Modern life is full of things that can influence your ability to be sensitive and responsive to
your child. These include extra work, lack of sleep, and things like mobile devices. Some experts
are concerned about the effects that distracted (分心) parenting may have on emotional bonding
and children's language development, social interaction, and safety.
If parents are inconsistently available, kids can get distressed and feel hurt, rejected, or
ignored. They may have more emotional outbursts and feel alone. They may even stop trying to
compete for their parent's attention and start to lose emotional connections to their parents.
“There are times when kids really do need your attention and want your recognition,”
explains Crnic, a psychologist. “Parents need to communicate that their kids are valuable and
important, and children need to know that parents care what they're doing,” he says.
It can be tough to respond with sensitivity during tantrums, arguments, or other challenging
times with your kids. “If parents respond by being bad-tempered or aggressive themselves,
children can copy that behavior, and a negative cycle then continues to upgrade,” explains Dr
Carol Metzler, who studies parenting at the Oregon Research Institute.
According to Crnic, kids start to regulate their own emotions and behavior around age three.
Up until then, they depend more on you to help them regulate their emotions, whether to calm
them or help get them excited. “They're watching you to see how you do it and listening to how
you talk to them about it,” he explains. “Parents need to be good self-regulators. You're not only
trying to regulate your own emotions in the moment, but helping your child learn to manage their
emotions and behavior.”As kids become better at managing their feelings and behavior, it's important to help them
develop coping skills, like active problem solving. Such skills can help them feel confident in
handling what comes their way.
“When parents engage positively with their children, teaching them the behaviors and skills
that they need to cope with the world, children learn to follow rules and regulate their own
feelings,” Metzler says.

It's an all too common story: A little child wanders off during a party and falls into a
backyard pool. No one notices she's missing—until it's too late. When Grayson Barron learned of
such a tragedy in a friend's neighborhood, the 18-year-old immediately jumped into problem-
solving mode. The new pool alarm system he's just developed sends out several types of warnings
when someone or something splashes into an unguarded pool.
Grayson calls his floating system “The Buoy (浮标)”. The idea is to turn it on when no one is
using the pool. A large splash will trigger its built-in sensors to send out a series of alerts—a
flashing light, an alarm that sounds like a loud doorbell and a text to the owner's mobile phone.
“You could be on the other side of the world and know if somebody has just jumped in your
pool”.
Grayson's is not the first pool alarm, but the teen says others all have drawbacks. Some are
very costly. Other floating alarms can become stuck in corners of a pool or lose balance. He
wanted a low-cost option that was reliable. Grayson 3-D printed the main part of his device, then
attached sensors. They detect its direction and movements. He then equipped the device with a
light, a speaker and a wireless network that can send texts. A battery, which is hooked up to solar
panels, keeps the system charged for months. An anchor keeps the buoy upright and in place.
“While hard to design, the new system is so easy to use,” says Grayson. “All I do is turn it on
and throw it into a pool.” After that, he says, “it just does its thing”.
Grayson plans to teach future versions of his device to identify the source of any unexpected
waves. Then the alarm might tell the difference between a basketball, for example, and a child or
small dog.
28.Why was a child falling into a pool mentioned in paragraph 1?
A.To remind the importance of safety.B.To draw the necessity to do something.
C.To stress the importance of swimming skills.
D.To warn of the danger of children swimming alone.
29.What does the author mainly talk about in paragraph 2?
A.The operation mode of the system.
B.The basic structure of the system.
C.The different effects of the system.
D.The wide recognition of the system.
30. What is the difficult part during the course of creating according to Grayson?
A.The 3-D printing. B.The cost. C.The design. D.The signals.
31.What does Grayson plan to do next?
A.Equip his device with a battery. B.Cut down the cost of his device.
C.Connect his device with a network. D.Make his device identify different
waves.

What do you do if a South American weed is choking up your local Australian waterways? In
the case of the cabomba plant, scientists are enlisting the help of the weed's natural South
American enemy, the tiny cabomba weevil. Cabomba originally came to Australia in 1967 as an
aquarium plant, and has since spread throughout lakes and rivers along the country's east coast. It
grows up to 5 cm (about 2 inches) per day, forming pieces that displace local plants, block
sunlight from reaching lower depths, add to the cost of water treatment, and make boating or other
recreational activities difficult if not impossible.
Large quantities of the weed are currently removed from water bodies by mechanical means,
although doing so is an expensive and laborious process, plus the plant quickly grows back to
problematic levels. With these limitations in mind, scientists from the Australian national science
agency CSIRO looked to the cabomba weevil. Native to several South American countries, the
aquatic insect is only about the size of a grain of rice, and takes its name from the fact that it feeds
on nothing but the cabomba plant. That said, in order to be on the safe side, the CSIRO scientists
raised three generations of the weevils in captivity (圈养), offering them 17 Australian aquatic
plants that are closely related to cabomba. The weevils showed no interest in those other plants,
choosing to feed only on cabomba throughout their whole lives. An imported batch of the weevils was initially kept in quarantine, and individually inspected
for some harmful bacteria. Having passed that inspection, weevils were then bred in captivity,
producing a population that was recently released into the cabomba-infested Lake Kurwongbah,
north of Brisbane. Time will now tell how effective the insects are at controlling the weed. In the
meantime, more of the weevils are being bred for use in other lakes.
The project is funded by water company Seqwater, and by the Australian Government
Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. Leading the research are CSIRO's Dr Kumaran
Nagalingam and Seqwater's Dr David Roberts.
32.Why is the cabomba weevil a suitable candidate to control the cabomba plant?
A.It feeds only on the cabomba plant.
B.It can survive in extreme climate.
C.It provides native creatures with food.
D.It can live in harmony with the cabomba plant.
33.What does the underlined part “the cabomba-infested” refer to in paragraph 3?
A.An area more suitable for the cabomba plant.
B.The cabomba plant infected with a disease.
C.An area heavily overgrown with the cabomba plant.
D.The cabomba plant being introduced for the first time.
34.What is the author's attitude towards the new method of controlling the cabomba plant?
A.Critical. B.Objective. C.Supportive. D.Indifferent.
35.Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.The history of aquarium plants in Australia
B.Australia is fighting against the cabomba weevil
C.The treatment for the cabomba plant in Australia costs a lot
D.Australia is using an imported insect to control an imported weed

Do you think that creativity is the ability you were born with? Think again.
Many people believe that creative thinking is difficult and favors only some talented
individuals and not most others. 3 6 Researchers have also identified certain personalqualities associated with creativity, such as openness to new experiences and ideas. Together, they
seem to paint an unattractive picture for those who consider themselves conventional thinkers.
These beliefs miss a key part of how creativity works.Creative thinking is actually something
you engage in every day, whether you realize it or not. Moreover, creativity is a skill that can be
strengthened. 3 7
Defined as novel and useful ideas, creative thoughts are original and unexpected, but also
practicable. 3 8 For example, combining leftover food to make a tasty new dish, coming up
with a new way to accomplish chores, or mixing old outfits to create a new look.
Researcher Chris Bauman found that simply redefining a frustrating situation can improve
the creativity of conventional thinkers. Say you're anxious about a presentation for work, you can
deal with the anxiety by viewing it as a new opportunity to share ideas, rather than as a high-risk
performance that could result in a shame if handled poorly. 3 9
4 0 Although the outside circumstances may not always be controlled, they do have the
freedom to choose how to deal with life in ways that creatively promote their productivity and
well-being.
A.You'll only have yourself to blame.
B.All People can unlock their creativity.
C.Everyday examples of creativity are plentiful.
D.This relieves people who don't consider themselves creative.
E.The further you look into the situation, the better you can see.
F.The media often presents creatives as those with striking personalities and gifts.
G.Giving up your existing ideas and hitting on a new way of thinking make a difference.

It was February 21, the International Mother Language Day, a day to celebrate language and
cultural diversity. At the end of the day, Mr Brown gave us an assignment: “All of you are to
make a presentation about your native language.” Max, whose family came from France and I,
who was born in China, were chosen to be the first two presenters. However, both of us were at a
loss, wondering what should be talked about. Needless to say, there were many questions about
what he meant. What should be talked about? How many sentences are needed? What format? Do
we need to write down everything?
On the way home from school. Max and I scratched (抓) our heads, trying to figure out the
meaning of Mr Brown's assignment. At first, we thought he was just giving an assignment to get
us back into the habit of homework. We also wondered if it had more to do with how we presented
to our classmates. Eventually, we both decided we would impress Mr Brown and the class with
some unique answers.
The next day, Max started his presentation by asking the class a question: “Is café an English
word?” Some of the students nodded while a few shook their heads. Max continued with a smile
and told the class that “café” actually came from French. “As one of the most spoken languages in
the whole world, French has a charm of its own!” Max said. He instructed the class as if he were a
university professor: “It is said that about 45% of the modern English words came from French. ”After writing some common French words on the blackboard, he began to teach the class how to
pronounce them. Everyone, including Mr Brown, applauded when he was done. I clapped along,
excited and nervous about my following presentation.
