Eton, a ten-year-old boy, used to go for a walk with his father every day on a nearby
hill. One day the boy said, “Dad, let’s have a race today. One who touches top of hill first,
wins the race.” Father agreed.
Both of them started running toward hilltop. After running for some time, Father
suddenly stopped. Eton asked, “What happened? Why did you stop suddenly? Have you
accepted your defeat already?” “No, some pebbles (砾石) got stuck in my shoes. I stopped to
remove them.” Father replied. “Some pebbles got stuck in my shoes too, but I don’t care.
Once I touch top then I will remove them.” Eton replied. Saying this, the boy ran ahead fast.
Father removed pebbles from his shoes and moved ahead.
Eton had gone far ahead, but now he started feeling pain in his feet because of the
pebbles stuck in his shoes and his running speed started to decrease. Gradually, Father came
close to him. Seeing his boy. Father shouted from behind, “Why don’t you remove pebbles
from your shoes first?” “But I don’t have time for this!” said the boy.
In a short while, Father overtook him. Eton’s pain had increased a lot due to the
pricking pebbles and now he was not even able to walk. He stopped there and screamed.
“Dad, I can’t run any more.” Father quickly ran back and took off Eton’s shoes and saw that
his feet were injured. Father took the boy back home and applied some medicine to the
injuries.
When pain subsided a bit, he talked to the boy, “Son, I told you to first remove your
pebbles and then go on with the race.” “But I want to win the race first,” Eton said. “It is not
like that son, if any problem come in our life, then we should not delay solving them by
saying that we don’t have time right now. It would have taken you hardly one minute to
remove that pebble but now to save that one minute, you will have to suffer from pain for
one week”, Father said.
24.What was the reason for Eton’s not removing the pebbles?
A.His overemphasis on the result of winning the race clouded his judgment.
B.He firmly wanted to show his father that he could endure the pain.
C.He didn’t know the most efficient way to remove the pebbles quickly.
D.He was influenced by a competitive environment that valued speed above all.
25.What does “the pebbles stuck in the shoes” symbolize?
A.Temporary hardships that can be overcome with determination.
B.Small problems that, if ignored, can grow into major obstacles.C.Hidden dangers that can interrupt one’s journey if not detected early.
D.Minor annoyances that should be endured for the sake of a greater goal.
26. Based on the story, what can we infer about Eton’s character?
A.He is self-centered and believes he can overcome any difficulties with his own
wisdom.
B.He is sociable but refuses to listen to anyone’s advice, even when it is clearly
beneficial.
C.He is lazy and tries to avoid any task that requires extra effort, like removing the
pebbles.
D.He is highly competitive but lacks the ability to think sensibly in the face of
challenges.
27. Which of the following best expresses the main idea of the passage?
A. It's important to keep a competitive spirit in races.
B. We should learn to endure pain when facing challenges.
C. We shouldn't neglect small problems in life and should solve them in time.
D. Fathers play a significant role in guiding their children's growth.

Last week, the Los Angeles Unified School District became the largest in the country to
approve (批准) a districtwide cellphone ban (禁止). For teachers, this is great news. For
many kids, however, it's less welcome.
Smartphones will undoubtedly distract students' attention from exploring the unknown
or close reading Shakespeare's plays. A 2023 study by Common Sense Media showed that
teens check their phones more than 100 times a day on average. On top of the hundreds of
notifications (通知 ) lighting up screens and disturbing (扰乱) class lectures, teens now
spend 4.8 hours on social media each day.
Yet many parents remain wary of (持谨慎态度) banning phones during the school
day. They are afraid that doing so would cut off the communication between them and their
children-not only when picking up and dropping off children, but also in the event of an
emergency. But that's not enough of a reason to continue permitting device usage on
campus.
Schools have managed to function without smartphones for centuries-without their
absence causing any disaster. For concerned parents, equipping their children with
traditional cellphones, also known as" dumbphones", might be the best option. Schools,
meanwhile, could ensure they have parental notification systems that work during
emergencies.Additionally, there are already schools that have benefited from the ban. At Bethlehem
Central High School near Albany, N Y, for example, academic progress has improved since a
cellphone ban was applied last fall. Students are less distracted and more focused on their
studies. And in states such as Flotida and Indiana, cellphone bans are moving from individual
schools to statewide policy (政策). California’s leaders are also considering a statewide
policy of their own. All the better; the next gemeration should learn to enjoy the life of the
mind, not just the screen.
28. What is the purpose of paragraph 2?
A. To question the necessity of phones in school.
B. To provide reasons for Los Angeles' ban on cellphone use in schools.
C. To illustrate the consequences of teen’s phone addiction.
D. To present the problems with banning teens'sellphone use.
29. What does the author think of parents' concerns about the ban?
A. They are unnecessary and solvable.
B. They are reasonable and understandable.
C. They are worth considering for schools.
D. They are just baseless assumptions.
30. What conclusion can be drawn about the ban from the last paragraph?
A. It can really make a big difference.
B. Its effectiveness remains to be seen.
C. It is far from being a statewide policy.
D. Its application should suit loeal conditions.
31. What can be the best title for the text?
A. To Ban or Not to Ban: It's Not a Simple Question
B. Keeping Phones from School? It's Not That Easy
C. No Phones in Schools: It Matters to Your Children
D. Want Your Kids Focused? Put Your Phone Down First
D
Many important decisions come down to a choice between keeping the supposed safety
and risking going out for a chance at getting something even better. Though risk-taking
preferences vary between individuals, research with humans shows that we’re all generally
less willing to take risks in situations with more ambiguous(不确定的)outcomes. “The
finding should also apply to risk-taking in chimps( 黑 猩 猩 ) , one of our closest
evolutionary( 进 化 的 )ancestors,” said Haux, from Max Planck Institute for Human
Development.
To test the evolutionary roots of human risk preference, Haux and his colleaguesmeasured 55 chimps living in reserves for their risky and ambiguous choices in an
experimental setting. In each trial, they chose a ball from one of two pots. One pot was
always safe because it contained two balls filled with one peanut each. In the risky condition,
the second pot also contained two balls, but one was filled with two peanuts and the other
with nothing. In the ambiguous condition, the balls in the second pot still contained two
rewards or nothing, but the chimps couldn’t see the contents in the pot.
On average, chimps chose the risky pot over the safe pot 55% of the time but chose the
ambiguous pot over the safe pot in just 25% of trials. This suggests that chimps, like humans,
prefer to avoid situations with ambiguous risks.
“Structural similarities in risk preferences of humans and one of our closest living
relatives are likely to reflect adaptations to similar changes in evolution. While many other
factors may influence human risk-taking preferences, the parallels between human and chimp
behavior suggest that evolutionary adaptations have helped set a consistent( 一 致
的)baseline,” Haux said.
Future work will compare how the risk-taking preferences of chimps living in reserves
may differ from those living in zoos or in the wild, as well as how they compare to those of
bonobos, another close evolutionary relative of humans, Haux added.
32.Why did Haux and his colleagues conduct the research on chimps?
A.To compare their intelligence level with humans’.
B.To prove that chimps are more willing to take risks.
C.To explore the origins of human risk preference in evolution .
D.To test the differences between humans and chimps.
33.Which illustrates the risky condition in the experimental setting?
A. B. C.
D.
34.What does the underlined word “parallels” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Conflicts. B.Interactions. C.Misunderstandings. D.Similarities.
35.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Haux is satisfied with the current research.
B.Other animals will be studied for more evidence.
C.The research topic will be shifted to another field.D.Bonobos will be studied because they live in the wild.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

多余选项。
In recent years, cotton bags have risen to popularity as an eco-friendly alternative to
single-use bags. Many supermarkets have made the change. 3 6
As a study by the Ministry of Environment and Food of Denmark shows, a cotton bag
needs to be used 20,000 times to offset (抵消) its overall impact of production on the
environment. 3 7 According to this measure, for Venetia Berry, an artist in London who
found she had at least 25 cotton bags, she would have to live for more than 1,000 years to
offset her current bags.
According to the Circular Laboratory, it requires between 10,000 and 20,000 liters of
water to produce one kilogram of cotton. And only 15 percent of the 30 million tons of
cotton produced every year actually makes its way to textile (纺织品) warehouses. Even
when a cotton bag does make it to a treatment plant, most logos printed on them are not
recyclable. 3 8 .
That’s not to say cotton is worse than plastic. They both have disadvantages. 3 9 And
plastic bags use fossil fuels that produce greenhouse gases, never biodegrade (生物降解) and
block the oceans.
Buffy Reid, of the British knitwear label & Daughter, stopped production of her
cotton bags in April 2021. 4 0 For example, British designer Ally Capellino replaced
cotton with hemp (麻纤维). In fact, the simplest solution may be the most obvious: Not
every product needs a bag.
A.Cotton has dried up rivers for water use.
B.Some companies are turning to other textile solutions.
C.They’re extremely difficult to break down chemically.
D.We are hardly aware of the overuse of plastic in packaging.
E.That is equal to daily use for 54 years for just one cotton bag.
F.However, the production process requires using much more water.
G.But the increase in the use of cotton bags may have created a new problem.
