Passage B
Philip Hayden, a primary school teacher, found a common weakness in some classrooms. They didn't have windows. And he felt it was affecting his students. “Most of the day, the kids are inside,” Hayden said. “And they don't really get to see any trees, grass, or the blue sky.”
The lack of windows does affect students' mental health, as research shows. It makes their concentration span (持续时间) shorter. But being in and around nature eases anxiety and has benefits to them. Students who have windowview of trees do better academically, emotionally and creatively, and more of them graduate and go to college.That's why Hayden decided to bring nature into classrooms. At first, he planned to print pictures of trees onto the curtains in the classrooms as a way to brighten them up. However, his colleagues reminded him that curtains would take up the wall space for maps and other teaching materials. So he thought, “Why not use the ceilings? Teachers don’t typically use the ceilings.” He prints the pictures and fits them to the ceiling, so when you look up, it feels like you’re sitting under a tree. “And it has all those elements of the science that helps calm you down, helps you focus and communicate,” he said.
Ernest thought there would be many positive effects on his students. “The class attendance is going to go up.I think kids are going to want to come in here more frequently,” he said. A student named Dave told us trees brought him peace. “It is surprising to see because any time you’re inside of a school, you mostly don’t see plants or trees. But now it’s surprising to see that there are trees here,” Dave said. “I would say that it’s pretty great and beautiful.”
“If you still don’t believe in the science behind the art, you can try it yourself by going outside and looking up at the trees,” said Hayden.

It seems strange that while three - quarters of the world's surface is covered with water, getting enough supply of fresh, clean and safe water for drinking and cooking is one of the most serious problems that we face. Most of the water on the earth is salt water in the oceans, only 3% in fresh and only a small part of that is drinkable. It may be trapped deep underground, and unequally exist around the globe. Of the remaining fresh water, much is polluted and dangerous to use.
A large part of UNICEF's (联合国儿童基金会) work is bringing safe water to people and educating them on basic health care. Some diseases spread by polluted water are the most common causes of death and illness in children under five in the developing countries.
Although water gives life, it can also carry some kinds of diseases—a leading cause of blindness among children. Mosquitoes (蚊子) and flies that live near water bring yellow fever, malaria (疟疾), and sleeping problems. Good piped water supplies are needed for the people in such areas.
In some of those countries, women and children spend most of their time going out to collect water. They also walk many miles each day to get just the limited water for cooking and drinking. And they can't carry much water while walking over rough fields. As children have to get water, they may not be able to go to school. UNICEF aims to get about 90,000 water systems set up to benefit 20 million people. A well may mean the difference between life and death.
