What comes into your mind when you think of British food? Probably fish and chips, or a Sunday dinner of meat and
two vegetables. But is British food really so uninteresting? Even though Britain has a reputation for less-than-impressive
cuisine, it is producing more top class chefs who appear frequently on our television screens and whose recipe books
frequently top the best seller lists.
Its thanks to these TV chefs rather than any advertising campaign that Britons are turning away from meat-and-two-
veg and ready-made meals and becoming more adventurous in their cooking habits. It is recently reported that the number
of those sticking to a traditional diet is slowly declining and around half of Britains consumers would like to change or
improve their cooking in some way. There has been a rise in the number of students applying for food courses at UK
universities and colleges. It seems that TV programmes have helped change what people think about cooking.
According to a new study from market analysts, 1 in 5 Britons say that watching cookery programmes on TV has
encouraged them to try different food. Almost one third say they now use a wider variety of ingredients(配料) than they
used to, and just under 1 in 4 say they now buy better quality ingredients than before. One in four adults say that TV chefs
have made them much more confident about expanding their cookery knowledge and skills, and young people are also
getting more interested in cooking. The UKs obsession(痴迷) with food is reflected through television scheduling.
Cookery shows and documentaries about food are broadcast more often than before. With an increasing number of male
chefs on TV, its no longer “uncool” for boys to like cooking.
( )28.What do people usually think of British food?
A.It is simple and plain.
B.It is rich in nutrition.
C.It lacks authentic tastes.
D.It deserves a high reputation.
( )29.Which best describes cookery programmes on British TV?
A.Authoritative.
B.Creative.
C.Profitable.
D.Influential.
( )30.Which is the percentage of the people using more diverse ingredients now?
A.20%. B.24%.
C.25%. D.33%.
( )31.What might the author continue talking about?
A.The art of cooking in other countries.
B.Male chefs on TV programmes.
C.Table manners in the UK.D.Studies of big eaters.

"Hello!" You type into the chat box. There's a slight feeling of excitement flowing through your fingers, and you can't
wait for a reply. You think, "There's probably nothing more exciting than this."
With communication from all corners of the world possible at the ease of your fingers, we are now witness to an
advanced form of the hand shake and physical conversations: online friendships.
Alarmingly, according to Internet Safety 101, almost half of young adult users have received upsetting messages, with
92 percent posting their own real names and identification online and 58 percent thinking it doesn't cause concern. And
though some parents may be biting their fingernails in fear right now, more than half of the youth have admitted to making
their friends online and a good majority regularly text them.
Though the statistics are daunting, we hope, we haven't scared you off! Researchers actually found that pursuing
online friendships could be beneficial. Penn State University reported that this was especially the case for those with social
anxiety, as they might form a stronger comfort bond with their peers through the screen rather than a face-to-face meeting.
Additionally, online interaction may increase your self-confidence. In our current situation of isolation, perhaps that
perfect connection from the safety of our homes is all it takes to make things just a little more bearable.
In the end, it all depends on you. Whether or not your search for a friend bears fruit lies in your approach, and though
I'm not a great relationship master, I have some tips that will aid you in your exploration for the "BFF" of your dreams.
1.What can we infer from the third paragraph?

One of the things that we expect from the ocean is is deep blue color that reflects the sky. Scientists at UC San Diego
Institution of Oceanography along with scientists at the University of Washington have been experimenting with dyeing
(染) the ocean at San Diego beach pink. What could they possibly be up to?
This is being done for a study that examines how freshwater outflows are combining with the ocean surf zone. The
experiment is called Plumes in Nearshore Conditions (PiNC).“I’m excited because this research hasn’t been done before
and it’s a unique experiment,” said Sarah Giddings, a coastal oceanographer leading the study. “The aim is to understand
how freshwater interacts with waves, since it is usually warmer than ocean water and more buoyant (有浮力的).”
The freshwater is dyed pink so that the team can easily keep track of it when freshwater is added to the seawater. The
dye is environmentally friendly and is then spotted as it makes progress in the water. It is tracked by sensors on poles thatare located along the sand as well as by drones (无人机). There’s also a jet ski with a fluorometer that tracks the light that is
given out from the pink dye. The sensors outside of the surf zone record the height of the waves, ocean currents and
temperature. There are three planned dye releases as of now, and researchers are hoping that this pink dye experiment will
help them record more about how pollutants travel in the ocean water through these additions of freshwater.
Giddings explained: “We’re bringing together different people with different expertise, such that I think it’s going to
have some great results and impacts. We’ll combine results from this experiment with an older field study and computer
models that will allow us to make progress on understanding how the dyed freshwater spread.”
28.What is the purpose of Plumes in Nearshore Conditions?
A.To introduce the benefits of dyeing the ocean.
B.To study how freshwater combines with seawater.
C.To prove that freshwater is much warmer than seawater.
D.To examine the impact of freshwater on the ocean surf zone.
29.Why is the pink dye used by the team?
A.It is easier to be recognized by them.
B.It can effectively catch the sunlight.
C.It is the only eco-friendly dye.
D.It can actively cooperate with sensors.
30.Which of the following is expected to record in the experiment?
A.The time of ocean currents.
B.The power of the waves.
C.The change of temperature.
D.The travel of pollutants.
31.What will researchers probably do next?
A.Build more scientific computer models.
B.Experiment with dyes of different colors.
C.Make a further research into the results.
D.Discuss the results with different experts.

Modern life is full of things that can influence your ability to be sensitive and responsive to your child. These include
extra work, lack of sleep, and things like mobile devices. Some experts are concerned about the effects that these things
trigger off on emotional bonding and children’s language development, social interaction, and safety.
If parents are inconsistently available, kids can get distressed(苦恼的)and feel hurt, rejected, or ignored. They may
have more emotional outbursts and feel alone. They may even stop trying to compete for their parent’s attention and start tolose emotional connections to their parents.
“There are times when kids really do need your attention and want your recognition. Parents need to communicate that
their kids are valuable and important, and children need to know that parents care what they’re doing,” explains Crnic, a
psychologist. “Kids start to regulate their own emotions and behavior around age three. Up until then, they depend more on
you to help them regulate their emotions, whether to calm them or help get them excited,” he adds.
Dr. Carol Metzler, who studies parenting at the Oregon Research Institute, explains, “They’re watching you to see how
you do it and listening to how you talk to them about it. Parents need to be good self-regulators. You’re not only trying to
regulate your own emotions in the moment, but helping your child learn to manage their emotions and behavior. It can be
tough to respond to your kids with sensitivity during tantrums(精神痛苦), arguments, or other challenging times. If parents
respond by being bad-tempered or aggressive(攻击性的)themselves, children can copy that behavior, and a negative cycle
then continues to upgrade.”
As kids become better at managing their feelings and behavior, it’s important to help them develop coping skills, like
active problem solving. Such skills can help them feel confident in handling what comes their way.
12.Which of the following can replace the underlined words “trigger off”?
A.Set off. B.Burst into.
C.Consist of. D.Dive for.
13.Why does Metzler think it tough to respond to kids sensitively in Paragraph 4?
A.Because kids are unable to make out their parents’ arguments.
B.Because parents are too sensitive to train kids to be aggressive.
C.Because kids can not copy their parents’ behavior on these occasions.
D.Because parents have to control their feelings and teach it to their kids.
14.What’s the text mainly about?
A.Parents should not be bad-tempered in front of their kids.
B.Parents should consistently develop their problem solving skills.
C.Parents should engage with kids and respond to them positively.
D.Parents should continuously upgrade their language and emotions.
15.What will the writer probably talk about next?
A.The way to train kids to be confident.
B.The way to train kids’ abilities to deal with matters.
C.The way to train kids to self-regulate their emotions.
D.The way to train kids’ abilities to be sensitive and responsibe.

Every time I stare at the rows of jars filled with my parents’ homemade tomato sauce, I wonder: “Should I really use
one?”
I have been keeping these jars like precious treasures. No matter how hard I try to find alternatives, nothing compares.
Store-bought sauce? It just doesn’t taste right. Even if I try to recreate it, it will never taste the same.
While growing up, I hated the tomato season. My parents would use the basement to ripen the tomatoes they had
collected locally in September. Like the other Italian families in the area, we would then take them to the garage when they
were ripe enough. There they were cleaned and boiled.
Having been stewed (炖), whole tomatoes were passed through my father’s homemade machine to separate the saucefrom the skins. Jars at the ready, we filled them with sauce and seasoning. The jars would be hot for a few days, sealed to
keep their own heat. They would then be lined up and ready to use.
This tradition was hard to carry on when my father got ill. After being diagnosed with cancer in 2019, he spent most of
his time in hospital. In September that year he came home, and on the weekend we decided to continue the tradition. I have
glorious memories of that day as we once again made the sauce. It was a beautiful but short-lived moment. My father died
soon after.
I can’t keep these jars forever. But it doesn’t make it any easier to open one. Every time I go to reach for one,
something stops me. My mother, ever practical, is visiting us recently and just stares at them.
“You should use these or they will go to waste.”
What will it feel like to use that last jar? It would mean the end of an era. Who knows? Maybe it’s time to bring new
traditions into life.
4.What stops the author from using the tomato sauce?
A.It has gone bad. B.He doesn’t like tomato sauce
C.He values it too much. D.He keeps it for future use.
5.What do Para.3 and Para.4 mainly talk about?
A.The tomato harvest. B.The homemade machine.
C.The fruitful tomato season. D.The making of tomato sauce.
6.What will the author most probably do next?
A.Open one jar. B.Keep the jars.
C.Collect tomatoes. D.Make tomato sauce
7.Which of the following can describe the author?
A.Practical. B.Faithful. C.Affectionate. D.Sensitive.

For Lydia Koniordou, a famous Greek actress and former Greek minister of culture and sports, cultural preservation is
essential to help people know who they are and learn what they should do in the future.
“The taller you want to grow, the deeper your roots must be. Our cultural past is our roots. If we don’t have really
strong roots and depth in our perception(认识) of our identity, we cannot grow. Without these roots, we will be torn out very
easily with the currents,” she told the journalist in a recent interview, adding cultural heritage is in fact very much alive and
relevant today.
Speaking of her teaching experience overseas, Koniordou said she was very much impressed by her Chinese students
when she gave seminars on ancient Greek tragedy at the Shanghai Theatre Academy in 2014. When the students worked on
Alcestis, an Athenian tragedy by ancient Greek playwright Euripides, they thoroughly researched the costumes they would
wear, the set, and the lights, among others, she recalled. “I feel they evolved and were transformed by this experience as I
was transformed. They did not just play a role, but created a whole world and that is why the production had so much
interest also for the spectators, ”she said.
Koniordou participated in the production of Euripides Electra together with Greek director Kostas Tsianos. “Tsianos
did something very important for Greek culture. He connected folk forms of art, folk dances, songs and poetry with our
classical past. We presented this performance in many places around the world, and the feeling that it stirred in the audience
was quite similar, even though they didn’t always understand the language,” she said.
The Chinese civilization is a huge tree with very deep roots, and Greece also has a rich ancient civilization, she said,
adding she believes that the two countries could promote cooperation and exchanges in many fields, such as in preservationof antiques.
4.What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A.The importance of cultural preservation. B.Cultural heritage is easily damaged.
C.The taller growth wants the deeper roots. D.We are easily torn out with the currents.
5.What did Koniordou do in Shanghai?
A.She played a role and was loved by the spectators.
B.She researched the costumes, the set, and the lights.
C.She studied the art of Chinese performance as a student.
D.She promoted the students’ understanding of Greek culture.
6.Why did Koniordou cooperate with Kostas Tsianos?
A.To indicate her friendship with Tsianos.
B.To acknowledge Tsianosin’s contributions.
C.To popularize and promote traditional Greek culture.
D.To introduce the achievement of Tsianosin in presenting classics.
7.What will the text probably talk about in the following part?
A.Cultural preservation in China. B.The way to preserve cultural heritage.
C.The introduction of other Greek art productions. D.Cooperation between Chinese and Greek culture.

Restricting meals to early in the day did not affect weight among overweight adults with prediabetes or diabetes,
according to research presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2020.
“We have wondered for a long time if when one eats during the day affects the way the body uses and stores energy,”
said study author Nisa M. Maruthur, associate professor of medicine in Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. “Most
previous studies have not controlled the number of calories, so it wasn’t clear if people who ate earlier just ate fewer
calories. In this study, the only thing we changed was the time of day of eating.”
Maruthur and the colleagues followed 41 overweight adults in a 12-week study. Most participants (90%) were African
American women with prediabetes or diabetes, and average age of 59 years. Twenty-one of the adults followed a time
restricted eating pattern, limiting eating to specific hours of the day and ate 80% of their calories before 1 pm. The
remaining 20 participants ate at usual times during a 12-hour window, consuming half of their daily calories after 5 pm for
the entire 12 weeks. All participants consumed the same pre-prepared, healthy meals provided for the study. Weight and
blood pressure were measured at the beginning of the study, then at 4 weeks, 8 weeks and 12 weeks.
The analysis found that people in both groups lost weight and had decreased blood pressure regardless of when they
ate. “We thought that the time restricted group would lose more weight,” Maruthur said. “Yet that didn’t happen. We did not
see any differences in weight loss for those who ate most of their calories earlier versus later in the day. We did not see any
effects on blood pressure either.”
The researchers are now collecting more detailed information on blood pressure recorded over 24 hours, and they will
be compiling this information with the results of a study on the effects of time-restricted feeding on blood sugar, insulin and
other hormones and making analyses on the findings. “Together, these findings will help us to more fully understand the
effects of time-restricted eating on cardiometabolie health,” Maruthur said.
1.What made the study different from earlier ones?
A.Participants’ age. B.Participants’ daily eating time.
C.The number of participants. D.The research members.
