Chinese high school students who want to enter the University of Cambridge may
find that their scores on the National College Entrance Examination, or gaokao, will
help their applications in the future.
The University of Cambridge said in March that it has been using scores on gaokao
as part of its admission criteria(标准) for Chinese students for several years, according
to its official Weibo account. In addition to top scores on gaokao, Chinese applicants
also need to meet English language requirements, participate in an interview and take a
subject-specific written admission assessment(评估).
The gaokao has been criticized by some as a one-shot exam that focuses on rote
learning(死记硬背) rather than creativity. However, more and more people believe that
there's no perfect predictor(评估指标) of academic performance, and gaokao has the
advantage of being what educational experts call a criterion-referenced(标准参照)
exam: It tests whether students are able to master a given body of knowledge, as well as
their ability to work hard and consistently. Recent years have seen more and more
foreign universities begin to accept gaokao scores as part of the application process.
Despite the gaokao's growing acceptance among US universities, “there is a long
way to go before the US education circle fully recognises the gaokao, as there are still
many US universities that don't accept it as part of their application process,” Chu
Zhaohui, a researcher from the National Institute of Education Sciences, told the Global
Times.
21.According to Paragraph 2, we can learn that__________.
A.Chinese applicants need to apply for a Weibo account before attending the tests
B.apart from the scores on gaokao, Chinese students need to take part in other tests
C.scores on gaokao are used as an only admission criterion for Chinese students
D.Chinese applicants have to participate in online interviews
22.It is suggested in the last paragraph that__________.
A.gaokao will be abolished(废除) in the near futureB.most of the US universities have accepted gaokao as their admission criterion
C.it will take a long time for more US universities to accept gaokao
D.many US students want to apply for universities by attending gaokao
23.The passage is most probably taken from__________.
A.a science magazine B.a short-story collection
C.a newspaper D.an advertisement
B
It was just like any other evening. I did the radio show, chatted with listeners and went
through emails. Except for working 35 hours a week, I spent almost my other time with my
kids. Though my husband did well in taking care of them, I still wanted to get more involved
in family activities.
One day, I got an email. The sender said her name is Winifred. She lived in the
Buduburam refugee camp (难民营) in Ghana. She had to take care of three small children,
but she couldn't afford to buy food or water for them. And she learned that I had adopted (收
养) two African children and thought I might be concerned about the problems in Africa and
give her some support.
Actually, I knew nothing about Africa. So I turned to a friend of mine for help. As a
member of a charity (慈善机构) that aimed to help poor people in Africa, he could help me
make sure whether Winifred's words were true or not. Later, I learned that Winifred and her
three children suffered from hungry and had no place to sleep.Although having asked for
help, they didn't receive any reply. After hearing that, I decided to help this family. In
addition, my friend told me many things that happened in Africa, which made me want to help
more people like Winifred.
I had a picture in my head of what I thought I would see. But the reality of the
Buduburam refugee camp was nothing that I could have ever prepared myself for. The local
government turned a blind eye to the refugees living here. And I found Winifred and her
family among more than 42,000 people crowded into 140 acres, with no clean water and
toilets. Most people ate one meal a day.
Later, I returned home to Seattle where I'd never gone hungry and never lacked water,
realizing how lucky I was! And I founded an organization called Point Hope to bring water
and more hope to people at the Buduburam refugee camp.
24.What can we know about the author from Paragraph 1?

25.What did Winifred want the author to do for her?

Coffee is an important part of Italian culture and since arriving here over six months ago,
I have drunk a lot of it!
Of course, coffee is also very popular in the UK but coffee culture in Italy is a completely
different story. In Italy, when you order a coffee in a café or bar,you are served with a tiny,
bitter espresso. This is “normal coffee” for Italians and they are not so interested in the huge
coffees that we drink in the UK. If you want more than one sip (小口) of coffee in Italy, lungo
is a good choice. It is espresso with a little more water added, but still served in a small cup.
In addition, while takeaway coffee is quite popular among Brits, it is not very common at all
in Italy, especially in nontouristy areas. Generally, Italians prefer to drink their tiny coffees
while standing at the bar and, for many, this short break is an important part of their day.
Usually, breakfast in a bar in Italy includes a coffee and a pastry (酥皮糕点).I have
been spoiled for choice with lovely cafés in the Italian town I'm living in. These cafés sell
different kinds of mouthwatering pastries—either plain or filled with cream, chocolate, etc.
— as well as delicious coffee. Cappuccinos are very popular at breakfast time and, for me, a
creamy cappuccino and a pastry with chocolate is the perfect way to start the day.
Finally, I have found that coffee in Italy is so much cheaper than coffee in the UK.
Normally, an espresso(浓缩咖啡)or a macchiato (an espresso with a drop of milk) costs
around a euro and a cappuccino about 1.50! They are small, of course, but this means that
in Italy it is possible to go out for coffee every day without breaking the bank.
28.How is Paragraph 2 mainly developed?
A.By time. B.By space. C.By example. D.By comparison.
29.Which coffee will you get in Italy if you order one without special instructions?
A.Espresso. B.Lungo. C.Cappuccino. D.Macchiato.
30.What can we learn about the coffee culture in Italy?
A.Takeaway coffee is very popular among Italians.
B.Italians are very often seen drinking huge coffees.
C.Italians like to take short breaks from work for coffee.
D.Coffees are often served along with pastries during breakfasts.
31.What does the author think of Italian coffee?
A.She loves its bitter taste. B.It is too expensive for her.
C.It is a good choice for breakfast. D.The cup it is served in is too small.

Tablets (平板电脑) are useful devices, but their big screens always make them a burden
to carry around without a bag. Wouldn't it be great if there were a phone with the power of a
tablet that could be folded up and fit neatly into the hand? Now something like a tabletshaped
but foldable(可折叠的) phone is about to become available. In February, Samsung and
Huawei both introduced foldable phones, the Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X separately, to
the public for the first time. Mobile phone use has entered the “foldable future”, The Verge
noted.
The technology could change our lives in significant ways. These devices, due to their
bendable screens, give us the larger screens we want but still fit easily into the pocket. The
technology could change other devices too. For example, we could make TVs that stick to
walls like posters,or fold up easily to hide away in drawers, which could help increase
available space to the maximum. In a keynote address,Justin Denison, Samsung's senior
vice president, called the foldable screen “the basis for the smartphone of tomorrow”. “It's a
blank canvas(画布) for us to do something beautiful together, ” he said.
So is there nothing to stand in the way of the foldable future? According to tech newswebsite Android Authority, the necessary displays were difficult to produce. In 2012, nine out
of ten foldable screens produced were defective or unusable. Today, that 10 percent rate has
been improved to almost 90 percent. However, at present these foldable devices are
expensive. For example, the price of Huawei Mate X is 17,500 RMB.That's a price that few
people will be able to afford.
But if the foldable device isn't going to change the world overnight, there is no doubt that
it is coming. Patrick Moorhead,an industry expert told The Verge, “Few are debating if
foldable mobile displays are the future of smartphones; the only question is when and by
whom. ”
32.What do we know about foldable devices?
A.They are too big to fit into the pocket.
B.They could bring us much convenience.
C.They have become available in January.
D.They are a burden to carry around without a bag.
33.What can we learn from Denison's words?
A.The foldable screen has great potential.
B.The technology could change other devices too.
C.There must be many problems with the technology.
D.The production of foldable phones will soon decrease.
34.What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Complete. B.Proper. C.Imperfect. D.Normal.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Types of Foldable Phones B.The Coming of Foldable Devices
C.Popular Devices on the Market D.Difficulties in Producing Foldable Phones

One hot Saturday afternoon I was about to go into the music store on White Avenue when
I saw a dog standing in front of the entrance. As I moved toward the door, it suddenly fell to
the ground and lay still, whimpering(呜咽)softly。
"That dog suffers from the heat," said a man behind me. I picked it up. It lay like a baby
in my arms, looking at me with large, trusting eyes. I opened the door and walked inside. "Do
you have some water I can give this dog?" I asked. The shop owner shook his head. "Just leave
it alone. It doesn't belong here. Someone will come back for it.”
I knew I had never seen the dog before, but the way it looked at me gave me a memory of
the past. It needed me. I carried it to my car. As I drove I could feel it looking at me. In the
comfortable silence, I drove it to my home and gave it a name-- Lucy.
When we arrived home, I bathed her and dried her long, curly white fur. Then I placed anold quilt (被子)inside a box in the kitchen. Lucy seemed to know it was for her. Later in the
afternoon, the children came home.
"Wow, a cute ball of fur!" they said. Lucy turned over onto her back, and my children
played with her happily. "We're glad she found us," the children said.
However, three days later, an advertisement appeared: "Lost. One small white dog.
Answers to the name of Augy. Reward."
The address was for a traditional clothing shop. When I arrived at the shop later that
evening I had an uneasy feeling. A young man greeted the dog warmly, and thanked me very
much for taking such good care of her. I knew this man loved his dog. He had paid for an ad
and offered a reward. I was sure I had done the right thing by bringing her back, but I was
sick at heart to think that I would never meet her again.

Dear fellow students,
Currently, labor education has been increasingly attached great importance to, but some students just
bury themselves in books, believing that labor is a waste of time. However, it is necessary for us to do it.
Actually, time spent laboring is rewarding. It can promote our practical skills, strong will, unity and
cooperation. Meanwhile, we will also be given the precious chances to contribute our share and rewarded
with a spiritual fulfillment.
Therefore, actively engage in labor and take our obligation both at home and at school. It will turn out
to be very beneficial and essential.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
One possible version:
I refused the reward, and left the shop alone. The next two weeks, I could not keep Lucy out of my
thoughts. Then one evening when I returned late from work, my son was waiting for me at the door. "That
man phoned," he said. It could have been anyone, yet I surprised even myself when I said, "You mean the
man from the clothing shop?" My son said yes. I phoned back immediately.
The young man's words were totally unexpected. "We have to move to an apartment and can't take the
dog. I think since you took such good care of her, you might like to keep her." Lucy was waiting at the door
when I reached the shop. She stood up to greet me and gave me a knowing look. Then I bent down to pet
her softly. As they say, nothing happens by chance. Some things are just meant to be. I think Lucy knew
that all along.

M:Better still, let's meet in the Red Lion bar to have a little nice talk.
W:Good idea,and I'd love to have a drink there.

W:Did you know James went out of business?
M:Really?When was that?
W:Last month.
M:That's too bad! He had owned that business for 15 years. What happened?
W:I don't know. But life must be pretty tough for his family now.His sons are still so young. One is 13 and
the other is 10.
M:Well, maybe things are not as bad as they seem to be.
W:I hope so.
(Text 7)
W:Guess what?My mother's decided to go back to school.
M:Why?
W:Well, she always loved art,but learned business administration at college, because her parents
thought it was difficult for an artist to find a job.
M:So she wants to study art now?
W:Yeah, oil painting. It's been her dream for a long time.
M:It's nice to return to learn what she loves. But,Kate,I still think old age should be about peace and
relaxation.Hurrying to school every day and having to pass exams sounds a bit too much for her.
W:You know, she retired last year and I'm leaving for the university soon. She needs to find something
interesting to do.
M:Well,maybe,if it's what she wants.

W:Both my parents had a great influence on my choice of work;instead of trying to pick out a job for
me,they helped me learn those things that led me to it.
M:How did your parents do that?
W:My father always told me that an education was one of the greatest advantages I could have, one that
would always stay with me.He used to tell me that readers were leaders, and encouraged me to read all I
could. As a result,I've always kept up with the newspapers, faithfully read magazines and learned to
really enjoy books, all of which have been a valuable help to me in radio and television reporting.
M:What about your mother?W:Well,my mother helped me in a much different way.
(Text 9)
M:We all know that exercise is good for us,but sometimes it seems too hard to leave the sofa.
W:I can see that. You seldom do exercise.
M:Plus, having the doctor tell us to get two and a half hours' exercise a week doesn't really help our
motivation much.
W:Don't be discouraged. Now a new study suggests getting benefits from exercise doesn't have to be that
demanding.Jacob Sattelmair from Harvard University has done a study into how much exercise is needed
to lower the risk of heart attacks.
M:Mmm...,interesting!
W:The study showed that people who put in 300 minutes a week of exercise had a 20% lower risk of
death due to heart disease.Still, the people who exercise 150 minutes a week did pretty well, too,
lowering their death risk by 14%.
M:And what about the people who exercise half as much as that, like what I probably do? Does that
help?
W:Of course,even 15 minutes would help.

the traffic.Biology student,Hannah tells the broadcaster.The youngster's feathers are brown in color.The
darkcolored road surface makes the youngster hard to be noticed. As the number of tourists has grown,so
