A
The Dead Sea might be the most famous saline body in the world, but it’s by no means the only one. Here, we uncover
some other salt lakes around the world.Dead Sea
The most famous of the lot, the Dead Sea—also known as the Salt Sea—is a natural place to start. It’s technically not a
sea at all, but a land salt lake. Its waters are mainly drawn from the Jordan River, and the high salinity (盐度) means no life
can survive here, so don’t expect any colorful fish. However, much amusement results from the sea’s buoyancy (浮力):
Bring some reading material to the waters and lie back—nature will do the rest.
Lake Assal
Surrounded by black volcano rocks, Lake Assal takes the title of being the lowest point in Africa. Vast salt fields mark its
edges; the lake has long been at the centre of the area’s salt trade, on which the region’s African locals still rely. Though the
area might not be suitable to live in, the waters are rich in minerals and related to health benefits.
Great Salt Lake
The biggest salt lake in the western hemisphere, and the one that gave Salt Lake City its name, the Great Salt Lake finds
its home in northern Utah. What makes the lake well-known is not only the lake’s blue and green waters and white-sand
beaches, but also Great Salt Lake State Park and Antelope Island State Park, both offering super hiking and biking trails,
and great long views.
Don Juan Pond
Don Juan Pond might not win any prizes for its beauty—at four inches deep, it’s little more than a pond, but it is worth
visiting. Its salinity content of almost 40 percent makes it one of the saltiest bodies of water on Earth, meaning it
doesn’t freeze even when Antarctic temperatures drop to -50℃. And with suggestions that water in a similar form could
exist on Mars, there’s more than one reason for scientists to study this fascinating dry, cold environment.
21.What can visitors probably do in Lake Assal?
A.Read books. B.Have a hike.
C.Enjoy small fishes. D.Take a bath in the lake.
22.What is the Great Salt Lake famous for?
A.Its great parks. B.Its scientific value.
C.Its highest salinity. D.Its specific location.
23.Which lake is valuable for space exploration?
A.Dead Sea. B.Lake Assal.
C.Don Juan Pond. D.Great Salt Lake.
B
As a reporter, I talk to strangers for a living and love the challenge of getting them to open up. Yet here’s a confession:
I’ve been married for eight happy years, but until six months ago, I could be the stereotypical inattentive husband.
It’s not that my wife and I never had pleasant conversations. But more often than I care to admit, I was just going
through the motions, nodding when I was supposed to. I was the guy who’d defensively snap (厉声说), “Of course I did!”
when my wife would ask, “JB, did you even hear what I just said?”
In January, I began to lose my voice repeatedly. Doctors told me I needed surgery, or else my throat would be
permanently damaged. Total silence would be required for the first few weeks of my recovery.
Two hours after the surgery, my eyes filled with tears as my two-year-old son stood by me looking puzzled because I
wouldn’t answer his questions. I wanted to talk but couldn’t.
But before I got home, I had settled into a Zen-like peace about my silence. Soon I noticed another “side effect”: As
my wife talked to me to keep up my spirits, I wasn’t just hearing her; I was listening to her.
Over the next few weeks, I found myself unwilling to miss a word she said. I began to hear a sweetness in her voice
that I hadn’t recalled for long. I found myself understanding her better on topics I’d previously dismissed as “things I justdon’t get as a guy”.
I also realized my toddler (学步的儿童) wasn’t just chattering nonstop but that he often had surprisingly thoughtful
things to say for his age.
Even while walking my dog in the woods near our home, I began hearing pleasant patterns in bird songs. The rustling
leaves sounded crisper to me. Before my surgery, I’d have spent those walks on my phone.
After several months, I was fully recovered. Now conversation in our house is better, but not because I’m talking more.
I’m just listening better and becoming less and less surprised that I like what I hear.

The Mogao Grottoes were a center of Buddhist life and some of the world’s great cultures for hundreds of years.
However, by the late Qing Dynasty they had been abandoned and nearly forgotten and many of the caves had become
damaged by the elements. Around 1900, with the discovery of a library of thousands of ancient documents, the caves
received new interest from Chinese and foreign researchers. Unfortunately, this resulted in tens of thousands of items from
the caves being taken to foreign museums
In the 1940s, many researchers and artists visited the area to study traditional Chinese art. Copies of some of the
artwork painted by respected artists such as Zhang Daqian and GuanShanyue helped people all over the country learn about
Dunhuang. These artists were also inspired by the artwork they saw in the caves and it began to influence their painting
styles. Others staved in the desert for much longer, Chang Shuhong stayed for the rest of his life — struggling to record the
cultural treasures and protect them from the weather. As a result of their efforts the Dunhuang Academy was formed to
protect and study the Mogao Grottoes.
In 1987, the Mogao Grottoes were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While the caves are open to the public,
access is now limited in order to protect the artwork. However, the caves can be seen online in digital form so that people
around the world can study and enjoy them.

In our information-driven society, shaping our worldview through the media is similar to forming an opinion about
someone solely based on a picture of their foot. While the media might not deliberately deceive us, it often fails to provide a
comprehensive view of reality.
Consequently, the question arises: Where, then, shall we get our information from if not from the media? Who can we
trust? How about experts- people who devote their working lives to understanding their chosen slice of the world? However,
even experts can fall prey to the allure of oversimplification, leading to the “single perspective instinct” that hampers (阻
碍) our ability to grasp the intricacies (错综复杂) of the world.
Simple ideas can be appealing because they offer a sense of understanding and certainty. And it is easy to take off
down a slippery slope, from one attention-grabbing simple idea to a feeling that this idea beautifully explains, or is the
beautiful solution for, lots of other things. The world becomes simple that way.
Yet, when we embrace a singular cause or solution for all problems, we risk oversimplifying complex issues. For
instance, championing the concept of equality may lead us to view all problems through the lens of inequality and see
resource distribution as the sole panacea. However, such rigidity prevents us from seeing the multidimensional nature of
challenges and hinders true comprehension of reality. This “single perspective instinct” ultimately clouds our judgment and
restricts our capacity to tackle complex issues effectively. Being always in favor of or always against any particular idea
makes you blind to information that doesn’t fit your perspective. This is usually a bad approach if you would like to
understand reality.
Instead, constantly test your favorite ideas for weaknesses. Be humble about the extent of your expertise. Be curious
about new information that doesn’t fit, and information from other fields. And rather than talking only to people who agree
with you, or collecting examples that fit your ideas, consult people who contradict you, disagree with you, and put forward
different ideas as a great resource for understanding the world. If this means you don’t have time to form so may opinions,so what?
Wouldn’t you rather have few opinions that are right than many that are wrong?
32.What does the underlined word “allure” in Para.2 probably mean?
A.Temptation. B.Tradition. C.Convenience. D.Consequence.
33.Why are simple ideas appealing according to the passage?
A.They meet people’s demand for high efficiency.
B.They generate a sense of complete understanding.
C.They are raised and supported by multiple experts.
D.They reflect the opinions of like-minded individuals.
34.What will the author probably agree with?
A.Simplifying matters releases energy for human brains.
B.Constant tests on our ideas help make up for our weakness.
C.A well-founded opinion counts more than many shallow ones.
D.People who disagree with us often have comprehensive views.
35.Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A.Embracing Disagreement: Refusing Overcomplexity
B.Simplifying Information: Enhancing Comprehension
C.Understanding Differences: Establishing Relationships
D.Navigating Complexity: Challenging Oversimplification

The slightest wrong choice of words can change someone’s mindset. Words are the most powerful weapon one can
ever have, whether it comes to writing or speaking. You don’t know which word will hurt someone and negatively impact
their mind. 36 Words that seem like a joke can seem deadly to others’ minds and life. A person should have control
over his tongue. 37 Spoken words can’t be taken back, so one should use them wisely. Speech should always be
constructive, not destructive. Grasping the points below will surely help you in improving your vocal quality.
Stay silent when you are angry. Never speak when you are in a bad mood because at that moment, your mind is going
through bad thoughts. If those bad thoughts get mixed with your words, it can spoil others’ mood. 38 That’s why
you should always be silent when you are angry. Whenever you are mad at something, first try to calm yourself.
39 A wise person always thinks twice before speaking. He frames a sentence wisely according to the situation
so that no one feels hurtful. Your words should be clear enough to describe the situation. Even the greatest lecturer prepares
a few terms before addressing a vast crowd. A good lecturer has the power to convince anyone through their wordplay.
Never judge a person until or unless he speaks. Don’t pre-judge someone before you have a conversation with that
person. Let him utter a word before you get to the conclusion of framing his image in your mind. 40

B.Think well before you speak.

Since the beginning of this school year, Josette Duran, coach of the local school girls’ volleyball team, has kept an
unusual morning routine at the request of her son, Dylan.
Every day, she packs him a lunch of two sandwiches, two bags of chips, two drinks, and two servings of fruit. At first,
Duran thought her son had perhaps hit another growth spurt (短时激增) and needed double the nutrition. She finally asked
him if he was getting enough to eat and received a surprising answer about why Dylan needed the extra food. “There are
some children lacking food at school. But it’s for Johnson alone. He only eats a fruit cup for lunch.”
It turned out that Dylan had befriended a classmate, Johnson, whose family was tightening their belts. Johnson’s single
mother had recently lost her job and was very low on cash, so she could no longer afford to buy school lunches. After
learning this, Duran was even more eager to help Johnson out and his mother because she herself could empathize (产生共
鸣) with their situation. That hit home to her because a few years ago, she and her son were homeless.
Her mind wandered back to the miserable scene when she was living in her car and she was washing her son in
bathrooms. And to make things worse, they didn’t have sufficient food. Now that they had overcome their hardship and
were in a stable place, Duran wanted nothing more than to reach out and help others in need. She even left encouraging
notes in the lunches for both boys.
Duran shared the incident in an inspiring Facebook post in which she talked about how proud she was of her son’s heartand how kind he was for doing that for another person. The efforts made by Duran who was by no means well off, got
noticed by her players. A plan was under discussion to help their coach. Meanwhile, Johnson’s mother also learned of
Duran’s generosity, and she called Duran up and offered to pay her back in person.
