I was fortunate to be raised in a traditional Karuk family—practicing dipnet fishing, renewal ceremonies, and
cultural fire in harmony with nature’s cycles. When I was growing up, my dad would return from the fishery with a
truck full of salmon (鲑鱼). We’d stay up late processing fish and hanging pieces in the smokehouse. As Káruk
Va’áraaras, we are salmon people, river people, and fix-the-world people. Our relationship with salmon is mutual; as
long as we fish, the salmon will journey upriver to provide for us.
In 2000, the Klamath River turned bright green with harmful algae (海藻) as PacifiCorp sought a 50-year
license renewal for its hydroelectric dams. Built in the 20th century, the dams caused severe environmental harm.
During the 2001 drought, native communities called for federal action to save the river. Initially, the Bureau of
Reclamation limited water deliveries to protect endangered fish, but farmers, fearing crop failures due to water
shortages, successfully pressured the Bush administration to change the decision.
In 2002, summer heat and low river flows led to a massive fish kill—34,000 dead salmon rotting (腐烂) on the
Klamath’s banks. The smell still stays in our collective memory.
As the dams came up for Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) review, we made statements in
hearings. Around a fire, we resolved to fight for dam removal, forming the Klamath Justice Coalition. Over 20 years,
we protested at shareholders’ meetings, and gathered thousands under the slogan: “Undam the Klamath, Bring the
Salmon Home!”
On November 17, 2022, FERC approved the removal of the dams. Watching the Klamath River flow freely for
the first time in over a century is profound. Our Creator’s call to action in 2002 inspired a movement, empowering a
new generation of protectors. As the river heals, so do we. Bring the salmon home indeed.

25.What happened after farmers pressured the Bush administration in 2001?
A.The water restrictions were lifted. B.The endangered fish got more water.
C.The dams were removed immediately. D.The government tightened water control.
26.Why did the Karuk people form the Klamath Justice Coalition?
A.To protest at shareholders’ meetings. B.To gain more decision-making power.
C.To remove the hydroelectric dams. D.To protect the farmers’ water rights.
27.What can we learn from this story?
A.Many hands make light work. B.He who plants a tree plants hope.

Last week, an hour before leaving for the airport, I was still packing. Though it was a short trip, I spent 10
minutes deciding which of the three books to take with me. I knew it was unlikely I’d have time to turn more than
a few pages, but it never occurred to me to not take at least one book. When I stop to think about the value of
reading, it strikes me that it’s a luxury we can’t afford to ignore, however busy we are.
I love François Boucher’s 1756 painting of Madame de Pompadour, which is housed in Munich. Gold curtains
are pulled back as though to reveal Pompadour, lover of Louis XV, lying back on her couch. Her dress is almost like
a character on its own, and it seems to take over the scene, but her figure isn’t any less impressive. Behind her, a
fancy bookcase overflows with volumes, while a side table in the foreground holds an open drawer with a bottle of
ink and a feather pen, suggesting her engagement with writing. At the very center of her graceful figure is an open
book, which she holds elegantly in her hand.
Literacy grew in 18th-century Europe, but books remained expensive, and reading, even for well-to-do women,
was considered a luxury pursuit. Although France tightly controlled reading materials, the painting places reading
on a par with jewels or fine clothes. Pompadour’s thoughtful expression suggests she enjoys reading privately,
regardless of royal restriction.
Reading has long been controlled because books reveal multiple worlds, showing how lives can be caged or free.
They provide access to knowledge, broadening our ability to think and act independently. Once people feel
empowered, almost anything seems possible. I’ve always recognized my access to books as a form of power, helping
me learn new things and approach life thoughtfully.
28.What does the writer want to express when she mentions her packing experience?
A.She always packs at the last minute. B.She values reading remarkably highly.
C.She never travels without a book. D.She often forgets some essential items.
29.What does the underlined phrase “on a par with” most probably mean?
A.As important as. B.As expensive as. C.As rare as. D.As old as.
30.Why has reading long been controlled according to the author?
A.Books are too expensive for people to afford.
B.Reading encourages people to reject authority.
C.Books expose worlds diversely and empower people.
D.Reading helps people observe the world subjectively.
第二次联合诊断检测(英语)第4页 共16页31.Where is the text most probably taken from?
A.An analysis of literacy trends. B.A review of historical paintings.
C.A personal reflection on culture. D.An essay on the worth of reading.

How might you make your mark on the world forever? Write a play greater than Shakespeare’s, or score the
winning World Cup goal? There’s an easier way—just live your everyday life. You’ll likely leave a fascinating legacy
(遗产) that might last a billion years.
As palaeontologists (古生物学家), we have studied the fossil record of the deep past. We’ve now turned our
attention to the everyday objects, to see what kind of future fossils—we call them technofossils—they will make.
We’ve written about this in our new book, Discarded: how technofossils will be our ultimate legacy. Here are some
key messages:
The first things that’ll catch the eye of any far-future palaeontologist are our manufactured objects—buildings,
roads, machines. In recent decades, they have rocketed in amount and now outweigh all living things on Earth.
That’s a lot of raw material for generating future fossils.
Then, most things are designed to be durable and are significantly tougher than the average bone or shell.
Some, like aluminium (铝) cans, are geological novelties. Discarded aluminium cans are now everywhere. Though
resistant, buried cans will slowly break down, leaving can-shaped impressions, lined with tiny minerals. Their
plastic liner may endure, forming future fossil signatures of our era.
Bones, classic fossil relics, will tell a story. The supermarket chicken, now Earth’s most common bird, has a
high chance of fossilization. Buried in plastic-lined landfills, they will dry out, harden and turn to stone. Future
geologists may see their weak, deformed remains as evidence of human-driven genetic changes for mass production.
It’s fun to imagine this and place the human story within Earth’s grand history. But there’s a more troubling
truth. Tomorrow’s fossils are today’s pollution: damaging, often toxic, and costly. If we fail to act, these technofossils
will serve as a lasting reminder of environmental neglect, locking in harm for future generations.
32.What can we learn about technofossils from the text?
A.They are made up of natural materials. B.They are formed from daily pollutants.
C.They have higher fossilization rates. D.They disappear quickly without a trace.
33.Why are the supermarket chickens mentioned in the text?
A.To explain why chickens are the most common birds.
B.To highlight why chickens have genetically changed.
C.To show how plastic waste preserves organic remains.
D.To illustrate how living creatures might become fossils.
34.What is the author’s attitude towards technofossils?
A.Concerned. B.Disturbed. C.Realistic. D.Dismissive.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Technofossils: Ultimate Legacy or Future Pollution?
B.Legacy: Traditional Fossils and Technofossils?
C.How to Keep Fascinating World of Palaeontology
D.How to Make Your Mark on the World Forever

Walking speed is a key indicator of overall health, particularly in older adults. A slower pace is often associated
with higher health risks, while a faster pace suggests better mobility and longevity. Fortunately, walking speed can
be improved through targeted training, which enhances stability, mobility, endurance, and strength. 36 .
How to improve walking speed
37 . Balance exercises, such as heel-to-toe walking or standing on one leg, improve stability and help
prevent falls. Flexibility exercises enhance mobility and reduce injury risk. Strength exercises, like repeatedly
standing up and sitting down in a chair, build muscle power in the legs. Aerobic (有氧的) activities, such as walking
at a steady pace, boost endurance and support heart health.
Aerobic exercise: How much and why
Health guidelines suggest at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise per week for those who are
physically able. “Moderate” means an activity level where you can talk but will notice an increased heart rate and
breathing. This level of exercise benefits everyone. 38 .
Muscle strength: How, and how much
Traditionally, strength training has been recommended 2-3 times per week. Each session should include at
least one set targeting major muscle groups. 39 . Less intense but more frequent strength exercises can also help
maintain muscle mass and strength.
40
Without regular training, muscle mass and strength decline. This not only affects our mobility but also
increases health risks. Daily exercise can make a significant difference. Maintaining physical fitness is essential for
both immediate health benefits and long-term prevention of health problems. If unsure where to start, consulting a
professional is the best option.
A.Use it or lose it
B.Stay active, stay young
C.However, recent studies suggest an alternative approach
D.It especially helps those with long-term health conditions
E.Tailoring exercises based on age and ability can be beneficial
F.Multicomponent training including different exercises appears most effective
G.Effective training is key to maintaining these physical functions and reducing health risks

Dear fellow students,
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
An old farmer, who had lived a good life with his late wife on their farm, was now preparing to leave. He
loaded his modest belongings onto an old caravan (大篷车) outside, accompanied by his faithful dog. As he looked
around the house, he hoped to find a young family in need to take over his place.
Two kids running through the orchard (果园) caught his attention, and soon a young couple introduced
themselves. They had gotten his details from the charity centre in town. The husband had lost his job at the mine
and they had moved across South America to escape poverty before coming to Australia. The wife still had a
cleaning job, and her family used to have a farm in Venezuela when she was a child.
The farmer showed them around, pointing out the windmill, solar panels, and the benefits of the place like low
electricity costs and water from the well. The young wife was grateful, and they shared stories of their struggles.
The young man played South American tunes on his guitar, and the kids danced. The wife brought out homemade
food that the farmer had never tasted before.
The young couple explained they had to move out of their rented house due to the husband’s job loss. The
farmer had told the charity to find good people to love and care for his place, and he hoped to park his caravan at
the back once a year. The young woman considered him their grandpa as their kids had no grandparents.
The farmer showed them an old papyrus (纸莎草纸文稿) written in ancient Latin, a wedding present to his
wife from Hungary, and asked them to keep it on the wall as it protected the house with love.
As the old farmer left in his caravan, with his dog and his wife’s photo, the young family waved him goodbye.
The young wife gave him a parcel of Mexican food for the road.
