Ok, see you then! Text 9 Woman: Hello, Mr. Jan Erick Freedman. You’re a frequent traveler. And we also know that you eat out twice a day. How come you’re so fond of eating out? Man: When I got my first job back in 1982 and started travelling, I had no other choice but eat out. I found that I felt different due to what I was eating, so I tried to find places that served food that made me feel good. The secret was the quality of the food and how well the food was prepared. I made an effort to find good restaurants as well as nice dishes. Woman: How did you manage to make a list of 218 favorite restaurants? Man: I’ve lived in many cities and when I moved back to Sweden from the United States, people asked me where to go and eat when they went to cities I knew. I got a lot of ideas. Then I wrote about restaurants for the Swedish club magazine and someone suggested I gather the information about the restaurants together since I had all the facts about the restaurants I’ve been to. I started to do that. Woman: How do you find restaurants? Man: The best way is to ask the people there. I may talk to the people at the street market or take a walk and look for a place for myself. I never asked a hotel clerk or a taxi driver. I don’t go empty restaurants or places with menus too difficult to understand. Text 10 Man: At the beginning of the tour, we’ll start with the most important place in my town, which is the Plaza Leon. The Plaza Leon, which is more than 100 years old, is a gathering place for young people on Friday and Saturday nights, and for parents and children on Sunday afternoons. Four streets lead to the Plaza, which have white sidewalks and treeline. Hernandes Street, which was named after a famous writer born in the city, contains all of the food stores, fish markets and vegetable stands. Femando Street, which was named after an educator, is where all of the government offices are housed. Via del Mar Street, whose roads are made of stones, is the only street which still has its old surface. Finally we come to Horatio Street on which there are two universities, one of them is the most famous university in my country. That’s why it’s my favorite street of all. We ________ last night, but we went to the concert instead. A. must have studied B. might study C. should have studied D. would study 答案是C. 21. — Why, this is nothing but common vegetable soup! — _________, madam. It’s our soup of the day! A. Let me see B. So it is C. Don’t mention it D. Neither do I 【考点】JI:语言交际. 22. They might just have a place ________ on the writing course — why don’t you give it a try? A. leave B. left C. leaving D. to leave 【考点】A3:动词的现在分词;BB:过去分词. 23. Try not to cough more than you can since it may cause problems to your lungs. A. check B. allow C. stop D. help 【考点】A8:实义动词. 考生需掌握短语more than one can help的意思"尽量不,绝对不",故正确答案是C. 24. If we now to protect the environment, we’ll live to regret it. A. hadn’t acted B. haven’t acted C. don’t act D. won’t act 【考点】E1:一般现在时;HG:条件状语从句. 25. Tony can hardly boil an egg, still cook dinner. A. less B. little C. much D. more 【考点】D1:量词. 26. Police have found appears to be the lost ancient statue. A. which B. where C. how D. what 【考点】79:连接副词. 27. She stares at it carefully. A researcher removes the card and replaces it by another, this time with the spots differently spaced. As the cards change from one to the other, her gaze (凝视) starts to lose its focus --- until a third, with three black spots, is presented. Her gaze returns; she looks at it for twice as long as she did at the previous card. Can she tell that the number two is different from three, just 24 hours after coming into the world? Or do newborns simply prefer more to fewer? The same experiment, but with three spots shown before 第17页 | 共49页two, shows the same return of interest when the number of spots changes. Perhaps it is just the newness? When slightly older babies were shown cards with pictures of objects (a comb, a key, an orange and so on), changing the number of objects had an effect separate from changing the objects themselves. Could it be the pattern that two things make, as opposed to three? No again. Babies paid more attention to squares moving randomly on a screen when their number changed from two to three, or three to two. The effect even crosses between senses. Babies who were repeatedly shown two spots became more excited when they then heard three drumbeats than when they heard just two; likewise (同样地) when the researchers started with drumbeats and moved to spots. 60. C It happened to me recently. I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obama’s Dreams From My Father and how it had changed my views of our President. A friend I was talking to agreed with me that it was, in his words, “a brilliantly(精彩地)written book”. however, he then went on to talk abour Mr. Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his background at all. I sensed that I was talking to a book liar. And it seems that my friend is not the only one. Approximately two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven’t. In the World Book Day’s “Report on Guilty Secrets”, Dreams From My Father is at number 9. The report lists ten books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading, and as I’m not one to lie too often (I’d hate to be caught out ), I’ll admit here and now that I haven’t read the entire top ten. But I am pleased to say that, unlike 42 percent of peoplt, I have read the book at number one, George Orwell’s 1984. I think it’s really brilliant. The World Book Day report also has some other interesting information in it. It says that many people lie about having read jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Fyodor Dostoevsky (I haven’t read him, but haven’t lied about it either)and Herman Melville. Asked why they lied, the most common reason was to “impress” someone they were speaking to. You may wonder how paving(铺砌) a road can lead to less useable fresh water. A major part of the water we use every day is groundwater. Groundwater does not come from lakes or rivers. It comes from underground. The more roads and parking lots we pave the less water can flow into the ground to become groundwater. Human activity is not responsible for all water shortages(短缺). Drier climates are of course more likely to have droughts(干旱) than areas with more rainfall, but in any case, good management can help to make sure there is enough water to meet our basic needs. Thinking about the way we use water every day can make a big difference, too In the United States , a family of four can use 1. 5 tons of water a day! This shows how much we depend on water to live, but there’s a lot we can do to lower the number. You can take steps to save water in your home. But Sophia knew just how important Make – A –Wish could be because this special organization had helped to make a dream come true for one her best friends. We were interested in finding out more, so we went along to meet Sophia listen to what she had to say. Sophia told us that Make – A –Wish is a worldwide organization that started in the United States in 1980. ” It’s a charity(慈善机构)that helps children who have got very serious illnesses. Make – A –Wish help children feel happy even though they are sick, by making their wishes and dreams come true, ” Sophia explained. We asked Sophia how Make – A –Wish had first started. She said it had all begun with a very sick young boy called Chris, who had been dreaming for a long time of becoming a policeman. Sophia said lots of people had wanted to find a way to make Chris’s dream come true ----so, with everybody’s help, Chris, only seven years old at the time, had been a “policeman” for a day. ” when people saw how delighted Chris was when his dream came true, they decided to try and help other sick children too , and that was the beginning of Make – A –Wish, ” explained Sophia. Sophia also told us the Foundation tries to give children and their families a special, happy time.
