When I started my faculty position (教师职位), I was excited to be leading my own lab—and
nervous. I’m deaf and rely on lip-reading for verbal (口头的) communication. I had managed fine as
a postdoc (博士后), though not without challenges. But leading a team was different. I had no idea
whether I would be able to communicate effectively with my lab members. My pronunciation is
sometimes off because of my disability, which leads some people to believe that I lack intelligence.
But after almost 2 years in the position, I’ve come up with a set of solutions to help me out. In
addition to regular one-on-one meetings with my students, I decided to have each student work with
me for entire days in the lab when they first join my group. That way, they can see what I’m doing
and ask questions as we go along. And time with the students allows me to carefully explain the
principle behind each experimental step.
I also established written communication as the most important way to exchange information.
Through instant messaging services, I can quickly reach out to my students and share ideas, materials
and links. Before they get going with any experiment, I ask them to write a detailed protocol (实验计
划) as well, which has allowed me to double-check whenever I notice something that I must have
missed during our verbal discussions.
At first, I feared my students would feel that writing out all of their experimental design steps
and data analysis plans was unnecessary. But they’ve told me this step allows them to deepen their
understanding of the project before starting experiments.
I’m still early in my faculty career, but I feel these strategies are working well for me. I no
longer worry that I’m missing important information. And I’ve been able to guide students in a way
that would have been difficult for me to do through verbal communication alone. Looking back, I
wish I’d followed these strategies earlier in my career.

A. Encouraging communication in various lines.

A. It practiced their writing skills.

Alexsandrah is a fashion model (模特) in London. She has a twin, but her twin is not her sister.
The twin is a product of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Whenever Alexsandrah is not available to work
with a photographer, the virtual twin takes her place. Alexsandrah’s twin is an example of how
computer images are influencing creative industries.
The companies that make clothing say using AI prevents people from buying their products,
trying them on at home, and then sending them back if they dislike them. It could help a buyer make
more sensible decisions, cutting down on product returns and waste.
The fashion industry has often been arguing about using models who are only white or tall or who
fit one idea of beauty. Activists for including many groups in fashion say some companies could seem
like they are employing minorities (少数). Levi Strauss is an American clothing company known for
its blue jeans. In March 2023, the company said it would be testing AI-generated models. The aim
was to show how its clothing looks on people of all shapes and sizes. But the company said it would
not reduce its use of human models, for it would not replace humans with AI at the cost of the
action toward its “diversity, equity and inclusion goals.”
Others in the fashion industry are fully using AI. The Diigitals, a company in Britain, helped the
human model Alexsandrah, who has worked in fashion shows as a real-life version of the AI
model. “These are the pioneers. I’m proud of my work,” Alexsandrah said.
Other models don’t feel good about AI. Yve Edmond works as a “fit model”. She tries on clothes
for companies who want to see how their designs fit a real person. She worries that AI modeling
companies are using images and videos of real people to train their system. She calls that a violation(侵犯) because humans are not being paid for their part in the technology. Edmond said she was
called for photo shooting, but there were no new clothes. She was asked to move her body in certain
ways
and walk for a recording.
28. What is the function of Alexsandrah’s twin?
A. Relieving the shortage of photographers.
B. Providing inspiration for fashion models.
C. Filling in for Alexsandrah in photo shoots.
D. Promoting Alexsandrah’s popularity in modeling.
29. Why did Levi Strauss introduce AI models?
A. To stick to its common belief.
B. To make its products broadened.
C. To avoid its dependence on human models.
D. To demonstrate its clothes on all human figures.
30. What is Yve Edmond’s opinion on AI modeling companies?
A. They ignore human models’ efforts.
B. They help the human model Alexsandrah.
C. They simply take away from human work.
D. They can be accepted as a way out for the fashion industry.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Human Models Are Facing Threat from AI
B. AI Makes Its Far-reaching Influence on Clothing Design
C. Clothing Fashion Varies with Technological Development
D. The Clothing Industry Wonders about the Effect of AI on Models

Since ancient times, food has been a base for cultures worldwide. It is important for our survival,
which is why attention on food is a universal rule that connects us all. To feed our hungry
brains, our ancestors invented fire and cooking, which passed digestion to culture.
In fact, a culture’s food vocabulary is a window into its values and priorities (优先事项). The
cultural psychologist Paul Rozin has found that when French and American research participants are
asked what comes to mind when thinking of fried eggs, the French say “breakfast” while Americans
say “cholesterol (胆固醇)”. The French think of the cooking experience; Americans think of what is
entering the bloodstream.
Sometimes, slurping (出声地吃) noodles is seen as the preferred way to interact with the
delicious bowl. There is a great scene in Juzo Itami’s film, Tampopo (1985) where a group of womenin a hotel are being taught table manners and told to eat their Italian pasta noodles slowly and quietly.
Another diner sitting nearby happily is slurping his noodles and the joy he gets from loudly and
physically interacting with his food is infectious and before they know it even the teacher is also
slurping her noodles.
Besides, certain dishes never represent an unchanging tradition. “My grandma’s Egg Foo Young
looks and tastes completely different from what you might find in a restaurant or in somebody else’s
home. After asking about her version, I realized that she learned how to make it by picking up
different cooking styles as she traveled from Jiangxi, Macao, and Hong Kong,” said Shirley Ting, a
Canadian researcher.
If we treat culture as a defined thing, then we can see food as an important part of culture—food
practices and traditions help communicate cultural values, reproduce those values over time and
across generations, and help improve a group’s sense of having a distinct identity, different
from other groups.
32. What may we learn from Paul Rozin’s research on food?
A. People have the same food-related health concerns.
B. Food vocabulary increases with cultural exchanges.
C. Different cultures prioritize different aspects of food.
D. Americans and the French have similar cooking methods.
33. Why does the author mention the scene in Tampopo?
A. To highlight different food preferences.
B. To criticize rude manners in public places.
C. To stress the attraction of pleasurable dining.
D. To compare dining habits in films and daily life.
34. Which function of food is mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. Passing down traditional cooking techniques.
B. Strengthening cultural values and uniqueness.
C. Encouraging cultural appreciation of food globally.
D. Improving physical and mental health in communities.
35. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Food: A Bridge to Culture B. Health: Dietary Impact
C. Noodles: A Cultural Symbol D. Food Trends: Global Views
第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。In modern times when everyone’s so busy with their routine and problems, we almost forget to
notice others. 36 So it is worthy of sparing some moments to notice them and pass a
compliment (称赞).
A compliment is a high dose (剂量) of positivity which helps make people feel good. Whether
you are going through a street, a park, a market or other places, you can pass words full of praise
and encouragement to even strangers as they may contain elements which they want to hear. 37
Also, they will feel valuable enough to get the attention of those around them.
If you appreciate people for their hard work, they will gather the courage to do their job more
skillfully. For example, a suffering person may want to do something for his life but couldn’t do so
because of a lack of encouragement and positive support. 38 And the creativity of people
remarkably increases through your positive comments.
39 When you tell strangers about themselves, praising them through your compliments,
the ego (自我执念) will automatically disappear and healthy interactions will spring up. If you fail to
communicate with people or do not pass comments because of the ego, hesitation or any other
such feelings, your relationship will stay distant.
When you start to praise and give positive comments to people, you also get them back.
Everyone wants to be praised and seen by others. If you break your ego first and appreciate people
and tell them about their personalities, people also would like to do the same in return. 40
A. Then they will feel happy for your little act.
B. Everyone has their problems in today’s world.
C. You will develop a positive attitude towards life.
D. Compliments help make people close to each other.
E. Yet people who are living around us may not always be there.
F. Through this, you will get an acknowledgment of yourself, too.
G. With compliments, however, he is motivated to do what he feels uncertain about.
