Who is the greatest teacher in Chinese history? Many people would think of Confucius, whose birthday was
September 28. Although he lived over 2,000 years ago, people still remember and respect him for his contribution
to the education today.
Confucius lived in the Kingdom of Lu, which lies in Shandong Province. He lived during the Spring and
Autumn Period. He had a hard childhood. His father died when he was only 3. His mother brought him up. As a
child, he had to work to help his mother, but young Confucius didn’t give up studying. He visited many famous
teachers and learned music, history, poetry and sports.
Later, he became a teacher and started the first public school in Chinese history. At that time, only children
from noble families could go to school, but Confucius believed everyone should go to school if they wanted to
learn. He had about 3,000 students in his lifetime.
Today, people still follow Confucius’ lessons. He told us that we all have something worthy to be learned.
“When I am with three people, one of them must be better than me in some areas. I choose their good qualities and
follow them.”
He also taught us that thinking is very important in study. “All study but no thinking makes people
puzzled(困惑的). All thinking but no study makes people lazy.”
Confucius is not only a great teacher, but also a famous thinker with wise thoughts about the world and

It happens every spring. Flowers come out everywhere on the same day. But how do plants “know” when to
flower?
For years, it has been a difficult question for scientists. But a US research group may have finally answered
it—the secret lies in a protein(蛋白质) called FKF1. This helps plants to know when the days become long and
when they get short. Then they can tell the seasons(季节) are changing.
Researchers found the FKF1 protein when they were studying a plant called Arabidopsis. It is sensitive(敏感
的) to sunlight, and can be made active by sunlight.
Plants produce this protein every day in the late afternoon all year. If there is no light at this time, for example,
in winter when the sun goes down early, the protein won’t be active. But when spring comes and the days get
longer, the FKF1 protein can be made active by day light and the plants “know” it is time to flower. “If there is
light in the late afternoon, plants will know that the days are getting longer and that it is the best time for flowers to
come out,” explained Takato Imaizumi, leader of study. But when conditions are poor for growing, such as during
autumn or winter when the weather is cold and days are short, plants won’ t flower.
Although researchers have only studied how the FKF1 protein works in the Arabidopsis, they believe that it is
the same with many other plants, including crops such as rice and wheat.
“If we can control when flowers come out, we might be able to increase crop production,” Imaizumi said.

A.how plants “know” when to flower B.what people can do with plants
C.how seasons are changing D.what kind of plant Arabidopsis is

Each of us has dreams and goals for our future. What makes us study and make progress each day is closely
connected with our personal dream and goal.
But why do you have dreams and goals, you still end up with nothing? What differs successful people from
the dreamers is their persistent (锲而不舍的) action. When you often find some of your lessons very hard, try and
keep trying and you’ll be sure to successfully solve any difficulty you meet with.
This is the famous formula (公式) for success: Dream > Believe > Achieve
Most people have what they want (Dream) and think they can realize their dreams (Believe). And then they do
nothing. They just imagine their dreams can come true. When they get tired waiting and lose a lot, they get bored.
They say angrily how terrible their life is.
I personally believe that if you really want to achieve your dreams and goals in life, you have to add one thing
to your success formula: Dream > Believe> Act > Achieve
For me, act is the most important thing for success and that’s to Take Persistent Action (Act). If you say, “I
can’t do it” and give up, you can never do anything valuable. However, “I’ll try” creates wonders. Let’s remember
that there will always be challenges in our lives. We must face them bravely and solve them. Success is not
something that fells down from the sky. Most successful people made their dreams come true because of their
persistent action.
Please remember persistent action is the bridge that connects our dreams and goals to reality.
13.What should you do when you find your lessons very hard?
A.Ask people for help. B.Try and keep trying.
公众号:初中英语助手C.Get ready to create wonders. D.Prepare for a harder one.
14.Which does the writer add to the famous formula?
A.Act. B.Achieve. C.Connect. D.Create.
15.What does the underlined word “them” refer to?
A.Wonders. B.Lives. C.Success. D.Challenges.
16.What can we learn from the passage?
A.We should do something valuable.
B.We should study hard and make progress.
C.We should achieve dreams with persistent action.
D.We should separate successful people from dreams.

What makes a book a good read? It’s a great question, but there’s no easy answer!
What interests one person may not work for another. There are so many styles and kinds of books. 17

depends on your opinions. Art is highly subjective (主观的).
There are many good books on how to write a book. 18 But they are not step-by-step guides (按部
就班的指南). Since books have no hidden parts, all the words are there on the page, it’s necessary to study the
books you and others think are good reads and ask, “Why did the writer write this work in this way? “
19 They ask them to read drafts (初稿) and provide their opinions. And then the writers rewrite the
drafts according to these readers’ opinions. So a good read is usually the result of many improvements of a bad one.
One difficulty in writing is that it is hard to find people who can give you useful opinions. You have to try to
find people like that. 20 At the same time, be glad to make changes to a draft according to what you
learned.
