Text 1
W: Excuse me! I like that 50-dollar suitcase very much. But 35 dollars is all, can afford.
M: 50 dollars was the original price. The suitcase is at a discount. It’s been reduced to 25.
Text 2
W: Hi, Frank! Thanks for your suggestions last time, and I’ve finished the project already.
M: You’re welcome, Jenny. Do you know the examination place?
W: I remember the exam would take place in Room 108.
Text 3
M: You mean it’s still not fixed?
W: Not yet. Too bad. It broke down on the hottest day of the year.
M: I’m supposed to wear a coat and tie in this office, and I’ve been dying.
W: I’ll tell the repairman downstairs again.
Text 4
M: Have you seen a package for me? It was sent more than a week ago, but I haven’t received it yet.
W: I haven’t seen it, but I’ll be sure to ask the others here to look out for it.
Text 5
M: Did you see John’s new haircut? It looks simply great.
W: I don’t know if that crazy style will fit in with his friends.
Text 6
M: I’m so glad it’s Friday. Any plans for the weekend?
W: Alice is having a party on Saturday night. But I’ve had a tough week at work and I think I just want to take it easy this weekend. Maybe watch a video and go to bed early. I don’t really want to go to a party. But on the other hand, if I don’t go, Alice might take it the wrong way. We are in the same office and it could get uncomfortable at work.
Text 7
M: oh, my feet are freezing.
W: Have you been waiting long?
M: It feels like hours, but, suppose I’ve only been here 10 minutes or so.
W: That’s long enough in this weather, but it’s lucky that there’s no wind today.
M: This morning the sun was shining and they were predicting light rain.
W: But now we’ve got at least three inches of snow already.
M: Well, that’s typical. Remember last year when they predicted four inches of snow and we ended up with four feet?
Text 8
W: Hello. can you introduce yourself, please?
M: Sure. My name is Stephen Patterson and I’m from a town called Brentwood in Essex.
W: Essex? Is that in the northeast of England?
M: No, that’s in the southeast, just next to London.
W: Well what kind of place is your town where you grew up?
M: Um, it’s actually a very nice town. people often move into Brentwood from the surrounding towns or from the east end of London. It’s a pleasant place to live. There’s a very large country park.
W: When, think of a small British village, you know,I think of really old houses and nothing has changed. So, do you have modern things? Like, do you have a health club and a movie theater and things like that?
M: Um, I think the cinema in Brentwood is closed down, with the arrival of out-of-town shopping centres. They always have their cinemas with six or eight screens and the cinema in Brentwood only had two screens. However, yeah, it has a very nice health center and as, said, lots of parks.
Text 9
W: Hello, this is Mary Smith. I’ve just heard I’ve won this month’s radio competition.
M: Ah, yes, congratulations! You’re so lucky that you won two return train tickets to Venice.
W: Great. I will go with my mom. When do we have to use them by?
M: Well, you must travel before 30th April. But today is only April fifth, so there’s plenty of time.
W: We can go during my school holidays. Will you send me the tickets?
M: No, you must come to our office and sign for them. The address is 47 Leyton Road. That’s L-E-Y-T-O-N. It’s near the theater.
W: When shall, come? I’ll be at school tomorrow and Friday.
M: Saturday morning then.
W: Great. What time? About 10:30?
M: Let’s say a quarter past 11. Then you can say hello to DJ Richard Brewster. His show finishes at 11.
W: I’ve always wanted to meet him. Thanks very much.
Text 10
W: Good morning, and welcome to the main library of the university of British Columbia. I’m the head librarian and happy to give you a simple introduction to our library. I’ve been working here since 1961, back in the days when the only electrical or electronic things here were the lights. oh, and the phones, of course. Mechanical typewriters then, no cell phones. Computers in a library? No way! Everything was on paper. If you needed to find something, you went to the book list. And if that didn’t help, you asked one of the librarians. And if that didn’t work, you told your professor that you couldn’t write the essay because the library didn’t have the book you needed. At present, we’ve got about 15 computers on each of our four floors. If you know the title or the author, then you can find out where it is.
A word about taking books out. The usual lending period is two weeks, but a few books in great demand can only be taken out for two days. Your great new smart student card is also your library card, and you can also use it to pay at the student cafeteria.
Okay, I guess that’s enough here. Let ’s move up to the second floor.
