulsebrook, a researcherwith theUniversity ofMelbourne.
Aulsebrook said she chose pigeons because so much is already known about their
sleep compared to other birds’, and plenty of them are in captivity (圈养) to study.
They set up experiments exposing the birds to darkness one night, switching on the
lights the next and turning them off the following night. “We expected to see them
sleep more on the first night, less when the lights are on and then recover some of the
sleep they lost thenextnight,”she said.
Using sensors that recorded brain and muscle activity, the team found that the
pigeons slept about 10 hours with the lights off. With the lights on, their sleep
dropped to about six hours. Quality of sleep was also affected. The pigeons didn’t
seem to recover from the loss of rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep the night before,
5slept less intensely the following night and woke up more often. Comparing amber
(琥珀色) light to white light, the team found the tone made no difference in sleep
patterns.
Then, theresearchers wanted to see if theywould see the samepatterns in another
species, so they looked at magpies. Magpies’ sleep was also affected by both white
and amber light; they found, but the birds slept twice as muchin amber light. Magpies
also seemed to recover all of their non-REM sleep, but not their REM sleep—the
oppositeofthefindings from thepigeon experiment.
Such species-specific results can make managing for light pollution difficult,
Aulsebrook said, but the results did have one thing in common: amber light was never
more harmful. “If we had to choose, I’d still go with warmer, amber colors,” she said.
“The othersimplersolutionis to turn thelights off.”
32.What didAulsebrook’s team want to learn through their experiments?
A.The cause ofbirds’non-REM sleep.
B.Thechange of pigeons’sleep patterns.
C.Thedesign of energy-efficient street lights.
D.The effects of light pollutiononbirds’behavior.
33.What doweknowabout theREM sleep?
A. It’s akind ofdeep sleep. B. It’s a kindofpoor-quality sleep.
C. It causes birds tolosetheir energy. D. It happens onlyto birds in captivity
34.Howdid themagpies behave intheexperiments?
A.They stayed awake withthe lights on.
B.They recovered all oftheir REMsleep.
C.They slept much longer in amberlight.
D.They were not affected bythelights at all.
35.What canbea suitabletitleforthetext?
A. Street lights drive thebirds crazy.

10Village life is totally different from that in the city. I brought up in a small village
butI can remember so many facts about village lifeonwinter mornings.
In the village, people, which fields need to be looked after, are all hard-working.
Too much cold and fog can make our work a little bit of hard. They wake up early in
the morning and went to their fields, drove their cows. Winter mornings are special
for kids as well. This time is perfectly for playing games. As the child, I would go out

wintermornings ever since.
