Jason Allen was almost too nervous to enter his first art competition. Now, his award-winning image has
caused controversy (争议).
In August, Allen, a game designer from Pueblo West, won first place in the Colorado State Fair Fine Arts
Competition. His winning image was made with Midjourney — an artificial system that can produce detailed
images when fed written prompts (提示符).
Allen’s winning image is one of three such images he entered in the competition. The definition for the
category in which Allen competed states that digital art refers to works that use digital technology as part of the
creative or presentation process. Allen used Midjourney to create his image.
Midjourney is one of a growing number of AI image generators. Others include Google Research’s Imagen
and OpenAI’s DALL-E 2. Anyone can use Midjourney, while DALL-E 2 requires an invitation, and Imagen has
not been opened up to users outside Google.
Whether these tools can truly make art or assist humans in making art came into sharp focus not long after
Allen’s win. Some artists were angered by his win because of his use of AI to create the image. “This is really bad
for the exact same reason we don’t let robots participate in the Olympics.” one artist wrote.
Cal Duran, who was one of the judges for the competition, said that while Allen’s piece included a mention of
Midjourney, he didn’t realize that it was generated by AI when judging it. Still, he stuck to his decision to award it
第 5页/共 13页first place in its category, calling it a beautiful piece. “There’s a lot involved in this piece and I think AI technology
may give more opportunities to people who may not find themselves artists in the conventional way.” he said.
Allen won’t yet say what the text prompt was behind his winning image — he’s planning to keep it a secret
until he publishes a larger related work that he hopes will be finished later this year.
4. What led to the criticism of Jason Allen’s award-winning creation?
A. He kept his text prompts a secret.
B. He entered the competition with three images.
C. Digital technology is not allowed in the competition.
D. Midjourney’s AI-generated image earned him the award.
5. Which of the following is most accessible to common users to create images?
A. Imagen. B. Google. C. DALL-E 2. D. Midjourney.
6. Why did one artist mention robots and Olympics?
A. To oppose that robots participate in the Olympics.
B. To argue that art competitions should remain specific to humans.
C. To prove that neither Olympics nor art can be replaced by machines.
D. To propose that art competitions should ban AI because it lacks human creativity.
7. What can we infer from the text?
A. Cal regretted awarding Allen’s piece first place.
B. Cal is negative about the use of AI in art-making.
C. Cal unknowingly gave first place to an AI-generated work.
D. Allen’s entry didn’t acknowledge the use of AI in his creation.
C
The negative nature of peer pressure (同伴压力) is often presented without question. The undesirable effect of
peer pressure cannot be denied, but is it also possible that peer pressure might not entirely deserve its bad
reputation? Could peer pressure also have positive effects on the personal development and behavior of young
people? A look at the scientific literature reveals exactly that peer pressure is not always a force for the dark side.
Many studies suggest that peer pressure and the desire to conform (顺从) are simply a part of being human.
Humans, after all, are highly social beings. If humans are hard-wired to respond to peer pressure, then it makes
sense to examine how it can be used to change behavior in a positive way. Imagine a situation: student X has
always enjoyed playing the guitar but is lazy and unmotivated. Although initially unwilling, she is persuaded to
第 6页/共 13页join a school band. The group of students is preparing for a performance and the existing members are enthusiastic,
focused and hardworking. Gradually, student X is caught up in the spirit of the band and before long she is
willingly making the same commitment of time and effort so they can achieve a common goal.
So how does it work? Peer pressure — both positive and negative — follows a recognizable psychological
process. If student X does not conform to the established culture of the band, she risks rejection. To dispel tension,
student X changes her habits and increases the amount of time and energy she devotes to practice. Some
psychologists describe this transition of personal goals or standards to achieve harmony as part of an “identity
shift”.
The key to understanding the concept of peer pressure and its power over humans is to closely e xamine the
mechanism, rather than focus on its negative aspects. Providing a one-dimensional view of the concept encourages
the bias (偏见) that peer pressure is a strictly undesirable feature of human society. Instead, we should be exploring
ways to use its power for good.
8. How does the author illustrate the constructive application of peer pressure?
A. By citing reference. B. By contrasting.
C. By giving an example. D. By giving definitions
9. Which of the following proverbs agrees with Student X’s transition?
A. Iron sharpens iron. B. Birds of a feather flock together.
C. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. D. Keep good company, and you shall be of the number.
10. What does “examine the mechanism” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Focus on its drawbacks. B. Analyze its science of process.
C. Offer a narrow perspective. D. Concentrate on its positive sides
11. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Peer Pressure: Harmful or Helpful? B. Peer Pressure: Beyond the Negative Label
C. Peer Pressure: A Key to Group Success D. Peer Pressure: A Psychological Perspective
D
The climate crisis may lead the human race to shrink in size, as mammals with smaller frames appear better
able to deal with rising global temperatures, a leading fossil expert has said.
Professor Steve Brusatte, a palaeontologist (古生物学者) at the University of Edinburgh, suggested that the
way in which other mammals have previously responded to periods of climate change could offer an insight into
humans’ future. He compared the potential problem of people as comparable to that of early horses, which became
第 7页/共 13页smaller in body size as temperatures rose around 55 million years ago.
Writing in The Rise and Reign of the Mammals, Brusatte notes that animals in warmer parts of the world today
are often smaller than those in colder areas, an ecological principle known as Bergmann’s rule. “The reasons are
not entirely understood, but it is probably, in part, because smaller animals have a higher surface area relative to
their volume than bigger animals and can thus improve the dissipation of the extra heat,” he writes.
Brusatte said that becoming smaller was “a common way that mammals deal with climate change”. He added
“That’s not to say every species of mammal would get smaller, but it seems to be a common survival trick of
mammals when temperatures rise pretty quickly. That does raise the question: If temperatures do rise really quickly,
might humans get smaller? And I think that’s certainly reasonable.”
However, not all experts agree that rising temperature causes mammals to shrink. Professor Adrian Lister, of
the Natural History Museum in London, said the relationship shown by the recent human remains study is weak.
“We are not really controlled by natural selection,” he said. “If that was going to happen, you’d need to find large
people dying before they could reproduce because of climate warming. That is not happening in today’s world. We
wear clothes, we have got heating, we have got air conditioning if it is too hot.”
12. What may climate change do to human beings according to Brusatte?
A. Evolve smaller figures. B. Threaten their health.
C. Migrate to colder places. D. Lead to the extinction.
13. Which of the following statements is correct according to the text?
A. Every species of mammal would not get smaller.
B. Cold favors smaller animals while warmth favors larger ones.
C. Larger mammals lose heat more efficiently compared to smaller ones.
D. Reducing body size represents a frequent adaptation strategy for all the animals.
14. What’s Adrian Lister’s attitude towards the recent study?
A. Concerned. B. Approving. C. Reserved. D. Doubtful.
15. What’s the structure of this passage?
A. Problem — Analysis — Solution B. Phenomenon — Cause — Effect
C. Central argument — Analysis — Conclusion D. Proposed idea — Evidence — Challenge

第 8页/共 13页How to Teach Yourself Anything in Less than Three Months
Self-education can be wonderful and frustrating at the same time. If you go about it correctly, you can teach
yourself anything in just a few months. ____16____ I’d like to share my tips to achieve the former and avoid the
latter.
My self-education has been fairly extensive. I taught myself how to program computers, create graphics (3-D
and 2-D), how to design web pages and blog, etc. Self-education is good for just about any branch of knowledge or
skills you want to acquire. Here are just a few starter points of abilities you might want to pick up:
Know the end. What should you be able to do, achieve or know after learning? My best efforts at
self-education have always had specific applications. The more precise the requirements of my knowledge, the
faster I could learn. ____17____
____18____ Internet articles and scattered resources can help, but a solid foundation is far superior. There are
hundreds of practical handbooks on every skill and branch of knowledge. Books can give you a foundation that
trial-and-error cannot.
Identify must-haves. Programming requires basic math. Blogging requires basic computer, writing and
marketing skills. Basketball requires ball handling and movement skills. ____19____ so you can pick them up
before or while you try to master your skill.
Deadlines determine time investment. If you want to learn something in three months, that can mean an hour
a week or several hours a day depending on the discipline. Your deadlines determine how much time you need to
invest.
Patience is a Virtue. ____20____ but it can be harder when you reach a dead-end and don’t have a guide.
Your ability to educate yourself will match closely with your ability to keep trying when you want to give up.
A. Buy a How-To.
B. Combine books with trial-and-error.
C. Know what background skills you need before you start,
D. Self-education isn’t more difficult than classroom learning,
E. Poorly applied, however, self-education can be a stressful nightmare.
F. Do you just want to speak Spanish, or be 95% fluent in a basic conversation?
G. Learning something in only three months takes a bit more than casual trial-and-error,

The car turned onto the familiar road that led to Grandma’s farm. “Jude, this summer holiday will be a great
chance for you to stay with your grandma,” Dad said as he drove. Every moment, we were moving farther away
from the city, the place where I knew how to do things right.
The car engine wasn’t off before Grandma hugged me. I slowly dragged myself out of the car. “Jude, you look
unhappy. Why?” Grandma asked. She acted like nothing bad had happened last time. Could I ask how much money
her neighbor Mr. Jackson had lost because of my mistake? Was he still upset with me? “I’m fine,” I answered. “I’m
just missing my computer camp. Computers are something I’m good at.” “That sounds disappointing.” Grandma
nodded.
I liked visiting the farm during breaks before I messed things up last summer. Grandma lived alone, and Mr.
Jackson was like family to her. Then one day I forgot to lock the gate and let the goats into his flower beds. He lost
almost all his roses for the farmers’ market.
Now, back at the farm, I felt nervous. I was trying to hide in the room when I saw Mr. Jackson! He was
opening the door and calling Grandma. “I need help!” he yelled to her. “Just a second for the freshly harvested
roses!” That was when he saw me. I felt my heart tighten and was ready for his criticism. I deserved it. He had
probably been waiting for this moment since last summer.
However, Mr. Jackson greeted me happily, “Great, Jude is here! Your grandma always tells us you are a
wonderfully competent(有能力的)computer programmer.” I shook my head. “I am not competent. I am sorry I
messed things up.” He was surprised and comforted me, “It was an accident. Being competent doesn’t mean you
never make mistakes.”
I looked out of the window. There were piles of roses waiting to be sold. “Jude, can you help us? We want to
sell roses online. We have a computer and all the parts(零件)for our internet connection, but we just can’t set it up,”
Grandma asked. No internet. They seemed to live in the twentieth century.
