I had always been fascinated by the use of natural treatments in healthcare. So, when I came across a local
clinic that offered courses in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) several months ago, I immediately signed up for
a one-year course.
On the first day of class, I was looking forward to what I was going to learn. As the instructor explained the
procedure, I felt a little disturbed by the thought of needles being stuck into my skin. However, I was determined to
overcome my fear. Acupuncturist uses hair-thin needles to find specific areas on the body to treat pain or tension
the body may be experiencing, known to help with depression, insomnia (失眠) and anxiety. The instructor told us
that an acupuncturist might request patients to provide more information about their health, how to treat them, and
what points are most appropriate for them. We were taught how to examine a patient’s tongue and pulse to gatherevidence of any imbalances in the body. He showed us how to adjust the needle’s depth, as different organs
required different depths. The needles were only a few millimetre thick and made of stainless steel, so they were
solid and easy to switch out.
In class, we also learned about the phenomenon of acupuncture anesthesia (麻醉) where patients could
undergo surgery without conventional anesthesia using only acupuncture. As we progressed through the course, we
learned about herbs and their uses. We also discussed the effects of substances such as alcohol, tobacco, and drugs
on the body and how they could lead to severe anxiety and abuse.
TCM dates back to ancient China, and it is a widespread practice today. It is fascinating to learn about the
symbolism behind each organ and how they relate to different emotions and imbalances in the body. After a year of
wrestling with the course, I have now graduated and put everything in place. Without doubt, it has been one of the
most fulfilling experiences in my life.
24.What made the author decide to sign up for a TCM course?
A.His worries about health problems. B.His interest in natural treatments.
C.An accidental visit to a local clinic. D.The increasing knowledge of TCM.
25.What did the instructor mainly teach in the first class?
A.The development of acupuncture. B.The way to perform acupuncture.
C.The requirement for an acupuncture. D.The various tools used in acupuncture.
26.How does the author feel about acupuncture after graduating from the course?
A.Easy. B.Complicated. C.Advanced. D.Worthy.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.An encounter with TCM B.A modern change in TCM
C.A course to improve my fitness D.A special acupuncture treatment

Most glitter(小发光物品), which is made up of tiny pieces of plastic, is a huge danger to the environment.
“Everyone talks about the mountain of plastic floating in the ocean. You can grab empty bottles from the water, but
with tiny pieces, it’s impossible,” says Victor Alvarez, a chemical engineer who sells an eco-friendly alternative to
glitter.
In the early 2,000s, Alvarez worked for Mercedes-Benz in Germany, where he became fond of any technology
that protected the environment. A few years after leaving Mercedes-Benz, he founded Blue Sun International in
Miami, which makes specialty ingredients for the skin and hair care industries.Glitter is a popular ingredient in cosmetics, such as eye shadows and lipsticks. So Alvarez began researching
an alternative that didn’t contain plastic to make his products safer for the environment. That’s when he came
across Ronald Britton Ltd., a company which had developed a plastic-free, biodegradable product called Bioglitter.
It is made from regenerative cellulose(纤维素) sourced from hardwoods, primarily eucalyptus(桉树). Alvarez
worked with the company to become the first retailer to sell Bioglitter in America. In 2018, he formed Today Glitter
in order to sell the biodegradable glitter directly to consumers through its website.
Today Glitter sells two kinds of biodegradable glitter Bioglitter Sparkle and Bioglitter Pure. Both are almost
plastic-free and can biodegrade in a short time. Meanwhile, they are as shiny as regular glitter. All these products
are third-party tested by TÜV, an international organization that provides testing and certification for compostable
(可降解的) and biodegradable products.
Despite its benefits, the hardwoods needed to make biodegradable glitter cause it to cost about twice as much
as conventional glitter. A small glass container that contains just 6 grams of Bioglitter costs $10, while the same
amount of regular glitter could cost at least half that amount. Alvarez expects the price will come down over time.
He also expects the company’s sales to cross $1 million next year. But more importantly, Alvarez says, his main
goal is to effect a meaningful change.
28.What do we know about Bioglitter?
A.It is a plastic-free ingredient for eye shadows.
B.It will soon be on sale in the American market.
C.It is very difficult to break down in the wild.
D.It was invented by Blue Sun International.
29.Why does the author mention TÜV in the text?
A.To show Bioglitter Sparkle and Bioglitter Pure are popular.
B.To stress it provides a broad range of testing services.
C.To prove Today Glitter’s products are eco-friendly.
D.To explain many plastic products are low-quality.
30.What is the problem faced by Today Glitter at present?
A.The complex process of making glitter. B.How to expand its overseas market.
C.How to attract potential investors. D.The high cost of raw materials.

As Frans de Waal, a primatologist (灵长动物学家), recognizes, a better way to think about other creatureswould be to ask ourselves how different species have developed different kinds of minds to solve different adaptive
problems. Surely the important question is not whether animals can do the same things humans can, but how those
animals solve the cognitive (认知的) problems they face, like how to imitate the sea floor. Children and some
animals are so interesting not because they are smart like us, but because they are smart in ways we haven’t even
considered.
Sometimes studying children’s ways of knowing can cast light on adult-human cognition. Children’s pretend
play may help us understand our adult taste for fiction. De Waal’s research provides another interesting example.
We human beings tend to think that our social relationships are rooted in our perceptions, beliefs, and desires, and
our understanding of the perceptions, beliefs, and desires of others—what psychologists call our “theory of mind.”
In the 80s and 90s, developmental psychologists showed that pre-schoolers and even infants understand minds apart
from their own. But it was hard to show that other animals did the same. “Theory of mind” became a candidate for
the special, uniquely human trick.
Yet de Waal’s studies show that chimps (黑猩猩) possess a remarkably developed political intelligence—they
are much interested in figuring out social relationships. It turns out, as de Waal describes, that chimps do infer
something about what other chimps see. But experimental studies also suggest that this happens only in a
competitive political context. The evolutionary anthropologist (人类学家) Brain Hare and his colleagues gave a
junior chimp a choice between pieces of food that a dominant chimp had seen hidden and other pieces it had not
seen hidden. The junior chimp, who watched all the hiding, stayed away from the food the dominant chimp had
seen, but took the food it hadn’t seen.
Anyone who has gone to an academic conference will recognize that we may be in the same situation. We may
say that we sign up because we’re eager to find out what other human beings think, but we’re just as interested in
who’s on top. Many of the political judgments we make there don’t have much to do with our theory of mind. We
may show our respect to a famous professor even if we have no respect for his ideas.
Until recently, however, there wasn’t much research into how humans develop and employ this kind of
political knowledge. It may be that we understand the social world in terms of dominance, like chimps, but we’re
just not usually as politically motivated as they are. Instead of asking whether we have a better everyday theory of
mind, we might wonder whether they have a better everyday theory of politics.
31.According to the first paragraph, which of the following shows that an animal is smart?
A.It can behave like a human kid.
B.It can imitate what human beings do.C.It can find a solution to its own problem.
D.It can figure out those adaptive problems.
32.Which of the following statements best illustrates our “theory of mind”?
A.We talk with infants in a way that they can fully understand.
B.We make guesses at what others think while interacting with them.
C.We hide our emotions when we try establishing contact with a stranger.
D.We try to understand how kids’ pretend play affects our taste for fiction.
33.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Neither human nor animals display their preference for dominance.
B.Animals living in a competitive political context are smarter.
C.Both humans and some animals have political intelligence.
D.Humans are more interested in who’s on top than animals.
34.By the underlined sentence in the last paragraph, the writer means that ________.
A.we know little about how chimps are politically motivated
B.our political knowledge doesn’t always determine how we behave
C.our theory of mind might enable us to understand our theory of politics
D.more research should be conducted to understand animals’ social world
第二节(共5小题; 每小题2分, 共10分)
根据短文内容, 从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
When you go to concerts, you expect your favorite musician to perform amazingly on stage. But you may have
noticed something curious that most musicians don’t just play with their fingers. They also involve body
movements that fit the song’s beat or dance following the music. 35 The facial expressions musicians
show when playing may seem strange or crazy to an outsider, but all that pulling faces might actually serve a
purpose.
Firstly, playing a musical instrument usually requires intense focus and concentration. 36 Their
facial expressions can be a demonstration of the intense emotions and physical effort that go hand-in-hand with
musical performance. They’re often subconscious-in fact, many of us will pull strange faces when we’re deeply
involved in an activity we care about.
37 Musicians have a strong emotional connection with the music they perform. They often use their
facial expressions to express the mood and interpretation of the music, which creates a more engaging musical
experience. While facial expressions may not directly make someone a better musician, they might contribute to theoverall artistry of the music.
Performing live music is a rather stressful experience, so it could be that the performer is expressing those
nerves through their face-biting the bottom lip, for example. Luckily, nerves will often go away soon after a
musician starts performing. 38
The facial expressions obviously to some extent express the performer’s inner world. Another interesting thing
is that making facial expressions can have a physiological impact on the musician’s performance. Some research
suggests that certain facial movements can activate specific muscles and improve muscle harmonization. 39
However, it’s important to note that this relationship is still not well understood, and the extent to which facial
expressions directly impact musical competence is a subject of ongoing investigation.
A.When you’re really focused, you don’t care about the outside world.
B.Among them the part of the body that best exhibits this is obviously the face.
C.They likely won’t be the main cause for those strange faces throughout a performance.
D.Such effects are particularly helpful in controlling muscles when playing an instrument.
E.Facial expressions can also help musicians communicate emotions and artistic expression.
F.Musicians are often overcome with emotion from the music itself or the reaction of the crowd.
G.Musicians often enter a state of “flow”, where they become completely absorbed in the music they’re
creating.

阅读下面短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
When I was in my second year in senior high school, I found a 16-dollar-an-hour part-time job at Lakewood
Pizza. Like many teens, I longed to earn income as well as add experience for the time to enter the workforce. Just
one week after I worked there, David Ross, the manager called me into his office. As the saying goes, “life isn’t
always a bed of roses”. My first job ended in failure. His reason was that I showed up late twice and took more
breaks than others.
“Oh, I’m a loser.” I thought to myself. I believed that thought was shared by my brothers, neither of whom had
ever been fired, and my mother, though she would never express it in those terms.
“I am too sad to do anything.” I complained to my father.
After listening to my words, he laughed. “It’s not funny; I’m a loser.” I said. “No, you’re not. This is a part of
growing up. You will be all right, my son,” he said, patting my shoulder. “Trust me. You are good enough.” I lookedinto my father’s eyes and I could see he really trusted me. And I believed him.
Since then, “Trust me. You are good enough.” are the only words I have repeated to myself. I have worked
hard to be a better person and cherished (珍惜) every moment I have got. Finally, I succeeded in entering a good
university. After graduation I found my dream job.
40.How much did the author earn at his part-time job?
41.Why did the author lose his first job?
42.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
After knowing the author’s failure, his father complained and laughed at him.
43.What can you learn from the author’s story? (In about 40 words)
