But songbirds often push their young out long before it's actually time for them to spread their wings and fly, research from the University of Illinois finds. “From what we can tell, instead of physically pushing their young out, bird parents do this by decreasing the amount of food they give them to force them out through hunger, and by communicating with them directly to encourage them to leave,” says lead author Todd Jones, a doctoral student in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois. The study shows that the young birds who were forced to leave early were less likely to survive than those that stayed in the nest. “Birds that leave the nest at a younger age have less developed wings, and as a result often die before adulthood. Those that stay home longer can fly away when they finally leave and are more likely to survive,” says Jones. Then why would songbirds push out their babies before they can fly? “Rather than leaving all their eggs (or in this case young birds) in one basket, bird parents can get their young to leave the nest earlier and spatially separate all the young birds so that the probability of all their young being eaten becomes nearly zero,” Jones says. For the young birds that want to stick around, being forced out of their nest might seem like a cruel parental tactic. With no other choices, the little birds have to begin making their own way in the world, with the hope that one day they'll do the same thing to their own young. “Our study suggests this tactic finally improves parental fitness and is likely passed on from generation to generation, Jones says. “Birds face many challenges in our changing world, and it is important that we understand tactics, such as the one mentioned in our study, that birds may use to respond to such challenges so that we may protect these birds.” 24.What would songbirds do to get their young out of the nest? A.Show no care to them. B.Physically push them out. C.Attract them out with songs. D.Stop giving them enough food. 25.What can we learn about the young birds forced out of the nest? A.They will try to find another nest. B.They will learn to fly very quickly. C.They will be willing to come back. D.They will have less chance of survival. 26.Why do songbirds make their young leave before they are ready? A.To lead an easy life themselves. B.To make space for their reproduction. C.To avoid losing all their young to enemies. D.To encourage independence in their young. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司27.What does the underlined phrase "the same thing" in paragraph 5 refer to? A.Protecting young birds from dangers. B.Forcing young birds out of the nest early. C.Punishing young birds if they do something wrong. D.Letting young birds stay in the nest until they grow up. C In the late 1990s, a scientist named Mark Blumberg stood in a lab at the University of Iowa watching a few sleeping newlyborn rats. He found that the baby rats kept making small, sharp movements in their sleep, and that their closed eyes moved from side to side in a phenomenon known as rapid eye movement (REM). Blumberg knew that the rats were fine, because he knew people do the same during REM sleep. And scientists have long had an explanation for the twitches (抽动) and REM: They are dreaming about their waking life. However, as he dug deeper, he wondered why adult rats spend only about two hours of each night in REM sleep, while baby rats spend an unusual amount of time in REM, often sleeping for sixteen hours a day and dreaming for eight. “If dreams are hints of waking life, adult rats who have more experiences should spend more time in REM sleep. Why do baby rats, whose eyes are still shut, spend so much time in REM sleep when they have too little to dream about?” he wondered. “Why do their eyes, their legs, tails and whiskers move hundreds of thousands of times during their sleep?” In the end, Blumberg concluded that it might be the other way around — perhaps the movements were sending signals to the brain to help it learn about the body. “You wouldn’t think that the body is something a brain needs to learn,” he wrote in a paper. “But we aren’t born with maps of our bodies. We can’t be, because our bodies change by the day. But in waking life, we cannot move only a single muscle. Even the simplest act of swallowing (吞咽) employs more than thirty pairs of nerves and muscles working together. Our small and sharp movements in sleep, by contrast, are exact and precise: They involve muscles one at a time. In other words, such movements allow the muscles and nerves to form one-to-one connections that otherwise would be impossible. It’s a process that’s most important for the brain to learn about the body as we grow, suffer injuries and learn new skills. 28.What was the previous explanation for REM? A.It was just an outward sign of dreams. B.It showed the difficulty in sleeping. C.It was an indicator of terrible dreams.D.It only occured to sleeping baby rats. 29.What can be learned from paragraph 2? A.Baby rats have to spend all night in REM sleep. B.REM sleep just accounts for part of the sleeping time. C.It is unnecessary for baby rats to sleep 16 hours a day. D.It is not enough for adults to have two hours of REM sleep. 30.What is a feature of the movements in REM sleep according to Mark Blumberg? A.They teach the brain new skills and heal injuries. B.Muscles have to work together to start the movements. C.Each of them just involves a muscle and a nerve at a time. D.They are less exact and precise than our daily movements. 31.What is the text mainly about? A.The importance of REM sleep. B.The latest discoveries about dreaming. C.The relationship between dreams and waking life. D.A different explanation for the twitches during sleep. 第二节(共5小题, 每小题2. 5分, 共12. 5分) 阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Travelling with friends can be an amazing experience where you could make lifelong memories or it could ruin your friendship. 32 Here are some rules you should follow to make sure your next trip with friends goes as smoothly as possible. 33 Sure, you and your friends probably have some similar interests, but that’s not always the case. Sharing the final moments with a person we love can be a small relief in a truly difficult situation. This story was first told on an airline customer service website. As you may know, airlines compete with each other to see who has the best on-time departure record, and airline employees are evaluated based on their ability to keep a schedule. When Kerry Drake got on his United Airlines flight, the mother who he was going to see was facing her final hours. To add an extra layer of extreme sadness, Drake knew that if he missed his connecting flight, he wouldn’t getto the hospital in time to say goodbye to his mother. On that very morning, Drake got the news that his mother, who had been ill for years and had been especially sick over the last four months, was dying. To get to his mother in Lubbock, Texas, the San Francisco resident booked a United Airlines flight, with only 40 minutes between connecting flights in Houston. After his first flight got delayed, Drake thought he would miss his connecting flight to Lubbock, the last one of the day. He started crying on the plane, obviously upset and worried. The flight attendants (空乘人员) soon noticed his state and quickly found out what was wrong. They brought tissues for his tears, said they would do what they could to help, and most importantly, got his connecting flight information to the captain. Within minutes, Drake’s problem was received and passed on to the captain, who radioed ahead about this situation to Drake’s next flight. The Lubbock crew (机组人员) responded by delaying the flight’s departure to make sure he got on the plane. When he got off the airport train and was running toward the gate, about 20 meters away, Drake heard the gate attendant say, “Mr. Drake, we’ve been expecting you.” Until that point, Drake had been rushing to make the flight. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。 Finally, Drake sat on that second airplane._______________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________________ He made it to the hospital in time to see his mother.________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________________ 学科网(北京)股份有限公司
