Lesson 1
Read carefully the following two excerpts on swimming requirements for university students, and then write your
response in NO LESS THAN 300 WORDS, in which you should:
1. summarize the main message of the two excerpts, and then
2. make comments on whether universities should set requirements other than academic achievements for
students to graduate.
You can support yourself with information from the excerpts.
Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to
follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.
Excerpt 1
Sink or swim tied to bachelor’s degrees - literally
Students aiming to enter one of the top universities in China this year had better be able to swim or be
prepared to learn swimming and pass a swim test since this university will not grant bachelor’s degrees if they
cannot swim.
This September, would-be freshmen at the university will have to take swimming courses if they fail a
swimming test at the beginning of their university life. And they won’t receive their degrees if they cannot swim
before their graduation, in accordance with a message at a university staff meeting days ago, a local newspaper
reported on Monday.
As to why the university is linking swimming ability with degrees, “as a requisite survival skill, swimming is
beneficial for students in the long run, since swimming is helpful in improving students’ endurance and doing
less harm to joints and muscles as a water sport,” said head of the Division of Sports Science and Physical
Education.
Viewing the ability to swim as a must for students to earn their degrees is not new in this top university, as this
ability was listed on its school regulations in the early 20th century.
“As early as 90 years ago, the university required that students cannot graduate from the university or study
overseas if they cannot swim, though the requirement didn’t work later on since the swimming pools at the
campus could not accommodate increasingly more students,” said the head of the Sports Science and Physical
Education Division.
Many alumni of this university had to meet the swimming challenge. The university is not the first university to
require swimming as a compulsory course. Other universities in China have also listed swimming as a compulsory
course for students.
Excerpt 2
University of Chicago nixes nearly 60-year-old swim requirements
For almost 60 years, one of the first things new students had to prove at the University of Chicago was their
ability to stay afloat.
But students in the Class of 2016 wouldn’t have to pass a swim test or take swimming course in their freshman
year. The University of Chicago has joined other universities in nixing the requirement.
A handful of universities still require swimming tests to graduate, a dramatic shift considering that in 1977, 42
percent of colleges had some sort of swimming requirement, the Associated Press reported in 2006. By 1982
that figure had plummeted to 8 percent, and today, there are just a handful.
Three Ivy League colleges - Columbia and Cornell universities and Dartmouth College - still require their
students to pass a swim test before graduation. So do Washington and Lee University in Virginia, and
Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Jeremy Manier, a university spokesman, said the reason for the change was to give students options in how
they choose to exercise. To facilitate that model, the Fit Chicago program - which used to cost students $4 to $5 a
class - is now free.
Many University of Chicago students agree with the change, including Jim Foster, who is the student
government’s vice president for student affairs. In his opinion, the swim test was outdated.
“There’s that fringe sect of universities that say it’s valuable life skill, but then again, so is self-defense,” Forster
said. “So I think it’s a smart decision to really leave it up to the students to decide when, if at all, they would like
Brotherfive

to take the time to learn that skill.”
The “diverse needs” of University of Chicago’s campus is one of the reasons Karen Coleman, Vice President of
Campus Life, cited for nixing the swim tests in a letter to students. “Ending (these requirements) will give us
more opportunities to provide desired athletic and fitness options and give students more flexibility in how and
when they engage in fitness, recreation or athletic activities,” Coleman wrote.
In the first excerpt, the head of the Division of Sports Science and Physical Education is cited for his support for
swimming. The official advocates swimming as a compulsory course not only because it is an important survival
skill and a traditional course at some universities, but also because it is less harmful to joints and muscles than
other sports. By contrast, the second excerpt holds that swimming is only one of the many life skills and students
should be given the freedom to choose whatever sports options they feel attached to. I believe that swimming
can be a valuable option, but it should not be a prerequisite for graduation, and there should also be other
sports courses to meet students’ diverse needs.
It is beneficial for universities and colleges to provide swimming training. This is because swimming, as an
essential self-rescue skill in the event of an aquatic emergency, can effectively reduce cases of fatal drowning,
which is the third leading cause of unintentional injury death. In addition, swimming is an all-round activity that
builds endurance, muscle strength, and cardiovascular fitness.
However, linking swimming ability with degrees is too narrow an approach that ignores the unique needs of
some students. For example, as some are unable to manage aquaphobia, listing swimming as a mandatory
course means that these students cannot get their degrees despite their academic achievements. This is
obviously unfair. Moreover, not every student would consider swimming as the best athletic activity - some may
prefer tennis and others football. Therefore, it is crucial that universities provide a range of sports options and
give students more flexibility in deciding which one to engage in.
In conclusion, I feel that universities should nix the ability to swim as the requisite for graduation. But it is
advised that swimming should remain one of the athletic options available to students.

Excerpt 1
What have the Romans ever done for us? Obviously the roads - the roads go without saying. Then how
about guidance for how to live in the 21st century? That seems less likely, but in fact the last few years have seen
growing interest in the work of Roman Stoic philosophers who offered just that. One of them was Epictetus.
Stoicism holds that the key to a good, happy life is the cultivation of an excellent mental state, which the
Stoics identified with virtue and being rational. Two fundamental principles can both be found in the Handbook,
a short work summarizing the ideas of Epictetus. The first is that some things are within our control and some
are not, and that much of our unhappiness is caused by thinking that we can control things that, in fact, we can’t.
What can we control? Epictetus argues that we actually control very little. We don’t control what happens
to us, we can’t control what the people around us say or do, and we can’t even fully control out own bodies,
which get damaged and sick and ultimately die without regard for our preferences. The only thing that we really
control is how we think about things, the judgments we make about things.
This leads us to the second fundamental principle: it’s not things that upset us, but how we think about
things. Things happen. We then make judgments about what happens. If we judge that something really bad has
happened, then we might get upset, sad, or angry, depending on what it is. If we judge that something bad is
likely to happen then we might get scared or fearful. All these emotions are the product of the judgments we
make. Things in themselves are value neutral, for what might seem terrible to us might be a matter of
indifference to someone else, or even welcomed by others. It’s the judgments we make that introduce value into
the picture, and it’s those value judgments that generate our emotional responses.
Excerpt 2
Happiness comes from correctly managing the world around you. There are many different philosophies you
can subscribe to, and the one below is just another one.
CONQUER YOUR MIND
There are not many things we have complete control over in this world. However, our mind is potentially
one of them. Barring your thoughts, emotions, process, and resulting actions are completely under your control.
Training your mind is an essential skill, like learning to walk. However, not many people are showing us how.
You need to become a master of your own mind. Master musicians and race car drivers have spent
thousands of hours learning how to operate a machine exactly how they wish. There are real physical limitations
to those machines, but within those boundaries you can create incredible feats. And in your mind, you can
change how you think. You can eliminate negativity, see solutions over problems, and connect with people. It
takes work, failure, and repeated conditioning.
CONQUER YOUR BODY
Your body is simply an incredible tool to help you experience the world. It’s another machine in your life
that you have to manage.
You don’t have to be a peak athlete or a fitness trainer. You do have to provide your body with quality food
and exercise. It was originally so simple, because that is what we were made to do. You ate, you moved, and you
were filled with unlimited energy. Unfortunately, our society has made it difficult. We’ve become addicted to
short-term rewards and fast-food drugs that make daily healthy living uncomfortable.
Break free from that, and be human again. Run, jump, fight, and eat real food. This also takes hard work.
But remember, as you manage your mind, it will be much easier to manage your body.
Happiness is a State of Mind
A very important notion of Epictetus, a Stoic philosopher, is that one path to our happiness is to
Brotherfive
differentiate between what we can change and what we can’t. moreover, Epictetus holds that men are disturbed
not by what happens, but how we perceived them, and it is within our power to decide how we value things and
guide them towards our happiness. Meanwhile, on the topic of happiness, some people believe that happiness
comes from correctly managing the world around us. We can change our body and mind into a better state and
thus achieve happiness.
Considering the views of both sides, I’m inclined to agree with the former idea. To begin with, life is
changeable. We have to admit that some things are up to us (chiefly, our judgments and actions), while other
things are not (major historical events, natural phenomena, such as aging, getting ill, etc.). Therefore, for the
things beyond our control, we have to be aware that it is useless to fight an unwinnable battle. We should focus,
instead, on the things that we can control. For instance, when a train is delayed because of an accident, instead
of losing temper, one should concentrate on how to evaluate the event positively. What’s more, there is an old
saying in Chinese culture that happiness lies in contentment. Many people believe that once they arrive at some
specific goals they have set for themselves, they will feel happy. However, more often than not, once you arrive
“there”, you still fell discontented, and move your “there” vision to yet another point in the future.
In conclusion, happiness is not something tangible that one can easily grab but rather a state of mind. In
starts with accepting where you are, knowing where you are going and planning to enjoy every moment along
the way.

Why Tutoring is Important
Not every child learns the same way. Some children learn faster than others. Luckily, for any student who
falls a little behind or has trouble in a particular subject there is tutoring available to help them. Some parents
believe their child does not need tutoring help, but many others may prefer instead to have their child receive
some extra help after class.
In our educational center, we believe that tutoring is very important in the world of academics. Honestly,
there is certainly no shame that your child may need a tutor. No matter what subject your child needs help in, we
can design a tailored program that suits your child’s needs. Whether it is Math, English, Reading, or Study Skills,
there is always a tutor available to help you and your child. Among the most popular requested tutors are math
tutors. Although your child may not be a math whiz, we firmly believe every child has the greatest capacity to
excel in any subject if given the right preparation and tutoring.
Frequently there are times that a child starts to learn something new in school, only to get frustrated that
they are having difficulty in understanding the basic concepts. If they do not learn the fundamental concepts well,
it will only cause the child more difficulty when trying to complete homework assignments and ultimately
trouble scoring well on exams.
We understand your frustrations, and many of our instructors, tutors, and staff are parents just like you.
When your child receives tutoring here in our center, you can rest assured they are receiving the highest quality
of tutoring and instruction from a certified professional. Each student masters the material since they are taught
key concepts in a systematic way.
Our teachers are guided instructors who provide students with specific tasks which lead to discoveries and
deeper understandings.
Excerpt 2
Private Home Tuition Illegal
The Supreme Education Council (SEC) is to launch a crackdown against private tuition from the second
semester of the current academic year.
According to the local daily, the campaign will prohibit private lessons and the promotion of the
“phenomenon” with heavy penalties for people who would violate the rules.
The daily, quoting Mr. Muhammadi, head of the Communication Office at the SEC, said the penalties for
offenders could be imprisonment up to six months and heavy fines or both.
Officers of the SEC will have the judicial authority to deal with any offence in this regard.
Mr. Muhammadi said measures are being taken in order to implement the new law, which was issued last
September, for practicing of educational services in the country. He urged publishing houses and advertisement
platforms to participate in the campaign by refusing to release any material that promotes and encourages
private tuition.
According to the new law, the SEC has the authority to approve educational centers and issue sanctions
against those who practice without permission. “Unauthorized private tutors will be targeted in the first phase of
the drive,” Mr. Muhammadi said.
To curb the “unhealthy” practice, awareness campaigns through different media will be run to inform the
residents about the new law, he said. The council has already started adding lessons and explanations on the SEC
website so that students can study without the help of private tutors.
In addition, special classes will be conducted at the schools for students who need help in some of the
subjects. The official urged pupils to focus on their teachers in classes instead of depending on private tutors, a
phenomenon which, he said, could have a negative impact on children.

Whether students should take extra classes is a problem many parents are concerned about. Numerous
pieces of advice on how to raise a good kid are always attracting the attention of adults, be them scientific or not.
Many parents are invoking the help of extra classes to improve their kid’s study. Others hold an opposing view
that since the quality of private tutors varies, they may have negative impacts on students, and therefore
students should focus on their school education.
In my opinion, it is hard for the kids to be engrossed in their study if they are pushed or even forced to.
Firstly, problems of unbalanced abilities and scores are worrisome in our society. We can always see kids
with high scores yet terrible living abilities or fragile hearts. The complaints that our kids are doing slavish
imitations in study are always heard. Extrapolating from this phenomenon, we can see there is no coincidence.
Rather, they are the ulcers of our education which are closely associated with the overemphasis on scores.
Secondly, it would be brutal to ignore the thoughts of kids who have to lead an after-school life as adults
expected. Students are not the couriers for scores, but the owner of their life. No one can deny the power of
knowledge. We will not cease learning until the day we cease breathing. However, learning does not mean a
merciless elimination of personalities. On the contrary, a true comprehension of knowledge is based on various
life experiences and the passion for life. Instead of pushing kids to take extra classes on holidays, we should
encourage them to attend more outdoor activities rather than to study all the time.
The ruling principle in parenting should be guiding instead of forcing. After all, seeing their Jack become a
dull boy is the last thing parents want.

Consequences of Consumerism
In Human Development Report 1998 Overview by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP),
“World consumption has expanded at an unprecedented pace over the 20th century, with private and public
consumption expenditures reaching $24 trillion in 1998, twice the level of 1975 and six times that of 1950. in
1900 real consumption expenditure was barely $1.5 trillion.”
In September 2001, the BBC aired a documentary called “Shopology,” where psychologists looked into the
psychology of shopping and consumerism in countries like Britain, USA and Japan and asked if it was healthy for
consumers. Of the many points they raised, they observed that:
Consumption now helps to define who we are;
We essentially “buy” a lifestyle;
Consumerism can increase stress for various reasons;
To deal with social and consumerism pressures and their effects, people may on occasion consume
even more to feel better;
Rising consumer debt puts pressure on families.
Two years later, the BBC aired another documentary called “Spend, Spend, Spend.” It looked at the issues of
whether or not the increased wealth and consumerism had led to more content and satisfied individuals. The
documentary observed that research evidence seemed to suggest that increased wealth did not necessarily lead
to more satisfaction in Britain. When interviewed in the program, Professor Andrew Oswald of Warwick
University said that the key reason for this was because as we get healthier there is often a tendency to compare
more with others, which contributes to more anxiety. The “keeping up with the Jonese” syndrome. The
implications of this are profound. As Oswald suggested, it is “hard to make society happier as they get richer and
richer because human beings look constantly over their shoulders. That’s the curse of human beings; making
comparisons.”
Excerpt 2
Consumption as a Path to Cultivation
Consumption, for George Simmel, German sociologist and philosopher, lies at the heart of the process
through which people become cultivated, that is, grow to become participating, reflective members of society.
This is because consumption provides an excellent site for the interaction between subject and object, which
Simmel believed to be the key to cultivation. Subjectivity, the uniquely human capacity for self-reflection, which
allows for the self-conscious construction of action and identity, is not naturally endowed; it only develops
through the creative tension provided by interaction with objects (including people) existing in the world. For
Simmel, consumption provides a vital forum for this subject-object interaction. Through consumption, people
come to understand, instill meaning in, and act upon objects encountered in the world. Consumption provides
people with the opportunity to refine themselves through interaction with objects in the world. In addition, by
confronting, adapting, and integration various world-views directly or indirectly demonstrated in consumption
objects, people not only realize their potential as unique human beings, they also become well-socialized
members of a society.
On the Role of Consumption in Human Society
There is no denying that we’re living in a world consumed with consumption. Some people, such as George
Simmel, German sociologist and philosopher, believe that consumption provides an excellent forum for

interaction between subject and object, thus pushing people to refine themselves through the interaction and to
become well-socialized members of our society. But others point out that the rise of consumerism has had a
detrimental impact on the whole society. It may result in the “keeping up with the Joneses” syndrome and bring
continuous mental agony to people.
It is admitted that to some extent, consumption is indeed a good way to promote personal and economic
development, because consumers must work hard to afford their own expenditure. In the meantime, the
growing demand leads to greater production and more employment, which will stimulate economic growth.
However, as for me, the downside of consumerism is more dominant.
Above all, consumerism destroys the peace of mind. Many people buy things on impulse, without
considering their genuine needs, just to satisfy their shopping desires. A great number of well-off people flaunt
their wealth by indulging in consumption, and quite a few middle-income people would rather be in debt in
order to go with the tide. Secondly, people are engaged in an unceasing struggle to make money to pay for their
high-consumption lifestyle so that hey have little time to spend with their family and friends. This would
ultimately lead to the loss of happiness and love. Thirdly, we can’t ignore the fact that unrestrained consumption
has dreadful effects on the environment. There are a series of interrelated consequences such as the depletion
of natural resources, pollution, etc.
To conclude, high consumption may result in a shift in values from community, spirituality and integrity to
competition, materialism and disconnection. Hence, it is a matter of reflection for everyone to figure out what
constitutes our genuine needs and learn to be moderate in consumption.

Judith Carlisle, headmistress of Oxford High School, said there was no point fretting over GCSEs because no
one will “give a damn” about results - and because they don’t reflect character.
She is running a “Death of Little Miss Perfect” initiative at the private school to combat perfectionism in her
students.
“Perfectionism is only captured in a moment - it’s not achievable longer term,” she said. “It undermines
self-esteem and then performance.”
Miss Carlisle said that students don’t always need to aim for 100 per cent, and if they do need an A grade to
attend their university of choice, it’s not necessary to get the highest A possible.
She said: “It matters, but sometimes it probably won’t matter, it’s important *the girls are+ not going for
things that if they don’t get it, it will destroy them. Exams aren’t who they are - it’s what they did on that day.”
She said: “There’s unhelpful perfectionism as opposed to high standards. It’s not that we’re aiming to
undermine high standards - it will actually help you achieve higher standards.”
Excerpt 2
THE PURSUIT OF PERFECTION
The pursuit of perfection is a strategy for motivating organizations to innovate and reach levels of
improvement and performance not previously seen as possible. Leveraging the pursuit of perfection as a strategy
was developed and refined by quality leaders such as Bob Galvin and Paul O’Neill, and it has led to success in
industries including health care, telecommunications, and manufacturing.
Prior to serving as U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, Paul O’Neill was one of the most successful industrial
leaders of the 20th century. As CEO of Alcoa from 1987 and 1999, he proposed and demanded a radical goal: zero
work-loss incidents. No one would be hurt working at Alcoa. Alcoa moved toward perfection, becoming the
safest industrial company in the world - as well as the most successful aluminum producer in the world.
Paul O’Neill has developed a revolutionary kind of leadership - one that centers around the pursuit of
perfection.
Perfection is what most people aim to achieve. According to on headmistress, too much emphasis on
perfection in the examination may undermine self-esteem and then performance among students. However, the
pursuit of perfection, based on the second material, is a critical strategy that guides enterprises to greater
success. I recognize the significance of pursuing perfection but am firmly convinced that perfection, as the
ultimate state of achievement, should be the stepping stone rather than the stumbling stone for the
development of individuals or enterprises.
For those individuals with high aims, it is understandable that they would expect that everything should be
done with perfection. Such a mentality or “unhelpful perfectionism”, however, would cause annoyance when
something imperfect happens. In the long run, there is little variance between aiming for perfection and fretting
about anything undesirable, with both leading to less self-confidence and worse performance. Therefore, it is
good to aim high, but it is bad to focus on perfection only, since throughout our lives we are bound to get
involved in something that upsets us. And the longer it takes us to recover from such unpleasant things, the less
able we are to perform to our personal best.
For enterprises, improving the process to the point of perfection is always significant because doing so not
only boosts efficiency but also minimizes unnecessary incidents, as is already proved at Alcoa. Nevertheless, the

course to perfection is not always smooth, and things unexpected or unpleasant may happen from time to time
to frustrate our plans. Rather than complaining about the problems incurred by optimization of the procedure,
the leader of a company should regard any trouble as opportunities of improvement. Otherwise, the company
will be stuck in a similar situation as an individual is when fretting about things they did not do well.
Overall, perfectionism is an attitude that motivates us to try our best to achieve our goals. Meanwhile, we
should bear in mind that the pursuit of perfection allows for mistakes and something imperfect, and that an
overemphasis on perfection is more an obstacle than a motivator.

2、Conversation or Interview

Mini-lecture:
Conversation/Interview:
Brotherfive
提示词:Now/OK/Well/Today/序数词......
