《The Old Man and the Sea》Chapter 2—7

老人大声说道：“真希望那个男孩，能在这里。”随后，他靠在了船头那弧形木板的一侧；通过自己肩上的钓线，感受着这条巨大鱼类的力量；这条鱼，正稳步朝着它所选择的方向游去。 "I wish the boy was here," he said aloud and settled himself against the rounded planks of the bow and felt the strength of the great fish through the line he held across his shoulders moving steadily toward whatever he had chosen.
老人，是这么想的：曾经，由于我的狡诈(背叛)；那时的它，才不得不做出这般错误的选择。 When once, through my treachery, it had been necessary to him to make a choice, the old man thought.
它的选择是留在那片深邃幽暗的水域中，远离一切陷阱、圈套、阴谋。而我的选择，则是前往那里，在所有人之外寻找它。His choice had been to stay in the deep dark water far out beyond all snares and traps and treacheries. My choice was to go there to find him beyond all people.
在世界上的所有人之外，寻找它。Beyond all people in the world.
如今，我们已经结合在了一起，从正午时分起便如此。并且，也没有人能帮助我们中的任何一个。Now we are joined together and have been since noon. And no one to help either one of us.
老人心想：或许，我不该成为一名渔夫；但这就是我生来所追求的事业。我必须得记住：要在天亮后，吃掉金枪鱼。Perhaps I should not have been a fisherman, he thought. But that was the thing that I was born for. I must surely remember to eat the tuna after it gets light.
天光破晓前的一段时间里，有东西取走了他身后的一根鱼饵。他听到了鱼竿断裂的声音，以及鱼线开始迅速从船舷外滑出的声响。Some time before daylight something took one of the baits that were behind him. He heard the stick break and the line begin to rush out over the gunwale of the skiff.

他灵巧地用一只手操作着，同时又用脚踩住线圈以稳住它们，同时又逐渐收紧鱼线。He worked skillfully with the one hand and put his foot on the coils to hold them as he drew his knots tight.

现在，老人有六卷备用线。每一条鱼饵上都有两卷线，其中两卷是鱼饵被切断后留下的，另外两卷则是鱼饵被吞食后留下的；所有这些线，都已经连接在了一起。 Now he had six reserve coils of line. There were two from each bait he had severed and the two from the bait the fish had taken and they were all connected.
老人想，等到天色微亮后，我便要继续回到那四十英寻深的鱼饵处，将其一并割除，并连接好备用线圈。After it is light, he thought, I will work back to the forty_fathom bait and cut it away too and link up the reserve coils.
这样一来，我将损失两百英寻深处的优质“加泰罗尼亚”海草，以及钩子和线组。这部分损失，是可以弥补的。I will have lost two hundred fathoms of good Catalan cardel and the hooks and leaders. That can be replaced.
但倘若我能钓到一些鱼，而它却因此被中断，谁来替代这条鱼呢？我并不知道，刚才吞食鱼饵的那条鱼，究竟是什么。But who replaces this fish if I hook some fish and it cuts him off? I don't know what that fish was that took the bait just now.
它有可能是马林鱼、宽鳍鱼、鲨鱼。我从未感受到它的存在。我不得不，迅速地将其摆脱为妙。It could have been a marlin or a broadbill or a shark. I never felt him. I had to get rid of him too fast.
老人(再一次)大声地说道：“我真希望，可以有那个男孩的帮忙。” 但你没有那个男孩，他想。Aloud he said, "I wish I had the boy." But you haven't got the boy, he thought.
你只有你自己，最好现在就回到最后一根线，甭管是在黑暗中还是不在黑暗中，把它割掉、并连接两个备用圈。You have only yourself and you had better work back to the last line now, in the dark or not in the dark, and cut it away and hook up the two reserve coils.
于是，老人就这么做了：在黑暗中操作，十分困难；一旦鱼儿发起猛攻，便会将老人拽倒在地、脸朝下；以致，在其眼角下方划出了一道伤口。So he did it. It was difficult in the dark and once the fish made a surge that pulled him down on his face and made a cut below his eye.
鲜血，顺着老人的脸颊流了一小段距离。不过它很快便凝固，并干涸了；鱼钩，尚未触及他的下巴时，老人便缓缓退回到船头，并靠在木板上休息。The blood ran down his cheek a little way. But it coagulated and dried before it reached his chin and he worked his way back to the bow and rested against the wood.
老人调整好鱼篓的位置，并谨慎地操作着钓线，使其穿过肩部的新部位；接着，他用肩膀稳住钓线，仔细感受着鱼儿的拉力：同时，用手感知着小船在水中的行进轨迹。He adjusted the sack and carefully worked the line so that it came across a new part of his shoulders and , holding it anchored with his shoulders, he carefully felt the pull of the fish and then felt with his hand the progress of the skiff through the water.

老人心想：我真的惊讶，这条鱼为何会做出那样的动作呢？那根绳子，想必是在它背部的大山丘上滑脱了。I wonder what he made that lurch for, he thought. The wire must have slipped on the great hill of his back.
当然了，它的背部不可能像我的这样有感觉。但是，它也不可能永远如此这般地拖着小船，无论它是有多么地强大。Certainly his back cannot feel as badly as mine does. But he cannot pull this skiff forever, no matter how great he is.
如今，所有可能造成麻烦的东西，都已清理干净了；我手头还留有大量备用绳索，这正是一个人所能企及的极限。 Now everything is cleared away that might make trouble and I have a big reserve of line; all that a man can ask.
老人轻声地说道：“鱼，我会和你在一起，直到我死去。”它也会留在我身边，我猜是这样吧，老人心想。他等待着天色渐亮。"Fish," he said softly, aloud, "I'll stay with you until I am dead." He'll stay with me too, I suppose, the old man thought and he waited for it to be light.
此时天还未破晓，四周颇为寒冷；老人便用力抵住木筏，以寻求些许的暖意。It was cold now in the time before daylight and he pushed against the wood to be warm.
老人暗下决心：只要它能坚持下去，我也能做到。曙光初现时，钓线缓缓延伸并沉入水中。I can do it as long as he can, he thought. And in the first light the line extended out and down into the water.
小船，平稳前行；当第一缕阳光升至天边时，它正位于老人的右肩上方。 The boat moved steadily and when the first edge of the sun rose it was on the old man's right shoulder.
老人说：“它正往北游”！心想，水流会把我们带到很远的东方。我希望，它能顺流而下，那表示它正好处于疲惫状态。"He's headed north," the old man said. The current will have set us far to the eastward, he thought. I wish he would turn with the current. That would show that he was tiring.
当太阳继续升高时，老人意识到这条鱼并未感到疲惫。只有一个有利的迹象：线的倾斜度表明，它正游在较浅的水层中。When the sun had risen further the old man realized that the fish was not tiring. There was only one favorable sign. The slant of the line showed he was swimming at a lesser depth.
但是，这并不一定意味着它会跃出水面。不过它或许有这个可能。老人说：“ 上帝，让它跳吧，我有足够的鱼线来应付它！”That did not necessarily mean that he would jump. But he might. "God let him jump, "the old man said. "I have enough line to handle him."
