Soaring to 29, 035 feet, the famous Mount Everest had long been considered unclimbable due to the freezing
weather, the obvious potential fall from cliffs and the effects of the extreme high altitude, often called “mountain
sickness.” But that was to be changed by Edmund Hillary.
When he was invited to join the British Everest expedition in 1953, Edmund Hillary was a highly capable
climber. The glacier-covered peaks in his hometown in New Zealand proved a perfect training ground for the
Himalaya. It was his fourth Himalayan expedition in just over two years and he was at the peak of fitness.
On May 28, 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, an experienced Sherpa (夏尔巴人) set out and
reached the South Summit by 9 a. m. next day. But after that, the ridge (山脊) slightly fell before rising suddenly in
a rocky spur (尖坡) about 17 meters high just before the true summit. The formation is difficult to climb due to its
extreme pitch because a mistake would be deadly. Scratching at the snow with his ax, Hillary managed to
overcome this enormous obstacle, later to be known as the Hillary Step.
At 11:30 a. m, the two men found themselves standing at the top of the world. “Not until we were about 50
feet of the top was I ever completely convinced that we were actually going to reach the summit.” Hillary later
recounted, “Of course I was very, very pleased to be on the summit, but my first thought was a little bit of surprise.
微信公众号:【高中精品资料君】全网最全电子讲义以及最全网课,有需要的联系微信:xygewx002After all, this is the ambition of all mountaineers.”

establishing the Himalayan Trust (信托基金), through which he provided a number of beneficial services to the
Himalayan peoples. He also a sizeable legacy that mountain climbers have chased ever since. As a young climber

Are you good at interpreting other people’s emotions? Then there’s a good chance that you’re also good at
微信公众号:【高中精品资料君】全网最全电子讲义以及最全网课,有需要的联系微信:xygewx002understanding what animals try to say.
A new Danish-Swiss study published in the open journal Royal Society Open Science indicates that empathetic
(能共情的) people are also good at decoding (解读) animal sounds. Other factors also improve your chance of
communicating with animals — you are more likely to be animal-empathetic if you also work with animals, and the
ability seems to peak in those aged 20-29 years old, according to the scientists.
“Our results show that, based on animal sounds, people are able to tell whether an animal is agitated (焦虑不
安的) or not and whether the animal expresses positive or negative emotions,” says behavioural biologist Elodie
Briefer from the University of Copenhagen’s Faculty of Science. “This is true in connection with a number of
different mammals. We can also see that our ability to interpret the sounds depends on factors such as age,
first-hand knowledge of animals, and not least how empathetic we are towards other people.”
The study was based on answers from 1024 people across 48 countries. They were introduced to sounds from
six mammals: goats, cattle, domesticated horses, Asian wild horses, pigs, and wild boars. The sounds from the six
animals were played to the study’s respondents together with sounds of human nonsense (胡言乱语) produced by
actors. Afterwards, the participants had to guess whether the sounds expressed a high or low level of agitation, and
if the emotions were positive or negative. Following the test, the participants were asked to take an empathy test
that measured their empathy towards human beings. “It is a convincing test which measures empathy towards other
people,” Elodie Briefer explains. “And we saw a clear connection with the ability to interpret animal sounds.”
28.How does the author introduce the topic of the passage?
A.By stating opinions. B.By quoting a saying.
C.By giving an example. D.By asking a question.
29.Who might be best at understanding animal emotions based on the study?
A.A 15-year-old hard-working student. B.A 25-year-old caring animal raiser.
C.A29-year-old experienced hunter. D.A 30-year-old friendly teacher.
30.What does Elodie Briefer think of the test involved?
A.Doubtful. B.Reliable. C.Ineffective. D.Disappointing.

It is reported that endangered polar bears are breeding (繁殖) with grizzly bears (灰熊), creating “pizzly”
bears, which is being driven by climate change.
As the world warms and Arctic sea ice thins, starving polar bears are being forced ever further south, where
they meet grizzlies, whose ranges are expanding northwards. And with that growing contact between the two come
increasing hybrids (杂交种).
With characteristics that could give the hybrids an advantage in warming northern habitats, some scientists
guess that they could be here to stay. “Usually, hybrids aren’t better suited to their environments than their parents,
but these hybrids are able to search for a broader range of food sources,” Larisa DeSantis, an associate professor of
biological sciences at Vanderbilt University, told Live Science.
The rise of “pizzly” bears appears with polar bears’ decline: their numbers are estimated to decrease by more
than 30% in the next 30 years. This sudden fall is linked partly to “pizzly” bears taking up polar bears’ ranges,
where they outcompete them, but also to polar bears’ highly specialized diets.
“Polar bears mainly consumed soft foods even during the Medieval Warm Period, a previous period of rapid
warming,” DeSantis said, referring to fat meals such as seals. “Although all of these starving polar bears are trying
to find alternative food sources, like seabird eggs, it could be a tipping point for their survival.” Actually, the
calories they gain from these sources do not balance out those they burn from searching for them. This could result
in a habitat ready for the hybrids to move in and take over, leading to a loss in biodiversity if polar bears are
replaced.
“We’re having massive impacts with climate change on species,” DeSantis said. “The polar bear is telling us
how bad things are. In some sense, “pizzly” bears could be a sad but necessary compromise given current warming
trends.”

A.Broader habitats. B.Climate preference.
C.More food options. D.Improved breeding ability.
34.What does the underlined phrase “a tipping point” in paragraph 5 refer to?
A.A rare chance. B.A critical stage.
C.A positive factor. D.A constant change.
35.What’s the main idea of the text?
A.Polar bears are changing diets for climate change.
B.Polar bears have already adjusted to climate change.

For most people traveling abroad, their first choice is probably to rush directly to tourist sights. For me. I find
lots of joy in grocery shopping on holiday.
As a vegetarian, finding restaurants that meet my needs is not always easy abroad. 36 The first thing I
do, after dropping my bags off, is to go to a grocery store. That enables me to cook breakfast in the morning
without walking around for hours trying to find “vegan breakfast” near me.
微信公众号:【高中精品资料君】全网最全电子讲义以及最全网课,有需要的联系微信:xygewx002The variety of foods attracts me every time I travel somewhere new. In Malta, I found the most delicious
chocolate-filled cakes, the ones I would struggle to find even in the UK. 37 I was so delighted that I could
enjoy such an unexpected treat. Another surprise was their selection of ice cream available even in the smallest
grocery stores.
38 Looking for smoked tofu and corn pancakes turns into quite a mission whenever I visit
Cluj-Napoca in Romania. There is usually only one variety of smoked tofu, sold in a very small tub (食品盒) and
only in the cafeteria section. 39 That is because they are never available at the smaller ones.
Grocery shopping on holiday sounds unusual. But it means being involved in the day-to-day lives of a
country’s citizens. I can pretend I am a local and put myself in their shoes. I can watch kids begging their parents
for sweets, an international experience that needs no language, or watch couples pick up snacks and drinks for a
party on a Friday night. 40
A.I ended up eating these every day for breakfast.
B.The challenge of finding food is interesting. too.
C.The smoked product is unique and specially packed.
D.So I always make sure to book a place with a kitchen.
E.It’s an act of understanding people as much as of buying food.
F.Corn pancakes always require a trip to the bigger grocery store.
G.By wandering around in a new country, I start to see what they value.

How Your Nose Beats Bacteria
Scientists have discovered an incredible defence system in the human nose. Your nose is a powerful weapon
56 harmful bacteria entering your body. When you breathe in through your nose, you breathe in hundreds of
different 57 (type) of bacteria, some of 58 can make you ill. Cells 59 (line) the inside of your
nose produce a sticky mucus (黏液) that traps these tiny microbugs, and small hairs move the mucus out of your
nose or to the back of your throat.
60 scientists from Massachusetts Eye and Ear, a specialist teaching hospital in the US, have found is
that your nose cells not only produce mucus, but also tiny sacs (囊) called exosomes. These exosomes are filled
with antibacterial substances that kill bacteria directly. They 61 (release) in their billions at the first sign of
62 (infect). They also get a boost from the system that gets mucus 63 (move) out of your nose. The
transport system of tiny hairs sweeps exosomes backwards, alerting the cells at the back of the nose to the incoming
danger and arming them with antibacterial proteins 64 (fight) off the bugs.

Ramu started a business with great enthusiasm but just after a few months his business went under. Time
passed but Ramu didn’t start any new work. His teacher got to know about his situation and called him to his home.
The teacher asked, “Why don’t you start some other work?”
Ramu replied, “I gave my everything to my business and yet it still failed.”
The teacher tried to comfort him, saying “But that’s life. Sometimes we get success and sometimes we don’t.
This doesn’t mean that we stop working.”

The teacher took Ramu to a room and showed him a dead tomato plant. Ramu was confused and said, “It’s
dead. Why are you showing it to me?”
The teacher replied, “When I sowed its seed, I did everything right for it. I watered it, fertilized it, sprayed it
with pesticide (杀虫剂) . I took great care of it but it still died.” He stopped for a while and then said, “Doing work
is the same... No matter how hard you try, you cannot decide what happens in the end. However, you can control
those things in your hands. Just do your best!”
Ramu asked, “But if there is no guarantee of success then what’s the use of doing anything?”
The teacher said, “You’d better not think like that...”
“What’s wrong with that... I have given so much hard work, so much money, so much time; if success is only
a matter of chance, then what is the use of doing so much?” said Ramu and he was about to leave.
Just then the teacher stopped him and said, “Before you leave, I want to show you one more thing.”
