Social connection is a key to healthier and happier lives. The impact of lasting feelings of
isolation on health is similar to the effect of high blood pressure, lack of exercise, obesity and
smoking. The wish to belong is one of the most basic and powerful human needs. Music is a
powerful tool that can bring individuals together and promote trust, empathy and relief from
stress. When we dance and sing together, there is a sense of community, where everyone moves
together with shared intentions and a mutual goal.
Oxytocin, often referred to as the “trust hormone” or “love hormone”, enhances the brain
reward system (joy and pleasure) in response to love and social bonding and contributes to a long-
term relationship. Oxytocin has a calming effect on the brain, and this helps to build positive
social bonds. Perhaps when feelings of insecurity about separation are eased, people will simply
have more friendly social interactions.
Music is a tool that provides a sense of comfort and social connection among people. Music-
related activities encourage the formation of bigger social networks and provide a safe way for
individuals to interact and share experiences without revealing their personal information.Performing music involves coordinating (协调) our efforts. Coordinating movement
(dancing) with another person is linked to the release of pleasure chemicals in the brain, which
may explain why we get those positive, warm feelings when we make music together. This
explains why mothers often sing lullabies (摇篮曲) to calm their newborn babies. Soft music can
release oxytocin in the brain. The singing may help encourage bonding through oxytocin release.
In sum, oxytocin is a hormone that plays a large role in social interactions and social
bonding. Participation in musical activities can help individuals who lack self-confidence and
trust, and feel socially excluded. Thus, making music together should be encouraged during
periods of isolation to potentially enhance mental health.
24.What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A.Healthy lives depend on social connection.
B.Isolation tends to lead to serious illnesses.
C.Music helps people achieve individual goals.
D.Humans have a desire for belonging.
25.What does paragraph 2 focus on?
A.The definition of oxytocin. B.The function of oxytocin.
C.The structure of oxytocin. D.The use of oxytocin.
26.What does the underlined word “This” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Making music together. B.Coordinating movement.
C.Pleasant feelings from music. D.Participation in musical activities.
27.What is the best title for the text?
A.What music lovers like to share B.Why music gets people to relax
C.How music brings people together D.Why music strengthens people's trust

The most grown species of rice, Oryza sativa, was domesticated (培育) about 10,000 years
ago in Pearl River Valley in China, and it was from there that it spread to the different parts of the
world. Another species, Oryza glaberrima was brought into cultivation by the West Africans.
While the African rice remains largely limited regionally to Africa, the Asian rice has spread
across the world as a significant crop and main diet. Even in Africa now, Asian rice is the most
cultivated variety.Globally, rice is the main food of 3.5 billion people, which is about half the world population.
John Kerry King has interestingly observed that in Thailand the very concept of food is rooted in
rice, with the two main Thai words for food being “khaw” (meaning “rice”) and “kab khaw”
(meaning “with rice”).
West Africa imports half of the rice that the country consumes. Asian farmers cultivate 87%
of the total quantity of rice consumed by the world. The major rice-producing countries today are
China, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Vietnam.
Rice traveled from Asia to other places in the world along with sea travelers and land
explorers. Around 300 BC, when Alexander invaded India, the Greeks took rice back to the
Middle East. There is also evidence that rice was initially a medicine for Roman local physicians.
The traditional way of cultivating rice is in human-made mud ponds, and the benefit of this
cultivation method is that the water in the pond stops weeds from existing and developing. Dry-
land cultivation of rice is another potential practice that evolved only about 5,000 years ago. In the
mud pond cultivation method, rice can either be replanted after growing them in a nursery or can
be sowed by direct broadcasting. In dry-land cultivation, broadcasting is the only practical
method. Recently, methods such as the system of rice intensification (SRI) have been introduced,
where single saplings (幼苗) are planted in bunches in straight lines at a fixed distance apart.
28.What can we know about Oryza sativa?
A.It originated in Africa.
B.It is grown earliest in the world.
C.It shares the same gene with Oryza.
D.It is one of the main foods worldwide.
29.Why is the concept of food mentioned in paragraph 2?
A.To show the importance of rice in Thailand.
B.To help people learn more about rice.
C.To present John's special observation.
D.To show the history of rice.
30.What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A.What rice was used for. B.Where rice was grown.
C.How rice spread around. D.When rice came to the Middle East.
31.What is the advantage of mud pond cultivation?A.It helps to save labor. B.It can replace traditional methods.
C.It can be promoted on a large scale. D.It can prevent weeds from growing.
D
For the first time, the United Nations members have agreed on a unified treaty to protect
biodiversity in the high seas—representing a turning point for vast stretches of the planet where
conservation has previously been limited. The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea came into
force in 1994, before marine biodiversity was a well-established concept. An updated framework
to protect marine life in the high seas had been in discussion for more than 20 years, but previous
efforts to reach an agreement had repeatedly stalled. The unified agreement treaty, which applies
to nearly half the planet's surface, was reached late Saturday.
“We only really have two major global commons—the atmosphere and the oceans,” said
Georgetown marine biologist Rebecca Helm. While the oceans may draw less attention,
“protecting this half of earth's surface is absolutely critical to the health of our planet.” Nichola
Clark, an oceans expert who observed the talks in New York, called the long-awaited treaty text “a
once-in-a-generation opportunity to protect the oceans—a major win for biodiversity.” The treaty
will create a new body to manage conservation of ocean life and establish marine protected areas
in the high seas. And Clark said that's critical to achieve the UN Biodiversity Conference's recent
commitment to protect 30% of the planet's waters, as well as its land, for conservation.
“The crafting of the treaty represents a historic and overwhelming success for international
marine protection,” said Steffi Lemke, Germany's environment minister. “For the first time, we
are getting a binding (有约束力的) agreement for the high seas, which until now have hardly been
protected,” Lemke said. “Comprehensive protection of endangered species and habitats is now
finally possible on more than 40% of the Earth's surface.”
The treaty also establishes rules for conducting environmental impact assessments for
commercial activities in the oceans. “It means all activities planned for the high seas need to be
looked at,” said Jessica Battle, an oceans governance expert at the Worldwide Fund for Nature.
Some marine species, including dolphins, whales, sea turtles, make long annual migrations,
crossing national borders and the high seas. Efforts to protect them, along with human
communities that rely on fishing or tourism related to marine life, have long proven difficult.
32.Which of the following can best explain the underlined word “stalled” in paragraph 1?A.Been gained. B.Been suspended.
C.Been offered. D.Been proved.
33.Why is the treaty significant for international marine protection?
A.It encourages research on marine life.
B.It establishes a binding agreement for the high seas.
C.It promotes eco-friendly marine products.
D.It focuses on the relationship between humans and seas.
34.What is one requirement introduced by the treaty for commercial activities in the oceans?
A.Establishing marine reserves.
B.Reducing carbon emissions.
C.Making biodiversity surveys.
D.Assessing environmental impact.
35.What is the text mainly about?
A.The challenges faced in protecting marine biodiversity.
B.The importance of the high seas for global biodiversity.
C.The creation of marine protected areas around the world.
D.A unified treaty to protect biodiversity in the high seas.

阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。Mr Thompson was a dedicated and passionate teacher at Oakwood Middle School, known for
his unique ability to connect with students on a personal level. He took great pride in helping his
students excel (突出) in their studies and guiding them through their personal growth. Throughout
his many years of teaching, he had encountered students with different backgrounds, strengths,
and weaknesses, each leaving a lasting impact on his life as an educator. However, there was one
particular student named Peter who held a special place in his heart.
Peter was a quiet boy, often struggling with his academics and lacking confidence in his
abilities. He seemed to be overshadowed by his more outgoing and academically gifted peers,
leaving him feeling isolated and discouraged. Mr Thompson noticed Peter's struggles and saw the
potential hidden beneath the surface. He decided to take him under his wing, providing extra
guidance and support, in the hope of helping Peter unlock his true potential.
He spent countless hours after school tutoring Peter, helping him with homework and
assignments, and telling him that he was capable of achieving great things. Through their shared
efforts, Peter slowly began to overcome his challenges, and his academic performance started to
improve. Mr Thompson continued to work closely with him, encouraging his confidence and
inspiring Peter to aim higher, setting more ambitious goals for himself.
As their bond strengthened, Peter started to see Mr Thompson not only as a teacher but as a
mentor and friend, someone who genuinely cared about his well-being and success. They formed a
strong bond that transcended (超越) the usual teacher-student relationship, creating a unique
connection built on trust, respect, and mutual admiration.
One day, Peter received a scholarship offer from a famous high school, a reward for his hard
work, dedication, and perseverance. He knew that without Mr Thompson's support and belief in
him, he would never have achieved such a remarkable accomplishment. The scholarship was a
