Having grown up in northern Arizona with the immortal Grand Canyon and the iron red plateaus of
Sedona in my backyard, I believed that the southwestern state is home to the most beautiful landscapes
on the planet. Towering mountain titans, a cozy valley and an infinite blue sky promised fantastic
potential for exploration. For me, no newly discovered sights or foreign landscapes can compare with
its beauty.
That is, until I was invited to explore Guizhou province by the China Storyteller Partnerships Tour.
Had someone vividly described how beautiful Guizhou can be in poetic detail, they would not have
done it exactly. There is no substitute for seeing with one’s own eyes. I will attempt to do so.

group. They use dyes produced from local plants to make clothing of striking blues and greens. Local
elders still practice weaving with artful wooden machines and pass that tradition on to their
grandchildren.
My father used to drag my brothers and me on yearly fishing trips around Arizona. We would
compete to catch the largest fish, and in the mornings, Dad would cook us a basic breakfast of bacon,
eggs, and toast. I sat in a small boat in the middle of the lake, with fishing pole moving slowly in my
impatient hands, and held my bored tongue while my father attempted to share with me the whispers of
the wind, a fish dancing on the surface of the lake or the majesty of a hawk hunting for prey overhead.
On my trip to Guizhou I had the opportunity to paddle on Wanfeng lake. At one point I rested, floating
at the center of the lake, listening to the spaces between silence and taking in the surrounding karst (喀
斯特) mountains. I thought about my childhood, and wished I had listened more closely to my father
while fishing.
I’ve lived away from Arizona for 10 long years, carving my own destiny in China. I’ve managed to
build myself a family, a career, a livelihood, and various projects. I feel as though I have everything that
I need. For a moment, in Guizhou, I felt home.

6. What is the purpose of paragraph 4?
A. To express his regret not listening to his father attentively.
B. To recall the most unforgettable experience with his family.
C. To compare the trip on Wangfeng lake with his former fishing trips.
D. To suggest that his trip in Guizhou takes him back to his childhood.
7. What does the author think of his life in Guizhou?

People who fit an entire week’s recommended exercise into a couple of days have a similarly low
risk of heart disease and stroke as those who spread out their physical activities, researchers say. The
results from a major study on ”weekend warriors“ against more regular exercisers suggest that even
when people are too busy to exercise in the working week, making up for the inactivity at the weekend

“Our findings suggest that efforts to improve physical activity, even if concentrated within one or
two days of the week, should be beneficial for cardiovascular risk,” said Dr. Patrick Ellinor, a
cardiologist at Massachusetts general hospital in Boston, “It appears that it is the total volume of
activity, rather than the pattern, that matters most.”
Public health guidelines recommend that adults do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity
activity every week or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity. But it has been unclear whether the
same benefits come from concentrated exercise or more regular, spread-out physical activity. The
researchers analyzed medical records for nearly 90, 000 people enrolled in the UK Biobank project. All
wore wrist-mounted accelerometers that recorded their physical activity for a full week.
According to the study, a third of the participants were inactive, meaning they clocked up less than
150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous activity each week, while 42% were classed as active weekend
warriors, racking up at least 150 minutes, mostly over one or two days. Nearly a quarter of the
individuals spread their exercise out, doing at least 150 minutes over several days.
The team led by Dr. Shaan Khurshid, a cardiologist, found that both concentrated and spread-out
exercise were associated with lower cardiovascular risks compared with inactivity. The risk of heart
attack was 27% lower for weekend warriors and 35% lower for those who spread their exercise over the
week. When the researchers looked at heart failure, the risk was respectively 38% and 36% lower. The
risk of abnormal heart rhythm was 22% and 19% lower. For stroke, it was 21% and 17% lower.
The researchers now aim to investigate whether such concentrated exercise has similar benefits on
a range of other diseases. “Our results may also motivate future studies of physical activities
interventions delivered in a concentrated fashion, which may be more practical and efficient,” said
Ellinor.
8. What does “weekend warriors” refer to in this passage?
A. People overworking on weekends.
B. People used to working out on weekends.
C. People enjoying entertainment on weekends.
D. People focusing on further studies on weekends.
9. What can we know about the concentrated exercise?
A. It gains in popularity.
B. It is preferred by researchers.
C. It may cause sudden heart failure.
D. It benefits our health as spread-out exercise.10. Why are the data used in Paragraph 5?
A. To show the findings of Dr. Shaan Khurshid’s team.
B. To defend the opinion that risks can be caused by exercise.
C. To prove regular exercise is better than concentrated exercise.
D. To indicate to readers that more exercise leads to better health.
11. What is Ellinor’s attitude towards their research result?
A. Doubtful. B. Indifferent. C. Positive. D. Conservative.
B 9. D 10. A 11. C

When I first began running in high school on the track team, it made sense to carefully clock every
mile and push myself to race for personal bests. But as I changed from running for sport to running for
amusement as an adult, I found that tracking my workouts often just ended with frustration. And it
wasn’t until my watch battery died several years ago that I first experienced the sense of calm that came
with running for the pure joy of it. I never replaced the watch battery, and that might not be a bad thing
for my fitness goals.
This is the idea of unplugged (不插电的) running, which is gaining steam in the fitness
community. And recent research has shown that getting rid of your running watch, especially if it’s a
smartwatch or fitness tracker, could actually improve your workout — or at least your enjoyment of
running.
“People used to have an interest in their sport and get enjoyment out of the sport, but now that’s
switching to the data,” said Eoin Whelan, a senior lecturer at the National University of Ireland Galway.
“They will compare themselves to people who are better than them, who are running faster or running
longer. And in the end we know that makes them feel bad. ”
Whelan also noted that people who are very dependent on smart watches or fitness trackers are
more likely to skip their workouts if the batteries on their tracking devices are dead.
In addition, there is evidence that running watch-free is beneficial for more than just the casual
jogger. Some professionals also have had success with leaving their watches at home. Welsh runner
Steve Jones famously set a world record at the 1984 Chicago Marathon without wearing a watch. More
recently, Olympic marathoner Trevor Hofbauer made headlines for winning the 2019 Canadian
Marathon Championships without a watch.
“If you have too much information being fed to you in real time, it can kind of get in your head,”
Hofbauer said. “For me, the simpler, the better.”
12. What happened to the author when his running watch didn’t work?A. He lost the desire to keep running every day.
B. He experienced running as a really fun activity.
C. He was at a loss how to replace the watch battery.
D. He had great difficulty achieving his fitness goals.
13. What does Eoin Whelan say about fitness tracking watches?
A. They can enrich the wearers’ social life.
B. The data provided by them is unreliable.
C. The way people use them is proper.
D. They can lead to harmful consequences.
14. Why does the author mention Trevor Hofbauer in paragraph 5?
A. To show the popularity of running watch-free.
B. To encourage people to become professional runners.
C. To prove the positive effects of running watch-free.
D. To present professionals’ views on running watch-free.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. It’s time to take off your running watch.
B. Unplugged running actually has two sides.
C. Comparing with others should be avoided.
D. Racing for personal bests requires simplicity.
B 13. D 14. C 15. A
And it wasn’t until my watch battery died several years ago
that I first experienced the sense of calm that came with running for the pure joy of it. I never replaced
the watch battery, and that might not be a bad thing for my fitness goals.
They will compare themselves to people who are better than
them, who are running faster or running longer. And in the end we know that makes them feel bad. ”
Whelan also noted that people who are very dependent on smart

devices are dead.
In addition, there is evidence that running watch-free is
beneficial for more than just the casual jogger. Some professionals also have had success with leaving
their watches at home. Welsh runner Steve Jones famously set a world record at the 1984 Chicago
Marathon without wearing a watch. More recently, Olympic marathoner Trevor Hofbauer made
headlines for winning the 2019 Canadian Marathon Championships without a watch.
Trevor

Personal development is the ongoing act of assessing your life goals and building your skills and
qualities to reach your potential. The path to personal development is a road with many challenges.
16
Set one goal. If you are ready to speed up your personal growth and start making the changes
you’ve promised yourself, you must start with one goal. 17 For example, you should say, “I
want to lose 5 pounds by August 1st” rather than “I want to lose weight”.
Do one thing every day that moves you forward. One of the major obstacles people face in making
changes in their lives is setting big goals and thinking too far ahead. 18 Try one thing every
day that moves you forward. This is an awesome way to jump-start your personal growth.
19 Every successful person acknowledges that their success was achieved with aconsiderable amount of encouragement and help along the way. They can be in the form of a coach,
friend, book, video or a group of members. Share your goals with successful people and people who
want to achieve the same thing as you, and you will achieve personal development.
Celebrate your success! Jump-starting your personal development requires effort and courage.
20 You deserve the approval for making changes. Cheer yourself on, share your achievements with
others, and appreciate your bravery in trying new things.
A. Learn from successful people.
B. Surround yourself with support.
C. Here are some challenges you have to face in reality.
D. But if you start now and start wisely, you can make it.
E. Be specific, be clear, and set a realistic time frame for completion.
F. Some even make the mistake of creating “to do” lists that are too long.
G. It’s important to take time to celebrate your success however big or small it is.

lose weight’.
18. 上文“One of the major obstacles people face in making changes in their lives is setting big goals
and thinking too far ahead.

It started with a bit of casual discomfort on the head, but after a week it had spread to the back of my
neck, enough to lead me to my laptop. Annoying as it was, I was 21 to take up my doctor’s
time with such a silly complaint and then have a wasted journey only to be informed that it would clear
up by itself and that 22 would be of no use at all.
As soon as I’d tapped in ‘online self-diagnosis’, the search engine provided me with over 11.5
million results. And during the time normally spent in the clinic’s waiting room reading the Women’s

I headed off to the doctor for what I thought would be a blood test but which turned out to be a
valuable lesson in not 26 everything you read on the internet. It took him less than a minute
to guess at and locate head lice (虱子). I was relieved to know that I would be 27 my hair,
and horrified to know that it was being occupied.
I learnt my lesson, but for some the worry caused by 28 every ache has led to a new
form of hypochondria (疑病症). Named ‘cyberchondria’ by the print media back in 2000, this particular
condition has 29 greatly. Although most people’s main point of call is still the doctor’s
surgery, it’s estimated that 30 worries are now the second most researched topic on the web.
This is truly a serious concern when about 25%of the medical information online is thought to be 31
.
Once upon a time, hypochondria required time and effort: you had to go to the library to research
your diseases and 32 go through the books. Now it’s just a matter of a few clicks of a mouse.
But while your doctor will make a diagnosis 33 your age, appearance and medical history, a
search engine will rely simply on algorithms (算法). These come up with results graded according to
popularity or numbers of key words. So the most highly ranked hits might actually be for very genuine
disease, which are nonetheless extremely 34 . One minute you think you’ve come down with
the flu, the next you’re under attack from sub-tropical, flesh-eating bacteria. Time spent going to thedoctor’s for 35 of mind suddenly seems fair enough.

Dear Bill,
I am writing today to share with you my concerns about my major choice for university. I am at a
loss nowadays because my parents have different opinions about choosing my major in college.
My father thinks I should major in finance for the reason that he feels it will prepare me for a
career in the world of business. However, my mother advises me to choose law as my major because
she thinks that our society is in great need of skilled workers and experts in law so that I can find a good
job after graduation. Despite their opinions, I want to learn agriculture as I am a fan of nature. I doubt
whether I will achieve good academic results if I choose something I am not interested in.
I need your help. I am looking forward to your advice.
Best regards,
Li Hua
It was a cold December, and things were tough. Mum had a hard time raising us kids on her own in
our small community. We relied on social assistance to keep us clothed, and although our clothes weresecondhand, we thought they were beautiful.
Looking back, I realized what Mum went through sending us kids to school. Every morning she
would tuck (塞) a new piece of cardboard in our shoes because our soles (鞋底) were worn out. When
we got home, Mum would have French toast ready for us. Our rent was $100 a month, but Mum
couldn’t pay it, and we knew we would move out right after Christmas on the first of January.
The holidays were fast approaching, and we were entitled to (有资格获得) $100 for Christmas
from social services. It was four days before Christmas. Mum said that instead of buying food, she was
going to use the money to pay our back rent. That way we’d have a roof over our heads for a little while
longer. Then she told us that there would be no Christmas gifts.
What Mom didn’t know was that I had been selling Christmas trees, sweeping snow and doing
part-time jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots—boots that weren’t patched (缝补);
boots with no cardboard in it. I knew exactly which boots I wanted. They were ten-inch, Top-Genuine,
Pierre Paris boots, and they cost $23.
The big day for getting my boots came on Christmas Eve afternoon. I was very excited as I hurried
up the shopping center for it. On the way, I noticed a grocery store (杂货店).

__________________________________【答案】
In the grocery store were different sorts of necessities and Christmas decorations displayed, and I
slowed my pace. It was then that I realized in our dim house, we had no Christmas decorations and no
money for Christmas. A strange sense of guilt suddenly engulfed me. With Pierre Paris boots still in my
mind, I tried to convince myself there was at least French toast tonight. However, my family’s
disappointed faces on that cold Christmas kept lingering in my mind clearly. After what seemed like a
century, I ultimately made the resolution and stepped into the grocery store, eyes brimming with
determination. I bought ham, oranges and even some dazzling Christmas decorations. I spent every
dime of my hard-earned money and went back to my house.
Once home, I piled the groceries on the porch and knocked on the door. Out came my thin mom.
The instant she unlocked the door, the groceries fell inside. Staring hard at these items, she was
dumbfounded. Tears threatening to spill over my eyes, I hollered, “Merry Christmas, Mother! !” Words
seemed to fail to convey her emotions so that she embraced me tightly. It was when a half-choking
“Thanks” escaped from her mouth that a sense of achievement surged through me. I bet I would never
have had such satisfaction if I had bought the Pierre Paris boots then. That night, I, an eleven-year-old
boy, received the most precious Christmas gift—my responsibility and satisfaction for my family.
