M: I grew up close to the border with Russia in a small Finnish town. My father was a fisherman whose family went back generations. My mother was an American who met my father on a family holiday and settled in the area. As a young boy, I would join my father on many adventures in the wild woodlands of Finland.
W: It must be colder there than it is here in England.
M: Oh, yes. We would often camp out for days in freezing conditions, but it was always great fun.
My father would cook our meals around a fire and make me coffee. Although the taste wasn’t great, it made me feel really grown up.
W: So, where do the wolves fit in?
M: On one particular morning, my father had gone to collect firewood and a pack of wolves entered the camp. Instead of being scared, I offered them some fish. The wolves were hungry and ate it happily. And that was that … or so I thought. The next day they came back, and the day after that. In the following weeks, every time we went camping, the wolves would find us. I would feed them and eventually we became good friends!
