The event kicked off with an inspiring lecture, regarding negative effects of social media and practical tips for better usage. Then came a lively panel discussion, where students shared their experiences and reflected on how social media impacted their lives. A 24-hour digital-free challenge became the highlight, asking students to stay away from social media completely. The response was overwhelmingly positive. Many students said that the activity helped them reconnect with the world around them and focus on meaningful conversations. Overall, this innovative campaign has not only promoted healthy social media habits but also inspired them to embrace real-life interactions. 附听力原文: 材料1 听力原文: M: What does the app do, Jessica? W: It s an exam organiser app. You put in when your exams are, how much you need to study for each subject, the topics you need to study and the app creates a study plan for you(1). M: That could save some time, Does it do anything else? W: Yes, Harry. It tells you when to take a break and have something to eat too, it also recommend different types of exercise and it reminds you to get enough sleep. M: Can I use it to share information with my friends? W: Yeah. That’s the most useful thing, I think. You can make study groups so that you can ask questions, exchange notes, tips and ideas and generally help each other.(2) M: Fantastic! Where did you get the idea from? W: Well, one of the competition challenges was called “ study group through communication” and i thought of this idea. I never thought we would win though!(3) M: Amazing! But will the app do the exams for us? W: That would be unfair. Harry! 材料2 Are zoos necessary, or are they only bad to the animals?(4) This is a question that causes disagreement among many animal experts. Some, we may just call them Group A, believe that placing animals in a zoo does harm to them. These people think that all animals should be protected from being hunted illegally for fur or skins and left in their natural habitats, which we can call wildlife reserves. They also advise people to be educated to know more about animals in the wild.(5) Other experts of Group B think differently. They say that modem zoos are designed very closely to the naturalenvironment. They believe that certain species, such as the panda from China and the white tiger from India, are not only protected from uncontrolled hunting and killing but can give birth to babies under protection and in that way they may be saved from dying out.(6) OK, that’s all from me and you’re expected to express your opinions on this question next class. 材料3 Good morning, class. Now I’ll tell you something about the history of English. Old English is very difficult to understand. Only a few experts can read it. Several written works from the Old English period have remained. Perhaps the most famous is called Beowulf(7). The name of the person who wrote it is not known. In 1066, William took control of England. The language used by the new rulers slowly changed the way English was spoken 800 years ago. English became what language experts call Middle English, which was used between about 1150 CE and 1500 CE(8). Middle English sounds like Modern English. Many written works from this period have been passed down. Perhaps the most famous was written by Geoffrey Chaucer, who lived in London and died there in the 1400s. Chaucer's most famous work is The Canterbury Tales, written more than 600 years ago.(9) The history of the English language continues as Middle English becomes Modern English. I’ll talk about Modern English after a short break.(10) 材料4 Hello, and welcome to this week's edition of the Global Culture Podcast. Today, we're going to discuss UNESCO World Heritage sites. Places as unique and significant as the Mogao caves in China, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the pyramids of Egypt are part of our shared heritage. There are already over a thousand UNESCO World Heritage sites. What are the benefits of gaining heritage site status then? Firstly, once a site is listed, it is brought under the supervision of UNESCO. It means better protection and conservation. There will be more technical and financial (11) assistance to protect and preserve the site. This is true especially when the site is critically endangered. For example, Angkor, capital of the Khmer Empire from the 9th to the 15th century, entered the World Heritage list in 1992 and was added to the list of World Heritage in danger in the same year. UNESCO then worked together with international experts and the local government to protect and manage the site. After a decade of hard work, Angkor was removed from UNESCO's danger list in 2004 (12). Secondly, as soon as a site gains its World Heritage status, the public will pay more attention to it. The new heritage site is likely to attract more tourists (13) from far and wide, at home and abroad. The boom in tourism will in turn lead to economic development. This is especially important for poorercountries, for it will boost the service industries and create different kinds of jobs for the residents. Also, economic development will make it possible to improve the local infrastructure. More roads and bridges (14) can benefit not only the tourists, but also the local people. Moreover, the inclusion of any site in the World Heritage list is a source of national pride (15).
