As a young girl growing up in France, Sarah Toumi dreamed of becoming a leader who could make the world
a better place. Her passion to help others was awakened when, from the age of nine, she accompanied her Tunisian
father to his birthplace in the east of the country during holidays. There she organized homework clubs and
activities for children.
Toumi witnessed first-hand the destructive effect of desertification. “Within 10 years rich farmers became
worse off, and in 10 years from now they will be poor. I wanted to stop the Sahara Desert in its tracks.” A decrease
in average rainfall and an increase in the severity of droughts have led to an estimated 75 percent of Tunisia’s farm
lands being threatened by desertification.
Toumi recognized that farming practices needed to change. She is confident that small land areas can bring
large returns if farmers are able to adapt by planting sustainable crops, using new technologies for water treatment
and focusing on natural products and fertilizers rather than chemicals.
In 2012, Toumi continued her dream to fight the desert. She moved to Tunisia, and set up a programme named
Acacias for All to put her sustainable farming philosophy into action. “I want to show young people in rural areas
that they can create opportunities where they are. Nobody is better able to understand the impact of desertification
and climate change than somebody who is living with no access to water.”
By September 2016, more than 130, 000 acacia trees had been planted on 20 pilot farms, with farmers
recording a 60 percent survival rate. Toumi estimates that some 3 million acacia trees are needed to protect
Tunisia’s farmland. She expects to plant l million trees by 2028. In the next couple of years, Toumi hopes to extend
the programme to Algeria and Morocco.
24. How did Toumi’s holiday trips to Tunisia influence her?
A. They helped her better understand her father. B. They made her decide to leave the country.
C. They fired her enthusiasm for helping others. D. They destroyed her dream of being a teacher.
25. What is the main cause of the desertification of Tunisia’s farmland?
A. Cold weather. B. Low rainfall. C. Soil pollution. D. Forest damage.
26. Why did Toumi set up Acacias for All in Tunisia?A. To create job opportunities for young people. B. To persuade the farmers not to use fertilizers.
C. To help the children obtain a basic education. D. To promote the protection of the farmland.
27. Which of the following can be the best title to the text?
A. Holding back the Sahara B. Saving Water in Africa
C. Planting Trees in Tunisia D. Fighting Poverty in North Africa
C
Adults who continuously played organized sports through their youth have fewer symptoms of anxiety and
depression than those who never played or those who dropped out, a new study finds. “And those who dropped out
of sports had poorer mental health than those who never played at all. But many more people drop out of youth
sports than play continuously until they are 18.” said Chris Knoester, professor of sociology at The Ohio State
University.
“If you play and stick with sports, it’s a positive for your mental health, but if you play and drop out it seems
to be negative — and most kids drop out,” Knoester said. The study showed that most people dropped out of sports
because they weren’t having fun or felt they weren’t good enough. “That suggests ways youth sports can be
improved to help kids,” said study lead author Laura Upenieks.
“Our findings about why kids drop out of organized sports suggest that the current environment is less than
ideal for everyone, and that the barriers to participation need to be given greater attention,” Upenieks said.
“It is easy to see why sports can be good for those who are able to continue with it to adulthood,” Upenieks
said. “The longer that youth are exposed to a positive and encouraging sporting environment, the more likely they
are to develop habits that are conducive to long-term mental well-being, such as a commitment to regular exercise
and collaborating with others as part of a team.”
The fact that so many kids quit shows that organized sports often don’t provide a positive environment. But
there are steps adults can take to improve that environment.
For one, sports should be safe for kids. The researchers said the fact that 8% said they were badly treated by
coaches is particularly alarming. “And the finding that nearly half of kids quit because they weren’t having fun and
about a third dropped out because they felt they weren’t good enough should also be a wake-up call,” Knoester
said.
“We need to improve youth sports so that it supports positive experiences for everyone and makes it more
enjoyable,” he said.
28. What can we say about dropping out of sports?
A. It has no impact on physical health. B. It’s of benefit to mental health.C. It keeps players playing into adulthood. D. It is worse for mental health than never playing.
29. What is one of the main reasons for kids dropping out of sports?
A. They don’t get joy from exercise. B. They prefer individual activities.
C. They are not physically fit enough. D. They are not academically related.
30. What can adults do to prevent the youth quitting sports?
A. They can reduce the number of coaches. B. They can supply a secure environment for kids.
C. They can change the rules of sports. D. They can provide more training partners.
31. What might Upenieks agree with?
A. The reason kids quit sports needn’t to be taken into consideration.
B. The benefits and drawbacks of playing youth sports should be balanced.
.
C The youth sports have an impact on long-term mental health.
D. Youth sports programs have both challenges and solutions.
D
The human tendency to gravitate towards people that are similar to them starts early. In school-age children,
the behavior called homophily, or “love of the same” often has to do with how others dress or act. Adults tend to
form groups based on professions or personalities. However, forming cliques (小集团) and shutting out those that
are “different” is not just a human characteristic. South Africa’ s Cape baboons (大狒狒) show similar tendencies
too.
A team of researchers followed the same two troops of baboons for several months. What they noticed was
that like humans, baboons rarely left their original groups. To prove if their observations were correct, the
researchers conducted an experiment.
They began by placing some foods that the baboons had never seen before on the edge of paths the animals
frequently crossed. The researchers recorded the time it took a baboon to get close enough to examine the new
foods and the time for ones that had the courage to taste them. Sure enough, the most curious and daring baboons
all belonged to the same group. What surprised the scientists was that the monkeys with similar personalities hung
out together, regardless of whether they were male or female.
The researchers say this behavior is not a good sign for the animals, because the daring and curious baboons
are also good problem solvers. The scientists are afraid that if the baboons share new problem-solving skills with
only their group, it leaves the rest of the species vulnerable (易受伤害的) to any environmental changes or
enemies.
Unfortunately, baboons aren’t the only animals that form cliques. In another study, the scientists divided 80fish into two groups. After about three weeks, the fish were re-arranged into smaller groups of ten. The researchers
observed that many of the fish that had spent time together in the original two groups seemed to seek each other
out. What was even more interesting is that once they re-grouped, they were able to find the hidden food much
faster. This led the researchers to think that like humans, the fish tended to share their secrets with their best
“friend”.
32. What can be used to replace the underlined word “gravitate” in paragraph 1?
A. Lose respect. B. Feel attracted. C. Move oppositely. D. Behave naturally.
33. What did the experiment on baboons show?
A. Baboons associate with similar others.
B. Male baboons tend to be in the same group.
C. Cautious baboons are good at finding new foods.
D. Female baboons are usually braver than male baboons.
34. What might the researchers worry about?
A. Baboons tend to share skills among other groups. B. Baboons may be reduced in numbers.
C. Baboons are suffering from a lack of foods. D. Baboons have difficulty in solving problems.
35. Why is the experiment on fish mentioned?
A. To show they are different from baboons. B. To introduce human-like behavior in fish.
C. To prove other animals form groups as well. D. To explain how they get on with each other.
