Almost every OLQE candidate is in practice: eligibility itself requires at least two years' post-admission experience for common law jurisdictions and not less than five years for non-common-law jurisdictions. Planning must therefore assume interruptions. The first correction is to recognise the real shape of the examination period: it runs from 23 October to 10 November, with as little as three days between papers, leaving no room for systematic revision once it begins. All substantive revision must finish by mid-October.

A five-week template sets goals by week rather than by day, because a day-level plan collapses the first time a client matter intervenes. Weekdays carry a minimum daily quota; weekends hold one uninterrupted block for timed past papers, since stamina over 3½ hours is itself a skill to train. Week one covers the weakest Head and completes the laptop and Lockdown Browser preparation; week two the second weakest and finalises printed materials; week three includes the 9 October stocktake; week four closes systematic revision; week five reviews the index only.

Three principles govern trade-offs. First, aim to pass every Head rather than to excel in one: written Heads are marked out of 100 with a pass at 50 and there is no bell curve, so marks above the line carry no reward while any failure means a resit a year later. Second, for non-common-law candidates the five written Heads form a single unit — the Oral Head V may only be sat once every Written Head specified in the Section 3(2) Certificate has been passed, so failing one defers the oral by a full year.

Third, permit yourself to reduce scope before 9 October, the last day to withdraw with a partial refund of the registration fee. Non-attendance after registering is deemed a failure in that Head, and the exemption guidelines provide that such a failure is taken into account in any later exemption application for that Head. On 9 October, ask of each paper: if it were tomorrow, would I reach 50?
