Historic Old Quebec has stone buildings and narrow streets that make you feel like you’ve travelled back in time. In winter, try dog sledding (雪橇); just outside the city, Montmorency Falls — taller than Niagara — freezes over, and brave visitors can ice-climb it with special equipment. Tofino, British Columbia On Canada’s west coast, Tofino is perfect for ocean lovers. B After class, as Wang Xueru quietly packed up while standing the serious pain, a student approached her. Without a word, the girl handed Wang a small piece of paper, reading “If the sky is cloudy, I will be your sunshine.” In that moment, Wang felt her tiredness and pain disappear — replaced by quiet, warm care between a young volunteer teacher and her student in a classroom in Mengla county, Yunnan province. From the moment Wang entered university, her dream was clear: she wanted to serve. From her first year at college, she immersed herself in volunteerism. Thanks to her growing volunteer experience, Wang became a volunteer teacher. When arriving in Mengla county, Wang was anxious about whether she could truly teach well. Then, the first challenge came. “The hardest time was after our first exams, when the results were terrible,” Wang said. Later she got some teaching ideas from the classic book Dream of the Red Chamber, such as encouraging through praise, teaching them to use knowledge in real life, and trying to build an equal relationship with them. These ways helped the children not only settle down to study but also become more ready to think on their own and answer actively in class. Eight months later, the results spoke for themselves. When she started, both of her classes were at the bottom of the grade. Now, one of the classes she leads has climbed to third place. The magic, however, wasn’t just in test scores. Many students invite her to the New Year celebrations, hoping to take her to their homes for dinners, and share their hopes and dreams. Some, encouraged by her, have set big goals for themselves. As Wang looked back on her experience, one word comes to mind: warmth. “I want to be a teacher with warmth, with depth. And here, I found that the warmth goes both ways. The more I gave, the more love I received. That’s the real power of volunteer teaching.” 4. What does Paragraph 1 tell us? A. Wang seldom felt tired and painful. 第 4页/共 12页B. Wang took great pleasure in nature, C. The student showed care for Wang. D. The student wrote a music for Wang. 5. What does the underlined phrase “immersed herself in” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. Adapted herself to. B. Warned herself of. C. Lost herself in. D. Removed herself from. 6. Why does the writer mention Dream of the Red Chamber? A. To introduce a famous novel. B. To prove the book’s popularity. C. To show Wang’s love for classics. D. To explain Wang’s teaching ways. 7. Which of the following can best describe Wang Xueru? A. Quiet and shy. B. Smart and lucky. C. Strict and serious. D. Caring and loved. C In a summer, twelve people walked into a room designed to test the limits of human survival. Equipped with heart rate monitors and temperature probes (探头), they waited in temperatures of 42℃, coating their bodies in sweat. After several hours, their body temperatures began climbing, as the heat cooked them from the outside in. “Few people have actually experienced temperatures like this,” said Robert Meade, a researcher who led the study. “Imagine the skin like a glass of water on a hot day. That’s how hot it was.” Their experiment tested the body’s ability to deal with extreme heat by exposing (暴露) joiners to temperatures at which they could no longer cool themselves. Their study showed that this dangerous threshold (阈值) is much lower than scientists had thought before: a so-called wet bulb temperature (湿球温度), which considers heat and humidity (湿度). For over ten years, it was widely believed that the highest wet bulb temperature that bodies could handle was 35℃. It wasn’t until 2022 that a group of researchers found that things could get dangerous much sooner. This threshold means that most areas of the planet could become dangerous to live in with 2℃of global warming. “With a warming climate, we expect that those thresholds will start to be broken more often,” said Tony Wolf, a professor at the University of Georgia. “The heat waves are larger and they last longer.” 第 5页/共 12页The rising heat has already caused serious harm. Between 1999 and 2023, the number of people dying from high temperatures in the United States has more than doubled, from about 1,000 per year to over 2,000. During the same time, nearly a quarter-million people have died from heat worldwide. “People already die from heat waves now,” Wolf said. “So no matter how the climate changes in the future, it’s important to understand — right now — what these thresholds are, above which we start to see greater danger of heat-related illness and death.” 8. What is the purpose of the experiment in Paragraph 1? A. To prove skin’s cooling ability. B. To record body temperature data. C. To compare different heat thresholds. D. To test human survival limits in heat. 9. What do we know about the dangerous threshold? A. Scientists found it was lower in 2022. B. It only exists in Georgia. C. 35℃is the new dangerous level. D. It remained unchanged for 10 years. 10. What does the data in the last paragraph show? A. Fewer people care about heat dangers. B. Much more people die from heat now. C. Global warming causes all heat deaths. D. Heat kills 2,000 people yearly in the US. 11. What is Tony Wolf’s idea about studying thresholds? A. It needs quick action. B. It is not necessary now. C. It brings no useful results. D. It depends on future studies. D Many of us have experienced the annoying tears when cutting onions in the kitchen. There are different suggestions to avoid this, but what does science really say? According to a team of physicists at Cornell University, it’s all about the sharpness (锐利) of your knife and your speed of approach. After over five million years of use around the world, onions still cause a problem for our eyes due to a special 第 6页/共 12页chemical. The chemical gives off a sulphur-rich spray (富硫喷雾) when we cut an onion, which travels through the air and makes our eyes water. To study this spray, Cornell researchers first built a tool with different steel blades (钢制刀片). They then painted onion pieces black to watch the shape change after cutting. Using a microscope, they measured the width of the blade tips, ranging from 5 to 200 millimetres. Then they started cutting the onions at speeds between 0.4 and 2 metres per second. Their recordings clearly showed that sharper blades produced fewer drops with less energy. The duller (钝的) the blade, the easier it was to bend (使弯曲) the onion’s skin before cutting. This bending stored energy, building up pressure inside the vegetable until it cut open — resulting in more juice. In some cases, the drops could break into smaller aerosol particles (气溶胶颗粒), reaching speeds of about 43 metres per second. As these particles flew through the air, they created a fine spray that was more likely to make our eyes tear. Meanwhile, faster cutting speeds produced four times as many particles as slower rates. Although this research is still waiting for expert review, it offers a useful tip: Using a sharp knife and cutting the onion slowly can continuously reduce the unwanted effects. So, the next time you’re in the kitchen preparing onions, remember to use a sharp knife and take your time. Your eyes will thank you — and now you can enjoy cooking with onions without the annoying tears! 12. What is the key factor in the Cornell research? A. The type of onion. B. Cutting time and pressure. C. Knife sharpness and cutting speed. D. The amount of sulfur chemical. 13. How is the third paragraph developed? A. By listing steps. B. By giving examples. C. By explaining reasons. D. By making comparisons. 14. What can we infer about dull blades from the text? A. They cut onions more quickly. B. They bend less skin when cutting onions. C. They cause more tears when cutting onions. 第 7页/共 12页D. They produce fewer aerosol particles. 15. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. The Science of Cutting Onions B. How to Choose a Sharp Knife C. A New Way to Study Onions D. A few days earlier, his speech doctor had also decided that she wasn’t the right person to support him. Vedant has trouble expressing exactly what’s on his mind. But it was clear to his mother, Tulika Prasad, that Vedant was feeling defeated (受挫的). “I could tell that my son was struggling through all of this,” Prasad said. “It was one of those difficult times when nothing seemed to work.” Life had to go on, though. So that afternoon, Prasad and her son went to the grocery store. That’s when Vedant could no longer hold back his disappointment (失望). As they were standing in the checkout line, Vedant began to cry. Then he caught his mother’s hair and wouldn’t let go. “He was pulling my hair in all directions and I was in great pain,” Prasad said. “And I could obviously feel all eyes on us, as you would expect in a situation like this.” Then Prasad’s unsung hero stepped in — the woman ahead of them in line. “She turned around, looked at me with kind eyes and asked if I wanted help unloading my cart (购物车),” Prasad said. Prasad nodded and the woman took everything out of Prasad’s shopping cart and loaded it onto the conveyor belt (传送带). Finally, Vedant calmed down and let go of Prasad’s hair. When Prasad pulled out her wallet to pay, the cashier told her that the woman had already covered the bill. Prasad looked around for the stranger. She saw her standing near the exit, holding Prasad’s cart. When Prasad tried to pay her back, the woman refused.
