Hotter summers can leave city trees less green and healthy — but an app in Berlin offers a solution.

Between 2018 and 2019, over 7,000 trees had to be cut down in Germany's capital. Not all were lost to drought damage, but CityLab Berlin said the city's authorities could not keep up with all the trees they had to water.

So in 2020, CityLab started a project called Giess den Kiez, which means "water your neighborhood." Its app maps over 90,000 trees across Berlin, using city data, open-source maps and weather data.

Users can choose a tree to look after and record when they watered it. They can even adopt a tree and show it on their profile. A public Slack channel lets users plan watering together.

There are now 12,000 people signed up. Anna Mehrländer from CityLab told The Guardian, "I was really surprised at just how deeply people care about trees — for many people it's almost like caring for a pet."
