As a Ph.D. student, I loved standing in the rain, measuring how water drops move into the
soil. I loved the outdoors, and was endlessly curious about what I saw in the field and thrilled
to connect it to what I read. My ideas seemed to flow like the stream.
When I started my first teaching position, however, I lost the freedom to focus purely on
research or think deeply. I was consumed by pressing demands — writing endless progress
reports for students, organizing extracurricular activities, and constantly chasing funding for
my research. Consequently, my creative stream narrowed.
Later, I moved to a new university and returned to my Ph.D. research. I found that if I
could be in the moment with my students and act as a sounding board for new ideas — and not
be distracted by my mid-career responsibilities — then I could play a part in their creative
thinking. Gradually, creativity crept back though I hadn’t yet found how to spark my deep
thinking.
Another decade passed before I accepted a position in my hometown. During several
months between jobs, I was free as a bird. One day at a gym, watching the rain fall and puddles
(小水坑) form and coalesce (合并) outside, I suddenly was able to visualize similar processes
that I had been trying to understand, a thought I worried had permanently dried up. It hit me
that I needed to slow down and experience the rain more often! From then on, I’d think and
write in the morning, in a room overlooking a river or cycle along banks, which helped me
process new ideas and stay curious.
I now encourage my students to disconnect and take time out to think, to play, to have fun
with their research. I tell them to make it a permanent habit and seek the conditions and places
that foster curiosity and ability to think deeply. I hope the next generation avoids losing it along
the way, as I did.
24. Why was the author less creative in his first teaching job?
A. He lost interest in his research. B. He was tied up with management work.
C. He couldn’t think objectively. D. He was disturbed by demanding students.
25. How did the author regain creativity in the new university?
A. By ignoring his mid-career duties.
B. By changing his Ph. D. research topic.
C. By helping students do Ph.D. research.
D. By getting involved in students’ thinking process.
26. How did the author feel during his free time in his hometown?
A. Energetic and proud. B. Inspired and refreshed.
C. Thrilled and supported. D. Curious and adventurous.
27. What can we learn from the author’s experience?
A. East or west, home is the best. B. Slow down and win the race.
C. Creativity is the mother of invention. D. Small streams make great rivers.
高一英语 第 4 页 共 10 页C
People pursuing perfection and those valuing being on time often don’t see eye to eye in
the workplace. But according to a recent study, it is better to deliver a good-enough project on
schedule rather than perfecting it through procrast ination .
Researchers surveyed thousands of people in the U.S. and U.K, including managers and
others whose jobs included evaluating others. They presented participants with the same
examples of work, and then asked them to rate it. But first, they mentioned whether it was
either submitted early, right at the deadline or late.
Participants who were told it was late consistently rated the work as worse in quality than
those who were told the same work was early or on time. The study also found there wasn’t
much benefit to submitting work early since evaluators tended to rank work submitted before
and at the deadline as the same quality. Furthermore, it didn’t matter how late the work was
submitted, with one day or one week delays viewed just as negatively and that remained the
case if the employee gave their manager advance warning.
A field experiment was conducted in a high school in China that had students grade pieces
of art in a staged contest. The art was on a piece of paper that also included the date it was
submitted. Even though the kids were told to ignore all other details on the paper other than the
art itself, the works submitted after the deadline received lower grades. That study made the
broader point that it didn’t really matter who set the deadline. In the eyes of the evaluator, any
miss was a meaningful miss.
However, the reason behind the missed deadline mattered, researchers found. If it was due
to forces beyond an employee’s control, evaluators didn’t end up with as negative a view of the
work as they did when the reason was one within their control. “If the reason why you missed
the deadline was beyond your control, you as the employee should let your manager know,”
Maglio says. “That seems to be one of the few situations in which people cut you a break.”
28. What does the underlined word “procrastination” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Delay. B. Editing. C. Teamwork. D. Presentation.
29. What can be concluded from the research result?
A. Late submissions are more negatively judged.
B. Pre-announced delays get positive feedback.
C. Early submissions tend to be good in quality.
D. Rating results depend on the degree of delays.
30. Why does the author mention the field experiment in China?
A. To state kids judge submissions more objectively.
B. To prove the art itself rather than other details counts.
C. To show the finding holds true across age and culture.
D. To stress a peer-to-peer evaluation can be informative.
31. What can be implied from the last paragraph?
A. Employees get unfair reviews. B. The reasons for misses should be in control.
高一英语 第 5 页 共 10 页C. Bosses should care about employees. D. Unavoidable misses can be acceptable.

The island of Bali is a very popular vacation spot in Indonesia. Bali has beautiful beaches
with white sand and crystal clear waters. But because there are so many tourists, this often
means there is an increase of plastic, garbage and waste left on Bali’s beaches. Thankfully,
there is now an amazing technological advancement called the BeBot Smart Beach Cleaning
Robot, which can take care of this exact problem.
The BeBot robot went to market in May of 2025. It operates with very limited human
intervention and is solar-powered, making it eco-friendly. The robot collects waste and trash
from the beaches very efficiently and quickly. However, these robots are expensive, involving
the high maintenance cost in the long run. The local government stresses that the Bebot robot is
an innovative and effective tool but the responsibility of environmental protection still lies on
people. Every person must be careful with their trash and know how to deal with their waste
appropriately and responsibly.
The BeBot robot represents more than just clean beaches, which is an important goal in
and of itself. It also shows that the people in charge of Bali have sustainability as a goal, and
that they care about wasting less.
Bali’s waste management strategy is really working, and they have even been able to
recently close their biggest open landfill ( 填 埋 场), Suwung TPA. In addition to that
huge achievement, since the island province began using the robots to clean beaches, Bali has
been able to successfully reduce waste in their landfills from 80% to 20%. The trash is now
being sorted better, which allows the items to be recycled, reused or processed in more
sustainable ways instead. And what’s even more impressive is that they are on track to reduce
it down to 5%.
The BeBot robot indicates hope, innovation, creativity and efficiency. And if you are ever
in Bali and get to see it in action, or even if you see it just on video, remember: People have
the ability to live on a cleaner and less wasteful planet. And any challenge can be tackled with
a bit of creativity and innovation, one step, or wave, at a time.
32. What is the local government’s attitude towards the use of the BeBot robot in Bali?
A. Overly reliant. B. Sensibly supportive.
C. Strongly opposed. D. Totally indifferent.
33. What deeper meaning does the Bebot robot hold beyond beach cleaning?
A. The potential for complete removal of waste.
B. Indonesia’s leadership in robotic technology.
C. Bali’s commitment to sustainable waste management.
D. The advantage of solar power resources over traditional ones.
34. Which might be one of Bali’s future waste management goals?
A. To focus on developing advanced robots.
B. To achieve near-zero waste going to landfills.
高一英语 第 6 页 共 10 页C. To share the waste management technology globally.
D. To close the largest landfill for its environment impact.
35. What might be the best title for the text?
A. BeBot: The Fast Development of Clean Technology
B. BeBot: The Link between Tourism and Environment
C. BeBot: A Green Hope for Bali’s Waste Problem
D. BeBot: The Key to Promoting Bali’s Tourism

When you log into social media, does an algorithm ( 算法) govern your feed? When
shopping online, do you often focus on top-listed, AI-suggested items? If you answer “Yes”,
most of the time, you go along with what the algorithm recommends. 36 As the
name suggests, the term refers to our growing tendency to outsource decisions to systems
designed to predict and control our behavior.
Now, there’s nothing fundamentally wrong with accepting algorithmic suggestions.
In many cases they save us considerable time. But like water slowly carving stone, repeated
reliance on AI recommendations can weaken our capacity for independent judgement.
37 Over time, such reliance not only affects the quality of our choices but also
weakens our ability to trust our own judgements.
38 It is the capacity to make intentional choices and take purposeful
action. Exercising it requires that we actively shape ourselves through thoughtful choices,
rather than being passively shaped by algorithms, social norms, or external pressures.
To achieve this, practicing intentional pauses proves workable. That is, before accepting
a recommendation, pause and ask, “Would I have made this choice on my own?” This short
reflection brings awareness to your decisions. For example, when you’re on YouTube, autoplay
goes to another video. 39 You close the app and go for a walk instead, following
your inner voice over automation.
To be human is to choose. It is to exercise the human capacity for intentional action, the
ability we have been given to be the authors of our own lives. As AI becomes more integrated
in our lives, we must actively preserve our decision-making capacities. 40
A. That is how we remain human.
B. It may even dull our sense of self.
C. So, it’s time to reclaim human agency.
D. The aim of this question is to stay open to algorithm.
E. Psychologists term this common practice “algorithmic dependence” .
F. An algorithm is a set of defined rules you follow to get a specific result.
G. Instead of watching mindlessly, you pause and realize you’re not truly interested.

Learning that you want to build up your strength through exercise, I’d like to
recommend jogging, which is a perfect choice for you.
First of all, as a gentle and beginner-friendly sport, jogging not only effectively boosts blood
circulation, but strengthens muscles and bones. Beyond that, when jogging outdoors, you can be
exposed to natural light and distant scenery, which helps ease eye strain and improve your vision
— exactly what you need right now! To ensure you get the most out of this exercise, wearing
comfortable shoes is necessary, and stop if you feel tired or unwell to protect your joints. More
importantly, always warm up with 10 minutes of stretching before running.
on the move and bring visible changes in your health. Give it a go! Yours,

M: Laura, I went to the library to return books today and was told that 4 of them were past
their due date by 3 days.
W: Were you fined, Justin?
M: Yeah, I got fined $1.50 for each book. I really wish libraries could cancel late fees.
W: I disagree. I think fines are necessary to encourage people to return books on time.
M: But it’s not fair for those who don’t intentionally delay. In fact, some libraries, like
the New York Public Library and the Chicago Public Library, have already cancelled late fees.
W: But fines have improved and expanded library’s services.
M: Don’t you think fines might put people off borrowing books? It’s reported that after
the Chicago Public Library cancelled late fees, the book returns actually have increased by
240%.
W: Actually, library fines are not that high. Instead of cancelling fines, I prefer programs like
LA County Library’s “The Great Read Away” .
M: I’ve heard of that. People under 21 can clear late fees by reading.
W: Exactly. An hour of reading cancels $5 of fees. The fees that can be cancelled include late
fees, replacements for lost or damaged items and library card replacements. However, the
cost of renting a meeting room cannot be cancelled.

W: When Anthony Joshua was in year 9, he set a new record for his school by running 100
meters in just 11.6 seconds. “I liked challenging myself,” he said. Twenty years on, Joshua is
one of the world’s best boxers. His big wins include two world titles and a gold medal for
Team GB (the British Olympic team) at the 2012 Olympics. In 2018, he was awarded an
Order of the British Empire (OBE)—a special honor from the Queen—for his services to
sport. During the Easter holidays, Josie, a 9-year-old reader of The Week Junior, interviewed
the heavyweight boxer. They talked about the school. “I had many friends at school,” he told
Josie. His favorite subject was PE — he was really good at football and athletics. He always
showed great courage and tried his best to protect others. “I can’t stand seeing unfair things or
people being treated badly,” he recalled. Finally, Josie asked what advice would give to readers
of The Week Junior. “Always put your hand up first in class,” he said. “Being smart is really
cool, so keep on reading and try to be the top students in school.”
