In many of China’s top tourist destinations, a cutting-edge high-tech device - exoskeleton robots - is quietly changing the way people experience hiking. From Mount Tai and Wuyi Mountain to the Enshi Grand Canyon and Shenzhen Safari Park, this has become a new must-try attraction for both domestic and overseas visitors.

This isn’t science fiction. Exoskeleton robots are wearable assistive equipment driven by AI algorithms and powered support systems. An exoskeleton wraps around the wearer’s waist and thighs. It detects his or her movements in real time and automatically adjusts assistance strength based on slope and walking pace. It provides extra power going uphill and added stability going down, reducing fatigue and joint strain.

At Mount Tai, one of China’s most iconic mountains, the “π” exoskeleton robot developed by a Shenzhen-based high-tech company weighs only 1.8 kg. A single charge supports about 14 km of assisted walking. Tourists can rent a device at several rental stations with a price of 80 yuan for three hours. These robots have become incredibly popular - during holidays, demand has even exceeded supply.

“The moment you step onto a stair, you feel a gentle push helping you break free from gravity and go upward. It really makes climbing much easier,” said one visitor. Another added, “It’s surprisingly practical. When I lift my leg, it boosts the motion, and it feels like there’s a spring in my step.”

To many seniors, they can now climb to the top, enjoy the views, and fully participate in hiking experiences which they could once only envy the strong and young who enjoyed.

Exoskeleton robots are not only enhancing comfort but also contributing to the rise of smart tourism in China. We can expect to see an expansion in their use, making outdoor exploration accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

The introduction of robotic exoskeletons has also aroused broader discussions about their potential applications in elderly care (for instance, helping the elderly go upstairs and downstairs), which is of particular interest in China as the country encounters the problem of an aging society whose people aged 60 and above will rise to 30 percent by 2035, when the elderly population will exceed 400 million.

For their welfare the government has issued a national guideline and policies to encourage the development of smart elderly care.

Bi Yalei, secretary-general of the Shenzhen Robotics Association, says that policy-supported market encouragement is necessary to promote the large-scale use of elderly-care robots and make their prices more affordable.
