smaller group in Belle Valley, Ohio. Last New Year's Day, I insisted on acting as hostess and wanted to bring
back the joy I'd felt at my childhood New Year.
As family members arrived at the hall, I handed each one of them a numbered card and said, "Time for the
alphabet game." "What kind of game is that?" one of my great - grandchildren asked. "Well," I said, "who's got

Researchers from the University of York found that children’s views changed when they were encouraged
to write about the marine (海洋的) plastic litter surrounding Latin American countries.
The story - writing activity took place during COVID - 19. A total of 89 children took part in the study.
They were asked to think about what kind of litter would be found in the ocean. The children were given a list
of items and asked to create a story around them, keeping in mind the plastic pollution problem.
Over half of the stories showed the children had some awareness of the harmful effects plastic has on
marine life — what would happen if animals ate plastic, got stuck in plastic, or were harmed by things in
plastic. Many of the stories described very terrible results, including injuries, death, environmental impacts as
well as how plastics affect the beauty of beaches.
Creating stories around litter had an impact on the children as well. The stories showed clear examples that
human behavior is the cause of plastic pollution and the importance of individual action. For example, about
77 percent of the stories talked about solutions to plastic littering.
“A key part of our project was to examine the children’s responses to questionnaires (调 查 表 ) they
completed before and after writing these stories. We found that their knowledge on the topic increased and
they became more proactive, as they reported doing more pro - environmental acts afterwards. Children
focused more on preventing the problem from worsening than on ways to clean up existing litter,” explains
Kayleigh Wyles, a scientist from the University of Plymouth.
This story - writing activity shows that by viewing plastic items as artifacts (人工制品), each with its own
story, we can draw children's attention to the objects' use and their disposal (处理). "This project has helped
show how we can get that message across to children and hopefully then make a difference," says John
Schofield a professor at York University.
28. What were the children asked to do in the activity?
A Collect plastic rubbish in the ocean.
B. Do some research on marine pollution.
C. Make up a story about plastic waste.
D. Observe the plastic items given to them.
29. What did the activity make the researchers realize?
A. Plastic had already had a bad impact on children.
B. Great attention should be drawn to plastic's effects.C. Children were aware of the impact of plastic on human health.
D. Children knew something about plastic's threat to marine life.
30. What does the underlined word "proactive" in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Competitive. B. Involved. C. Practical. D. Promising.
31. What do John Schofield's words about the activity suggest?
A. Such an activity is quite meaningful.
B. Plastic items draw the children's attention.
C. Children can be easily inspired by the activity.
D. Plastic waste should be turned into creative artifacts.
D
Do you get nervous thinking about equations (方程式) or a coming math test? If your answer is "yes", you
are far from alone. Math anxiety has become a common psychological condition among students around the
world. Students in countries with higher levels of math anxiety tend to achieve lower math grades, according
to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Feb. 15.
Math anxiety — a negative emotional reaction to the core subject — causes fear, physical suffering and
behavior problems among young pupils, according to a University of Cambridge study. In ordinary life, many
people experience some degree of discomfort when meeting with a math problem, ranging from mild tension
to strong fear.
Some people also experience physical symptoms such as sweaty palms or a racing heart. They may then
try to avoid every situation involving numbers, meaning they are held back from pursuing careers related to
this subject, such as science, technology or engineering, according to The Guardian.
Comfort comes from the fact that those with math anxiety aren't destined (注定的) to be bad at math. "If a
child has math anxiety, don't assume that they're not good at math. They may have had a really bad experience
with math and there are ways to improve math achievement," Daniel Ansari, the senior author of the study,
told The London Free Press. "Students with math anxiety are not cognitively (认知地) disadvantaged."
Also, there are ways to manage your stress related to math. If you're feeling stressed before a math exam,
it may help to spend a few minutes exploring those feelings before the exam begins. "It's about making sure
you're interpreting your feelings correctly," Sian Beilock, a cognitive scientist in the US told the BBC. "Just
because you have a fast heartbeat and sweaty palms, that does not necessarily mean you will fail."
A little math anxiety could be taken as a positive challenge to overcome. Just like many people get stage fright
before delivering a speech, this nervous energy can help to motivate, according to Ian Lyons, a psychologist at
Georgetown University in the US.
32. Why does the author begin the passage with a question?
A. To expect answers from the readers.B. To introduce the topic "math anxiety".
C. To emphasize the difficulty of a math test.
D. To identify problems with math learning.
33. What does the author focus on in Paragraphs 2 and 3?
A. Proving examples. B. Analyzing causes. C. Explaining influences. D. Drawing comparisons.
34. What message do Daniel Ansari's words convey in Paragraph 4?
A. Math anxiety doesn't necessarily mean poor math.
B. Math anxiety is what nearly everyone will face.
C. Math anxiety is what leads to students' failure.
D. Math anxiety doesn't necessarily allow improvement space.
35. How should you deal with the stress related to math according to the article?
A. Take all nervous energy as a challenge.
B. Turn to cognitive experts for help.
C. Practice more before taking math exams.
D. Learn to understand your feelings.

Guiding Children in Choosing After - school Activities
Many children today face stress from school, friends, or competition. Nina Kaiser, a licensed psychologist
based in San Francisco, reminds parents that after - school activities should not add more pressure. 36 .
Kaiser points out, "Younger kids often try many activities because they are still finding out what they like —
and that is normal." So how can parents help their children choose the right activities?
To begin with, parents should allow children to join in the decision - making. 37 . When they feel that
their voices are heard, they often show more energy and excitement toward the activity.
Next, it is necessary to value each child's personal interests. Every child has different hobbies and talents.
If parents force them to do something they dislike, children may feel stressed or upset. 38 . This will make
learning easier and more enjoyable.
39 . Sometimes children may want to give up on an activity. Parents do not need to decide right away.
Instead, they should talk with the child, wait patiently, and think of possible changes. Through discussion, both
sides can find a solution together.
Lastly, parents should stop putting too much pressure. Not every child will find his or her passion right
away. It is normal for children to face difficulties at the beginning, especially when they are still learning.
40 .
A. What matters is to study something useful
B. Parents shouldn't allow them to drop the activityC. Another key point is to keep open communication
D. With patience and support, they will finally find what they love
E. Instead, they should give children the chance to learn and grow
F. Even younger kids can share their thoughts about what they enjoy

第二节(满分 25 分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。A Pleasant Surprise
For a long time, I had been longing for a piano of my own to practice on. I'd even drawn the piano from
the shop window in my notebook, marking every curve of its dark wood and the shiny black keys, imagining
my fingers dancing on them after school.
There was a piano shop on the street through which I went to school every day. Whenever I passed the
shop, I would stop, looking at the beautiful piano which stood in the corner of the shop window. Sometimes
the shopkeeper would smile and wave at me, and I'd quickly look away, afraid he'd see how desperate I was.
How I had been dreaming day and night to possess a piano like.
Unfortunately, Father was just a clerk. Times were tough during the Depression, and there were five
mouths to feed, besides buying coal and wood for the stove. In order to lay aside some money, on cold winter
days Father walked 7 miles every day to get to work. His shoes were worn thin, and his hands were always
chapped (裂开的) from the cold wind. No, he couldn't afford to buy me an expensive piano, though he knew
that I was very anxious for one as a gift. Once he patted my head and said, "I'll try, kid," but I saw the tiredness
in his eyes and shook my head, saying I didn't mind waiting.
On my birthday, after school I went as usual to the shop window to look at the piano, but to my surprise
the piano had gone. The corner of the window was empty, only a small mark left where it had stood. In fact, I
should not have been surprised. Others had the right to buy it, if they could afford to. Tears filled my eyes
when I thought of not being able to see that piano any more. I stood there for a long time, my throat tight, until
the shopkeeper closed the shop.
注意:续写词数应为 150 个左右;
请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Disappointed and sad, I wandered aimlessly up and down the street.
I couldn't believe my eyes the moment I pushed the door of my house open.

第一节
Dear Ben,
Last week, our school held a "Painting Poems" activity. First, teachers introduced some classic poems.
Then, students were divided into groups. Each group chose a poem and discussed how to paint it. After that,
we started painting. We used different colors and styles to show the meaning of the poems.
I really enjoyed this activity. It made me understand poems better. Through painting, I could "see" the pictures
in the poems. It was a great way to combine art and literature.Yours,

第二节
Disappointed and sad, I wandered aimlessly up and down the street.
Suddenly, I heard someone calling my name. It was Father. He looked tired but had a big smile on his
face. He took my hand and led me to a house. When we entered, there was the piano from the shop window!
Father said, "Happy birthday, kid. I know you've always wanted it. I saved money bit by bit and finally bought
it for you." I was so excited that I couldn't say a word. I hugged Father tightly.
I couldn't believe my eyes the moment I pushed the door of my house open. There was the piano, shining
under the light. My family was around it, smiling at me. My sister said, "We all helped Father. We wanted to
