M: Yes, it was supposed to start at 6: 30 p. m. , but it was delayed for 30 minutes. Text 2 M: I’ve heard you traveled around Europe last year. Is it true? W: Not exactly. I visited three countries there, like France. I had planned to see Finland and Iceland, but I had to come back for my business. Text 3 W: Have you brought the book I lent you? M: I’m sorry. It completely slipped my mind. I promise I will bring it tomorrow. Text 4 W: What is your plan for the coming weekend? M: To take my son to the Children’s Park on Saturday, on Sunday morning to do shopping with my wife, and in the afternoon to keep my parents company at home. Text 5 M: The university library is hiring these days. I’d like you to get ready for the interview. W: I’ve found a suitable job in a bank, but thanks anyway. Text 6 M: Congratulations, Betty. W: Thank you. What about Peter? M: Oh, he dropped the stick. W: Bad luck! Do you know who won the high jump? M: My classmate, Joe. W: Your class did very well at the sports meeting. By the way, who was first in the men’s 100meter race? M: It definitely belongs to Bob. Text 7 W: Andy, you’ve been so busy lately that we don’t see you any more.M: I’ve been trying to finish this research project so that I can present my findings at the conference in July. W: But that’s two months away. You’ve still got a lot of time. M: Not really. You see, I’ve finished all the research, and I’ve just organized all my notes, but it will take me almost two months to type them. W: Well, if that’s your only problem, I can type up your paper in less than two weeks. Text 8 M: Well, Lucy, why do you look unhappy? W: Oh, Mike. I’ve made three bad mistakes so far this week. This morning I forgot to give a very important message to my father, so he got really angry with me. M: But you’re usually very careful and never make mistakes. What’s the matter with you? W: I’m very tired. I don’t know what I’m doing these days. M: Have you gone to bed late recently? W: I’m usually in bed at about ten. But I am woken up at half past four every morning. And then I can’t go back to sleep. M: Why? W: It’s my new neighbor. He has to get up at half past four every morning and he always turns his radio on loudly. M: Ask him to turn it down then. W: OK. I’ll have to talk with him. Text 9 W: Hey, Adam. I’m worried about my sister Alice. She’s in college and has just declared art as her major. M: Why does that worry you? I’ve seen her paintings. She’s very talented in art. W: I know. But I’m afraid that once she graduates she won’t be able to make ends meet. It is said that most artists only make about 60 percent of what the average person makes a year. What’s more, it’s harder for art majors to find a fulltime job. But she doesn’t seem too concerned. M: But you’re forgetting that there’s more for them to choose. Alice loves art and that’s what’s important. Even if she can’t make much money, she’ll be happy and emotionally satisfied. W: But she’ll have bills to pay. It’s going to be hard for her to lead a life on what an artist makes. M: Don’t be worried and I know what you mean. Let’s have a talk with Alice and listen to her. W: OK. If she insists on her idea, we’ll support her. Text 10 One Sunday, a young couple, who had just fallen in love, was having dinner at an expensive restaurant. The restaurant had a gardenlike and elegant environment. The food there was delicious and the service was superb. They had just ordered their dishes when they saw a lady sitting alone, looking at them. They smiled politely, but were a little surprised when the old lady came over to their table. The old lady told the young woman that she looked like her daughter. She said it would make her happy if they said “Goodbye, Mum” when she left the restaurant. How could they refuse? A few minutes later, the old lady stood up to leave. The young couple waved, as she had asked them, and said goodbye as the old lady walked out. When the young couple received their bill, they saw that it included the cost of the old lady’s meal. They called over the manager and asked him whathappened. “The bill includes the charge for your mother’s meal, ” he explained. “She said you would pay. ” 第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分50分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。 A (2021·浙江高三)As California gray whales wind their way south along North America’s Pacific coast, researchers are watching, worried about another year of unexplained die-offs. Last spring and summer, 215 whales inexplicably(说不清地)washed up along North America’s West Coast. Concerned, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration called for an investigation, bringing together researchers from the Arctic to Mexico to explore the strandings(搁浅)in a uniform manner. According to the scientists involved with the investigation, it’s still unclear what caused the 2019 die﹣off and whether the whales will fare better this year. California gray whales migrate 5, 000 miles every year from the Arctic to Mexico’s Baja. Their journey is the longest migration, and full of dangers such as ships and plastic rubbish. The journey back north is particularly dangerous because gray whales only eat while in the Arctic; therefore, they are running on empty as they make their return trip from Baja. Data and observations collected this past summer by researchers based at NOAA’s Alaska Fisheries Science Center have raised more questions than answers. For instance, 15 gray whales were spotted in one day in the eastern Beaufort Sea-a rare sighting for a species usually seen getting fat at their feeding grounds. But with the sea ice forming later in winter and breaking up earlier in summer, scientists wonder whether gray whales will continue to move farther east to new feeding areas. In addition to changes in food availability, as sea ice decreases, whales are running into more and more ship traffic in these remote waters. Ship strikes and being trapped in fishing gear are common causes of whale injury and death. Maggie Mooney-Seus, spokeswoman for the Alaska Fisheries Science Center, said, “We are working to determine future whale research plans that may help shed light on this and other relevant questions.” 【语篇导读】这是一篇新闻报道。本文主要讲的是目前尚不清楚是什么原因导致了2019年的鲸鱼死亡,灰 鲸灭绝的原因仍在调查中。 21.The reason for the die-offs of the California gray whales is________. A. lack of food. B. too much plastic rubbish. C. heavy ship traffic. D. still under investigation.【答案】D 【解析】细节理解题。 根据第三段“According to the scientists involved with the investigation, it’s still unclear what caused the 2019 die﹣off and whether the whales will fare better this year.(据参与调查的 科学家称,目前尚不清楚是什么原因导致了2019年的鲸鱼死亡,以及今年鲸鱼的情况是否会好 转)”可知灰鲸相继死去的原因尚不清楚,仍在调查中。 故选D。 22.Why were 15 gray whales seen in the eastern Beaufort Sea? A. They probably were looking for a new migrating path. B. They probably were avoiding the noises of fishing gears. C. They probably were exploring their new feeding grounds. D. They probably were escaping from being hunted by the ships. 【答案】C 【解析】推理判断题。 根据第五段“But with the sea ice forming later in winter and breaking up earlier in summer, scientists wonder whether gray whales will continue to move farther east to new feeding areas.(但由于冬季海冰形成较晚,夏季海冰分解较早,科学家们怀疑灰鲸是否会继续向东迁移 到新的觅食区)”可知在波弗特海东部能看到15头灰鲸的原因是它们可能正在探索新的觅食地。 故选C。 23.What do the underlined words “shed light on” refer to in the last paragraph? A. Clarify. B. Solve. C. Improve. D. Research. 【答案】A 【解析】词义猜测题。 根据第一题的分析可知,灰鲸相继死去的原因尚不清楚。根据最后一段“We are working to determine future whale research plans that may help shed light on this and other relevant questions.(我们正在努力确定未来的鲸鱼研究计划,这些计划可能有助于 shed light on 这一点和 其他相关问题)”可知,我们制定的未来的鲸鱼计划是可能有助于解释清楚灰鲸相继死去的这一 问题和其他相关问题的。所以shed light on是指的是“解释清楚”,也就是澄清。A. Clarify 澄 清;B. Solve 解决;C. Improve 改进;D. Research 研究。 故选A。 B (2021·江苏省南通中学高三)We moved into a beautiful two-story old house. The house was built in 1956. It was repaired in 2003. At first, really small things began to happen. They didn’t make me believe that something was wrong, but as time went on, things started becoming stranger and stranger. Early something was missing, and later on it would be found somewhere else. I just thought I had forgotten where I put it, or perhaps my daughter was playing aroundwith things. Then later on I would hear strange sounds when nobody was at home but me. Yet it was an old house, and sometimes old houses did make little noises, so again, I didn’t really mind. Then things that I couldn’t explain started happening. It was last November and I was at home alone cleaning the house. When I was sweeping the kitchen floor, I felt a very cold wind blowing my hair. I thought the kitchen window must have been opened, but when I checked it, it was closed. The windows were new, and there was no way any cold air came in. We all felt very strange and moved away from there in October, 2014. I was never really frightened. My sister and I didn’t play video games. We didn’t have cable TV. Summers were filled with swimming in the pond and picking wild blackberries for Grandma to make a pie. Autumn was filled with corn mazes and crunching through leaves in the woods. And winter was all about building igloos near the frozen lake. My high school had zero diversity. Most people here could visit their entire extended family within 30 miles’ drive. And many were perfectly happy with the prospect of staying in rural northeast Ohio forever. It was in high school that I began to realize that I wanted something beyond what I knew inside my Midwest bubble. I loved reading and learning about new places, so I spent the rest of my high school career saving up so that I could go on a Lord of the Rings–themed tour of New Zealand when I graduated. After that initial trip to New Zealand, I was fully infected with the travel bug. I joined my college marching band simply because it would mean international performance tours every two years. And I began to realize that I couldn’t imagine my life without travel in it. I got a great education from both my little rural high school and my little rural Ohio college. But, the more I traveled, the more acutely aware I became of the fact that traveling made up for my education in a way that textbooks and PowerPoint presentations in lecture halls just simply could not. So, is travel the best education? Well, I don’t know if it deserves the superlative of the “best”. But travel is definitely really valuable and a necessary part of becoming a global citizen of the world. 28.Which word best describes the author’s childhood? Although she was only 16 years old and the only female in an exploration group of more than 45 people, she was ready to courageously make her mark in American history. In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson bought more than 825,000 square miles of land from France. To explore this new part of the country, Jefferson sent Lewis and William Clark on a two-year journey to report on what they found. They needed local guides to help them through this unknown territory. Born to a Shoshone chief around 1788, Sacagawea had been kidnapped(绑架)by an enemy tribe when she was about 12, then sold to a French-Canadian trapper. When the trapper was hired as a guide for Lewis and Clark’s expedition in 1804, Sacagawea also joined as an interpreter to talk to Native-American people on their 8, 000-mile journey. Sacagawea soon became a respected member of the group. She was skilled at finding plants for food and medicine to help keep the explorers alive. When a boat capsized(翻)on the Missouri River as they were crossing into what is now Montana, Sacagawea saved important books and much-needed supplies. When they needed horses to cross rough area, she convinced a Shoshone tribe—led by her long-lost brother—to give them some. She was so esteemed by Lewis and Clark that when they reached the Pacific Ocean in November 1805, Sacagawea was asked to cast her vote for where they should build a fort(营地). Sacagawea proved herself again after the group took a different route home through what is now Idaho. As they passed through her homeland, Sacagawea remembered Shoshone trails from her childhood and helped the expedition find their way through. Clark even praised her as his “pilot”. She received no pay for her services and died on December 20, 1812. But Sacagawea’s bravery and skill live on in the expedition’s journals, which are full of praise for the 16-year-old Shoshone girl who guided the most famous American expedition of all time.【语篇导读】这是一篇记叙文。文章讲述女孩Sacagawea帮助探险队成功探险的故事。 32.Why did the explorers hire Sacagawea? A. To do trade. B. To fight the enemy. C. To be safer. D. To help communicate. 【答案】D 【解析】细节理解题。根据第三段“Sacagawea also joined as an interpreter to talk to Native-American people on their 8, 000-mile journey.(Sacagawea也作为翻译加入,在他们8000英里的旅程中与印 第安人交谈。)”可知,探险家雇佣Sacagawea目的是帮助他们和当地印第安人交流。故选D。 33.What does the underlined word “esteemed” in Paragraph 4 mean? A. Respected. B. Suspected. C. Influenced. D. Promoted. 【答案】A 【解析】词义猜测题。根据划线单词后半句“when they reached the Pacific Ocean in November 1805, Sacagawea was asked to cast her vote for where they should build a fort(营地).(当他们在1805年11 月到达太平洋时,Sacagawea被要求投票决定他们应该在哪里建造营地。)”可推知,Sacagawea 受到Lewis 和Clark 的尊敬,他们才会要求Sacagawea决定在哪里露营;由此可知,划线单词 “esteemed”的意思是repected“尊敬”之意,故选A。 34.What do you think of Sacagawea’s role in the expedition? And with the light of the campfire burning all night, I was unable to sleep until 1 o’clock. Later that morning, when we were all on the raft and ready to leave, I was told to sit in the middle because I’d never used a paddle(桨)before. 3 7 Once we set off, my US friend showed me how to use a paddle. My friends managed to reach the other side of the river quickly, but they couldn’t catch me. I felt panicked but wanted to get out of the water as soon as I could. 3 9 At last, I finally made it to a rock near the riverbank. Before us stretched the unending sand dunes(沙丘)that marked the beginning of the Sahara. Our vehicle set off, quietly running over the sand and small stones. It wasn’t long before we were surrounded by enormous sand dunes, towering above us on all sides. The wind was blowing grains of sand from the tops of the dunes, the sun was beating down hard and bright, and the sky was a deep shade of blue that I had never seen before. The wild beauty of the desert was about to reveal itself. There was not a plant to be seen. The desert appeared completely empty, which was calming and threatening at the same time. Eventually, as the last rays of sunlight were falling on the sand, we arrived at our desert camp. Stars were already shining brightly in the darkening sky and it was getting cold with the approach of the night. I grabbed my bag and headed towards the warm campfire. I was starving and rushed to put a steak on the barbecue. We enjoyed two days in the camp with camel riding and campfire parties before we set off for Kenya. A few days after our departure from the camp, we were very near to our rest camp in the Amboseli National Park. Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, rose up over the plains before us. Tall grasses and trees dotted the plains, which were alive with the African wildlife. Giraffes, with their long necks, were pulling leaves from the highest branches. In the distance, elephants were eating grass, ears flapping lazily as they moved slowly over the plains. The rest camp was in sight. Several huts made from brick settle across a large pool of water. The walls reflected the afternoon sun. My father, against my mother’s advice, decided to drive through the pool of water that stretched across the dirt road. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Then, our car was truly stuck in the mud. _________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ We got out of the car. ________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Then, our car was truly stuck in the mud. We tried hard to push the car out of the mud, but in vain. We needed two boards long enough to help the wheels move. Luckily, we were not far away from the camp. We called the manager of the camp for help. After a few moments, two local men drove over with necessary equipment and pushed us free. Thankfully, with the local men guiding, we drove on to the parking lot next to our hut. We got out of the car. We were amazed to find many monkeys jumping up and down in the trees. After carrying our suitcases and boxes of food into the hut, I returned to the car and fetched more possessions. It was then that I noticed a small grey monkey sitting on a tree a few metres away and eating a banana. “So cute,” I thought to myself, until I realized it was my banana that he was eating! What an experience!
